In (5),I considered two-term conditions in π-exact couples, of which the exact couple of Federer (7) is an example. Let M(X, Y)be the space of all maps from X to Y with the compact-open topology. Our aim in this paper is to construct a π-exact couple , where Xis a finite-dimensional (in the sense of Lebesgue) metric space and , a certain (rather large) class of spaces. Specifically, is the class of all topological spaces Xwhich possess the following property (P).

(P) Let Y be a (possibly infinite) simplicial complex. There exists x0 ∈ X and y0 ∊ Y such that [X, x0]≃ [Y, y0].

In § 5 it will be seen that contains all CW complexes and all metric absolute neighbourhood retracts (ANR)s.

The matrix spaces under consideration are the four main types of irreducible bounded symmetric domains given by Cartan (5). Let z = (zjk) be a matrix of complex numbers, z' its transpose, z* its conjugate transpose and I = I(n) the identity matrix of order n. Then the first three types are defined by

We shall call a linear function on the elements of a ring R skew-symmetric if it vanishes whenever at least two of the variables are equal. Here we shall study rings R of characteristic not 2 which satisfy the following two identities:

Both of these identities hold in alternative rings. The fact that F(w, x, y, z) is skew-symmetric in alternative rings is an important tool in the study of such rings. It is also obvious that both identities hold in commutative rings. But unlike other recent generalizations of commutative and alternative rings it turns out that there exist simple, finite dimensional algebras of degree two which are neither alternative nor commutative and satisfy (1) and (2).

The subsemigroups of the projective group on the line that are described in this paper are those that can be generated by a pair of infinitesimal transformations. One denotes by G the connected component of the identity of this group; Theorem 1 gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a pair of infinitesimal transformations to generate a subsemigroup which is equal to G (and hence is actually a group). This condition is reformulated in a geometric manner in Theorem 1*.

To every pair of algebraic number fields with isomorphic Witt rings one can associate a number, called the minimum number of wild primes. Earlier investigations have established lower bounds for this number. In this paper an analysis is presented that expresses the minimum number of wild primes in terms of the number of wild dyadic primes. This formula not only gives immediate upper bounds, but can be considered to be an exact formula for the minimum number of wild primes.

The purpose of this paper is to prove that the general derivative of a completely additive singular set-function defined on certain measurable subsets of an abstract measure space is zero almost everywhere. As a corollary the celebrated Lebesgue decomposition theorem has been sharpened.

This result is well known for set-functions defined on measurable subsets of an n-dimensional Euclidean space (2, p. 119). The proof in this setting depends on two things: Vitali's covering theorem and the fact that for every measurable set A there exists an open set O which contains A and the images of O and A under the set-function can be made arbitrarily close. Here the covering theorem is due to Trjitzinsky and the open set is replaced by an envelope, an entirely measure-theoretic concept.

In [18], the author initiated an investigation of compact, Banach-module-valued derivations of C*-algebras. In collaboration with C. A. Akemann [3] and S.-K. Tsui [16], he determined the structure of all compact and weakly compact, A-valued derivations of a C*-algebra A, and of all compact, B(H)-valued derivations of a C*-subalgebra of B(H), the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. In this paper, we begin the study of weakly compact, B(H)-valued derivations of C*-subalgebras of B(H).

In several recent papers we have made use of these sequences in analysis and combinatorics. In [6] we show that the class of all sets which are either finite or the range of a lacunary sequence is “full” in the sense that if (tk) is a real sequence and for each then (tk) is an l1 sequence, that is,

In [3] the class of all finite unions of sets of is shown to consist of exactly those sets of integers, A, whose characteristic sequence, χA, is in the well known summability space bs + c0. More recently, in [1], we study lacunary sequences in connection with the conjecture of P.

This paper is devoted to the study of convergence and variation of operator spectra with respect to the distance G of Gokhburg and Markus [5] for subspaces and linear operators in a Banach space. We use the convention of Kato [7] and refer to convergence with respect to G as generalizedconvergence.

Given a class of topological spaces and a class of maps of topological spaces, our interest is in characterization of the class () of topological spaces whose every -image lies in . The class () is referred to as the -resolvent of and is the largest class of spaces smaller than closed under -images (provided is closed under composition and includes identity maps).

The following paper defines a new type of ordering of higher level on a commutative ring. This definition allows the set of all orderings of level n to be given a topology which we show is consistent with the topology of the real spectrum.

Throughout the paper, G will denote an additively written, but not always abelian, group of finite order n; and X = (xij) will denote a square matrix of order n with entries from G and whose rows and columns are numbered 0, 1, …, n − 1. We call X a cartesian array (afforded by G) if

The present work stems from the following classical result, due to G. H. Hardy, J. E. Littlewood, G. Pólya [7], and R. Rado [10].

We study monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces that are invariant with respect to a group of suitable isometric isomorphisms, and we show that they always admit a maximal extension which preserves the same invariance. A similar result applies to Lipschitz maps in Hilbert spaces, thus providing an invariant version of Kirszbraun–Valentine extension theorem. We then provide a relevant application to the case of monotone operators in $L^{p}$-spaces of random variables which are invariant with respect to measure-preserving isomorphisms, proving that they always admit maximal dissipative extensions which are still invariant by measure-preserving isomorphisms. We also show that such operators are law invariant, a much stronger property which is also inherited by their resolvents, the Moreau–Yosida approximations, and the associated semigroup of contractions. These results combine explicit representation formulae for the maximal extension of a monotone operator based on self-dual Lagrangians and a refined study of measure-preserving maps in standard Borel spaces endowed with a nonatomic measure, with applications to the approximation of arbitrary couplings between measures by sequences of maps.
