Limited information is available on microporosity in soils. A study was undertaken to investigate the micropore characteristics of four soil samples, with different particle-size distributions, and four natural silicate clay minerals. Specific surface area and the differential micropore-size distribution were taken into account to characterize the microstructure of the soils and clays. The micropore-size distributions showed a maximum contribution to the total microporosity by pores having an effective pore radius of ∼20 Å, thus indicating that that category of pore contributes more than others to the total microporosity of the system. For both soils and clays a good exponential correlation was found between the maximum contribution to the microporosity and their specific surface area. A linear relationship was also found between the microporosity of the soils and their clay content. It has been concluded that the micropore system formed by 20 Å pores is mainly located in the clay fraction of the soil, and contributes significantly to defining some of the most notable physicochemical properties of soils and clays.

Black shale is a dark-colored mudrock containing organic matter that may have generated hydrocarbons in the subsurface or that may yield hydrocarbons by pyrolysis. Many black shale units are enriched in metals severalfold above expected amounts in ordinary shale. Some black shale units have served as host rocks for syngenetic metal deposits.

Black shales have formed throughout the Earth's history and in all parts of the world. This suggests that geologic processes and not geologic settings are the controlling factors in the accumulation of black shale. Geologic processes are those of deposition by which the raw materials of black shale are accumulated and those of diagenesis in response to increasing depth of burial.

Depositional processes involve a range of relationships among such factors as organic productivity, clastic sedimentation rate, and the intensity of oxidation by which organic matter is destroyed. If enough organic material is present to exhaust the oxygen in the environment, black shale results.

Diagenetic processes involve chemical reactions controlled by the nature of the components and by the pressure and temperature regimens that continuing burial imposes. For a thickness of a few meters beneath the surface, sulfate is reduced and sulfide minerals may be deposited. Fermentation reactions in the next several hundred meters result in biogenic methane, followed successively at greater depths by decarboxylation reactions and thermal maturation that form additional hydrocarbons. Suites of newly formed minerals are characteristic for each of the zones of diagenesis.

Progressive alteration by seawater of an andesite in the Aegean Island of Milos and an ignimbrite in the Aegean Island of Kimolos, Greece, formed bentonites with or without zeolites. Both profiles are dominated by migration of alkalis and uptake of Mg, Fe and H2O, while Al and Ti are immobile. The relative removal of alkalis controls the formation of either smectite or zeolites. The behavior of Ca and Si depends on the chemistry of the parent rock. In the rhyolitic profile, alteration is controlled by gain of Mg, Fe2+ and Ca and loss of Na, K and Si, while in the andesitic profile by gain of Mg and Fe2+ and loss of Na, K and Ca. In both profiles, significant uptake of SO4- was not observed. Moreover Zr, Nb, V and Ni are immobile and have been enriched residually, while Sr, Rb and Y are lost in both profiles. Thorium is immobile in the rhyolitic profile but is leached in the andesitic profile. Also, the rare earth elements (REE) display fractionation in both profiles; the degree of fractionation increases with the degree of alteration to bentonite. Fractionation of the REE in both profiles and mobility of Th in the andesitic profile are related to the existence of monazite (rhyolitic profile) and apatite (andesite profile). The REE and Th appear to partition into phosphates rather than smectite.

The mobility of Y coupled with the immobility of Nb increases the Nb: Y ratio with advancing alteration, rendering discrimination diagrams that use this ratio to determine the nature of the protoliths misleading. Mass balance calculations showed that in the smectite-rich zones the water: rock (WR) ratio might be as high as 13:1 in both profiles, while in the zeolite-bearing zones it is about 5.5:1. Such WR ratios explain the observed extensive mass transfer and suggest that the pore fluid chemistry might overprint the chemical characteristics of the parent rocks controlling smectite and bentonite chemistry.

The total specific surface area (TSSA) and smectitic layer charge (Qs) calculated from the structural formulae and unit-cell dimensions of 12 pure smectite samples were used as a reference in the design and evaluation of TSSA and Qs measurement techniques based on cation exchange capacity (CEC), H2O retention at 47% RH, and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) retention. A thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) technique was used to study the release of H2O from smectite on heating, and to introduce a correction for H2O remaining in the smectite after heating to 110°C, because the sample weight at this temperature has been used routinely as a reference in CEC and EGME sorption measurements. A temperature of 200°C was found to be the optimum reference for such measurements.

A good agreement between Qs from the structural formula and from CEC was obtained when this correction was applied. The TSSA of smectite was measured with similar accuracy (mean error of ±5–7%) by three techniques: (1) using mean H2O coverage; (2) using mean EGME coverage; and (3) using a combination of H2O coverage and CEC. A reduction of the mean error from 5–7% to 4% can be obtained by averaging these measurements, and a further reduction to 3% by introducing corrections for the dependence of H2O and EGME coverage on layer charge. The study demonstrates that Ca2+-smectite samples at 47% RH have H2O contents corresponding to 88–107% of the theoretical mass of a monolayer and offers an explanation of this variation.

Geothermal fluid discharged by steam wells, which have been core drilled to depths as much as 4500 ft at Wairakei, New Zealand, has altered Pliocene to Pleistocene, silicic, mainly glassy volcanics and related aqueous tuffs and breccias. Measured temperatures (max. 265°C) indicate epithermal to mesothermal conditions in buried fault fissures, the locus of both the hydrothermal fluid and most intense alteration.

A supergene kaolinite alteration zone is distinguished from hypogene Ca-montmorillonite and combined micaceous and chloritic zones. The hypogene zones are usually wide and are temperature dependent and localized along fault fissures. Other common hypogene minerals are alkali feldspars, wairakite, epidote, quartz, calcite, laumontite, ptilolite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Prehnite is rare.

The micaceous clay minerals include illite (about 10 Å) and a series of random mixed-layer illite-montmorillonites with d(001) values ranging from 10·28 to 12·45 Å. The amount of interstratified montmorillonite is related to temperature and fault fissures. Apart from rare mixed-layer swelling chlorite, the Fe-rich chloritic clay shows little or no variation in its composition. Both the micaceous clays and the chloritic clay result from alteration of earlier formed Ca-montmorillonite.

The stability of hydrothermal minerals is controlled by the temperature and chemical composition of the geothermal fluid ascending along the fault fissures. K-feldspar but not albite is deposited on fissure walls, but both alkali feldspars replace primary soda-lime plagioclase in the wall rock. The absence of albite on fissure walls is ascribed to low aqueous mNa+/mK+ ratio. Primary quartz is not affected by the altering solution but hydrothermal quartz is deposited on fissure walls and in the wall rock.

Differential dissolution in NaOH solution was investigated as a means of purification of clay. It was discovered that a large quantity of allophane and free alumina and silica were dissolved from clay preparations in 0.5 N NaOH solution by boiling for as little as 2.5 min, provided the ratio of clay weight to solution volume was kept less than 100 mg to 100 ml. Reprecipitation of dissolved silica occurred if a more prolonged digestion or higher sample to solution ratio was employed. Also, prolonged digestion in the NaOH solution (for 80 min) dissolved as much as 50 percent of kaolinite (Merck) and 25 percent of Wyoming montmorillonite, but only a small quantity of these crystalline minerals was dissolved during the 2.5 min digestion period. Subsequent dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate treatment removed the released iron. Marked improvement of x-ray diffraction patterns of the clays resulted. This rapid and selective dissolution of allophane and free oxides greatly improves the quantitative analysis of crystalline minerals by conventional methods.

After dehydroxylation at 500°C, kaolinite and halloysite became amorphous and also dissolved by the same differential dissolution procedure. Heat-stable (aluminous) montmorillonite and chlorite were only slightly dissolved by this treatment. The selective removal of the 1 : 1 layer aluminosilicates greatly improves the quantitative analysis of the remaining crystalline components of clays by conventional methods.

Quantitative analysis of the smectite-to-illite and illite-to-muscovite transformations indicates that 17–28 wt.% SiO2 and 17–23 wt.% SiO2, respectively, are liberated during these reactions, assuming that Al is conserved. Dissolution of quartz silt in shales yields up to 6–9% SiO2 in the range up to 200°C and a further 10–15% SiO2 in the 200–500°C range. For muds altered to shales at 200°C, 14–20 wt.% silica is evolved. From 200 to 500°C, a further 18–28 wt.% silica is evolved. Additional small amounts of silica may be released in the alteration of feldspar to clay and by stylolitization of quartz silt. Thus, in the burial and temperature range of diagenesis into the epizone, major quantities of silica are released from clays and by quartz dissolution in shales. Within this range of alteration, concomitant decline of whole-rock Si/Al (SiO2/Al2O3) in the transformation of smectite to illite to muscovite suggests the liberated silica migrates from the source shale. As a result, the metamorphosed shales are more micaceous and less quartzose than their progenitor muds. In the diagenetic zone and anchizone, the evolved silica is probably a major source of quartz cement in sandstones. In the epizone, evolved silica is commonly present in quartz veins in the parent rocks. Fluid-inclusion temperatures in quartz overgrowths and fracture fillings in some sandstones suggest that some cements may have been derived from downdip basinal shales and pressure solution in sandstones.

The long, continuous deposition of dust in the Chinese loess plateau offers a unique opportunity to study the nature of Fe oxide formation in a wide range of climatic conditions. A technique to obtain quantitative estimates of the concentration of hematite and goethite in loess and paleosol samples is reported. Experiments using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy on sets of laboratory mixed and natural loess and paleosol samples show that it is possible to obtain rapid and quantitative estimates of the absolute concentration of hematite and goethite in the Chinese loess sediments. Typical loess and paleosol samples were deferrated using the CBD procedure to produce a natural matrix material to which hematite and goethite in known weight percentages were added to produce a set of calibration standards. Spectral violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and brightness of standards were calculated from the reflectance data and served as independent variables for a multiple linear regression analysis. The effect of changing matrix from loess to paleosol was overcome by including a variety of different loess and paleosol samples in the regression equations. The resulting calibration equations provide estimates of wt.% hematite and goethite and have correlation coefficients >0.93. The total measured hematite and goethite concentrations exhibited consistent variations with CBD extractable iron. Tests of the equations for buffering changes in matrix composition were run with samples of varying mineralogical composition (calcite, illite, etc.) and demonstrated that the equations are well buffered for changes in matrix composition from loess to paleosol.

Infrared (IR) spectra in the fundamental and near-IR regions were obtained for Na-saturated Wyoming montmorillonite and reduced-charge Na/Li-saturated Wyoming montmorillonites hydrated under water vapor at 50% RH and dehydrated under vacuum. For the Na-montmorillonite, changes in the intensities of the structural OH-bending modes, particularly that of the MgAlOH group, were observed as the clay was dehydrated. This result was interpreted as evidence that exchangeable Na ions lose solvation water and settle into the ditrigonal cavities on the clay surface as it becomes desiccated. For the Na/Li-montmorillonites, the structural OH-bending modes also decreased in IR intensity because of Li+ migration into the octahedral sheet. The fundamental IR spectra of D2O adsorbed by the montmorillonites showed characteristic absorptions at 2685, 2510, 2400, and 1205 cm-1 that decreased in intensity proportionally to the cation-exchange capacity. This result, along with corroborating data from X-ray powder diffractograms and from near-IR diffuse reflectance spectra of H2O adsorbed by the clays, suggest that the exchangeable cations on Na-montmorillonite dissociated from the clay surface as it hydrated and played a significant role in organizing the structure of adsorbed water at low water contents.

Compacted Na-bentonite clay barriers, widely used in the isolation of solid-waste landfills and other contaminated sites, have been proposed for a similar use in the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Molecular diffusion through the pore space in these barriers plays a key role in their performance, thus motivating recent measurements of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor of water tracers in compacted, water-saturated Na-bentonites. In the present study, we introduce a conceptual model in which the pore space of water-saturated bentonite is divided into ‘macropore’ and ‘interlayer nanopore’ compartments. With this model we determine quantitatively the relative contributions of pore-network geometry (expressed as a geometric factor) and of the diffusive behavior of water molecules near montmorillonite basal surfaces (expressed as a constrictivity factor) to the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor. Our model predicts, in agreement with experiment, that the mean principal value of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor follows a single relationship when plotted against the partial montmorillonite dry density (mass of montmorillonite per combined volume of montmorillonite and pore space). Using a single fitted parameter, the mean principal geometric factor, our model successfully describes this relationship for a broad range of bentonite-water systems, from dilute gel to highly-compacted bentonite with 80% of its pore water in interlayer nanopores.

One-g samples of a montmorillonite, a metabentonite, an illite, two kaolinites, and three halloysites were treated with 50 ml of hydrochloric acid (6·45 N, 1: 1), acetic acid (4·5 N, 1: 3), sodium hydroxide (2·8N), sodium chloride solution (pH 6·10; Na = 35‰; Cl = 21·5‰), and natural sea water (pH 7·85; Na = 35·5‰; Cl = 21·5‰) for a 10-day period in stoppered plastic vials. The supernatant solutions were removed from the clay minerals and analyzed for SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, and K2O. All the solutions removed some SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 from the samples, but the quantities were small. Sodium hydroxide attacked the kaolin group minerals more strongly than it did montmorillonite, metabentonite, or illite. Halloysite was more strongly attacked by hydrochloric acid than was any of the other experimental minerals. Hydrochloric acid removed iron oxide coatings from soil clay minerals, but acetic acid did not remove them completely. The samples most strongly attacked by HCl and NaOH were examined by X-ray diffraction. Acid treatment did not destroy the structure of the clays, but the halloysite structure was partially destroyed. Sodium hydroxide attacked the halloysite structure, as shown by chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction. These experiments show that treatment in dilute acids has no harmful effect in the preparation of clays for X-ray diffraction. Acetic acid is preferred to hydrochloric acid for this purpose. Hydrochloric acid cleans clay minerals by removing free iron oxide from the surface; acetic acid is less effective.

This study examines the influence of minerals and amorphous phases associated with kaolin and kaolinitic rocks on kaolinite crystallinity indices (KCI) derived from X-ray diffraction (XRD) data in order to select the best index for systematic studies of commercial kaolins or geological sequences. For this purpose, 8 kaolins of differing structural order were chosen and used to prepare mixtures containing different weight fractions of quartz, feldspar, illite, smectite, chlorite, halloysite and iron hydroxide and silica gels. An additional 17 samples of kaolin were also studied to test the results and evaluate the restrictions. KCIs used included Hinckley (HI), Range and Weiss (QF), Liètard (R2), Stoch (IK), Hughes and Brown (H&B) and Amigó et al. (full width at half maximum, FWHM), and the “expert system” of Plançon and Zacharie.

Based on more than 15,000 KCI determinations, the HI and QF are influenced by quartz, feldspar, iron hydroxide gels, illite, smectite and halloysite. IK can be used in the presence of quartz, feldspar and iron hydroxide and silica gels. Also, R2 is the only KCI that could be measured in the presence of halloysite; FWHM indices should not be used in the presence of chlorite and/or halloysite; and H&B should only be used with pure kaolinite samples. The “expert system” of Plançon and Zacharie is strongly affected by the presence of other mineral phases, particularly with more than 25% of well-ordered kaolinite. Their system is less sensitive to other mineral phases when only disordered kaolinite is present, and it should not be used with kaolinite of medium order-disorder because the well-ordered phase is present in an inappreciable proportion (<10%). KCI is only measurable in kaolinitic rocks if kaolinite is >20 wt% and the precision increases with an increase in the quantity of kaolinite. In all cases, the reliability will depend on the other minerals present. When a KCI can be measured accurately, the others can be obtained by using the empirical relationships reported in this paper.

The application of the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill (FHH) formalism to the water desorption isotherms obtained for the whole range of the activity of water with the pressure membrane device (0.98 < aw < 1) and with the desiccator (0 < aw < 0.98) gives information concerning the nature and the relative importance of the 2 mechanisms involved in the dehydration—hydration processes: adsorption and capillary condensation. The state and location of water are described in each domain. An equation that gives the thickness t of the film of water adsorbed on the walls of pores versus the activity of water is developed. This t-curve is used to get, from the desorption isotherm, the pore size distribution curve of the studied hydrated materials. Then concepts of surface and fabric of clay pastes are discussed as a function of hydration and a mechanism is proposed to explain swelling and shrinkage of finely divided materials. Three kinds of surfaces, related to the aggregate fabric, are defined as a function of their capacity to adsorb water. Each kind of surface is determined by a specific technique: the total surface area (St) by ethylene glycol adsorption, the external surface area of particles (Ss) by nitrogen adsorption and the external surface area of aggregates (Se) by hydraulic conductivity measurements. As a consequence it is only with completely dispersed clays that swelling is a function of St. With unwell-dispersed clays, water adsorption, which induces swelling, successively occurs on St, Ss and Se surfaces.

The mineral in monomineralic glauconite pellets is an iron-rich mixed-layer illite-smectite (here called glauconite), often composed almost entirely of illite layers. The nature of the interlayering is closely analagous to that of aluminous illite-smectite and varies with the proportions of the layer types: >30 per cent smectite, randomly interstratified; 15–30 per cent smectite, allevardite-like ordering; < 15 per cent smectite, ‘IMII’ ordering.

Glauconite is analagous to aluminous illite-smectite chemically as well as structurally. A good correlation has been found between the number of potassium atoms per O10(OH)2 in structural formulas calculated from the chemical analyses and the proportion of illite layers as determined by X-ray powder diffraction methods. This relationship indicates a remarkably systematic increase in the potassium content of the illite layers with an increasing proportion of illite layers. This feature and the existence of ordered interlayering at high proportions of illite layers can be explained by crystal-chemical effects of illite layers on neighboring smectite layers. Glauconite differs from aluminous illite-smectite in that glauconite contains significantly less potassium per illite layer than does aluminous illite-smectite with the same proportion of illite layers except near the pure illite composition. The strength with which the interlayer potassium is held and the ease of conversion of smectite to illite layers in glauconite may be attributed to its 1M structure and, perhaps, to its high octahedral iron content, which lead to stronger bonding of potassium by allowing a higher tilt angle of the O-H axis of hydroxyls adjacent to the potassium ion.

The apparent octahedral cation occupancy in excess of two-thirds of the octahedral positions in many glauconites appears largely attributable to the presence of significant amounts of interlayer hydroxy-iron, aluminum and magnesium complexes in the smectite layers.

Four chlorite polytypes of Bailey and Brown (1962) have been identified by X-ray diffraction in clay-size chlorites of soils, sediments, and sedimentary rocks: (1) IIb, the polytype of common metamorphic and igneous chlorites; (2) Ib(ß = 90°); (3) Ib(ß = 97°); (4) Ia. An additional stacking arrangement. Iba, is defined herein as disordered chlorite which lacks an h0l diffraction band in the 2.4–2.5 Å region.

Most type-I chlorites are authigenic, as demonstrated by thin-section petrography. Type-I chlorites form during diagenesis, or less commonly during halmyrolysis, at temperatures and pressures less than those of low-grade metamorphism. A type-1 crystallization sequence is proposed, from least to most stable: Iba → Ib(ß = 97°) → Ib(ß = 90°). Conditions of low-grade metamorphism usually are necessary to cause conversion of Iba(ß = 90°) to IIb, the most stable and common polytype. Chemical composition has little or no influence upon polytype relative stabilities; temperature is much more important.

Sediment source areas with high relief, abundant rainfall, cold climate, and which contain IIb-chlorite-bearing metamorphic rocks, may yield essentially unweathered IIb chlorite to sites of deposition. Thus, clay-size IIb chlorite in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks can be interpreted as detrital. Caution is required, however, because IIb may be able to form authigenically at submetamor-phic temperatures, because it is the most stable polytype. Petrographic evidence is useful in such cases.

Chlorite polytypism as a geothermometer can be applied to several geologic problems: (1) the authigenic versus detrital origin of clay minerals in sedimentary rocks, particularly in graywacke matrix; (2) the recognition of diagenetic facies or gradients, areally and stratigraphically, within given geologic provinces; (3) the detection of hydrothermal and incipient metamorphic effects. Chlorite polytypism merits general application as an interpretive tool.

A white calcium bentonite (CaB) from the Kütahya region, Turkey, contains 35 wt. % opal-CT and 65 wt. 9c Ca-rich montmorillonite (CaM). Samples were heated at various temperatures between 100–1300°C for 2 h. Thermal gravimetric (TG), derivative thermal gravimetric (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves were determined. Adsorption and desorption of N2 at liquid N2 temperature for each heat-treated sample was determined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) data were obtained. The change in the <d(001) value and the deformation of the crystal structure of CaM depend on temperature. Deformation is defined here as changes of the clay by dehydration, dehydroxylation, recrystallization, shrinkage, fracture, etc. The activation energies related to the dehydration and dehydroxylation of CaB calculated from the thermogravimetric data are 33 and 59 kJ mol−1, respectively. The average deformation enthalpies, in the respective temperature intervals between 200–700°C and 700–900°C, were estimated to be 25 and 205 kJ mol−1 using CEC data and an approach developed in this study. The specific surface area (S) and the specific micropore-mesopore volume (V) calculated from the adsorption and desorption data, respectively, show a “zig zag” variation with increasing temperature to 700°C, but decrease rapidly above this temperature. The S and V values were 43 m2 g−1 and 0.107 cm3 g−1, respectively, for untreated bentonite. They reach a maximum at 500°C and are 89 m2 g−1 and 0.149 cm3 g−1 respectively. The XRD data clearly show that, at 500°C, where the irreversible dehydration is completed without any change in the crystal structure, the porosity of CaM reaches its maximum.

A combined powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption (XAS) study of Fe(III) cation ordering within pyroaurite is described. It is concluded that there is no correlation between Fe(III) cation positions over distances of a few tens of angstroms, but that there is a very high level of local ordering, involving the absence of Fe(III)-Fe(III) neighbors. These observations are rationalized in terms of a significant frequency of lattice defects in the form of cation vacancies or Mg for Fe(III) substitutions. These results are expected to be generalizable to other M(II)/M(III) layered double hydroxides (LDHs), but are in contrast to the long-range cation ordering observed in Li/Al LDHs. This raises the interesting possibility of differing properties and stabilities based on the degree of cation ordering.

Chromate (CrO42−) adsorption was investigated on kaolinite (0.2–2 μm) saturated with NaClO4 over a range of pH. Adsorption increased with decreasing pH because of protonation of chromate and/or variable charge sites on kaolinite. Chemical pretreatment to remove noncrystalline and crystalline oxide contaminants affected the magnitude of CrO42− adsorption, but not the pH range over which CrO42− adsorbed. Chromate adsorption at different sorbate and sorbent concentrations increased below the pHzpc for the kaolinite edge, suggesting the formation of weak surface complexes. If CrO42− and SO42− were present at equal concentration (5.0 × 10−7 M), the two solutes sorbed independently, suggesting binding to separate sites. The presence of excess SO42− (5.0 × 10−4 M), however, unexplainably enhanced CrO42− adsorption. The adsorption of both Chromate and sulfate can be described in terms of a site-binding model of the kaolinite edge, in which the edge is viewed as composite layers of Al and Si oxide. Surface complexation constants for CrO42− on kaolinite were similar to those for alumina, pointing to the importance of Al-OH edge sites in Chromate adsorption.

Clay samples from shales and bentonites in the Mancos Shale (Cretaceous) and its stratigraphic equivalents in the southern Rocky Mountain and Colorado Plateau have been analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction methods. The major clay in the shales is mixed layered illite/smectite, with 20–60% illite layers. The regional distribution of ordered vs. random interstratification in the illite/smectite is consistent with the concept of burial metamorphism in which smectite interlayers are converted to illite, resulting finally in ordered interstratification. The interstratification data correlate with other geologic information, including rank of coal and Laramide tectonic activity. In addition, contact metamorphism of the shale by Tertiary igneous intrusions produced a similar clay suite. Chemical variation within these shales (particularly the presence or absence of carbonate) affected the clay conversion reactions in the interbedded bentonites and the shale itself during the early stages of transformation. In extreme cases, shales and bentonites from a single outcrop may contain clays that range from pure smectite (calcareous shales) to ordered illite/smectite containing ⩾50% illite layers (noncalcareous shales). The use of mixed-layered illite/smectite compositions to infer thermal regimes, therefore, may be misleading unless allowance is made for local chemical controls.
