If an oriented manifold M immerses in codimension k, then the normal bundle has dimension k such that its Euler class χ є Hk(M; Z) and χ2 є H2k(M; Z). (Cf. (3)).

If M is the complex Grassmann manifold G2(Cn) of 2-planes in Cn (n = 4, 5,…, 15, 17), then dim M = 4n – 8 ≡ d and we shall show that although M immerses in R2d–1 by classical results (3), M does not immerse in Rd+d/2.

The same result was obtained for n = 4 and 5 by Connell (2) and for n = 6 and 7 by the author (6). The nonimmersion results of this paper are new for n = 8, 9, …, 15, 17 and they are an improvement over the result for the general G2(Cn) obtained in (5). In this paper, we use generators of the cohomology ring of G2(Cn) different from those used in (2) and (6) and this simplifies the calculations considerably.

The result of Ballantine [1] to the effect that a singular matrix A is a product of k idempotent matrices if and only if the rank of I – A does not exceed k times the nullity of A is generalized to endomorphisms of a class of independence algebras.

The structure of completely prime ideals in any structural matrix near-rings is determined. Partial descriptions are obtained for prime, nil, nilpotent, and locally nilpotent ideals of structural matrix near-rings. Their associated radicals are also studied in this paper.

An analytic function is generally given either directly as a power-series, or at anyrate in some form which can readily be converted into a power-series. The power-series is not an altogether satisfactory method of representing the function, on account of the failure of its convergence outside its circle of convergence; in this respect it is decidedly inferior to the method of representing the function by a continued fraction, as this latter expression in many cases converges over the whole plane, except on certain curves.

We consider semilinear elliptic problems in which the right-hand-side nonlinearity depends on a parameter λ > 0. Two multiplicity results are presented, guaranteeing the existence of at least three non-trivial solutions for this kind of problem, when the parameter λ belongs to an interval (0,λ*). Our approach is based on variational techniques, truncation methods and critical groups. The first result incorporates as a special case problems with concave–convex nonlinearities, while the second one involves concave nonlinearities perturbed by an asymptotically linear nonlinearity at infinity.

The notion of an atomic operator between spaces of measurable functions was introduced in 2002 in a paper by Drakhlin, Ponosov and Stepanov in order to provide a reasonable generalization of local operators useful for applications. It has been shown that, roughly speaking, atomic operators amount to compositions of local operators with shifts. A natural problem is then when a continuous-in-measure atomic operator can be represented as a composition of a Nemytskiiˇ (composition) operator generated by a Carathéodory function, and a shift operator. In this paper we will show that the answer to this question is inherently related to the possibility of extending an atomic operator with continuity from a space of functions measurable with respect to some $\sigma$-algebra to a larger space of functions measurable with respect to a larger $\sigma$-algebra, as well as to the possibility of extending any $\sigma$-homomorphism from a smaller-measure algebra to a $\sigma$-homomorphism on a larger-measure algebra. We characterize precisely the condition on the respective $\sigma$-algebras which provides such possibilities and induces the positive answer to the above representation problem.

In a recent paper Turnbull, discussing a rational method for the reduction of a singular matrix pencil to canonical form, has shown how the lowest row, or column, minimal index may be determined directly without reducing the pencil to canonical form. It is the purpose of this note to show how all such indices may be determined, and at the same time to give conditions, somewhat simpler than the usual ones, for the equivalence of two matrix pencils.

We study a variant of the mean curvature flow for closed, convex hypersurfaces where the normal velocity is a non-homogeneous function of the principal curvatures. We show that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a certain pinching condition, then this is preserved and the flow converges to a sphere under rescaling.

Let υ0 be a valuation of a field K0 with value group G0 and υ be an extension of υ0 to a simple transcendental extension K0(x) having value group G such that G/G0 is not a torsion group. In this paper we investigate whether there exists t∈K0(x)/K0 with υ(t) non-torsion mod G0 such that υ is the unique extension to K0(x) of its restriction to the subfield K0(t). It is proved that the answer to this question is “yes” if υ0 is henselian or if υ0 is of rank 1 with G0 a cofinal subset of the value group of υ in the latter case, and that it is “no” in general. It is also shown that the affirmative answer to this problem is equivalent to a fundamental equality which relates some important numerical invariants of the extension (K, υ)/(K0, υ0).

The famous five halves theorem of Boardman states that, if T: Mm → Mm is a smooth involution defined on a non-bounding closed smooth m-dimensional manifold Mm (m > 1) and if

If the dimension m is written as m = 5k − c, where k ≥ 1 and 0 ≤ c < 5, the theorem states that the dimension n of the fixed submanifold is at least β(m), where β(m) = 2k if c = 0, 1, 2 and β(m) = 2k − 1 if c = 3, 4. In this paper, we give, for each m > 1, the equivariant cobordism classification of involutions (Mm, T), for which the fixed submanifold F attains the minimal dimension β(m).

Is the cohomology of the classifying space of a p-compact group, with Noetherian twisted coefficients, a Noetherian module? In this paper we provide, over the ring of p-adic integers, such a generalization to p-compact groups of the Evens–Venkov Theorem. We consider the cohomology of a space with coefficients in a module, and we compare Noetherianity over the field with p elements with Noetherianity over the p-adic integers, in the case when the fundamental group is a finite p-group.
