We demonstrate that fluorescence properties of organic fluors embedded in a porous polystyrene matrix are highly sensitive to the average pore size and pore-size distribution of the matrix. The effect can be understood as two different types of confinement imposed to the fluor molecules by the matrix. First, there is geometrical confinement that restricts the fluor oscillations due to its physical contact with a pore wall. Second, there is an electronic confinement due to a local polarization of the wall material by molecular dipoles. The effects lead to a spectral shift and enhancement of the fluorescence intensity of the material.

With the aim of understanding the excitation energy transfer mechanism in natural photosynthetic membranes, light-harvesting (LH)2 and LH1-reaction center, which are pigment-protein complexes separated from Rhodobacter sphaeroides, were aligned on a planar electrode surface in stripe patterns at 5 µm intervals. Observation of the absorption spectrum and fluorescence microphotographs revealed selective immobilization and conservation of the pigments. Photocurrent signals were obtained when the electrode was illuminated at either 880 or 800 nm. The fabricated structure was confirmed to function as a natural photosynthetic membrane with the highest photocurrent signal being obtained when using a co-immobilized substrate under excitation at 800 nm.

Electrical fields can be used to heat selectively dislocations and grain boundaries to a much higher temperature compared with the bulk. This selective joule heating, if uncontrolled by limiting the current flow, can lead to melting of grain boundaries and sintering of poly- and nanocrystalline materials close to the theoretical density in a much shorter time due to fast diffusivities of the order of 10−4 to 10−5 cm2/s in the liquid. I refer to this sintering mode as selective-melt sintering, which can occur at lower overall temperatures with much lower energy consumption compared with conventional sintering involving solid-state diffusion.

From thin film solar cells to metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) devices in leading edge integrated circuits, the electronic structure at and near the interfaces between component materials determines the most important fundamental operating characteristics of those devices such as turn-on voltage, power dissipation, and off-state current leakage. Fermi level location at buried interfaces, semiconductor (SC) band bending, charge transfer, oxide defects, and work functions of the constituent materials all contribute to device performance. This paper describes how these important parameters can be determined by employing femtosecond photovoltage spectroscopy, an extension of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) using ultrafast lasers. While standard UPS is fundamentally a surface-sensitive spectroscopy, pump/probe techniques add a new dimension to this venerable spectroscopy, permitting the accurate extraction of the underlying band bending in SCs. When combined with the valence band edge location of the SC and oxide, and determination of the system Fermi level, full characterization of the electronic structure of a MOS stack can be obtained providing key insights on device operating properties. This approach can be extended to study key device materials in emerging areas of artificial intelligence and quantum computing. In each case, surprising new details were uncovered that led to performance optimization of these technologically important devices.

In this paper, a single-band local surface plasmon mode resonance metamaterial filter is calculated and simulated. The damping constant of the gold film is optimized in simulations to eliminate the effects of the grain boundary and the surface scattering on the transmission property. The transmission property of the designed metamaterial filter can be enhanced through optimizing structural parameters (the vertical distance or radius of the gold particle). Two narrow transmission bands are achieved due to the electric field enhancement effect. The electric field enhancement factor η = |E|/|E 0| is used to reveal the electric field resonance strength change. Higher transmission peak and larger field enhancement factor can be achieved than the pure gold hole array structure.

Surface patterned NiFe2O4 thin films exhibited large reduction in coercivity as compared with the films without surface patterning. Chemical analysis of the films revealed that there was no diffusion between the film and the substrate. Additional heating was shown to improve saturation magnetization without adverse effect on coercivity. The process of imprinting was eliminated as the possible cause of the phenomena as the flat stamp did not alter the magnetic properties of the film. Finally, it was shown that the orientation of the features with respect to the magnetic field does not have a significant effect on the magnetic response.

Graphene nanopores are utilized in various notable applications such as water desalination, molecular separation, and DNA sequencing. However, the creation of stable nanopores is still challenging due to the self-healing nature of graphene. In this study, using molecular dynamics simulations we explore the drilling of nanopores through graphene by bombardment with Si-nanoparticles. This enables the Si-passivation along the nanopore rim, which is known as an efficient way to stabilize graphene nanopores. The interplay between graphene and projectile causes the anomalous behaviors such as local maxima depending on particle size. The observations are thoroughly analyzed with interaction energy and shape changes.

Micromechanical testing of electroplated gold alloy films has been conducted using theta-like specimens. Specimens were formed by a standard combination of photolithography, electroplating, and deep reactive ion etching. Testing was performed using an instrumented indenter and the results interpreted using a finite-element model with a Ramberg–Osgood constitutive law to extract elastic and plastic material properties. The observed results were highly repeatable and appear to be sensitive to variations in both sample dimensions and material properties. These qualities suggest that the testing methodology may have significant value as a quality control technique in the fabrication of metal microelectromechanical systems.

We present two straightforward and cost-effective methods, based on metal-assisted chemical etching and a direct imprinting technique, to fabricate metal-covered porous amorphous silicon back reflectors for amorphous silicon solar cells. We demonstrate an increase of approximately 30% in both short-circuit current and overall efficiency with respect to a cell with a flat metal back reflector. This is achieved by implementing light trapping via either a roughened porous amorphous silicon layer or an imprinted periodic grating. This work provides a pathway to increase amorphous silicon solar cell efficiency via increased absorption without significantly impacting processing costs.

The influence of the content of trifluoroacetate (TFA), in the precursor solution, on the critical current density (Jc) of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) superconducting films was investigated. We found that a TFA/Ba ratio of 0.68 is optimal to obtain high-performance YBCO films. Using this optimal solution, we then developed an ultraviolet (UV) light soaking technique to prepare YBCO films. This resulted in the constituent elements being uniformly distributed in the films, and this then enabled enhanced Jc. The addition of water vapor during the UV soaking process decreased the content of carbon residue in the films, and further increased the Jc of the resulting YBCO films.

It is important to understand the electrolyte–electrode interactions for fabricating graphene oxide (GO)- and ionic liquid (IL)-based ultracapacitors. Therefore, we explored how the type and size of the cations in various ILs determine the nature of processed materials. In all cases, the ILs intercalate into the graphitic structure but marked differences are observed during exfoliation via thermal reduction. The combination of a long alkyl chain ammonium-based cation and a large-volume anion leads to strong interactions and defect formation, as evidenced by CO2 production during annealing. In contrast, using the same anions but different cations stabilize the GO functional groups below 400 °C.

Diamond stands out in its ability to host hundreds of color centers, the most studied of which may be the nitrogen-vacancy and NE8 centers. The NE8 center, in particular, can generate single photons at an energy of 1.56 eV, but synthesis efforts are low yield and lack precise control of the defect structure and resulting optical properties. Complementing a bottom-up synthesis effort, we develop a rapid-screening computational approach for screening potential color centers in nanodiamond, focusing here on the nickel–nitrogen complexes. Formation and optical absorption energies are characterized with respect to defect stoichiometry and structure.

A longitudinal field component parallel to the wave vector is generally considered in nonlocal optical response. Longitudinal volume plasmons accompanied by inhomogeneous internal field optically break symmetry for isotropic metal nanoparticles. Here, natural circular dichroism in the interband transitions of TiN nanocubes, Au nanospheres, and Cu nanospheres in solution is presented. A field gradient or volume plasmons exert an electric force and consequently Lorentz force on bound valence-band electrons inside the nanoparticles. It is generalized that interband transitions in nanoparticles intrinsically produce a positive rotational strength and optical right-handedness. Electromechanical chiralty is introduced to explain the optical activity of achiral nanoparticles.

Here, we report that a marine sandworm Nereis virens jaw protein, Nvjp1, nucleates hemozoin with similar activity as the native parasite hemozoin protein, HisRPII. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirm the identity of the hemozoin produced from Nvjp1-containing reactions. Finally, we observed that nAl assembled with hemozoin from Nvjp1 reactions has a substantially higher energetic output when compared to analogous thermite from the synthetic standard or HisRPII-nucleated hemozoin. Our results demonstrate that a marine sandworm protein can nucleate malaria pigment and set the stage for engineering recombinant hemozoin production for nanoenergetic applications.

Thermal transport of pillared-graphene structure (PGS) supported on a copper substrate was investigated using equilibrium molecular dynamics. The results show that thermal conductivity along the graphene sheet in Cu-supported PGS ranges between 96.12 and 247.16 W/m K for systems with different dimensions at an interaction strength χ = 1. Thermal conductivity along carbon nanotube was found to range between 22.43 and 30.83 W/m K. The increase of interaction strength between Cu and carbon leads to a general decrease in thermal conductivity of PGS. The simulation results suggest that the thermal conductivity in Cu-supported PGS systems is governed by system geometry and phonon transport.

Investment in brighter sources and larger detectors has resulted in an explosive rise in the data collected at synchrotron facilities. Currently, human experts extract scientific information from these data, but they cannot keep pace with the rate of data collection. Here, we present three on-the-fly approaches—attribute extraction, nearest-neighbor distance, and cluster analysis—to quickly segment x-ray diffraction (XRD) data into groups with similar XRD profiles. An expert can then analyze representative spectra from each group in detail with much reduced time, but without loss of scientific insights. On-the-fly segmentation would, therefore, result in accelerated scientific productivity.
