Transparent conductive oxides and amorphous oxide semiconductors are important materials for many modern technologies. Here, we explore the ternary indium zinc tin oxide (IZTO) using combinatorial synthesis and spatially resolved characterization. The electrical conductivity, work function, absorption onset, mechanical hardness, and elastic modulus of the optically transparent (>85%) amorphous IZTO thin films were found to be in the range of 10–2415 S/cm, 4.6–5.3 eV, 3.20–3.34 eV, 9.0–10.8 GPa, and 111–132 GPa, respectively, depending on the cation composition and the deposition conditions. This study enables control of IZTO performance over a broad range of cation compositions.

This paper presents thermal properties’ characterization of calcium chloride hexahydrate as a phase change material (PCM) combined with boron nitride nanoparticles (BNNPs), leading to efficient thermal management. BNNPs have high-thermal conductivity up to 200 W/m K. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of PCM could be remarkably enhanced by adding BNNPs to improve the heat transfer performance. In this study, 0.5 wt% of BNNPs were dispersed in the molten PCM. It has been found that the BNNPs could enhance the thermal conductivity of PCM by 71.9%, while reduce the latent heat of fusion and specific heat of PCM by 11.1% and 60.9%, respectively.

We present a comparative ab initio study of surface diffusion of Li and Na on planar and curved graphene. The barrier for diffusion is ~0.1 eV lower for Na than for Li, and is changed significantly by curvature. The maximum change is similar for Li for Na, of the order of ±0.1 eV on the convex and concave sides. The difference in barrier for metal atoms adsorbed on the concave and convex sides can reach 0.2 eV. This modulation of the diffusion barrier by curvature is therefore expected to affect significantly the rate capability of graphene-based anodes.

We report on the mechanical and electrical response of VO2 nanowires during the application of uniaxial tensile strain at room temperature. Stress–strain curves exhibit plateaus, which are characteristic of reversible transformations. The mechanical data are also discussed in terms of size effects, which is important for applications where the structural integrity is key to the performance of devices. Electrical measurements during straining show a distinct increase in resistivity at the M1–M2 transition, and a strong piezo-resistive effect for the M2 phase, disclosing new opportunities for future nanostructured devices. To our knowledge, this is the first time that piezoresistivity in the M2 phase has been reported.

The crystallization mechanism and kinetics of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CrGT) films were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The average Avrami exponent (na) analysis indicated that CrGT exhibits a growth-dominant crystallization in the range of heating rate (β) of 10–50°C/min. In comparison, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) showed a nucleation-dominant crystallization. The na of CrGT was about 3, and was majorly independent of β. The na of GST decreased with an increasing β, which asymptotically approached a value of around 3. The kinetic constant of CrGT was evaluated to be almost the same with that of GST, indicating that CrGT undergoes fast crystallization.

Spherical and conical nanoindentation experiments were performed for the same polymer specimens to compare Young's moduli measured from the elastic loading and unloading curves, and bending experiments. Finite-element simulation was employed to ensure pure elastic deformation during spherical nanoindentation. The moduli measured from the elastic loading curves using Hertz's contact law are very close to the bending moduli, because both measurements were conducted under the same elastic deformation. However, the moduli measured from the elastic unloading curves are up to 60% higher than the bending moduli owing to plastic deformation close to the sharp conical indenter tip.

Using kerf-free wafering technologies material losses in semiconductor manufacturing processes can be reduced drastically. By the use of externally applied stress, crystalline materials can be separated along crystal planes with clearly defined thickness. Nevertheless, during this process striations caused by the crack propagation occur. These crack growth features are river and Wallner lines. In this work, we demonstrate a process for spalling that scales favorably for large-area semiconductor substrates with a diameter up to 300 mm. To get rid of the crack growth features, a laser-conditioning process with a high numerical aperture at photon energies below the material bandgap energy, using multi-photon effects is utilized. The process affords a surface roughness Ra after spalling of <1 µm.

Improvement of both solution and vapor-phase synthetic techniques for nanoscale ferroelectrics has fueled progress in fundamental understanding of the polar phase at reduced dimensions, and this physical insight has pushed the boundaries of ferroelectric phase stability and polarization switching to sub-10 nm dimensions. The development and characterization of new ferroelectric nanomaterials has opened new avenues toward future nonvolatile memories, devices for energy storage and conversion, biosensors, and many other applications. This prospective will highlight recent progress on the synthesis, fundamental understanding, and applications of zero- and one-dimensional ferroelectric nanomaterials and propose new directions for future study in all three areas.

Novel fluorine-doped zinc tin oxide (ZTO:F) thin-film transistors (TFTs) have been fabricated using an aqueous solution process. Exploiting hydrolysis and condensation reactions in an aqueous solution process, organic-free ZTO:F thin films were fabricated at a low temperature of 250 °C. The fabricated TFT device shows a field-effect mobility of 2.85 cm2/V s, on-to-off current ratios exceeding 107, and sub-threshold swings of 0.83 V/dec. The ZTO:F TFT also displays high operational stability of ΔVth = 1.73 V despite incorporation of a large amount of fluorine and use of a low-temperature annealing process. This is attributed to effective passivation of oxygen vacancy diffusion by metal fluoride bonds at the ZTO:F channel/gate dielectric interface.

Three-dimensional cultures have exciting potential to mimic aspects of healthy and diseased brain tissue to examine the role of physiological conditions on neural biomarkers, as well as disease onset and progression. Hypoxia is associated with oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and inflammation, key processes potentially involved in Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. We describe the use of an enzymatically-crosslinkable gelatin hydrogel system within a microfluidic device to explore the effects of hypoxia-induced oxidative stress on rat neuroglia, human astrocyte reactivity, and myelin production. This versatile platform offers new possibilities for drug discovery and modeling disease progression.

A method of fabricating oriented single-crystalline SrRuO3 nanowire arrays using a bottom-up approach relying on diffusion-controlled self-organization is demonstrated. DyScO3 substrates exhibiting an ordered striped phase of DyO and ScO2 chemical termination are used as a template for pulsed laser deposition growth of SrRuO3. Here SrRuO3 preferentially nucleates on one type of termination. The resulting nanowires are single crystalline, conducting and isolated from each other, typically 100 nm wide and 5–10 nm high. This preferential growth is studied using a kinetic Monte Carlo model, which provides a guide to optimize growth conditions and tune the dimensions of the nanowires.

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of ~8 nm in diameter were used for the detection of organochlorine endosulfan pesticide (ESP) as colorimetric sensor and the design of GNP-based chemical sensor for its quantitative estimation has also been proposed. The original wine red color of GNPs changes into various shades of blue after the addition of different concentrations of ESP solutions. A GNP-based sensing electrode has been used for designing of ESP detection chemical sensor at ambient temperature. The response and sensitivity of ESP sensor parameters are obtained from their recovery curves of the change in resistance versus time.

Computational acceleration of performance metric-based materials discovery via high-throughput screening and machine learning methods is becoming widespread. Nevertheless, development and optimization of the opto-electronic properties that depend on dilute concentrations of point defects in new materials have not significantly benefited from these advances. Here, the authors present an informatics and simulation suite to computationally accelerate these processes. This will enable faster and more fundamental materials research, and reduce the cost and time associated with the materials development cycle. Analogous to the new avenues enabled by current first-principles-based property databases, this type of framework will open entire new research frontiers as it proliferates.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) are widely investigated because of their intriguing optical and semiconducting properties in various optoelectronic device applications. Because of the one-dimensional p-orbital overlap along the main chain, CPs exhibit strong anisotropy in optoelectronic characteristics. Therefore, macroscopic assembly and alignment of CPs are essential to fully utilize their potential properties in real device applications. Here we review various processing strategies and material design principles for efficient CP alignment that result in highly anisotropic optical and electronic characteristics. Furthermore, we thoroughly review the incorporation of aligned CPs layers in organic light-emitting diodes, organic thin film transistors, and organic photovoltaic devices. The achieved macroscopic CP alignment has increased the optoelectronic properties and greatly improved device performance.

This paper presents new water-soluble bio-polyelectrolyte-based nanoparticles, formed from lanthanide-induced polysaccharide aggregates (LIPAs). These new nano-aggregates are formed by coordinating a photoluminescent lanthanide–ligand complex to a single polyelectrolyte [i.e. polyanionic hyaluronic acid (HA)] or to two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes [i.e. HA and polycationic chitosan (CHI)]. We demonstrate that photoluminescent Eu3+–ligand complexes, which are dispersed homogeneously in aqueous solution by the association with water-soluble HA. The polysaccharide supermolecular assembly can be tuned to obtain nanoparticles of different sizes and surface charges. The preparation of stable and water-soluble lanthanide complexes via Eu3+–LIPAs opens opportunities for use of luminescent lanthanides in aqueous environments, for biosensing and bioimaging applications.

From the 1918 influenza pandemic (H1N1) until the recent 2019 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, no efficient diagnostic tools have been developed for sensitive identification of viral pathogens. Rigorous, early, and accurate detection of viral pathogens is not only linked to preventing transmission but also to timely treatment and monitoring of drug resistance. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the gold standard method for microbiology and virology testing, suffers from both false-negative and false-positive results arising from the detection limit, contamination of samples/templates, exponential DNA amplification, and variation of viral ribonucleic acid sequences within a single individual during the course of the infection. Rapid, sensitive, and label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 can provide a first line of defense against the current pandemic. A promising technique is non-linear coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy, which has the ability to capture rich spatiotemporal structural and functional information at a high acquisition speed in a label-free manner from a biological system. Raman scattering is a process in which the distinctive spectral signatures associated with light-sample interaction provide information on the chemical composition of the sample. In this prospective, we briefly discuss the development and future prospects of CARS for real-time multiplexed label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 pathogens.

Detection of chlorpyrifos (CPF) using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-enhanced photoelectrochemical sensing system is demonstrated in this study. The presence of CPF was detected based on an increase in the short-circuit photocurrent when a sample is injected into the electrolyte at different concentrations. The short-circuit photocurrent signal was enhanced by both localized SPR of the gold nanoparticles and by the effects of grating-coupled propagating SPR. Using the hybrid SPR-enhancement system, CPF detection was achieved at concentrations as low as 7.5 nM. The proposed technique of leveraging a multifunctional photovoltaic effect can be used for a variety of sensing applications.

Porphyrins absorb light to initiate photocatalytic activity. The complex, asymmetric structures of natural porphyrins such as heme, chlorophyll, and their derivatives hold unique interest. A platform for biosynthesis of porphyrins in Escherichia coli is developed with the aim of producing a variety of porphyrins for examining their photocatalytic properties within a porous material. Bioderived protoporphyrin IX is tethered inside the highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 via solvent-assisted ligand incorporation. This MOF catalyzes the photocatalytic oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide with improved performance over an expanded range of the visible spectrum when compared to unmodified NU-1000.

The processes of singlet fission and triplet fusion could allow state-of-the-art photovoltaic devices to surpass the Shockley–Queisser limit by optimizing the utilized solar spectrum by reducing thermal relaxation and inaccessible sub-bandgap photons, respectively. Triplet fusion demands precise control of the spin-triplet state population, and requires a sensitizer to efficiently populate the triplet state of an acceptor molecule. In this perspective, we highlight the established field of sensitized upconversion and further examine alternative triplet sensitization routes, including the possibility of bulk solid-state semiconductors as triplet sensitizers, which provide a new avenue for charge transfer-based triplet sensitization rather than excitonic triplet energy transfer.

Angiogenesis is a critical component during wound healing, and the process is sensitive to mechanical stimuli. Current in vitro culture environments used to investigate three-dimensional microvascular growth often lack dimensional stability and the ability to withstand compression. We investigated the ability of decorin (DCN), a proteoglycan known to modulate collagen fibrillogenesis, incorporated into a collagen hydrogel to increase construct dimensional stability while maintaining vascular growth. DCN did not affect microvascular growth parameters, while increasing the compressive modulus of collagen gels and significantly reducing the contraction of 3% collagen gels after 16 days in culture.
