Let G be a non-discrete LCA group with dual group Γ. Denote by M(G) the usual convolution algebra of bounded Borel measures on G and Ma(G) those μ ∈ M(G) which are absolutely continuous with respect to mG—the Haar measure on G.

The authors have recently treated (2) the problem of finding subsets E of the real line , of type Fσ, such that E–E contains an interval and the k-fold vector sum (k)E is of measure zero. Positive results can be obtained, for all k, on the basis of a recent theorem of J. A. Haight (3), following earlier partial results (1), (4) for k ≦ 7; and indeed in these cases the problem has a solution with E a perfect set. An analogous problem, apparently in most respects subtler than the first, is the following. Do there exist finite regular Borel measures μ on such that is absolutely continuous (where is the adjoint of μ) and the kth convolution power μk is singular? Both problems are of interest in the general context of elucidating the properties of the measure algebra or, more generally, M(G) for locally compact abelian G. The second problem may be regarded as an attempt to provide (at least one aspectof) a multiplicity theory for the first.

Felsen (1) has shown that when a plane wave is incident along the axis of a rigid cone of narrow apex angle an approximate expression for the scattered wave involves an integral of the form

where is a Bessel function of the third kind, k a constant and , is the Legendre (conical) function of the first kind.

In (5) and (6) we studied certain subgroups of infinite dimensional linear groups over rings. In particular we investigated how the structure of the subgroups was related to the structure of the rings over which the linear groups were defined. It became clear that it might prove useful to study generalised nilpotent properties of rings analogous to Baer nilgroups and Gruenberg groups. We look briefly at some classes of generalised nilpotent rings in this paper and obtain a lattice diagram exhibiting all the strict inclusions between the classes.

Recently Passman (attributing the origin of the idea to Zalesskii) has defined the following ideal in a ring, (2).

Definition. For a unitary ring R,

For a group algebra KG over a field K of characteristic p ≠ 0, he has proved the radical property:

Let R be a ring with an identity and a nilpotent ideal N. Let G be a group and let R(G) be the group ring of G over R. The aim of this paper is to study the relationships between the automorphisms of G and R-linear automorphisms of R(G) which either preserve the augmentation or do so modulo the ideal N. We shall show, for example, that if G is a unique product group ([6], Chapter 13, Section 1) then every automorphism of R(G) is modulo N induced from some automorphism of G. This result, which is immediate if, for instance, R is an integral domain, is here requiring of proof since R(G) has non-trivial units (e.g. if N ≠ 0, 1 + n(g − h), ∀ n ∈ N, ∀g, h ∈ G is a unit of augmentation 1), the existence of which is responsible for some of the difficulties inherent in the present investigation. We are obliged to the referee for several helpful suggestions and, in particular, for the proof of Lemma 2.2 whose use obviates our previous combinatorial arguments.

It is of some interest to the theory of locally convex *-algebras to know under what conditions such an algebra A is a pre-C*-algebra (the topology of A can be described by a submultiplicative norm such that ‖x*x‖ = ‖x‖2, ∀x∈A). We recall that a locally convex *-algebra is a complex *-algebra A with the structure of a Hausdorff locally convex topological vector space such that the multiplication is separately continuous, and the involution is continuous.

If an oriented manifold M immerses in codimension k, then the normal bundle has dimension k such that its Euler class χ є Hk(M; Z) and χ2 є H2k(M; Z). (Cf. (3)).

If M is the complex Grassmann manifold G2(Cn) of 2-planes in Cn (n = 4, 5,…, 15, 17), then dim M = 4n – 8 ≡ d and we shall show that although M immerses in R2d–1 by classical results (3), M does not immerse in Rd+d/2.

The same result was obtained for n = 4 and 5 by Connell (2) and for n = 6 and 7 by the author (6). The nonimmersion results of this paper are new for n = 8, 9, …, 15, 17 and they are an improvement over the result for the general G2(Cn) obtained in (5). In this paper, we use generators of the cohomology ring of G2(Cn) different from those used in (2) and (6) and this simplifies the calculations considerably.

In (3) it is shown that, for a locally compact abelian group G and x∈G, δx has a logarithm in M(G) if and only if x has finite order. Since M(G) can be identified with the multipliers of L1(G), one might expect a similar result for the algebras of multipliers on Lp(G) for 1 < p < ∞. However, in contrast, it is shown in (2) that for a locally compact abelian group G and 1 < p < ∞, every translation operator on Lp(G) has a logarithm in the multiplier algebra. Here we consider whether the same results are true for non-abelian groups.

Consider the Fredholm equation of the second kind

and Jv is the Bessel function of the first kind. Here ka(t) and h(x) are given, the unknown function is f(x), and the solution is required for large values of the real parameter a. Under reasonable conditions the solution of (1.1) is given by its Neumann series (a set of sufficient conditions on ka(t) for the convergence of this series is given in Section 4, Lemma 2). However, in many applications the convergence of the series becomes too slow as a→∞ for any useful results to be obtained from it, and it may even happen that f(x)→∞ as a→∞. It is the aim of the present investigation to consider this case, and to show how under fairly general conditions on ka(t) an approximate solution may be obtained for large a, the approximation being valid in the norm of L2(0, 1). The exact conditions on ka(t) and the main result are given in Section 4. Roughly, it is required that 1 -ka(at) should behave like tp(p>0) as t→0. For example, ka(at) might be exp ⌈-(t/ap)⌉.

In [3] Fuller introduced an index (now called the Fuller index) in order to study periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations. The objective of this paper is to give a simple generalisation of the Fuller index which can be used to study periodic points of flows in Banach spaces. We do not claim any significant breakthrough but merely suggest that the simplistic approach, presented here, might prove useful for the study of non-linear differential equations. We show our results can be used to study functional differential equations.

The complex Stiefel manifold Wn,k, where n≦k≦1, is a space whose points are k-frames in Cn. By using the formula of McCarty [4], we will make the calculations of the Whitehead products in the groups π*(Wn,k). The case of real and quaternionic will be treated by Nomura and Furukawa [7]. The product [[η],j1l] appears as generator of the isotropy group of the identity map of Stiefel manifolds. In this note we use freely the results of the 2-components of the homotopy groups of real and complex Stiefel manifolds such as Paechter [8], Hoo-Mahowald [1], Nomura [5], Sigrist [9] and Nomura-Furukawa [6].

The infinite continued fraction

In the Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 1948, there appear two papers by Lars Gårding and Turnbull respectively (Gårding [1], Turnbull [2]) which formulate the theory of Cayley and Capelli operators associated with symmetric matrices. Turnbull derives the modification, appropriate to symmetric matrices, of Capelli's Theorem, which states that (taking a third order operator for the sake of ease in writing)

with a similar meaning for the determinantal differential operator, while the symbols are polarisations (Capelli [1]; cf. Turnbull [1], p. 116). Gårding's theorem deals with the effect of such modified Capelli operators on powers of the determinant of the symmetric matrix in question. The subject of this note is an alternative derivation of the modified Capelli theorem and of Gårding's theorem.

Finding a common point in a finite intersection of sets, say, $C=\cap _{i=1}^{n} F(T_i)$, where each $T_i$ is a non-expansive-type mapping, is a central task in mathematics as it cuts across different areas of application, such as road design and medical image reconstruction. There are many algorithms for approximating solutions of such problems. Of particular interest in the implementation of these algorithms are cost and speed. This is due to the large computations to be performed at each step of the iterative process. One of the most efficient methods that optimizes the time of computation and cost of implementation is the asynchronous-parallel algorithm method. In this paper, we prove a weak convergence theorem for the asynchronous sequential inertial (ASI) algorithm (introduced by Heaton and Censor in [H. Heaton and Y. Censor, Asynchronous sequential inertial iterations for common fixed points problems with an application to linear systems, J. Glob. Optim. 74 (2019), 95–119.] ) for strictly pseudo-contractive mappings in Hilbert spaces. Under additional mild conditions, we also obtain a strong convergence theorem. Finally, we apply the ASI algorithm to solving convex minimization problems and Hammerstein integral equations.

An analytic function is generally given either directly as a power-series, or at anyrate in some form which can readily be converted into a power-series. The power-series is not an altogether satisfactory method of representing the function, on account of the failure of its convergence outside its circle of convergence; in this respect it is decidedly inferior to the method of representing the function by a continued fraction, as this latter expression in many cases converges over the whole plane, except on certain curves.
