A structural model for the geometry of Fe(III) octahedra near the surface of finely divided ferrihydrite was elaborated based on the bond-valence theory and by considering the interaction of water molecules in the 2 nearest hydration spheres. In contrast to bulk Fe atoms, which are bonded to bridging oxo (O) and hydroxo (OH) ligands, surface Fe atoms are also octahedrally coordinated to H2O ligands forming the 1st hydration shell ((H2O)I). In the wet state, external water molecules of the 2nd hydration shell ((H2O)II) are singly H-bonded to (H2O)I, while they are doubly coordinated in the dry state. Accordingly, wet ferrihydrite contains twice as many sorbed water molecules as dry ferrihydrite, and the structural difference due to the 2nd hydration shell accounts quantatively for the 15% increase of ferrihydrite weight experimentally measured in moist atmosphere. The interaction of surface Fe atoms with their 2 nearest hydration spheres modifies the geometry of surface Fe octahedra as compared to bulk octahedra, and idealized Fe-OH and Fe-H2O bond lengths in the wet and dry state were evaluated by the bond-valence theory. Our structural model provides a sound crystal-chemical basis to describe many apparent incongruities of Fe X-ray absorption near edge structure (K-XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopic data that have led to differing interpretations of the coordination environment of Fe in ferrihydrite by various investigators.

A large and representative collection of clay-size dioctahedral mica minerals differing in their chemical compositions has been studied by infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the OH stretching vibration region. Decomposition of the IR spectra in the individual OH bands has provided unambiguous identification of the band positions for each defined pair of octahedral cations bonded to OH groups. The presence of pyrophyllite-like local structural environments in samples having a deficiency of K in interlayers has been established. A set of the relationships between the OH frequencies corresponding to pairs of cations having different valency and mass has been found.

The crystal structure of a sample of talc from Harford County, Maryland, has been determined by least squares refinement from X-ray diffraction photographs. A triclinic cell with a = 5·293, b = 9·179, c = 9·496Å, α = 90·57°, β = 98·91°, γ = 90·03, space group C1̄ is adopted. The layers of the structure have almost monoclinic symmetry but the nearly hexagonal rings of oxygen atoms on the surfaces of the layers, formed by the bases of the silica tetrahedra, are not held in register by interlayer ions as they are in micas but are partly displaced so that the stack of layers forms a triclinic crystal. The hexagons of surface oxygens are distorted by a 3·4° twist of the tetrahedra so that the b axis is 0·2 per cent shorter than in a structure with regular hexagons, and the twist brings the oxygen ions a little closer to the octahedral magnesium ions.

A procedure for structural investigations by X-ray diffraction of mixed-layer structures incorporating swelling layers has been developed. For each sample, specimens saturated with different cations (Na, Mg, and Ca), are analyzed both as air-dried and as glycolated. One structural model fitting all the observed patterns then provides the structure of the sample. Samples tested include: Mite-smectite (I-S) minerals from Kazachstan (a rectorite), Dolna Ves in Slovakia, Kinnekulle in Sweden, the North Sea, and Scania in Sweden. The fitting of the patterns of the Kazachstan rectorite demonstrated that the instrumental parameters applied in the modeling were correct. For the I-S minerals from Slovakia and Kinnekulle the observed patterns were fitted with one two-component I-S model. However, the Ca-saturated and air-dried specimen of the Kinnekulle bentonites had two types of swelling interlayers. For the Slovakian I-S with Reichweite = 2, an alternative two-phase I-S plus I–V (V = vermiculite) model fitted the experimental X-ray diffraction patterns equally well. The I-S mineral from Scania is in fact a three-component I-T-S (T = tobelite) and the North Sea sample is a four-component I-S-V-V, one type of the swelling layers having swelling characteristics intermediately between smectite and vermiculite. In addition to layer types and distribution, interlayer compositions, such as the amount of interlayer glycol and water and of fixed and exchangeable cations, were determined.

Two variables must be considered when calculating exchange free energies (ΔG°ex) for 2:1 clays: (1) anionic field strength, as expressed by equivalent anionic radius (ra), and (2) interlayer water content, as expressed by interlayer molality. For smectites that are in a state of high hydration, interlayer molality is determined by the cations undergoing exchange. Thus ΔG°ex for an exchanging cation pair can be calculated solely from measurements of ra. ra is related to layer charge per half unit cell (C) and ab unit cell area (A) by: ra = (-A/8πC)1/2. The layer charge necessary for cation fixation can be predicted by calculating the ra at which cation exchange with an illite structure expresses a AG°ex equal to that of exchange with a smectite structure. The theory can also be applied qualitatively to understand the high selectivity of illite for Cs+, the fixation of K+ rather than Na+ in shales during diagenesis, the stability of illite over muscovite in the weathering environment, and cation segregation in smectite.

Infrared spectra of two minerals; Urkut quartz (Hungary) and a Swedish feldspar, of different origin with different physical characteristics and crystallinity were studied. Samples were taken after appropriate grinding, and infrared spectra, X-ray powder diffraction and water vapor absorption measurements were made along with electronmicrographs. Quantitative conclusions were drawn from changes of particle size and the ratio of bands of the Si—O groups and also the degree of crystallinity and changes of the particle size, respectively.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, in combination with magnetic methods, was used to study the thermally induced transformation of synthetic lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) to maghemite (γ-Fe2O3). Magnetic analyses showed that the thermal conversion began at about 175°C with the formation of superparamagnetic maghemite clusters. The overall structural transformation to ferrimagnetic γ-Fe2O3 occurred at 200°C and was complete around 300°C. At higher temperatures, the maghemite converted into hematite (α-Fe2O3). Observation of the transformation from γ-FeOOH to γ-Fe2O3 using variable-temperature IR spectroscopy indicated that dehydroxilation on a molecular level was initiated between 145°C and 155°C. The lag time between the onset of the breaking of OH bonds and the release of H2O from lepidocrocite around 175°C can be explained by diffusive processes. Overall dehydroxilation and the subsequent breakdown of the lepidocrocite structure was complete below 219°C. The comparison of the magnetic and IR data provides evidence that the dehydroxilation may precede the structural conversion to maghemite.

An attempt has been made to assemble the best thermodynamic information currently available for soil minerals in the Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system at 25°C and 1 atm. Montmorillonite is included by considering its aluminum silicate phase. Diagrams are presented so that the stability of the minerals can be visualized in relation to the ionic environment. Although the Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system is a very simple one compared to soils and sediments, the stability diagrams depict a mineral stability sequence and mineral pair associations that are in good agreement with natural relations.

According to the stability diagram, mineral pairs that can form in intimate association are gibbsite-kaolinite, kaolinite-montmorillonite, and montmorillonite-amorphous silica. Forbidden pairs are amorphous silica-kaolinite, amorphous silica-gibbsite, and montmorillonite-gibbsite. The formation of intimate mixtures of three or more of these minerals is also forbidden. The stability diagrams predict ion activity relationships that are in reasonable agreement with those obtained from soils and sediments.

Amorphous silica probably limits high silica levels, with montmorillonite also forming at high silica levels. Kaolinite forms at intermediate and gibbsite at low silica levels. These minerals in turn probably control the activity of aluminum ions at a level appropriate to the pH. The formation of gibbsite, kaolinite, montmorillonite and amorphous silica appears to be controlled by a combination of kinetics and equilibria. That is, the kinetic dissolution of unstable silicates appears to control the H4SiO4 level. The new mineral(s) most stable at that H4SiO4 level appear to precipitate in response to solution equilibria.

The adsorption of two dinitrophenol herbicides, 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol (DNOC) and 4,6-dinitro-o-sec-butyl phenol (dinoseb), by two reference smectite clays (SWy-2 and SAz-1) was evaluated using a combination of sorption isotherms, Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and molecular dynamic simulations. Clays were subject to saturation with various cations, and charge reduction. The DNOC adsorption decreased with increasing pH indicating that DNOC was primarily adsorbed as the neutral species. The FTIR spectra of DNOC-clay films showed that DNOC molecules are oriented parallel to the clay surface. Interlayer cations have a strong effect on adsorption depending largely on their hydration energies. Weakly hydrated cations, e.g. K+ and Cs+, resulted in greater sorption compared to more strongly hydrated cations such as Na+ or Ca2+. Lower hydration favors direct interactions of exchangeable cations with -NO2 groups of DNOC and manifests optimal interlayer spacings for adsorption. In the presence of sorbed DNOC, an interlayer spacing for K-SWy-2 of between 12 and 12.5 Å was maintained regardless of the presence of water. This d-spacing allowed DNOC molecules to interact simultaneously with the opposing clay layers thus minimizing contact of DNOC with water. The charge density of clays also affected sorption by controlling the size of adsorption domains. Accordingly, DNOC adsorption by low-charge clay (K-SWy-2) was much higher than by high-charge clay (K-SAz-1) and Li-charge reduction greatly enhanced dinoseb adsorption by K-SAz-1. Steric constraints were also evident from the observation that adsorption of DNOC, which contains a methyl substituent, was much greater than dinoseb, which contains a bulkier isobutyl group. Adsorption of DNOC by K-SAz-1 was not affected in the presence of dinoseb, whereas dinoseb adsorption was greatly reduced in the presence of DNOC.

The enhanced spatial and spectral resolution provided by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has led to the discovery of numerous hydrated silicate minerals on Mars, particularly in the ancient, cratered crust comprising the southern highlands. Phases recently identified using visible/near-infrared spectra include: smectite, chlorite, prehnite, high-charge phyllosilicates (illite or muscovite), the zeolite analcime, opaline silica, and serpentine. Some mineral assemblages represent the products of aqueous alteration at elevated temperatures. Geologic occurrences of these mineral assemblages are described using examples from west of the Isidis basin near the Nili Fossae and with reference to differences in implied temperature, fluid composition, and starting materials during alteration. The alteration minerals are not distributed homogeneously. Rather, certain craters host distinctive alteration assemblages: (1) prehnite-chloritesilica, (2) analcime-silica-Fe,Mg-smectite-chlorite, (3) chlorite-illite (muscovite), and (4) serpentine, which furthermore has been found in bedrock units. These assemblages contrast with the prevalence of solely Fe,Mg-smectites in most phyllosilicate-bearing terrains on Mars, and they represent materials altered at depth then exposed by cratering. Of the minerals found to date, prehnite provides the clearest evidence for subsurface, hydrothermal/metamorphic alteration, as it forms only under highly restricted conditions (T = 200–400°C). Multiple mechanisms exist for forming the other individual minerals; however, the most likely formation mechanisms for the characteristic mineralogic assemblages observed are, for (1) and (2), low-grade metamorphism or hydrothermal (<400°C) circulation of fluids in basalt; for (3), transformation of trioctahedral smectites to chlorite and dioctahedral smectites to illite during diagenesis; and for (4), low-grade metamorphism or hydrothermal (<400°C) circulation of fluids in ultramafic rocks. Evidence for high-grade metamorphism at elevated pressures or temperatures >400°C has not been found.

A scanning and high voltage electron microscope study of the fabric of laboratory sedimented moist uncompressed kaolinite and illite floccules reveals an abundance of face-face flake orientation in the porous clay network. Clays were flocculated in the laboratory in both distilled water and slightly saline (1 g/l. NaCl) water using various clay concentrations. Floccules taken from the moist clay mass were prepared for study by freeze-drying and impregnation with polyethylene glycol.

There is little difference in the fabric of kaolinite flocculated in distilled or slightly saline water. The fabric is dominated by a 3-dimensional network of twisted chains of face-face oriented flakes having the appearance of a stair-stepped cardhouse. Illite floccules in distilled water also consist of abundant face-face oriented overlapping flakes. However, in salt water there is a more even mixture of fabrics—edge-to-face flocculation of individual platelets and also stepped clusters of face-to-face oriented flakes, the latter being more abundant.

It is suggested that under the experimental conditions the double layer of each clay particle is compressed resulting in an increase in the importance of van der Waals forces of attraction. As a result flakes approach each other and rotate into a parallel or subparallel position. The resultant dominant fabric is that of a stepped cluster of overlapping flakes.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to determine the local molecular environment of Co(II) surface complexes sorbed on three different kaolinites at ambient temperature and pressure in contact with an aqueous solution. Interatomic distances and types and numbers of backscattering atoms have been derived from analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). These data show that, at the lowest amounts of Co uptake on kaolinite (0.20–0.32 µmol m−2), Co is surrounded by ≈6 O atoms at 2.04–2.08 Å and a small number or Al or Si atoms (N = 0.6–1.5) at two distinct distances, 2.67–2.72 Å and 3.38–3.43 Å. These results indicate that Co bonds to the kaolinite surface as octahedrally coordinated, bidentate inner-sphere mononuclear complexes at low surface coverages, confirming indirect evidence from solution studies that a fraction of sorbed Co forms strongly bound complexes on kaolinite. In addition to inner-sphere complexes identified by EXAFS spectroscopy, solution studies provide evidence for the presence of weakly bound, outer-sphere Co complexes that cannot be detected directly by EXAFS. One orientation for inner-sphere complexes indicated by XAS is bidentate bonding of Co to oxygen atoms at two Al-O-Si edge sites or an Al-O-Si and Al-OH (inner hydroxyl) edge site, i.e., corner-sharing between Co octahedra and Al and Si polyhedra. At slightly higher surface sorption densities (0.51–0.57/ µmol m−2), the presence of a small number of second-neighbor Co atoms (average NCo < 1) at 3.10–3.13 Å indicates the formation of oxy- or hydroxy-bridged, multinuclear surface complexes in addition to mononuclear complexes. At these surface coverages, Co-Co and Co-Al/Si distances derived from EXAFS are consistent with edge-sharing between Co and Al octahedra on either edges or (001) faces of the aluminol sheet in kaolinite. Multinuclear complexes form on kaolinite at low surface sorption densities equivalent to <5% coverage by a monolayer of oxygen-ligated Co octahedra over the N2-BET surface area. These spectroscopic results have several implications for macroscopic modeling of metal ion uptake on kaolinite: 1) Primary binding sites on the kaolinite surface at low uptake are edge, non-bridging Al-OH inner hydroxyl sites and edge Al-O-Si bridging oxygen sites, not Si-OH sites typically assumed in sorption models; 2) specific adsorption of Co is via bidentate, inner-sphere complexation; and 3) at slightly higher uptake but still a small fraction of monolayer coverage, formation of Co multinuclear complexes, primarily edge-sharing with Al-OH octahedra, begins to dominate sorption.

The hydrated form of tubular halloysite [halloysite (10 Å)] was observed by a conventional electron microscope equipped with an environmental cell (E.C.), by which the “natural” form was revealed without dehydration of the interlayer water. This study mainly reports the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis of the halloysite (10 Å) and its morphological changes by dehydration. The SAED pattern showed halloysite (10 Å) has two-layer periodicity in a monoclinic structure with the unit cell parameters of a = 5.14 Å, b = 8.90 Å, c = 20.7 Å, β = 99.7°, in space group Cc, and almost the same structure as the dehydrated form of halloysite [halloysite (7 Å)]. This means that the dehydration of the interlayer water did not greatly change or affect the structure of halloysite (10 Å). Accompanying the dehydration of the interlayer water, there appeared along the halloysite tube axis clear stripes that were about 50–100 Å in width. The diameters of the tubular particles also increased about 10%. From the results of various experiments, such as a focussing series, observation of the surface structure by the replica method, observation of end-views of the tubular particles, and others, these two phenomena were explained as follows: Halloysite crystals have “domains” along the c-axis direction, the thicknesses of the “domains” vary ca. 50–100 Å. They are tightly connected with each other when the halloysite is hydrated, but are separated from each other by the dehydration of the interlayer water, whereupon the stripes come into existence along the tube axis. Taking these considerations into account, a model of dehydration is proposed. Moreover, a new method of calculating the β-angle is proposed in the Appendix.

A layer-by-layer mechanism explains important features of mixed-layer clay minerals formed during the illitization of smectite, including the occurrence of randomly interstratified illite/smectite, the transition to ordered interstratifications, and the development of long-range ordering. A variety of solid-state transformation mechanisms were tested with a stochastic model, which accounts for interactions among clay layers. The model produces most successful results when the reaction of smectite layers with one illite nearest neighbor is favored over smectites with no illite neighbors by a factor of about two, and over those with two illite neighbors by a factor of ten or more. Synthetic X-ray powder diffraction patterns calculated from model results compare well with those of illite/smectite minerals. These results suggest a new kinetic rate law. Solutions to this rate law for reaction within sediments undergoing burial give mineralogical profiles with depth similar to those observed in subsiding sedimentary basins.

Most of the world's sepiolite-palyg orskite precipitates in lacustrine and perimarine environments. Although these minerals can transform from precursor minerals, the most common formation mechanism involves crystallization from solution. In this study, equilibrium activity diagrams are calculated for sepiolite-palygorskite in the seven component system MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-CO2-HCl, employing available thermodynamic data for related minerals, aqueous species and water. Stability fields are illustrated graphically on plots of log $[a_{{\text{Mg}}^{2+}}\text{/}{(a_{{\text{H}}^{+}})}^2]$vs. log $[a_{{\text{H}}_{\text{4}}{\text{SiO}}_{\text{4}}}{}^{\text{o}}]$, using the activities for log $[a_{{\text{Al}}^{3+}}\text{/}{(a_{{\text{H}}^{+}})}^3]$ defined by an arbitrarily chosen value and the approximate saturation limits of pyrophyllite + amorphous silica, kaolinite + amorphous silica, kaolinite + pyrophyllite, pyrophyllite + quartz and gibbsite. The formation of sepiolite-palygorskite from solution is more favored in the presence of amorphous silica than quartz. Lower aqueous aluminum activities favor the non-aluminum phases sepiolite and kerolite relative to the aluminum-containing phases palygorskite and saponite. The stability ranges of worldwide associations of magnesite and dolomite with sepiolite and palygorskite are also illustrated as a function of aluminum activity.

A smectite rich in ferrous iron and low in aluminum occurs abundantly in the Red Sea Geothermal Deposits, and appear to be forming at present.

Chemical analyses and Mössbauer spectra indicate the mineral is intermediate in composition between nontronite and the as yet undescribed trioctahedral ferrous iron end member.

Polytype diversity of hydrotalcite-like minerals is mainly a function of the nature of the interlayer anion. Among the varieties with CO32− anions, only two- and three-layer polylypes having the same structure as manasseite and hydrotalcite have been confirmed. Stichtite and reevesite, which have been previously identified as six-layer polytypes, are in fact three-layer polytypes.

Among SO42− varieties, one-layer and three-layer polytypes have been identified, but the one-layer types are only present in more hydrated minerals with larger interlayer spacings. The three-layer varieties are of three different polytypes, with both P- and O-types of interlayers. Both rhombohedral and hexagonal varieties exist. Interlayer type may change during hydration-dehydration or anion exchange. Thus, in contrast with the CO32−-bearing minerals, a complete description of the polytype of the SO42−-bearing minerals cannot be made by simply indicating the number of the brucite-like layers in the unit cell.

The two-layer unit cell seen in refined crystal structures of some minerals with SO42− interlayers is not due to a doubled periodicity of alternation of brucite-like layers but to periodicity of interlayer anions, or layer cations.

Many studies of the chemical composition of sepiolite and palygorskite have been carried out using analytical electron microscopy (AEM). According to the literature, a compositional gap exists between sepiolites and palygorskites, but the results presented here show that they may all be intermediate compositions between two extremes. The results of >1000 AEM analyses and structural formulae have been obtained for the samples studied (22 samples of sepiolite and 21 samples of palygorskite) and indicate that no compositional gap exists between sepiolite and palygorskite. Sepiolite occupies the most magnesic and trioctahedral extreme and palygorskite the most aluminic-magnesic and dioctahedral extreme. Sepiolite and palygorskite with intermediate compositions exist between the two pure extremes: (1) sepiolite with a small proportion of octahedral substitution; (2) palygorskite with a very wide range of substitution (the pure dioctahedral extreme is unusual); and (3) intermediate forms, Al-sepiolite and Mg-palygorskite with similar or the same chemical composition. The chemical compositions of the intermediate forms can be so similar that a certain degree of polymorphism exists between Al-sepiolite and Mg-palygorskite.

Infrared spectroscopy is used to distinguish between octahedral and tetrahedral substitutions in an interstratified illite-smectite clay. The Hofmann-Klemen (Li) test suggests that the AlMg□ and FeMg□ octahedral vacancies are preferentially occupied by Li after thermal treatment at 250°C. The ammonium (Chourabi-Fripiat) test reveals the beidellitic character by the formation of two OH stretching modes upon deammonation. The illitic layers are not affected since K is not exchangeable.

Chlorite and corrensite are common clay minerals in lacustrine mudrocks from the Devonian Orcadian Basin, Scotland. The relationship of their occurrence to vitrinite reflectance data demonstrate that they are authigenic minerals, formed during burial diagenesis/metamorphism at temperatures of ≥120°C. Whole rock mineralogical and chemical analyses show that chlorite authigenesis occurred by reactions between the detrital dioctahedral clay mineral assemblage and dolomite that was formed under early evaporitic conditions in the lacustrine environment.

XRD and electron microprobe analyses indicate that phases intermediate between corrensite and chlorite are probably mixed-layer chlorite/corrensite with a tendency towards segregation of layer types. Chemically, the conversion of corrensite to chlorite involves an increase in Al for Si substitution in tetrahedral sites, but there is no change in the Fe/Mg ratio of octahedral cations. There is also no relationship of mixed-layer proportions to paleotemperature; only a general paleotemperature interval of approximately 120° to 260°C in which a range of phases between corrensite and chlorite occurs. Chlorite polytypes are exclusively IIb, indicating the formation of this polytype at diagenetic temperatures.

The occurrence of corrensite and Mg-rich chlorite in evaporite and carbonate successions is probably a reliable indicator of diagenetic alteration at temperatures of ≥ 100°C. Burial diagenetic reactions between dioctahedral clay minerals and Mg-rich carbonates may possibly explain many occurrences of corrensite and Mg-rich chlorite in such rocks.
