Recently Passman (attributing the origin of the idea to Zalesskii) has defined the following ideal in a ring, (2).

Definition. For a unitary ring R,

For a group algebra KG over a field K of characteristic p ≠ 0, he has proved the radical property:

It is shown that if f is an analytic function of sufficiently small exponential type in the right half-plane, which takes integer values on a subset of the positive integers having positive lower density, then f is a polynomial.

Let Un(q) denote the upper triangular group of degree n over the finite field with q elements. It is known that irreducible constituents of supercharacters partition the set of all irreducible characters Irr(Un(q)). In this paper we present a correspondence between supercharacters and pattern subgroups of the form Uk(q) ∩ wUk(q), where w is a monomial matrix in GLk(q) for some k < n.

A partially ordered set, is ω-chain complete if, for every countable chain, or ω-chain, in P, the least upper bound of C, denoted by sup C, exists. Notice that C could be empty, so an ω-chain complete partially ordered set has a least element, denoted by 0.

In the Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 1948, there appear two papers by Lars Gårding and Turnbull respectively (Gårding [1], Turnbull [2]) which formulate the theory of Cayley and Capelli operators associated with symmetric matrices. Turnbull derives the modification, appropriate to symmetric matrices, of Capelli's Theorem, which states that (taking a third order operator for the sake of ease in writing)

with a similar meaning for the determinantal differential operator, while the symbols are polarisations (Capelli [1]; cf. Turnbull [1], p. 116). Gårding's theorem deals with the effect of such modified Capelli operators on powers of the determinant of the symmetric matrix in question. The subject of this note is an alternative derivation of the modified Capelli theorem and of Gårding's theorem.

The infinite continued fraction

is periodic with period l and is equal to a quadratic surd if and only if the partial quotients, ak, are integers or rational numbers [1]. We shall also assume that they are positive. The transformation discussed below applies only to pure periodic fractions where n is zero.

The *-algebra A1 is defined to be the free unital *-algebra with one generator x. A *-ideal I of A1 is defined to be a C*-ideal if A1/I may be embedded into a C*-algebra. It is proved that if I is a *-ideal of A1 generated by polynomials in A1, then I is a C*-ideal. This is not true for general *-ideals of A1.

Let R be a Cohen–Macaulay local ring. It is shown that under some mild conditions, the Cohen–Macaulay property is preserved under linkage. We also study the connection of the (Sn) locus of a horizontally linked module and the attached primes of certain local cohomology modules of its linked module.

The object of this paper is firstly to extend the theorem of Pascal concerning six points of a conic to sets of 2 (n + 1) points of the rational normal curve of order n in space of n dimensions; secondly to explain why a wider extension to other sets of 2 (n + 1) points in [n] must be sought; and lastly to give briefly an extension to [3] and [4] which will be further generalised in a later paper. The striking feature of Pascal's theorem—that each of the sixty ways of arranging the points in a cycle, or as vertices of a closed polygon, leads to a different version of the theorem—is retained in the following extension to [n].

A ring R is said to be a P-ancestral ring if all proper non-zero sub-rings of R have property P. If p is the property that every proper non-zero sub-ring of R is a (two-sided) ideal then the ring Z of rational integers furnishes an example of a P-ancestral ring.

and Jv is the Bessel function of the first kind. Here ka(t) and h(x) are given, the unknown function is f(x), and the solution is required for large values of the real parameter a. Under reasonable conditions the solution of (1.1) is given by its Neumann series (a set of sufficient conditions on ka(t) for the convergence of this series is given in Section 4, Lemma 2). However, in many applications the convergence of the series becomes too slow as a→∞ for any useful results to be obtained from it, and it may even happen that f(x)→∞ as a→∞. It is the aim of the present investigation to consider this case, and to show how under fairly general conditions on ka(t) an approximate solution may be obtained for large a, the approximation being valid in the norm of L2(0, 1). The exact conditions on ka(t) and the main result are given in Section 4. Roughly, it is required that 1 -ka(at) should behave like tp(p>0) as t→0. For example, ka(at) might be exp ⌈-(t/ap)⌉.

In a previous paper we studied the asymptotic distribution of the multiparameter eigenvalues of uniformly right definite multiparameter Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problems. In this paper we extend the analysis to deal with multiparameter Sturm–Liouville problems satisfying uniform left definiteness, and non-uniform left and right definiteness.

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first to correct the statement of Theorem 1 in [4], and secondly to consider related problems in the class of ideally finite Lie algebras.

We introduce an action of a discrete subgroup $\varGamma$ of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})^n$ on the space of pseudodifferential operators of $n$ variables, and construct a map from the space of Hilbert modular forms for $\varGamma$ to the space of pseudodifferential operators invariant under such a $\varGamma$-action, which is a lifting of the symbol map of pseudodifferential operators. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a certain type of pseudodifferential operator to be $\varGamma$-invariant.

We show that if G is an infinitely generated locally (polycyclic-by-finite) group with cohomology almost-everywhere finitary, then every finite subgroup of G acts freely and orthogonally on some sphere.

Let G be a non-discrete LCA group with dual group Γ. Denote by M(G) the usual convolution algebra of bounded Borel measures on G and Ma(G) those μ ∈ M(G) which are absolutely continuous with respect to mG—the Haar measure on G.

In (3) it is shown that, for a locally compact abelian group G and x∈G, δx has a logarithm in M(G) if and only if x has finite order. Since M(G) can be identified with the multipliers of L1(G), one might expect a similar result for the algebras of multipliers on Lp(G) for 1 < p < ∞. However, in contrast, it is shown in (2) that for a locally compact abelian group G and 1 < p < ∞, every translation operator on Lp(G) has a logarithm in the multiplier algebra. Here we consider whether the same results are true for non-abelian groups.
