In the present paper we determine the Laplace transforms of the modified Bessel function of the second kind Kn(t±mx), where m is any positive integer. The Laplace transforms are given in (2) and (4) below, p being the transform parameter and having positive real part.

Let R be a ring with an identity and a nilpotent ideal N. Let G be a group and let R(G) be the group ring of G over R. The aim of this paper is to study the relationships between the automorphisms of G and R-linear automorphisms of R(G) which either preserve the augmentation or do so modulo the ideal N. We shall show, for example, that if G is a unique product group ([6], Chapter 13, Section 1) then every automorphism of R(G) is modulo N induced from some automorphism of G. This result, which is immediate if, for instance, R is an integral domain, is here requiring of proof since R(G) has non-trivial units (e.g. if N ≠ 0, 1 + n(g − h), ∀ n ∈ N, ∀g, h ∈ G is a unit of augmentation 1), the existence of which is responsible for some of the difficulties inherent in the present investigation. We are obliged to the referee for several helpful suggestions and, in particular, for the proof of Lemma 2.2 whose use obviates our previous combinatorial arguments.

These equations are solved by the ordinary methods applicable to linear equations with constant coefficients.

In this note, we determine fields K and groups G that are either nilpotent or FC and such that the set of torsion elements of the group ring KG forms a subgroup.

Every discrete definable subset of a closed asymptotic couple with ordered scalar field ${\boldsymbol {k}}$ is shown to be contained in a finite-dimensional ${\boldsymbol {k}}$-linear subspace of that couple. It follows that the differential-valued field $\mathbb {T}$ of transseries induces more structure on its value group than what is definable in its asymptotic couple equipped with its scalar multiplication by real numbers, where this asymptotic couple is construed as a two-sorted structure with $\mathbb {R}$ as the underlying set for the second sort.

In (5) and (6) we studied certain subgroups of infinite dimensional linear groups over rings. In particular we investigated how the structure of the subgroups was related to the structure of the rings over which the linear groups were defined. It became clear that it might prove useful to study generalised nilpotent properties of rings analogous to Baer nilgroups and Gruenberg groups. We look briefly at some classes of generalised nilpotent rings in this paper and obtain a lattice diagram exhibiting all the strict inclusions between the classes.

The object of this paper is to discuss conditions for a maximum or minimum of functions of integrals of the type

employing the methods of the Calculus of Variations.

If an oriented manifold M immerses in codimension k, then the normal bundle has dimension k such that its Euler class χ є Hk(M; Z) and χ2 є H2k(M; Z). (Cf. (3)).

If M is the complex Grassmann manifold G2(Cn) of 2-planes in Cn (n = 4, 5,…, 15, 17), then dim M = 4n – 8 ≡ d and we shall show that although M immerses in R2d–1 by classical results (3), M does not immerse in Rd+d/2.

The same result was obtained for n = 4 and 5 by Connell (2) and for n = 6 and 7 by the author (6). The nonimmersion results of this paper are new for n = 8, 9, …, 15, 17 and they are an improvement over the result for the general G2(Cn) obtained in (5). In this paper, we use generators of the cohomology ring of G2(Cn) different from those used in (2) and (6) and this simplifies the calculations considerably.

The structure of completely prime ideals in any structural matrix near-rings is determined. Partial descriptions are obtained for prime, nil, nilpotent, and locally nilpotent ideals of structural matrix near-rings. Their associated radicals are also studied in this paper.

The result of Ballantine [1] to the effect that a singular matrix A is a product of k idempotent matrices if and only if the rank of I – A does not exceed k times the nullity of A is generalized to endomorphisms of a class of independence algebras.

Our subject is a set of equations

Our first task is to determine whether the equations (1) are self-consistent. Secondly, if they are self-consistent, we ask what follows from them for a given subset of the unknowns, e.g. for (uj+1, …, uk) in other words we wish to eliminate (u1, …, uj). In particular we wish to eliminate all the variables but one, say uk. We shall in fact find that either uk is arbitrary or else that it has only to satisfy a single linear recurrence relation : and the order of that relation is of interest to us. Thirdly, we ask that reduction to standard form is possible, with or without a transformation of the unknowns themselves.

The complex Stiefel manifold Wn,k, where n≦k≦1, is a space whose points are k-frames in Cn. By using the formula of McCarty [4], we will make the calculations of the Whitehead products in the groups π*(Wn,k). The case of real and quaternionic will be treated by Nomura and Furukawa [7]. The product [[η],j1l] appears as generator of the isotropy group of the identity map of Stiefel manifolds. In this note we use freely the results of the 2-components of the homotopy groups of real and complex Stiefel manifolds such as Paechter [8], Hoo-Mahowald [1], Nomura [5], Sigrist [9] and Nomura-Furukawa [6].

Let f be a continuous real valued function defined on [−1, 1] and let En(f) denote the degree of best uniform approximation to f by algebraic polynomial of degree at most n. The supremum norm on [a, b] is denoted by ∥.∥[a, b] and the polynomial of degree n of best uniform approximation is denoted by Pn. We find a class of functions f such that there exists a fixed a ∈(−1, 1) with the following property

for some positive constants C and N independent of n. Moreover the sequence is optimal in the sense that if is replaced by then the above inequality need not hold no matter how small C > 0 is chosen.

We also find another, more general class a functions f for which

infinitely often.

In this note it is shown that the class of all multipliers from the d-parameter Hardy space $H_{{\rm prod}}^1 ({\open T}^d)$ to L2 (𝕋d) is properly contained in the class of all multipliers from L logd/2L (𝕋d) to L2(𝕋d).

It is shown that, if a non-linear locally finite simple group is a union of finite simple groups, then the centralizer of every element of odd order has a series of finite length with factors which are either locally solvable or non-abelian simple. Moreover, at least one of the factors is non-linear simple. This is also extended to abelian subgroup of odd orders.

Much of the work on the theory of diffraction by an infinite wedge has been for cases of harmonic time-dependence. Oberhettinger (1) obtained an expression for the Green's function of the wave equation in the two dimensional case of a line source of oscillating current parallel to the edge of a wedge with perfectly conducting walls. Solutions of the time-dependent wave equation have been obtained by Keller and Blank (2), Kay (3) and more recently by Turner (4) who considered the diffraction of a cylindrical pulse by a half plane.

In this paper we shall employ the nonlinear alternative of Leray–Schauder and known sign properties of a related Green's function to establish the existence results for the nth-order discrete focal boundary-value problem. Both the singular and non-singular cases will be discussed.
