For a graph G, let $f(G)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a bipartite subgraph of G. Given a positive integer m and a fixed graph H, let $f(m,H)$ denote the minimum possible cardinality of $f(G)$, as G ranges over all graphs on m edges that contain no copy of H. We prove bounds on $f(m,H)$ for some bipartite graphs H and give a bound for a conjecture of Alon et al. [‘MaxCut in H-free graphs’, Combin. Probab. Comput. 14 (2005), 629–647] concerning $f(m,K_{4,s})$.

We first establish a lower bound on the size and spectral radius of a graph G to guarantee that G contains a fractional perfect matching. Then, we determine an upper bound on the distance spectral radius of a graph G to ensure that G has a fractional perfect matching. Furthermore, we construct some extremal graphs to show all the bounds are best possible.

For a graph G and a family of graphs $\mathcal {F}$, the Turán number ${\mathrm {ex}}(G,\mathcal {F})$ is the maximum number of edges an $\mathcal {F}$-free subgraph of G can have. We prove that ${\mathrm {ex}}(G,\mathcal {F})\ge {\mathrm {ex}}(K_r, \mathcal {F})$ if the chromatic number of G is r and $\mathcal {F}$ is a family of connected graphs. This result answers a question raised by Briggs and Cox [‘Inverting the Turán problem’, Discrete Math. 342(7) (2019), 1865–1884] about the inverse Turán number for all connected graphs.

Let $\Omega =\mathbb {Z}\omega _1+\mathbb {Z}\omega _2$ be a lattice in $\mathbb {C}$ with invariants $g_2,g_3$ and $\sigma _{\Omega }(z)$ the associated Weierstrass $\sigma $-function. Let $\eta _1$ and $\eta _2$ be the quasi-periods associated to $\omega _1$ and $\omega _2$, respectively. Assuming $\eta _2/\eta _1$ is a nonzero real number, we give an upper bound for the number of algebraic points on the graph of $\sigma _{\Omega }(z)$ of bounded degrees and bounded absolute Weil heights in some unbounded region of $\mathbb {C}$ in the following three cases: (i) $\omega _1$ and $\omega _2$ algebraic; (ii) $g_2$ and $g_3$ algebraic; (iii) the algebraic points are far from the lattice points.

We investigate the large values of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function $\zeta (s)$ on the 1-line. We give a larger lower bound for $\max _{t\in [T,2T]}|\zeta ^{(\ell )}(1+{i} t)|$, which improves the previous result established by Yang [‘Extreme values of derivatives of the Riemann zeta function’, Mathematika 68 (2022), 486–510].

We prove some zero density theorems for certain families of Dirichlet L-functions. More specifically, the subjects of our interest are the collections of Dirichlet L-functions associated with characters to moduli from certain sparse sets and of certain fixed orders.

Let $[t]$ be the integral part of the real number t and let $\mathbb {1}_{{\mathbb P}}$ be the characteristic function of the primes. Denote by $\pi _{\mathcal {S}}(x)$ the number of primes in the floor function set $\mathcal {S}(x) := \{[{x}/{n}] : 1\leqslant n\leqslant x\}$ and by $S_{\mathbb {1}_{{\mathbb P}}}(x)$ the number of primes in the sequence $\{[{x}/{n}]\}_{n\geqslant 1}$. Improving a result of Heyman [‘Primes in floor function sets’, Integers 22 (2022), Article no. A59], we show

for $x\to \infty $, where $C_{\mathbb {1}_{{\mathbb P}}} := \sum _{p} {1}/{p(p+1)}$, $c>0$ is a positive constant and $\varepsilon $ is an arbitrarily small positive number.

In this paper, we show that every pair of sufficiently large even integers can be represented as a pair of eight prime cubes and k powers of $2$. In particular, we prove that $k=335$ is admissible, which improves the previous result.

A partition of a positive integer n is called $\ell $-regular if none of its parts is divisible by $\ell $. Denote by $b_{\ell }(n)$ the number of $\ell $-regular partitions of n. We give a complete characterisation of the arithmetic of $b_{23}(n)$ modulo $11$ for all n not divisible by $11$ in terms of binary quadratic forms. Our result is obtained by establishing a relation between the generating function for these values of $b_{23}(n)$ and certain modular forms having complex multiplication by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt {-69})$.

We study the discriminants of the minimal polynomials $\mathcal {P}_n$ of the Ramanujan $t_n$ class invariants, which are defined for positive $n\equiv 11\pmod {24}$. We show that $\Delta (\mathcal {P}_n)$ divides $\Delta (H_n)$, where $H_n$ is the ring class polynomial, with quotient a perfect square and determine the sign of $\Delta (\mathcal {P}_n)$ based on the ideal class group structure of the order of discriminant $-n$. We also show that the discriminant of the number field generated by $j({(-1+\sqrt {-n})}/{2})$, where j is the j-invariant, divides $\Delta (\mathcal {P}_n)$. Moreover, using Ye’s computation of $\log|\Delta(H_n)|$ [‘Revisiting the Gross–Zagier discriminant formula’, Math. Nachr. 293 (2020), 1801–1826], we show that 3 never divides $\Delta(H_n)$, and thus $\Delta(\mathcal{P}_n)$, for all squarefree $n\equiv11\pmod{24}$.

For a nonconstant elliptic surface over $\mathbb {P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb {Q}$, it is a result of Silverman [‘Heights and the specialization map for families of abelian varieties’, J. reine angew. Math. 342 (1983), 197–211] that the Mordell–Weil rank of the fibres is at least the rank of the group of sections, up to finitely many fibres. If the elliptic surface is nonisotrivial, one expects that this bound is an equality for infinitely many fibres, although no example is known unconditionally. Under the Bunyakovsky conjecture, such an example has been constructed by Neumann [‘Elliptische Kurven mit vorgeschriebenem Reduktionsverhalten. I’, Math. Nachr. 49 (1971), 107–123] and Setzer [‘Elliptic curves of prime conductor’, J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 10 (1975), 367–378]. In this note, we show that the Legendre elliptic surface has the desired property, conditional on the existence of infinitely many Mersenne primes.

The central kernel $K(G)$ of a group G is the (characteristic) subgroup consisting of all elements $x\in G$ such that $x^{\gamma }=x$ for every central automorphism $\gamma $ of G. We prove that if G is a finite-by-nilpotent group whose central kernel has finite index, then the full automorphism group $Aut(G)$ of G is finite. Some applications of this result are given.

We extend a result of Lieb [‘On the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the intersection of two domains’, Invent. Math. 74(3) (1983), 441–448] to the fractional setting. We prove that if A and B are two bounded domains in $\mathbb R^N$ and $\lambda _s(A)$, $\lambda _s(B)$ are the lowest eigenvalues of $(-\Delta )^s$, $0<s<1$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, there exists some translation $B_x$ of B such that $\lambda _s(A\cap B_x)< \lambda _s(A)+\lambda _s(B)$. Moreover, without the boundedness assumption on A and B, we show that for any $\varepsilon>0$, there exists some translation $B_x$ of B such that $\lambda _s(A\cap B_x)< \lambda _s(A)+\lambda _s(B)+\varepsilon .$

Open conjectures state that, for every $x\in [0,1]$, the orbit $(x_n)_{n=1}^\infty $ of the mean-median recursion

with initial data $(x_1,x_2,x_3)=(0,x,1)$, is eventually constant, and that its transit time and limit functions (of x) are unbounded and continuous, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for the slightly modified recursion

first suggested by Akiyama, the transit time function is unbounded but the limit function is discontinuous.

Let $M=(\begin {smallmatrix}\rho ^{-1} & 0 \\0 & \rho ^{-1} \\\end {smallmatrix})$ be an expanding real matrix with $0<\rho <1$, and let ${\mathcal D}_n=\{(\begin {smallmatrix} 0\\ 0 \end {smallmatrix}),(\begin {smallmatrix} \sigma _n\\ 0 \end {smallmatrix}),(\begin {smallmatrix} 0\\ \gamma _n \end {smallmatrix})\}$ be digit sets with $\sigma _n,\gamma _n\in \{-1,1\}$ for each $n\ge 1$. Then the infinite convolution

is called a Moran–Sierpinski measure. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ to admit an infinite orthogonal set of exponential functions. Furthermore, we give the exact cardinality of orthogonal exponential functions in $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ when $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ does not admit any infinite orthogonal set of exponential functions based on whether $\rho $ is a trinomial number or not.

Given a Fell bundle $\mathscr C\overset {q}{\to }\Xi $ over the discrete groupoid $\Xi $, we study the symmetry of the associated Hahn algebra $\ell ^{\infty ,1}(\Xi \!\mid \!\mathscr C)$ in terms of the isotropy subgroups of $\Xi $. We prove that $\Xi $ is symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric) if and only if all of the isotropy subgroups are symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric). We also characterise hypersymmetry using Fell bundles with constant fibres, showing that for discrete groupoids, ‘hypersymmetry’ equals ‘rigid symmetry’.

Celebrating 100 years of the Banach contraction principle, we prove some fixed point theorems having all ingredients of the principle, but dealing with common fixed points of a contractive semigroup of nonlinear mappings acting in a modulated topological vector space. This research follows the ideas of the author’s recent papers [‘On modulated topological vector spaces and applications’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 101 (2020), 325–332, and ‘Normal structure in modulated topological vector spaces’, Comment. Math. 60 (2020), 1–11]. Modulated topological vector spaces generalise, among others, Banach spaces and modular function spaces. The interest in modulars reflects the fact that the notions of ‘norm like’ but ‘noneuclidean’ (and not even necessarily convex) constructs to measure a level of proximity between complex objects are frequently used in science and technology. To prove our fixed point results in this setting, we introduce a new concept of Opial sets using analogies with the norm-weak and modular versions of the Opial property. As an example, the results of this work can be applied to spaces like $L^p$ for $p> 0 $, variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot )}$ where $1 \leq p(t) < + \infty $, Orlicz and Musielak–Orlicz spaces.
