Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a coherent rank 2 sheaf on a scheme $Y\,\subset \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{n}}$ of dimension at least two and let $X\,\subset \,Y$ be the zero set of a section $\sigma \,\in \,{{H}^{0}}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the functor that deforms the pair $\left( \mathcal{F},\,\sigma \right)$ and the two functors that deform $\mathcal{F}$ on $Y$, and $X$ in $Y$, respectively. By imposing some conditions on two forgetful maps between the functors, we prove that the scheme structure of e.g., the moduli scheme ${{\text{M}}_{\text{Y}}}\left( P \right)$ of stable sheaves on a threefold $Y$ at $\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$, and the scheme structure at ($X$) of the Hilbert scheme of curves on $Y$ become closely related. Using this relationship, we get criteria for the dimension and smoothness of ${{\text{M}}_{\text{Y}}}\left( P \right)$ at $\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$, without assuming $\text{Ex}{{\text{t}}^{2}}\left( \mathcal{F},\,\mathcal{F} \right)\,=\,0$. For reflexive sheaves on $Y\,=\,{{\mathbb{P}}^{3}}$ whose deficiency module $M\,=\,H_{*}^{1}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$ satisfies $_{0}\text{Ex}{{\text{t}}^{2}}\left( M,\,M \right)\,=\,0$ (e.g., of diameter at most 2), we get necessary and sufficient conditions of unobstructedness that coincide in the diameter one case. The conditions are further equivalent to the vanishing of certain graded Betti numbers of the free graded minimal resolution of $H_{*}^{0}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$. Moreover, we show that every irreducible component of ${{\text{M}}_{\mathbb{P}}}^{3}\left( P \right)$ containing a reflexive sheaf of diameter one is reduced (generically smooth) and we compute its dimension. We also determine a good lower bound for the dimension of any component of ${{\text{M}}_{\mathbb{P}}}^{3}\left( P \right)$ that contains a reflexive stable sheaf with “small” deficiency module $M$.

1. Introduction. K. Deleeuw and I. Glicksberg [4] proved that if S and T are commutative topological semigroups with identity, then the Bochner almost periodic compactification of S × T is the direct product of the Bochner almost periodic compactifications of S and T. In Section 3 we consider the semidirect product of two semi topological semigroups with identity and two unital C*-subalgebras and of W(S) and W(T) respectively, where W(S) is the weakly almost periodic functions on S. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions and for a semidirect product compactification of to exist such that this compactification is a semi topological semigroup and such that this compactification is a topological semigroup. Moreover, we obtain the largest such compactifications.

We introduce a new device of measuring the degree of the failure of convergence in the ergodic theorem along subsequences of integers. Relations with other types of bad behavior in ergodic theory and applications to weighted averages are also discussed.

Let Mm be a closed PL manifold of dimension m. Then a concordance between two PL-homeomorphisms h0, h1:M → M is a PL-homeomorphismH: M × I → M × I such that H|M × 0 = h0 and H|M × 1 = h. Concordance is an equivalence relation and in his paper [2], M. Kato classifies PL-homeomorphisms of Sp × Sq up to concordance. To do this he treats first the problem of classifying those homeomorphisms that induce the identity in homology, and then describes the automorphisms of the cohomology ring that can arise from homeomorphisms of Sp × Sq. In this paper we show that for sufficiently connected PL-manifolds that embed in codimension 1, one can extend Kato's classification of the homeomorphisms that induce the identity in homology.

In a mixed problem one is required to find a solution of a system of partial differential equations when the values of certain combinations of the derivatives are given on two or more distinct intersecting surfaces. If the differential equations arise from some physical process, the correct boundary conditions are usually apparent. Many particular problems of this type have been solved by special methods such as separation of variables and the method of images. However, no general criterion has been given for what constitutes a correctly set mixed problem. In fact such problems have usually been formulated in connection with hyperbolic differential equations with data prescribed on two surfaces (called the initial and boundary surfaces).

It is known that the four-colour problem for the faces of a map on a sphere is isomorphic with the four-colour problem for the vertices of its dual, and the problem is here discussed in the latter form. The isomorphs described below are concerned with codes for the four colours and for a change in colour as we pass along an edge from vertex to vertex. In the first (algebraic) isomorph, the coding involves the four fourth roots of unity, and leads to a graphical representation in the complex plane. In the second (arithmetical) isomorph, the coding involves the integers mod 4, and also the face-edge incidence matrix of the dual.

We study Tychonoff spaces $X$ with the property that, for all topological embeddings $X\,\to \,Y$, the induced map $C(Y)\,\to \,C(X)$ is an epimorphism of rings. Such spaces are called absolute $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{R}$-epic. The simplest examples of absolute $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{R}$-epic spaces are $\sigma $-compact locally compact spaces and Lindelöf $P$-spaces. We show that absolute $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{R}$-epic first countable spaces must be locally compact.

However, a “bad” class of absolute $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{R}$-epic spaces is exhibited whose pathology settles, in the negative, a number of open questions. Spaces which are not absolute $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{R}$-epic abound, and some are presented.

Many years ago, I defined (8) three types of exceptional unode on an algebraic surface, which I called U*8, U*9, U*10, corresponding, on a non-singular model of the surface, to sets of six, seven, and eight rational curves, each of grade — 2, with the intersection patterns represented by the Coxeter-Dynkin graphs now usually known as E6, E7, E8:

where each dot represents a curve, and linked dots intersecting curves. In each case we shall denote the curves in the horizontal sequence by S1, s2, … from left to right, and the extra curve meeting s3 by s*.

We extend the basic theory of Lie algebras of affine algebraic groups to the case of pro-affine algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic 0. However, some modifications are needed in some extensions. So we introduce the pro-discrete topology on the Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$ of the pro-affine algebraic group $G$ over $K$, which is discrete in the finite-dimensional case and linearly compact in general. As an example, if $L$ is any sub Lie algebra of $\mathcal{L}(G)$, we show that the closure of $\left[ L,\,L \right]$ in $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is algebraic in $\mathcal{L}(G)$.

We also discuss the Hopf algebra of representative functions $H(L)$ of a residually finite dimensional Lie algebra $L$. As an example, we show that if $L$ is a sub Lie algebra of $\mathcal{L}(G)$ and $G$ is connected, then the canonical Hopf algebra morphism from $K\left[ G \right]$ into $H(L)$ is injective if and only if $L$ is algebraically dense in $\mathcal{L}(G)$.

The distinct Hausdorff compactifications δX of a completely regular (Hausdorff) space X are in one-one correspondence with the admissible proximity relations δ on X, or alternatively, with the admissible totally bounded uniform structures for X. (See [1], [2].) Thus, δX is the Smirnov compactification of (X, δ). Generalized uniform structures for X will be described by means of pseudometrics on X (cf. [5], [7], [13]). Let where is in the proximity class π(δ) associated with (X, δ). Then a subset S of X is σ-discrete of gauge if , for all x, y ∈ S where x ≠ y.

Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $F$ be a field of characteristic not $p$ and not containing the group ${{\mu }_{p}}$ of $p$-th roots of unity. We consider cyclic $p$-algebras over $F$ by descent from $L\,=\,F\left( {{\mu }_{p}} \right)$. We generalize a theorem of Albert by showing that if ${{\mu }_{{{p}^{n}}}}\,\subseteq \,L$, then a division algebra $D$ of degree ${{p}^{n}}$ over $F$ is a cyclic algebra if and only if there is $d\,\in \,D$ with ${{d}^{{{P}^{n}}}}\,\in \,F\,-\,{{F}^{P}}$. Let $F(p)$ be the maximal $p$-extension of $F$. We show that $F(p)$ has a noncyclic algebra of degree $p$ if and only if a certain eigencomponent of the $p$-torsion of $\text{Br(F(p)(}{{\mu }_{p}}\text{))}$ is nontrivial. To get a better understanding of $F(p)$, we consider the valuations on $F(p)$ with residue characteristic not $p$, and determine what residue fields and value groups can occur. Our results support the conjecture that the $p$ torsion in $\text{Br}(F(p))$ is always trivial.

We characterize the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials in terms of the special form of the coefficients in the expansion ${{\mathcal{D}}_{q}}{{P}_{n}}\left( x \right)$ in the basis $\left\{ {{P}_{n}}\left( x \right) \right\},{{\mathcal{D}}_{q}}$ being the Askey-Wilson divided difference operator. The polynomials are assumed to be symmetric, and the connection coefficients are multiples of the reciprocal of the square of the ${{L}^{2}}$ norm of the polynomials. A similar characterization is given for the discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials. A new proof of the evaluation of the connection coefficients for big $q$-Jacobi polynomials is given.

An explicit formula forthe mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi )\vert ^2$ is known, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors p. Bounds on the relative class number of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$ follow. Lately, the authors obtained that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi )\vert ^2$ is asymptotic to $\pi ^2/6$, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p\equiv 1\ \ \pmod {2d}$ which are trivial on a subgroup H of odd order d of the multiplicative group $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$, provided that $d\ll \frac {\log p}{\log \log p}$. Bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac {p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$ follow. Here, for a given integer $d_0>1$, we consider the same questions for the nonprimitive odd Dirichlet characters $\chi '$ modulo $d_0p$ induced by the odd primitive characters $\chi $ modulo p. We obtain new estimates for Dedekind sums and deduce that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi ')\vert ^2$ is asymptotic to $\frac {\pi ^2}{6}\prod _{q\mid d_0}\left (1-\frac {1}{q^2}\right )$, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors p which are trivial on a subgroup H of odd order $d\ll \frac {\log p}{\log \log p}$. As a consequence, we improve the previous bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac {p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$. Moreover, we give a method to obtain explicit formulas and use Mersenne primes to show that our restriction on d is essentially sharp.
