In this paper we investigate the nature of family of pairs of separable Banach spaces (X, Y) such that $\mathcal{K}(X,Y)$ is complemented in $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. It is proved that the family of pairs (X,Y) of separable Banach spaces such that $\mathcal{K}(X,Y)$ is complemented in $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ is not Borel, endowed with the Effros–Borel structure.

The first formula to be proved is

The object of this paper is to find the solutions of some dual equations involving the inverses of certain Mellin type transforms that were first introduced by D. Naylor in his paper [1]. Because these transforms are relatively unknown we shall begin by defining them and making a note of some of their properties. The main result is contained in the following theorem.

The concept of a Hilbert module (over an H*-algebra) arises as a generalization of that of a complex Hilbert space when the complex field is replaced by an (associative) H*-algebra with zero annihilator. P. P. Saworotnow [13] introduced Hilbert modules and extended to its context some classical theorems from the theory of Hilbert spaces, J. F. Smith [17] gave a complete structure theory for Hilbert modules, and G. R. Giellis [9] obtained a nice characteristization of Hilbert modules.

Bai [1] gave an intrinsic integral inequality for compact minimal submanifolds of constant curvature Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we extend Bai's result to the case of pseudo-umbilical submanifolds.

Suppose C is a bounded chain complex of finitely generated free modules over the Laurent polynomial ring L = R[x,x−1]. Then C is R-finitely dominated, i.e. homotopy equivalent over R to a bounded chain complex of finitely generated projective R-modules if and only if the two chain complexes C ⊗LR((x)) and C ⊗LR((x−1)) are acyclic, as has been proved by Ranicki (A. Ranicki, Finite domination and Novikov rings, Topology34(3) (1995), 619–632). Here R((x)) = R[[x]][x−1] and R((x−1)) = R[[x−1]][x] are rings of the formal Laurent series, also known as Novikov rings. In this paper, we prove a generalisation of this criterion which allows us to detect finite domination of bounded below chain complexes of projective modules over Laurent rings in several indeterminates.

In this paper, we establish an extended Loomis–Whitney inequality for positive double John bases, which generalises Ball's result [1]. Moreover, a different extension of the Loomis–Whitney inequality is deduced.

Let the group G = AB be the product of two subgroups A and B. A normal subgroup K of G is said to be factorized if K = (A ∩ K)(B ∩ K) and A ∩ B ≤ K, and this is well-known to be equivalent to the fact that K = AK ∩ BK (see [1]). Easy examples show that normal subgroups of a product of two groups need not, in general, be factorized. Therefore the determination of certain special factorized subgroups is of relevant interest in the investigation concerning the structure of a factorized group. In this direction E. Pennington [5] proved that the Fitting subgroup of a finite product of two nilpotent groups is factorized. This result was extended to infinite groups by B. Amberg and theauthors, who provedin [2] that if the soluble group G = AB with finite abelian section rank isthe product of two locally nilpotent subgroups A and B, then the Hirsch-Plotkin radical (i.e. the maximum locally nilpotent normal subgroup) of G is factorized. If G is a soluble ℒI group and the factors A and B are nilpotent, it was shown in [3] that also the Fitting subgroup of G is factorized. However, Pennington's theorem becomes false for finite soluble groups which are the productof two arbitrary subgroups. For instance, the symmetric group of degree 4 is the product of a subgroup isomorphic with the symmetric group of degree 3 and a cyclic subgroup of order 4, but its Fitting subgroup is not factorized.

If the group G=AB is the product of two abelian subgroups A and B, then G is metabelian by a well-known result of Itô [8], so that the commutator subgroup G' of G is abelian. In the following we are concerned with the following condition:

There exists a normal subgroup

which is contained in A or B.

Recently, Holt and Howlett in [7] have given an example of a countably infinite p-group G = AB, which is the product of two elementary abelian subgroups A and B with Core(A) = Core (B) = 1, so that in this group (*) does not hold. Also, Sysak in [13] gives an example of a product G = AB of two free abelian subgroups A and B with Core(A)=Core(B)=l.

Let $m, n\in\Bbb N$, $V$ be a $2m$-dimensional complex vector space. The irreducible representations of the Brauer's centralizer algebra $B_n(-2m)$ appearing in $V^{\otimes{n}}$ are in 1–1 correspondence to the set of pairs $(\,f,\lamda)$, where $f\in\Z$ with $0\leq f\leq [n/2]$, $and$ $\lam\vdash n-2f$ satisfying $\lam_1\leq m$. In this paper, we first show that each of these representations has a basis consists of eigenvectors for the subalgebra of $B_n(-2m)$ generated by all the Jucys-Murphy operators, and we determine the corresponding eigenvalues. Then we identify these representations with the irreducible representations constructed from a cellular basis of $B_n(-2m)$. Finally, an explicit description of the action of each generator of $B_n(-2m)$ on such a basis is also given, which generalizes earlier work of [15] for Brauer's centralizer algebra $B_n(m)$.

Let G be a group and let ℓ(G) be the set of all conjugacy classes [H] of subgroups H of G, where a partial order ≤ is defined by [H1] ≤ [H2] if and only if H1, is contained in some conjugate of H2.

A number of papers (see for example [1] and the references mentioned there) deal with the question of characterizing groups G by the poset ℓ(G). For example, in [1] it was shown that if ℓ(G) and ℓ(H) are order-isomorphic and G is a noncyclic p-group then |G| = |H|. Moreover, if G is abelian, then G = H, and if G is metacyclic then H is metacyclic.

Let μ be an isomorphism which maps a subgroup A of the group G onto a second subgroup B (not necessarily distinct from A) of G; then μ is called a partial automorphism of G. If A coincides with G, that is if the isomorphism is defined on the whole of G, we speak of a total automorphism; this is what is usually called an automorphism of G. A partial (or total) automorphism μ,* extends or continues a partial automorphism μ if μ* is defined for, at least, all those elements for which μ is defined, and moreover μ* coincides with μ where μ is defined.

Ogasawara and Yoshinaga [9] have shown that a B*-algebra is weakly completely continuous (w.c.c.) if and only if it is *-isomorphic to the B*(∞)-sum of algebras LC(HX), where each LC(HX)is the algebra of all compact linear operators on the Hilbert space Hx. As Kaplansky [5] has shown that a B*-algebra is B*-isomorphic to the B*(∞)-sum of algebras LC(HX) if and only if it is dual, it follows that a 5*-algebra A is w.c.c. if and only if it is dual. We have observed that, if only certain key elements of a B*-algebra A are w.c.c, then A is already dual. This observation constitutes our main theorem which goes as follows. A B*-algebra A is dual if and only if for every maximal modular left ideal M there exists a right identity modulo M that is w.c.c.

In [1] J. Lindenstrauss and M. A. Perles studied the extreme points of the set of all linear operators T of norm ≤ 1 from a finite dimensional Banach space X into itself. In particular they studied the question “When do these extreme points form a semigroup?”.

It is shown in [2] that a uqu space satisfies the following conditions.

(DC) There is no infinite, strictly decreasing sequence of open sets with open intersection.

(IC) There is no infinite, strictly increasing sequence of open sets.

In this note we show that for a transitive space these conditions are sufficient for the space to be uqu. This will follow as a consequence of the following result.

In this note, we compute the centers of the categories of tilting modules for G = SL2 in prime characteristic, of tilting modules for the corresponding quantum group at a complex root of unity, and of projective GgT-modules when g = 1, 2.

For algebraic terms which are not defined, one may consult [2]. The symbol S(X) denotes the semigroup, under composition, of all continuous selfmaps of the topological space X. When X is discrete, S(X) is simply the full transformation semigroup on the set X. It has long been known that Green's relations and ℐ coincide for [2, p. 52] and F. A. Cezus has shown in his doctoral dissertation [1, p. 34] that and ℐ also coincide for S(X) when X is the one-point compactification of the countably infinite discrete space. Our main purpose here is to point out the fact that among the 0-dimensional metric spaces, Cezus discovered the only nondiscrete space X with the property that and ℐ coincide on the semigroup S(X). Because of a result in a previous paper [6] by S. Subbiah and the author, this property (for 0-dimensional metric spaces) is in turn equivalent to the semigroup being regular. We gather all this together in the following

In this note, we give an elementary procedure for constructing n-root closed integral domains. We then use this construction to give two interesting examples. First, we give an example of a root closed integral domain which is not quasinormal. Secondly, we show that for any subset 5 of odd positive primes there is a one-dimensional affine domain which is p-root closed for a prime p if and only if p ∈ S.

In this paper, we construct a generalized degree theory of Browder-Petryshyn or Petryshyn type for a class of semilinear operator equations involving a Fredholm type mapping with infinite dimensional kernel.
