We define a new functional which is gauge invariant on the space of all smooth connections of a vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold. This functional is a generalization of the classical Yang-Mills functional. We derive its first variation formula and prove the existence of critical points. We also obtain the second variation formula.

It is shown that a condition on the order of a meromorphic function in a result of A. A. Gol’dberg cannot be relaxed.

We introduce a geometric condition of Bloch type which guarantees that a subset of a bounded convex domain in several complex variables is degenerate with respect to every iterated function system. Furthermore, we discuss the relations of such a Bloch-type condition with the analogous hyperbolic Lipschitz condition.

A few definite integrals involving more than two Legendre functions in the integrand have been considered by Ferrers, Adams, Dougall, Nicholson and Bailey. We take for example the following integrals.

A classical result of Baer states that a finite group G which is the product of two normal supersoluble subgroups is supersoluble if and only if Gʹ is nilpotent. In this article, we show that if G = AB is the product of supersoluble (respectively, w-supersoluble) subgroups A and B, A is normal in G and B permutes with every maximal subgroup of each Sylow subgroup of A, then G is supersoluble (respectively, w-supersoluble), provided that Gʹ is nilpotent. We also investigate products of subgroups defined above when $ A\cap B=1 $ and obtain more general results.

In the works known to us which contain historical or bibliographical information about circular cubics no sufficient indication of the researches of Maclaurin is found. Yet many of the classic propositions connected with these curves are due to this eminent geometer, who investigated constructions for unicursal circular cubics, for certain non-unicursal circular cubics, and for the special circular cubics now known as the trisectrix of Maclaurin, the oblique cissoid, and the strophoid. His name does not appear even in the list of writings on the strophoid published by Tortolini and Günther.

Zubov states an elegant necessary and sufficient limit set condition for positive orbital stability of compact invariant sets in his book “Metody A. M. Lyapunova i ih Primenenie” [11]. Stated in terms of our terminology of L– for the negative limit set, Zubov's proposition is as follows: A necessary and sufficient condition for positive stability of a compact invariant set M isL–(X\M)∩M=Ø. Unfortunately, Zubov's condition L–(X\M)∩M=Ø has subsequently been shown to be necessary but not sufficient (see [9]). Bass and Ura devote considerable effort in [2] and [9[ to correcting Zubov's proposition and Desbrow obtains additional results principally concerning unstable sets in [6] and [7]. Ura gives his classical corrected prolongational version of Zubov's assertion on locally compact phase spaces in [9] and extends it to any closed invariant set with compact boundary on such spaces in [10].

We prove that Finsler metrics on Euclidean domains can be approximated in a certain sense by so-called Finsler-type metrics. As an application we improve upon previous estimates on the fundamental solution of higher order parabolic equations.

The conception of the integral of one function with respect to another was introduced by Stieltjes in his classical memoir on continued fractions. He denned the integral as

and gave the formula for integration by parts.

In a recent paper I discussed, for a given series Σan the relation between the conditions

where 0 < ρ < 1 and p is a positive integer. It was there proved (Theorem 14) that (2) implies (1) but that the converse is not necessarily true. My object in this note is to render more precise the connection between (1) and (2) by showing that (2) is equivalent to (1′), where (1′) is (1) with the additional restriction that Σn−1wn is convergent. The proof of this equivalence relation is based on a technique which was introduced and developed by Andersen and is similar to the proofs in my former paper. The note concludes with a brief discussion of the corresponding results for the case ρ = 1.

In a paper entitled “Sets of anticommuting matrices” Eddington proved that if El, E2, …., Eqform a set of q four-rowed square matrices satisfying the relations,

In this paper it is shown that divisibility of a complete lattice ordered (abelian) group is closely related to the existence of a sufficient number of small elements in the positive cone.

We shall denote the set of all real numbers by R which symbol will be reserved for this purpose. All terms used are as defined in Birkhoff(1). For the reader's convenience we now define the two terms most used in the sequel.

We study several questions about the weak-type boundedness of the Fourier transform ℱ on rearrangement invariant spaces. In particular, we characterize the action of ℱ as a bounded operator from the minimal Lorentz space Λ(X) into the Marcinkiewicz maximal space M(X), both associated with a rearrangement invariant space X. Finally, we also prove some results establishing that the weak-type boundedness of ℱ, in certain weighted Lorentz spaces, is equivalent to the corresponding strong-type estimates.

We define several graphs related to the p-blocks of a solvable group. We bound the diameter of these graphs when the defect group associated with the block is either abelian or normal and when the group has odd order. We give examples to show that these bounds are met.

We establish some existence results for a class of critical $N$-Laplacian problems in a bounded domain in $\mathbb {R}^{N}$. In the absence of a suitable direct sum decomposition of the underlying Sobolev space to which the classical linking theorem can be applied, we use an abstract linking theorem based on the $\mathbb {Z}_2$-cohomological index to obtain a non-trivial critical point.

In this paper, we prove the existence of topologically non-trivial solutions of the two-dimensional Adkins–Nappi model of nuclear physics; to this end, we minimize the energy functional by using the classical Skyrme ansatz, as well as a non-radially symmetric generalization of it. In both cases, we show that the minimization procedure preserves the topological degree of the minimization sequence.

Given a finite field of q elements, we consider a trajectory of the map associated with a polynomial ]. Using bounds of character sums, under some mild condition on f, we show that for an appropriate constant C > 0 no N ⩾ Cq½ distinct consecutive elements of such a trajectory are contained in a small subgroup of , improving the trivial lower bound . Using a different technique, we also obtain a similar result for very small values of N. These results are multiplicative analogues of several recently obtained bounds on the length of intervals containing N distinct consecutive elements of such a trajectory.
