This paper focuses on the vanishing limit problem for the three-dimensional incompressible Phan-Thien–Tanner (PTT) system, which is commonly used to describe the dynamic properties of polymeric fluids. Our purpose is to show the relation of the PTT system to the well-known Oldroyd-B system (with or without damping mechanism). The suitable a priori estimates and global existence of strong solutions are established for the PTT system with small initial data. Taking advantage of uniform energy and decay estimates for the PTT system with respect to time $t$ and coefficients $a$ and $b$, then allows us to justify in particular the vanishing limit for all time. More precisely, we prove that the solution $(u,\,\tau )$ of PTT system with $0\leq b\leq Ca$ converges globally in time to some limit $(\widetilde {u},\,\widetilde {\tau })$ in a suitable Sobolev space when $a$ and $b$ go to zero simultaneously (or, only $b$ goes to zero). We may check that $(\widetilde {u},\,\widetilde {\tau })$ is indeed a global solution of the corresponding Oldroyd-B system. In addition, a rate of convergence involving explicit norm will be obtained. As a byproduct, similar results are also true for the local a priori estimates in large norm.

We study a class of left-invertible operators which we call weakly concave operators. It includes the class of concave operators and some subclasses of expansive strict $m$-isometries with $m > 2$. We prove a Wold-type decomposition for weakly concave operators. We also obtain a Berger–Shaw-type theorem for analytic finitely cyclic weakly concave operators. The proofs of these results rely heavily on a spectral dichotomy for left-invertible operators. It provides a fairly close relationship, written in terms of the reciprocal automorphism of the Riemann sphere, between the spectra of a left-invertible operator and any of its left inverses. We further place the class of weakly concave operators, as the term $\mathcal {A}_1$, in the chain $\mathcal {A}_0 \subseteq \mathcal {A}_1 \subseteq \ldots \subseteq \mathcal {A}_{\infty }$ of collections of left-invertible operators. We show that most of the aforementioned results can be proved for members of these classes. Subtleties arise depending on whether the index $k$ of the class $\mathcal {A}_k$ is finite or not. In particular, a Berger–Shaw-type theorem fails to be true for members of $\mathcal {A}_{\infty }$. This discrepancy is better revealed in the context of $C^*$- and $W^*$-algebras.

We study the existence of large solutions for nonlocal Dirichlet problems posed on a bounded, smooth domain, associated with fully nonlinear elliptic equations of order $2\,s$, with $s\in (1/2,\,1)$, and a coercive gradient term with subcritical power $0< p<2\,s$. Due to the nonlocal nature of the diffusion, new blow-up phenomena arise within the range $0< p<2\,s$, involving a continuum family of solutions and/or solutions blowing-up to $-\infty$ on the boundary. This is in striking difference with the local case studied by Lasry–Lions for the subquadratic case $1< p<2$.

For linear differential systems, the Sacker–Sell spectrum (dichotomy spectrum) and the contractible set are the same. However, we claim that this is not true for the linear difference equations. A counterexample is given. For the convenience of research, we study the relations between the dichotomy spectrum and the contractible set under the framework on time scales. In fact, by a counterexample, we show that the contractible set could be different from dichotomy spectrum on time scales established by Siegmund [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 2002]. Furthermore, we find that there is no bijection between them. In particular, for the linear difference equations, the contractible set is not equal to the dichotomy spectrum. To counter this mismatch, we propose a new notion called generalized contractible set and we prove that the generalized contractible set is exactly the dichotomy spectrum. Our approach is based on roughness theory and Perron's transformation. In this paper, a new method for roughness theory on time scales is provided. Moreover, we provide a time-scaled version of the Perron's transformation. However, the standard argument is invalid for Perron's transformation. Thus, some novel techniques should be employed to deal with this problem. Finally, an example is given to verify the theoretical results.

The Schrödinger–Poisson system describes standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation interacting with the electrostatic field. In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of positive ground states to the planar Schrödinger–Poisson system with a nonlinearity having either a subcritical or a critical exponential growth in the sense of Trudinger–Moser. A feature of this paper is that neither the finite steep potential nor the reaction satisfies any symmetry or periodicity hypotheses. The analysis developed in this paper seems to be the first attempt in the study of planar Schrödinger–Poisson systems with lack of symmetry.

We show that products of sufficiently thick Cantor sets generate trees in the plane with constant distance between adjacent vertices. Moreover, we prove that the set of choices for this distance has non-empty interior. We allow our trees to be countably infinite, which further distinguishes this work from previous results on patterns in fractal sets. This builds on the authors’ previous work on graphs and distance sets over products of Cantor sets of sufficient Newhouse thickness.

We show that any embedding $\mathbb {R}^d \to \mathbb {R}^{2d+2^{\gamma (d)}-1}$ inscribes a trapezoid or maps three points to a line, where $2^{\gamma (d)}$ is the smallest power of $2$ satisfying $2^{\gamma (d)} \geq \rho (d)$, and $\rho (d)$ denotes the Hurwitz–Radon function. The proof is elementary and includes a novel application of nonsingular bilinear maps. As an application, we recover recent results on the nonexistence of affinely $3$-regular maps, for infinitely many dimensions $d$, without resorting to sophisticated algebraic techniques.

In this work, we study a quasilinear elliptic problem involving the 1-Laplacian operator, with a discontinuous, superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity involving the Heaviside function $H(\cdot - \beta )$. Our approach is based on an analysis of the associated p-Laplacian problem, followed by a thorough analysis of the asymptotic behaviour or such solutions as $p \to 1^+$. We study also the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions, as $\beta \to 0^+$ and we prove that it converges to a solution of the original problem, without the discontinuity in the nonlinearity.

We construct a strongly local regular Dirichlet form on the golden ratio Sierpinski gasket, which is a self-similar set without a finitely ramified cell structure, via a study on the trace of an electrical network on an infinite graph. The Dirichlet form is the unique one that is self-similar in the sense of an infinite iterated function system, and is decimation invariant with respect to a graph-directed construction. The proof is based on a fixed point problem of a renormalization map, inspired by Sabot's celebrated work for finitely ramified fractals. Lastly, the Hunt process associated with the Dirichlet form satisfies a two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate.

In this paper, we are interested in investigating notions of stability for generalized linear differential equations (GLDEs). Initially, we propose and revisit several definitions of stability and provide a complete characterization of them in terms of upper bounds and asymptotic behaviour of the transition matrix. In addition, we illustrate our stability results for GLDEs to linear periodic systems and linear impulsive differential equations. Finally, we prove that the well-known definitions of uniform asymptotic stability and variational asymptotic stability are equivalent to the global uniform exponential stability introduced in this article.

We investigate the continuity and differentiability of the Hardy constant with respect to perturbations of the domain in the case where the problem involves the distance from a boundary submanifold. We also investigate the case where only the submanifold is deformed.

In this paper we state some sharp maximum principle, i.e. we characterize the geometry of the sets of minima for supersolutions of equations involving the $k$-th fractional truncated Laplacian or the $k$-th fractional eigenvalue which are fully nonlinear integral operators whose nonlocality is somehow $k$-dimensional.

We obtain a complete topological classification of $k$-folding map-germs on generic surfaces in $\mathbb {R}^3$, discover new robust features of surfaces and recover, in a unified way, many of the robust features that were obtained previously by considering the contact of a surface with lines, planes or spheres.

In this article, we obtain transformation formulas analogous to the identity of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood in the setting of primitive Maass cusp form over the congruence subgroup $\Gamma _0(N)$ and also provide an equivalent criterion of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function associated with the primitive Maass cusp form over $\Gamma _0(N)$.

The main objective of this paper is to answer the questions posed by Robinson and Sadowski [22, p. 505, Commun. Math. Phys., 2010] for the Navier–Stokes equations. Firstly, we prove that the upper box dimension of the potential singular points set $\mathcal {S}$ of suitable weak solution $u$ belonging to $L^{q}(0,T;L^{p}(\mathbb {R}^{3}))$ for $1\leq \frac {2}{q}+\frac {3}{p}\leq \frac 32$ with $2\leq q<\infty$ and $2< p<\infty$ is at most $\max \{p,q\}(\frac {2}{q}+\frac {3}{p}-1)$ in this system. Secondly, it is shown that $1-2s$ dimension Hausdorff measure of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions satisfying $u\in L^{2}(0,T;\dot {H}^{s+1}(\mathbb {R}^{3}))$ for $0\leq s\leq \frac 12$ is zero, whose proof relies on Caffarelli–Silvestre's extension. Inspired by Barker–Wang's recent work [1], this further allows us to discuss the Hausdorff dimension of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions if the gradient of the velocity is under some supercritical regularity.

We consider entropy solutions to the eikonal equation $|\nabla u|=1$ in two-space dimensions. These solutions are motivated by a class of variational problems and fail in general to have bounded variation. Nevertheless, they share several of their fine properties with BV functions: we show in particular that the set of non-Lebesgue points has at least one co-dimension.

Suppose $2< p<\infty$ and $\varphi$ is a holomorphic self-map of the open unit disk $\mathbb {D}$. We show the following assertions:

This paper is focused on spreading dynamics for a discrete Nicholson's blowflies model with time convolution kernel. This problem arises in the invasive activity of blowflies scattered in discrete spatial environment and has distributed maturated age. We found that for a general convolution kernel, the model can exhibit travelling wave phenomena in a discrete spatial habitat. In particular, we determine the minimal wave speed of travelling waves by deriving the non-existence of travelling waves, and we demonstrate that the minimal wave speed can determine the long time behaviour of solutions with compact initial function. Moreover, we prove that all travelling waves are strictly increasing, which implies that the waveforms remain monotone in the propagation process. Some numerical simulations are also presented to confirm the analytical results.

This work is devoted to the study of the sub-critical case of an anisotropic fully parabolic Keller–Segel chemotaxis system. We prove the existence of nonnegative weak solutions of (1.1) without restriction on the size of the initial data.
