Lattice dynamic calculations for the sepiolite and palygorskite structures using polarized Raman and FTIR spectra provide a fundamental basis for interpreting spectral features by assigning vibrational modes. The Si-O stretch and O-Si-O bond bending force constants determined for palygorskite are similar to equivalent values calculated previously for other phyllosilicates. The Mg-O bond stretch values, on the other hand, are about half of those determined for the equivalent Al-O and Mg-O bond stretch environments in other phyllosilicates, suggesting that the bonding within the octahedral ribbons in palygorskite and sepiolite is weaker than that in the continuous octahedral sheets in micas. The weaker bonding allows more flexible octahedral environments in palygorskite and sepiolite, giving rise to higher probabilities for cation substitutions and vacancies relative to the micas. Above ∼700 cm−1 in the IR and 750 cm−1 in the Raman spectra, the eigenmodes are dominated by atomic displacements within the silicate sheets. Below 700 cm−1 the eigenmodes become mixed with motions among the Mg octahedra and the silicate sheets; the eigenmodes assigned to the most prominent peaks in the Raman spectra (near 700 cm−1) belong to this group. As mode frequencies decrease, the corresponding eigenmodes evolve from more localized Mg-O stretch, O-Mg-O bend and O-Si-O bend motions to longer-range motions such as silicate sheet deformations caused by silicate tetrahedra rotation and silicate sheet shearing around the Mg-octahedral sheets.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of layer charge on the hydration of Mg-saturated expandable 2:1 phyllosilicates. Water retained by 12 Mg-saturated clays at 54% relative humidity was quantified gravimetrically. X-ray diffraction and total chemical analysis were used to determine the hydratable surface area (447–759 m2 g−1) and layer charge [0.327–0.754 electrons per formula unit (e f.u.−1)] of each sample. Water retained by the clays increased with both hydratable surface area and layer charge of the clays. However, the increase in H2O content with layer charge occurred only on external surfaces of the clays. This result suggests that the H2O on external surfaces is localized around the cation/charge sites rather than forming multi-layers as was suggested previously. A model is proposed for the hydration of expandable 2:1 phyllosilicates. The model assumes that interlayer volume controls interlayer hydration and that the number of cation/charge sites on external surfaces controls hydration of external surfaces.

Using Garfield, Washington, nontronite as the model mineral system, methods and apparatus were developed to prepare reduced suspensions in citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) solution. These techniques were effective in removing excess, undesired solutes from reduced suspensions while maintaining a high Fe2+ content. They also enabled the preparation of dried, reduced films preferentially oriented with respect to the crystallographic c-axis. Supernatant solutions were collected and analyzed for Fe, Al, and Si, from which the extent of dissolution of the clay as a result of CBD treatment was assessed. Results indicated that very little Fe and Si were released to solution, but as much as about 8% of the total Al was solubilized. The highest levels of Al in solution were observed in CB treatments without dithionite.

Chemical data from three different series of diagenetic illite/smectites (I/S), analyzed statistically by two regresion techniques, indicate that the content of fixed-K per illite layer is not constant, but ranges from ~0.55 per O10(OH)2 for illite layers in randomly interstratified I/S (R=0; >50% smectite layers) to ~ 1.0 per O10(OH)2 for illite layers formed in ordered I/S (R>0; <50% smectite layers). By extrapolation of the experimental data, the following chemical characteristics were obtained for end-member illite derived from the alteration of smectite in bentonite: average fixed-K per illite layer = 0.75 per O10(OH)2; total charge = about -0.8; cation-exchange capacity = 15 meq/100 g; surface area (EGME) = 150 m2/g.

Adsorption isotherms for water vapor, c-spacing and heat of immersion in water of Na- and Ca-montmorillonite were measured at 25°C at various r.h. The amount of water adsorbed as a function of the r.h. increased gradually, whereas the c-spacing increased, and the heat of immersion (per mole of adsorbed water) decreased in steps. There was good agreement between the calorimetric data, the heat calculated from the isotherms by use of BET equation, and the calculations from the ion-dipole model. A model is presented to describe the hydration of sodium and calcium montmorillonite.

Bound water of sepiolite dehydrates in two steps in the temperature range of 250-650°C, as shown in the TG-curve. These steps are described here as steps II and III. At step II, half of the bound water is removed; other half at step III. From step II to III, discontinuous changes are confirmed in such properties as activation energy of dehydration, a-dimension, axial ratio, and intensities and spacings of X-ray powder reflections. A structural state at step II may be recognized as a distinct phase in the dehydration process.

The basal spacing of a set of smectites, with layer charges between 0.74 and 1.14 electrons per unit cell, have been measured while the smectites were in equilibrium with NaCl solutions having concentrations of 0.25 to 2.5 molal. Except for the most highly charged smectites, an expansion from ~15.5 to ~18.5 Å occurred as the NaCl concentrations were reduced. This expansion (or “crystalline swelling”) corresponds to the transition from two to three sheets of water between the silicate layers. A random interstratification of 15.5 and 18.5 Å structure units was present during the change and gave rise to broad diffraction peaks for the 001 reflections. A balance between cation hydration forces, interlamellar electrostatic forces, and van der Waals forces was apparently the basis of the relationship between surface charge and swelling. The results can be expressed in terms of the relative vapor pressures at which the transitions were half complete; these pressures increased with surface density of charge, and over the range of surface charge studied, the P/P0 values ranged from 0.943 to 0.974.

Low-temperature chlorites formed in diagenetic to low-grade metamorphic environments generally have greater Si contents and larger numbers of octahedral vacancies, and smaller Fe+Mg contents than higher-grade metamorphic chlorites. The compositional variations are characterized approximately by four end-member components: Al-free trioctahedral chlorite, chamosite, corundophilite, and sudoite. The solid solution is considered to be a random mix of cations and vacancies in the octahedral sites. Using the compositions of chlorites from Niger, Rouez, and Saint Martin diagenetic-hydrothermal series, a new, more convenient geothermometer, applicable to low-T chlorites is proposed and comparison made with geothermometers proposed previously. The chlorites studied contain appreciable amounts of Fe(III) (>14% of the total Fe), determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The calculations under which all Fe was regarded as ferrous gave considerable overestimates for the formation temperature, irrespective of the geothermometer used. This problem was reduced by taking into account the presence of Fe(III) in the octahedral sites. The geothermometer from this study gave more reasonable estimates than the geothermometers proposed by Walshe (1986) and Vidal et al. (2001), particularly in the case of the Niger chlorites which crystallized in the lowest-temperature conditions. The ordered-site substitution model of solid solution developed by Vidal et al. (2001) predicted satisfactorily the formation temperature of the Rouez chlorites and of some of the Saint Martin chlorites, suggesting that the chlorite compositions are controlled by the exchange at low-T conditions while they are controlled by Tschermak exchange at higher temperatures. The decreasing number of vacancies with temperature are poorer in Fe-rich than in Fe-poor chlorites. Furthermore, the ordered-site occupation of cations and vacancies in trioctahedral chlorite occurs concomitantly with the compositional changes ruled by increasing temperature conditions.

Selectivity of a number of vermiculites, montmorillonites and micas for K and Cs ions was determined by sorption of these ions from equilibrium solutions of diverse concentrations. The selectivity coefficients were related to the layer charge density and the area of the frayed edges in layer silicates.

Montmorillonites had the smallest selectivity for the two ions, while biotite and illite had the greatest selectivity. Selectivity of biotite and illite was limited to small concentrations of K, however. At greater concentrations the selectivity of vermiculite for K exceeded the selectivity of the micas.

The greater selectivity of vermiculites than montmorillonites for K and Cs ions was attributed to the greater layer charge density in vermiculites. The greater selectivity of micas than montmorillonites and vermiculites was attributed to the frayed edges of micas in addition to their larger layer charge density. As the frayed edges in illite were increased in area by removal of the interlayer K, the selectivity of illite for K also increased; thus confirming the selectivity of frayed edges for the K ions.

The atomic structure of dioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicate edge surfaces was calculated using pseudopotential planewave density functional theory. Bulk structures of pyrophyllite and ferripyrophyllite were optimized using periodic boundary conditions, after which crystal chemical methods were used to obtain initial terminations for ideal (110)- and (010)-type edge surfaces. The edge surfaces were protonated using various schemes to neutralize the surface charge, and total minimized energies were compared to identify which schemes are the most energetically favorable. The calculations show that significant surface relaxation should occur on the (110)-type faces, as well as in response to different protonation schemes on both surface types. This result is consistent with atomic force microscopy observations of phyllosilicate dissolution behavior. Bond-valence methods incorporating bond lengths from calculated structures can be used to predict intrinsic acidity constants for surface functional groups on (110)- and (010)-type edge surfaces. However, the occurrence of surface relaxation poses problems for applying current bond-valence methods. An alternative method is proposed that considers bond relaxation, and accounts for the energetics of various protonation schemes on phyllosilicate edges.

On the basis of neutron diffraction studies, the two inner-hydroxyl ions in highly ordered kaolinite were recently shown to be differently oriented. One of the inner-hydroxyl ions points generally toward a hole in the octahedral sheet and the other toward a hole in the tetrahedral sheet. These orientations and the locations of the other atoms in the primitive triclinic unit cell have now been determined for a sample of Keokuk kaolinite with improved precision compared with that reported earlier. Rietveld structure refinement was carried out for the entire crystal structure simultaneously (99 atom positional and 17 other parameters) with each of two newly collected sets of high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data. The different orientations of the inner-hydroxyl ions are the most marked evidence that the unit cell is not C centered. The positions of the inner-surface hydrogen atoms provide further evidence in that all differ from a C-centered relationship by six to eight estimated standard deviations in their y coordinates. The cell is, therefore, not centered. The space group is P1.

Viscosity and light-transmission measurements of dilute suspensions of montmorillonites having different exchangeable cations were used to calculate relative particle sizes as a function of cation composition, where particle size is expressed as the number of clay plates per tactoid relative to the number of plates per tactoid for Li-montmorillonite, after exchange of Li, Na, K, Cs, and Mg by Ca. Tactoid sizes increased in the order Li < Na < K < Mg < Ca, with the number of plates per tactoid relative to Li-montmorillonite varying from 1.5 for Na- to 6.1 for Ca-montmorillonite. The results for tactoid sizes derived from light transmission and those derived from viscosity data are in reasonable agreement with each other and with literature data for similar systems. Upon exchange of Ca-counterions for Li-, Na-, or K-coun-terions, a sharp initial decrease in tactoid size was observed over approximately the first 30% of cation exchange. Upon further exchange, tactoid sizes changed only slightly, but when Ca was exchanged for Cs or Mg, a much more gradual decrease in particle size was observed.

Certain clay minerals have the ability to catalyze the polymerization of some unsaturated organic Compounds (styrene, hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and yet to inhibit polymer formation from other closely related monomers (e.g. methyl methacrylate). This apparently contradictory behaviour of the clay minerals can be rationalized in terms of electron accepting and electron donating sites in the silicate layers. The electron acceptor sites are aluminium at crystal edges and transition metals in the higher valency state in the silicate layers; the electron donor sites are transition metals in the lower valency state.

The catalyzed polymerizations involve the conversion of the organic molecule to a reactive intermediate; thus where the clay mineral accepts an electron from the vinyl monomer a radical-cation is formed, where the organic compound gains an electron it forms a radical-anion. Examples of these reactions are discussed.

The inhibition of polymerization processes involves the conversion of reactive organic intermediates, such as free radicals, which have been formed by heat or radical initiators, to non-reactive entities. For example, loss of an electron from the free radical gives a carbonium ion; in some cases this will not undergo polymerization. An example of this type is the thermal polymerization of methyl methacrylate.

The color reactions on clay minerals are useful in predicting the electron accepting or electron donating behaviour of the clay minerals because they proceed by similar mechanisms to the polymerization reactions. For example, the benzidine blue reaction is a one electron transfer from the organic molecule to the electron accepting sites in the mineral (aluminium edges, transition metals in higher valency state).

Masking of the crystal edge with a polyphosphate destroys the electron accepting properties of the crystal edge; this technique can be used to control the reactivity of the mineral and to distinguish between the crystal edge and transition metal sites as electron-acceptor sites in the clay minerals.

Beidellite was synthesized hydrothermally from a noncrystalline gel at 320°C and 130 bar pressure. The beidellitic character of the product was verified by infrared spectroscopy on the NH4+-exchanged form. Intercalation was achieved with hydroxy-aluminum solutions having different OH/Al molar ratios. The solutions were investigated by several methods, including 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance. Essentially, two Al species were detected: monomelic Al and a polymerized form containing Al in four-fold coordination. This latter species was found to be selectively fixed in the interlamellar region, which resulted in a stable spacing of 18 Å at 110°C and 16.2 Å at 700°C. The pillared beidellites had specific surface areas of > 300 m2/g, mainly due to micropores. Both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites were evidenced by infrared spectroscopy using pyridine as a probe molecule.

Mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) was formed by reacting the Chambers or Polkville montmorillonite hydrothermally at 270° and 350°C from several hours to more than 15 weeks. Reactions were conducted in closed vessels containing K or mixed K-Na, K-Ca, or K-Mg solutions of varying concentrations. The reaction rate and the rate of ordering of I/S for the reaction smectite + K+ → mixed-layer I/S + SiO2 was inhibited by the addition of Na+ Ca2+, and Mg2+; the inhibitory strength of Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, on an equivalent basis, increased approximately in the ratio 1:10:30. The first order reaction-rate constants for the reactions at 270° and 350°C indicate an activation energy of about 30 kcal/mole.

In the experimental system studied, the reaction smectite → mixed-layer I/S appeared to proceed by solid state transformation, as suggested by: (1) rapid dissolution of large amounts of silica, probably creating an Al-enriched residue; (2) similarity of particle size and morphology of the mixed-layer products to those of the original montmorillonite, implying no extensive dissolution of Al3+; and (3) relatively high activation energy compared to published values for silicate dissolution.

A preliminary survey of electronic absorption spectra of clay minerals reveals the utility of u.v.-visible spectroscopy in the elucidation of structural, physical, and chemical properties of such systems. Spectra, which were obtained in the suspension, film, and single crystal states (where applicable), are interpreted in terms of iron-associated transitions. Microcrystalline clay minerals typically show Fe(lll) in octahedral oxo-ligand geometry whereas mica-type minerals may show a range of iron species, including octahedral Fe(III), tetrahedral Fe(III), and octahedral Fe(II). Iron affects the local site geometry and in “high iron” minerals may dictate layer geometry and subsequently the crystalline form.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds, [Mg1-xAlx(OH)2]x+ [xX−·n H2O], where X− = ½CO32− or OH−, were prepared by hydrothermal syntheses at $P_{H{}_{2}O}=100MPa$ and T = 100°–350°C. Starting materials were MgO, γ-Al2O3, H2O, and MgC2O4·2H2O. The synthesis depended on temperature, pressure, the Al/(Al + Mg) ratio x, and the CO2 content of the starting material. Previously an Al content of x = 0.33 was thought to be the upper limit in these double-layer compounds, but by using pressure the Al-content was increased to x = 0.44. Up to x = 0.33, a0 decreased linearly to about 3.04 Å, but for x ≥0.33, a0 remained nearly constant at this value. For the synthesized products the layer thickness c’ varied between 7.40 and 7.57 Å in contrast to the natural phases wherein c’ varies from 7.60 to 7.80 Å. At higher temperatures CO2-free syntheses, i.e., those without Mg-oxalate, resulted in a disordered hydrotalcite-like phase. The transition temperature between the ordered and the disordered hydrotalcite-like phase depended on the Al-content, x.

The interaction of H+- and Cu2+-ions with Ca-montmorillonite was investigated in 0.1 mol/dm3 solutions of Ca(CIO4)2 at 298.2 K by Potentiometrie titrations using both glass electrodes (for H+) and ion specific electrodes (for Cu2+ ). The experimental data were interpreted on the basis of the surface complexation model. The calculations were performed with the least-squares program FITEQL (Westall, 1982) using the constant capacitance approximation. The best fit was obtained with a set of equilibria of the general form

Clay-modified electrode research indicates that adsorbed complexes are electroactive if the adsorption sites are clay edges. Interlayer adsorbed complexes may be electroactive if a charge shuttle is added or if interlayer swelling is large. Conductivity of the film towards anionic species depends upon the swelling of the clay, which depends on the electrolyte concentration and speciation. The diffusion coefficients measured by electrochemical experiments agree well with alternative measurements.

Black shale is a dark-colored mudrock containing organic matter that may have generated hydrocarbons in the subsurface or that may yield hydrocarbons by pyrolysis. Many black shale units are enriched in metals severalfold above expected amounts in ordinary shale. Some black shale units have served as host rocks for syngenetic metal deposits.

Black shales have formed throughout the Earth's history and in all parts of the world. This suggests that geologic processes and not geologic settings are the controlling factors in the accumulation of black shale. Geologic processes are those of deposition by which the raw materials of black shale are accumulated and those of diagenesis in response to increasing depth of burial.

Depositional processes involve a range of relationships among such factors as organic productivity, clastic sedimentation rate, and the intensity of oxidation by which organic matter is destroyed. If enough organic material is present to exhaust the oxygen in the environment, black shale results.

Diagenetic processes involve chemical reactions controlled by the nature of the components and by the pressure and temperature regimens that continuing burial imposes. For a thickness of a few meters beneath the surface, sulfate is reduced and sulfide minerals may be deposited. Fermentation reactions in the next several hundred meters result in biogenic methane, followed successively at greater depths by decarboxylation reactions and thermal maturation that form additional hydrocarbons. Suites of newly formed minerals are characteristic for each of the zones of diagenesis.
