Let X be a (real or complex) Banach space, and let K be a linear subspace of its dual X*. Denote by K1 the unit ball in K. If K is not weak-star closed, then the Krein-Šmul'yan theorem says that K1 is not weak-star closed. What, however, is its weak-star closure? Inner and outer extimates were obtained in [3] for the special case where K is a hyperplane. In the present paper we generalise these estimates to arbitrary linear subspaces. For f to belong to w*(K1) it is sufficient to have |φ(f)| ≦ 1 −∥f∥ for all φ in K0 (the annihilator of K in X**) with dist (φ, X)≦1. It is necessary to have |φ(f)| ≦ 1 + ∥f∥ for all such φ. These estimates depend on the action of each φ in K0 separately, which will often make them hard to apply in practice; in both cases, we derive a second estimate, expressed only in terms of certain constants that describe the position of X and K0 in X**.

It is well known that the mean value theorem (MVT) does not, in general, hold for analytic functions. The most familiar example to this effect is f(z) = ez since e2πi−e0≠2πiez0 for any z0∈ℂ. On the other hand, it is easy to show that the MVT holds in ℂ if f(z) is a polynomial of degree at most 2. Thus it is natural to ask what conditions on a function f(z) analytic in a domain D are necessary and sufficient for f(z) to satisfy the MVT in D. This is one of the questions answered in this paper.

A bosonic Laplacian, which is a generalization of Laplacian, is constructed as a second-order conformally invariant differential operator acting on functions taking values in irreducible representations of the special orthogonal group, hence of the spin group. In this paper, we firstly introduce some properties for homogeneous polynomial null solutions to bosonic Laplacians, which give us some important results, such as an orthogonal decomposition of the space of polynomials in terms of homogeneous polynomial null solutions to bosonic Laplacians, etc. This work helps us to introduce Bergman spaces related to bosonic Laplacians, named as bosonic Bergman spaces, in higher spin spaces. Reproducing kernels for bosonic Bergman spaces in the unit ball and a description of bosonic Bergman projection are given as well. At the end, we investigate bosonic Hardy spaces, which are considered as generalizations of harmonic Hardy spaces. Analogs of some well-known results for harmonic Hardy spaces are provided here. For instance, connections to certain complex Borel measure spaces, growth estimates for functions in the bosonic Hardy spaces, etc.

We show that if X is a Banach space of infinite dimension and μh is a Hausdorff measure, where h is continuous, then there exists a measurable set K ⊂ X such that 0<μh(K)< + ∞. We also characterize the normed spaces in which the unit ball can be covered by a sequence of balls whose radii rn < 1 converge to zero as n → ∞.

Let G be one of the following compact simply connected Lie groups: SU(3), Sp(2), G2. In the first two cases there is a well known stable decomposition of G as Q ∨ Sd where d = dim G and Q is a certain subspace of G. For SU(3), Q is the stunted complex quasiprojective space Σ(ℂP2/ℂP1) which fits into a cofibration sequence S3→Q→S5 with stable attaching map η:S5 → S4 For Sp(2), Q is the quaternionic quasi-projective space ℍℚ1 and fits into a cofibration sequence S3→Q→S7 with stable attaching map 2ν:S7→S4 (Here η and ν are generators of respectively.)

This note presents a proof of the following proposition:

Theorem. If Pythagorean orthogonality is homogeneous in a normed linear space T then T is an abstract Euclidean space.

The theorem was originally stated and proved by R. C. James ([1], Theorem 5. 2) who systematically discusses various characterisations of a Euclidean space in terms of concepts of orthogonality. I came across the result independently and the proof which I constructed is a simplified version of that of James. The hypothesis of the theorem may be stated in the form:

Since a normed linear space is known to be Euclidean if the parallelogram law:

is valid throughout the space (see [2]), it is evidently sufficient to show that (l) implies (2).

In the Mathematische Annalen, 11 (1877), 440–444, E. Toeplitz has proved the following theorem: If three quadrics are polar quadrics of three points with respect to a cubic surface, then their (2, 2, 2) invariant vanishes; the invariant being of the second degree in the coefficients of each of the three quadrics.

It is well-known that a general net of quadric surfaces cannot be obtained as the net of polar quadrics of the points of a plane in regard to a cubic surface; in order that it may be so obtained it must have various properties that a general net of quadrics does not have. The locus of the vertices of the cones which belong to the net of quadrics is a curve ϑ –the Jacobian curve of the net of quadrics, and the trisecants of ϑ generate a scroll. Any plane which contains two trisecants of ϑ is a bitangent plane of the scroll and, for a general net of quadrics, there are eighteen of these bitangent planes passing through an arbitrary point. When however the net of quadrics is a net of polar quadrics it is found that any plane which contains two trisecants of ϑ contains two other trisecants also; it thus contains four trisecants in all and counts six times as a bitangent plane of the scroll. The bitangent developable of the scroll, which is, for a general net of quadrics, of class eighteen, degenerates, in the special case when the net of quadrics is a net of polar quadrics, into a developable of class three counted six times; the planes of the developable are therefore the osculating planes of a twisted cubic γ. The plane which, together with a cubic surface, gives rise to the net of polar quadrics must be one of the osculating planes of γ. It is also found, further, that the osculating planes of γ are grouped into pentahedra, the vertices of all these pentahedra lying on ϑ.

For a closed set $E$ contained in the closed unit interval, we show that the big Lipschitz algebra $\varLambda_{\gamma}(E)$ $(0\lt\gamma\lt1)$ is sequentially weak$^{\ast}$ generated by its idempotents if and only if it is weak$^{\ast}$ generated by its idempotents if and only if the little Lipschitz algebra $\lambda_{\gamma}(E)$ is generated by its idempotents, and we describe a class of perfect symmetric sets for which this holds. Moreover, we prove that $\varLambda_1(E)$ is sequentially weak$^{\ast}$ generated by its idempotents if and only if $E$ is of measure zero. Finally, we show that the quotient algebras

of the Beurling algebras need not be weak$^{\ast}$ generated by their idempotents, when $E$ is of measure zero and $\beta\ge\tfrac{1}{2}$.

We obtain a series representation for ζ(s) valid in Res> – k(<0). This representation is obtained by a sequence of regrouping of the series 1–2−s + 3−s–4−s + …( = (1—21−s)ζ(s), Re s > 0). We can obtain asymptotic relations like

as an application of our series representation for ζ(s).

Conditions are given on two maximal monotone (multivalued) operators A and B which ensure that A + B is also maximal. One condition used is that ∥Bx∥≦k(∥x∥)Ax| +d|(A + B)x| + c(∥x∥) for every x∈D(A)⊆D(B), where 0≦k(r)<1, and c(r)≧0 are nondecreasing functions, and 0≦d≦1 is a constant. Here, for a set C, |C| denotes inf{∥y∥:y∈C}. This extends the well known result which has d = 0 (and is used in the proof here). The second part of the paper uses similar hypotheses to give conditions under which the range of the sum, R(A + B), has the same interior and same closure as the sum of the ranges, R(A) + R(B).

A graph G consists, for the purposes of this paper, of two disjoint sets V(G), E(G), whose elements are called vertices and edges respectively of G, together with a relationship whereby with each edge is associated an unordered pair of distinct vertices (called its end-vertices) which the edge is said to join, and whereby no two vertices are joined by more than one edge. An edge γ and vertex ξ are incident if ξ is an end-vertex of γ. A monomorphism [isomorphism] of a graph G into [onto] a graph H is a one-to-one function φ from V(G)∪E(G) into [onto] V(H)∪E(H) such that φ(V(G))⊂V(H), φ(E(G))⊂E(H) and an edge and vertex of G are incident in G if and only if their images under φ are incident in H. G and H are isomorphic (in symbols, G ≅ H) if there exists an isomorphism of G onto H. A subgraph of G is a graph H such that V(H) ⊂ V(G), E(H)⊂E(G) and an edge and vertex of H are incident in H if and only if they are incident in G; if V(H) = V(G), H is a spanning subgraph. A collection of graphs are edge-disjoint if no two of them have an edge in common. A decomposition of G is a set of edge-disjoint subgraphs of G which between them include all the edges and vertices of G. Ln is a graph whose vertices are the lattice points of n-dimensional Euclidean space, two vertices A and B being joined by an edge if and only if AB is of unit length (and therefore necessarily parallel to one of the co-ordinate axes). An endless Hamiltonian line of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G which is isomorphic to L1. The object of this paper is to prove that Ln is decomposable into n endless Hamiltonian lines, a result previously established (1) for the case where n is a power of 2.

Let ${\overline{p}}(n)$ denote the overpartition function. In this paper, we study the asymptotic higher-order log-concavity property of the overpartition function in a similar framework done by Hou and Zhang for the partition function. This will enable us to move on further in order to prove log-concavity of overpartitions, explicitly by studying the asymptotic expansion of the quotient ${\overline{p}}(n-1){\overline{p}}(n+1)/{\overline{p}}(n)^2$ up to a certain order. This enables us to additionally prove 2-log-concavity and higher Turán inequalities with a unified approach.

Vajda's paper in this volume has suggested to the author the following problem:

Let A be a n × m matrix, m≦ n, let B be a m × n matrix, and let M = I – AB, where I is the unit matrix of order n. Given A, to find B such that of the n latent roots of M′M, k are unity, and the remaining n — k are zero.

The effect of imposing a certain finiteness condition on the group of central automorphisms of a finite-by-nilpotent group is investigated. In particular it is shown that, if each central automorphism of a finite-by-nilpotent group G has finite order, then the factor group G/Z(G) has finite exponent.

For each finite real reflection group W, we identify a copy of the type-W simplicial generalized associahedron inside the corresponding simplicial permutahedron. This defines a bijection between the facets of the generalized associahedron and the elements of the type-W non-crossing partition lattice that is more tractable than previous such bijections. We show that the simplicial fan determined by this associahedron coincides with the Cambrian fan for W.

A study of nonselfadjoint algebras of Hilbert space operators was begun by considering special types of such algebras, namely those determined by a commuting family of rank one operators. A first step in this direction was made by Erdos in [1] and is continued more extensively in [2].

In this paper it is shown that divisibility of a complete lattice ordered (abelian) group is closely related to the existence of a sufficient number of small elements in the positive cone.

We shall denote the set of all real numbers by R which symbol will be reserved for this purpose. All terms used are as defined in Birkhoff(1). For the reader's convenience we now define the two terms most used in the sequel.

The conception of the integral of one function with respect to another was introduced by Stieltjes in his classical memoir on continued fractions. He denned the integral as

and gave the formula for integration by parts.

In a recent paper I discussed, for a given series Σan the relation between the conditions

where 0 < ρ < 1 and p is a positive integer. It was there proved (Theorem 14) that (2) implies (1) but that the converse is not necessarily true. My object in this note is to render more precise the connection between (1) and (2) by showing that (2) is equivalent to (1′), where (1′) is (1) with the additional restriction that Σn−1wn is convergent. The proof of this equivalence relation is based on a technique which was introduced and developed by Andersen and is similar to the proofs in my former paper. The note concludes with a brief discussion of the corresponding results for the case ρ = 1.
