The symmetry of Taylor bubbles moving in a vertical pipe is likely to break when the liquid flows downward at a velocity greater than some critical value. The present experiments performed in the inertial regime for Reynolds numbers in the range $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}100<\mathit{Re} < 10\, 000$ show that bifurcation to an eccentric motion occurs, with a noticeable increase of the bubble velocity. The influence of the surface tension parameter (an inverse Eötvös number), $\varSigma $, has been investigated for $0.0045<\varSigma <0.067$. It appears that the motion of an asymmetric bubble is much more sensitive to surface tension than that of a symmetric bubble. For any given $\varSigma $, the symmetry-breaking bifurcation occurs in both laminar and turbulent flow at the same vorticity-to-radius ratio ${(\omega /r)}_0$ on the axis of the carrier fluid. This conclusion also applies to results obtained previously from numerical experiments in plane flows.

The $\mu (I)$-rheology is a nonlinear viscous law, with a strain-rate invariant and pressure-dependent viscosity, that has proved to be effective at modelling dry granular flows in the intermediate range of the inertial number, $I$. This paper shows how to incorporate the rheology into depth-averaged granular avalanche models. To leading order, the rheology generates an effective basal friction, which is equivalent to a rough bed friction law. A depth-averaged viscous-like term can be derived by integrating the in-plane deviatoric stress through the avalanche depth, using pressure and velocity profiles from a steady-uniform solution to the full $\mu (I)$-rheology. The resulting viscosity is proportional to the thickness to the three halves power, with a coefficient of proportionality that is angle dependent. When substituted into the depth-averaged momentum balance this term generates second-order derivatives of the depth-averaged velocity, which are multiplied by a small parameter. Its inclusion therefore represents a singular perturbation to the equations. It is shown that a granular front propagating down a rough inclined plane is completely unaffected by the rheology, but, discontinuities, which naturally develop in inviscid roll-wave solutions, are smoothed out. By comparison with existing experimental data, it is shown that the depth-averaged $\mu (I)$-rheology accurately predicts the growth rate of spatial instabilities to steady-uniform flow, as well as the dependence of the cutoff frequency on the Froude number and inclination angle. This provides strong evidence that, in the steady-uniform flow regime, the predicted decrease in the viscosity with increasing slope is correct. Outside the range of angles where steady-uniform flows develop, the viscosity becomes negative, which implies that the equations are ill-posed. This is a signature of the ill-posedness of the full $\mu (I)$-rheology at both high and low inertial numbers. The depth-averaged $\mu (I)$-rheology therefore cannot be used outside the valid range of angles without additional regularization.

The realizability condition for statistical models of turbulence is augmented to ensure that not only is the Reynolds stress tensor positive semi-definite, but the process of its evolution is physically attainable as well. The mathematical constraints due to this process realizability requirement on the rapid pressure strain correlation are derived. The resulting constraints reveal important limits on the inter-component energy transfer and the consequent flow stability characteristics, as a function of the mean flow. For planar mean flows, the realizability constraints are most stringent for the case of purely sheared flows rather than elliptic flows. The relationship between the constraints and flow stability is explained. Process realizability leads to closure model guidance not only at the two-component (2C) limit of turbulence (as in the classical realizability approach) but throughout the anisotropy space. Consequently, the domain of validity and applicability of current models can be clearly identified for different mean flows. A simple framework for incorporating these process realizability constraints in model formulation is outlined.

The transport of dense particles by a turbulent flow depends on two dimensionless numbers. Depending on the ratio of the shear velocity of the flow to the settling velocity of the particles (or the Rouse number), sediment transport takes place in a thin layer localized at the surface of the sediment bed (bedload) or over the whole water depth (suspended load). Moreover, depending on the sedimentation Reynolds number, the bedload layer is embedded in the viscous sublayer or is larger. We propose here a two-phase flow model able to describe both viscous and turbulent shear flows. Particle migration is described as resulting from normal stresses, but is limited by turbulent mixing and shear-induced diffusion of particles. Using this framework, we theoretically investigate the transition between bedload and suspended load.

A simple way to decrease the drag and oscillating lift forces in the flow around a circular cylinder consists of positioning a splitter plate in the wake, parallel to the flow. In this paper, the effect of the splitter plate on the wake dynamics, more specifically on the wake transition, is described in detail. First, two-dimensional and three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) using the spectral element method were used to observe the behaviour of the wake in the presence of the splitter plate. Then, a linear stability analysis based on the Floquet theory was performed in order to obtain information on how the splitter plate changes the instabilities that lead to wake transition. Simulations were carried out for several gaps between the splitter plate and the cylinder, with the Reynolds number varying in the range between 100 and 350, which corresponds to the wake transition in the flow around a circular cylinder. The results of the simulations showed a discontinuity in the Strouhal number curve that is consistent with the results available in the literature. The stability analysis showed how the splitter plate modifies the transition of the flow to a three-dimensional configuration. The splitter plate has a stabilizing effect on the flow for small gaps, delaying the appearance of three-dimensional structures to higher Reynolds numbers. Mode A and a quasi-periodic (QP) mode are observed for such small gaps. As the gap is increased the discontinuity in the Strouhal number curve also caused a clear change in the characteristics of the neutral stability curve, and the existence of an unstable period-doubling mode was observed. The onset characteristics of the unstable modes are analysed and discussed in depth.

New mechanisms are discovered regarding the effects of inertia in the transient Moffatt–Pukhnachov problem (J. Méc., vol. 187, 1977, pp. 651–673) on the evolution of the free surface of a viscous film coating the exterior of a rotating horizontal cylinder. Assuming two-dimensional evolution of the film thickness (i.e. neglecting variation in the axial direction), a multiple-timescale procedure is used to obtain explicitly parameterized high-order asymptotic approximations of solutions of the spatio-temporal evolution equation. Novel, hitherto-unexplained transitions from stability to instability are observed as inertia is increased. In particular, a critical Reynolds number $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\mathit{Re}_c$ is predicted at which occurs a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation in wave amplitude that is fully explained by the new asymptotic theory. For $\mathit{Re}<\mathit{Re}_c$, free-surface profiles converge algebraically-cum-exponentially to a steady state and, for $\mathit{Re}> \mathit{Re}_c$, stable temporally periodic solutions with leading-order amplitudes proportional to $(\mathit{Re}-\mathit{Re}_c)^{1/2}$ are found, i.e. in the régime in which previous related literature predicts exponentially divergent instability. For $\mathit{Re}=\mathit{Re}_c$, stable solutions are found that decay algebraically to a steady state. A model solution is proposed that not only captures qualitatively the interaction between fundamental and higher-order wave modes but also offers an explanation for the formation of the lobes observed in Moffatt’s original experiments. All asymptotic theory is convincingly corroborated by numerical integrations that are spectrally accurate in space and eighth/ninth-order accurate in time.

Helicity, which is defined as the scalar product of velocity and vorticity, $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}{\mathcal{H}} = {\boldsymbol {u}} \boldsymbol {\cdot }\boldsymbol{\omega}$, is an inviscidly conserved quantity in a barotropic fluid. Mean helicity is zero in flows that are parity invariant. System rotation breaks parity invariance and has therefore the potential of giving rise to non-zero mean helicity. In this paper we study the helicity dynamics in the incompressible Ekman boundary layer. Evolution equations for the mean field helicity and the mean turbulent helicity are derived and it is shown that pressure flux injects helicity at a rate $ 2 \varOmega G^2 $ over the total depth of the Ekman layer, where $ G $ is the geostrophic wind far from the wall and $ {\boldsymbol{\Omega}} = \varOmega {\boldsymbol {e}}_y $ is the rotation vector and $ {\boldsymbol {e}}_y $ is the wall-normal unit vector. Thus right-handed/left-handed helicity will be injected if $ \varOmega $ is positive/negative. We also show that in the uppermost part of the boundary layer there is a net helicity injection with opposite sign as compared with the totally integrated injection. Isotropic relations for the helicity dissipation and the helicity spectrum are derived and it is shown that it is sufficient to measure two transverse velocity components and use Taylor’s hypothesis in the mean flow direction in order to measure the isotropic helicity spectrum. We compare the theoretical predictions with a direct numerical simulation of an Ekman boundary layer and confirm that there is a preference for right-handed helicity in the lower part of the Ekman layer and left-handed helicity in the uppermost part when $ \varOmega > 0 $. In the logarithmic range, the helicity dissipation conforms to isotropic relations. On the other hand, spectra show significant departures from isotropic conditions, suggesting that the Reynolds number considered in the study is not sufficiently large for isotropy to be valid in a wide range of scales. Our analytical and numerical results strongly suggest that there is a turbulent helicity cascade of right-handed helicity in the logarithmic range of the atmospheric boundary layer when $\varOmega >0$, consistent with recent measurements by Koprov, Koprov, Ponomarev & Chkhetiani (Dokl. Phys., vol. 50, 2005, pp. 419–422). The isotropic relations which are derived may facilitate future measurements of the helicity spectrum in the atmospheric boundary layer as well as in controlled wind tunnel experiments.

We study the turbulent Ekman layer at moderately high Reynolds number, $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}1600 < \mathit{Re} = \delta _{E}G/\nu < 3000$, using direct numerical simulations (DNS). Here, $\delta _{E} = \sqrt{2\nu /f}$ is the laminar Ekman layer thickness, $G$ the geostrophic wind, $\nu $ the kinematic viscosity and $f$ is the Coriolis parameter. We present results for both neutrally, moderately and strongly stably stratified conditions. For unstratified cases, large-scale roll-like structures extending from the outer region down to the wall are observed. These structures have a clear dominant frequency and could be related to periodic oscillations or instabilities developing near the low-level jet. We discuss the effect of stratification and $\mathit{Re}$ on one-point and two-point statistics. In the strongly stratified Ekman layer we observe stable co-existing large-scale laminar and turbulent patches appearing in the form of inclined bands, similar to other wall-bounded flows. For weaker stratification, continuously sustained turbulence strongly affected by buoyancy is produced. We discuss the scaling of turbulent length scales, height of the Ekman layer, friction velocity, veering angle at the wall and heat flux. The boundary-layer thickness, the friction velocity and the veering angle depend on $Lf/u_\tau $, where $u_\tau $ is the friction velocity and $L$ the Obukhov length scale, whereas the heat fluxes appear to scale with $L^+=L u_\tau /\nu $.

Two modal decomposition techniques are employed to analyse the stability of wind turbine wakes. A numerical study on a single wind turbine wake is carried out focusing on the instability onset of the trailing tip vortices shed from the turbine blades. The numerical model is based on large-eddy simulations (LES) of the Navier–Stokes equations using the actuator line (ACL) method to simulate the wake behind the Tjæreborg wind turbine. The wake is perturbed by low-amplitude excitation sources located in the neighbourhood of the tip spirals. The amplification of the waves travelling along the spiral triggers instabilities, leading to breakdown of the wake. Based on the grid configurations and the type of excitations, two basic flow cases, symmetric and asymmetric, are identified. In the symmetric setup, we impose a 120° symmetry condition in the dynamics of the flow and in the asymmetric setup we calculate the full 360° wake. Different cases are subsequently analysed using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The results reveal that the main instability mechanism is dispersive and that the modal growth in the symmetric setup arises only for some specific frequencies and spatial structures, e.g. two dominant groups of modes with positive growth (spatial structures) are identified, while breaking the symmetry reveals that almost all the modes have positive growth rate. In both setups, the most unstable modes have a non-dimensional spatial growth rate close to $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\pi /2$ and they are characterized by an out-of-phase displacement of successive helix turns leading to local vortex pairing. The present results indicate that the asymmetric case is crucial to study, as the stability characteristics of the flow change significantly compared to the symmetric configurations. Based on the constant non-dimensional growth rate of disturbances, we derive a new analytical relationship between the length of the wake up to the turbulent breakdown and the operating conditions of a wind turbine.

We study magnetically induced interfacial instability of a thin ferrofluid film subjected to an applied uniform magnetic field and covered by a non-magnetizable passive gas. Governing equations are derived using the long-wave approximation of the coupled static Maxwell and Stokes equations. The contact angle is imposed via a disjoining/conjoining pressure model. Numerical simulations show the patterning resulting from unstable perturbations and dewetting of the ferrofluid film. We find that the subtle competition between the applied field and the van der Waals induced dewetting determines the appearance of satellite droplets. The results suggest a new route for generating self-assembled ferrofluid droplets from a thin film using an external magnetic field. An axisymmetric droplet on a surface is also studied, and we demonstrate the deformation of the droplet into a spiked cone, in agreement with experimental findings.

Turbulent jets and plumes are commonly encountered in industrial and natural environments; they are, for example, key processes during explosive eruptions. They have been the objects of seminal works on turbulent free shear flows. Their dynamics is often described with the concept of the so-called entrainment coefficient, $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\alpha $, which quantifies entrainment of ambient fluid into the turbulent flow. This key parameter is well characterized for axisymmetric jets and plumes, but data are scarcer for turbulent planar plumes and jets. The data tend to show that the Gaussian entrainment coefficient in plane pure plumes is about twice the value for plane pure jets. In order to confirm and to explain this difference, we develop a model of entrainment in turbulent plane jets and plumes taking into account the effect of buoyancy on entrainment, as a function of the shape of the velocity, buoyancy and turbulent shear stress profiles. We perform new experiments to better characterize the rate of entrainment in plane pure plumes and to constrain the values of the model parameters. Comparison between theory and experiments shows that the enhancement of entrainment in plane turbulent pure plumes relative to plane turbulent pure jets is well explained by the contribution of buoyancy.

In Haller & Beron-Vera (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 731, 2013, R4) we developed a variational principle for the detection of coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries. The solutions of this variational principle turn out to be closed null geodesics of the Lorentzian metric induced by a generalized Green–Lagrange strain tensor family. This metric interpretation implies a mathematical analogy between coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries and photon spheres in general relativity. Here, we give an improved discussion of this analogy.

The phenomenology of turbulent relative dispersion is revisited. A heuristic scenario is proposed, in which pairs of tracers undergo a succession of independent ballistic separations during time intervals whose lengths fluctuate. This approach suggests that the logarithm of the distance between tracers self-averages and performs a continuous-time random walk. This leads to specific predictions for the probability distribution of separations, which differ from those obtained using scale-dependent eddy-diffusivity models (e.g. in the framework of Richardson’s approach). These predictions are tested against high-resolution simulations and shed new light on the explosive separation between tracers.

The coherent structures of a turbulent wake generated behind a bluff three-dimensional axisymmetric body are investigated experimentally at a diameter-based Reynolds number of $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}{\sim }2\times 10^5$. Proper orthogonal decomposition of base pressure measurements indicates that the most energetic coherent structures retain the structure of the symmetry-breaking laminar instabilities and are manifested as unsteady vortex shedding with azimuthal wavenumber $m={\pm }1$. In a rotating reference frame, the shedding preserves the reflectional symmetry and is linked with a reflectionally symmetric mean pressure distribution on the base. Due to a slow rotation of the symmetry plane of the turbulent wake around the axis of the body, statistical axisymmetry is recovered in the time average. The ratio of the time scales associated with the slow rotation of the symmetry plane and the vortex shedding is of order 100.

The spectral eddy viscosity (SEV) concept is a handy tool for the derivation of large-eddy simulation (LES) turbulence models and for the evaluation of their performance in predicting the spectral energy transfer. We compute this quantity by filtering and truncating fully resolved turbulence data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of neutrally and stably stratified homogeneous turbulence. The results qualitatively confirm the plateau–cusp shape, which is often assumed to be universal, but show a strong dependence on the test filter size. Increasing stable stratification not only breaks the isotropy of the SEV but also modifies its basic shape, which poses a great challenge for implicit and explicit LES methods. We find indications that for stably stratified turbulence it is necessary to use different subgrid-scale (SGS) models for the horizontal and vertical velocity components. Our data disprove models that assume a constant positive effective turbulent Prandtl number.

It has recently been demonstrated that droplets walking on a vibrating fluid bath exhibit several features previously thought to be peculiar to the microscopic realm. The walker, consisting of a droplet plus its guiding wavefield, is a spatially extended object. We here examine the dependence of the walker mass and momentum on its velocity. Doing so indicates that, when the walker’s time scale of acceleration is long relative to the wave decay time, its dynamics may be described in terms of the mechanics of a particle with a speed-dependent mass and a nonlinear drag force that drives it towards a fixed speed. Drawing an analogy with relativistic mechanics, we define a hydrodynamic boost factor for the walkers. This perspective provides a new rationale for the anomalous orbital radii reported in recent studies.
