We extend the classical notion of standardly stratified k-algebra (stated for finite dimensional k-algebras) to the more general class of rings, possibly without 1, with enough idempotents. We show that many of the fundamental results, which are known for classical standardly stratified algebras, can be generalized to this context. Furthermore, new classes of rings appear as: ideally standardly stratified and ideally quasi-hereditary. In the classical theory, it is known that quasi-hereditary and ideally quasi-hereditary algebras are equivalent notions, but in our general setting, this is no longer true. To develop the theory, we use the well-known connection between rings with enough idempotents and skeletally small categories (ringoids or rings with several objects).

In this paper, we study an upper bound of the fractal dimension of the exponential attractor for the chemotaxis–growth system in a two-dimensional domain. We apply the technique given by Eden, Foias, Nicolaenko and Temam. Our results show that the bound is estimated by polynomial order with respect to the chemotactic coefficient in the equation similar to our preceding papers.

This paper investigates finite p-groups, p \geq 5, in which every cyclic subgroup has defect at most two. This class of groups is often denoted by {\cal U}_{2,1}. The main result is a theorem which characterises these groups by identifying a family of groups in {\cal U}_{2,1}, and showing that any finite p-group in {\cal U}_{2,1}, with p \geq 5, must be a homomorphic image of one of these groups.

In [3], a group G was said to be a CF-group if, for every subgroup H of G, H/CoreGH is finite. It was shown there that a locally finite CF-group G is abelian-by-finite and that there is a bound for the indices |H: CoreGH| as H runs through all subgroups of G. (Groups for which such a bound exists were referred to in [3] as BCF-groups.) The CF-property was further investigated in [10], one of the main results there being that nilpotent CF-groups are (again) abelian-by-finite and BCF. In the present paper, we shall discuss the CF-property in conjunction with some related properties, which are defined as follows.

Let T be a dominant operator that is a quasi-affine transform of an M-hyponormal operator. In this paper we show that if f is a function analytic on a neighborhood of the spectrum of T, then Weyl's theorem holds for f(T{\hskip1}).

Let $A$ be a locally finite, N-graded, noetherian algebra with a balanced dualizing complex. If $A$ is a Hopf algebra, then $A$ has finite injective dimension.

We show that an action of a group on a set X is locally finite if and only if X is not equidecomposable with a proper subset of itself. As a consequence, a group is locally finite if and only if its uniform Roe algebra is finite.

The importance of the fundamental group of a graph in group theory has been well known for many years. The recent work of Meakin, Margolis and Stephen has shown how effective graph theoretic techniques can be in the study of word problems in inverse semigroups. Our goal here is to characterize those deterministic inverse word graphs that are Schutzenberger graphs and consider how deterministic inverse word graphs and Schutzenberger graphs can be constructed from subgroups of free groups.

We show that the $\mathbb{Z}$/2-equivariant nth integral Morava K-theory with reality is self-dual with respect to equivariant Anderson duality. In particular, there is a universal coefficients exact sequence in integral Morava K-theory with reality, and we recover the self-duality of the spectrum KO as a corollary. The study of $\mathbb{Z}$/2-equivariant Anderson duality made in this paper gives a nice interpretation of some symmetries of RO($\mathbb{Z}$/2)-graded (i.e. bigraded) equivariant cohomology groups in terms of Mackey functor duality.

Pointing out the difference between the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the classical power law nonlinearity – for which solutions exist globally, independently of the sign and the degree of the nonlinearity, the size of the initial data and the dimension of the lattice – we prove either global existence or nonexistence, in time, for the Discrete Klein-Gordon equation with the same type of nonlinearity (but of “blow-up” sign), under suitable conditions on the initial data, and sometimes on the dimension of the lattice. The results consider both the conservative and the linearly damped lattice. Similarities and differences with the continuous counterparts are remarked. We also make a short comment on the existence of excitation thresholds, for forced solutions of damped and parametrically driven Klein-Gordon lattices.

By a quasi-permutation matrix we mean a square matrix over the complex field [Copf ] with non-negative integral trace. Thus every permutation matrix over [Copf ] is a quasi-permutation matrix. For a given finite group G, let p(G) denote the minimal degree of a faithful permutation representation of G (or a faithful representation of G by permutation matrices), let q(G) denote the minimal degree of a faithful representation of G by quasi-permutation matrices over the rational field ℚ, and let c(G) be the minimal degree of a faithful representation of G by complex quasi-permutation matrices. See [1].

In an important recent paper [4], G. A. Elliott has given a necessary and sufficient condition for every derivation on a separable C*-algebra with identity to be inner. Indeed, Elliott's condition has since been shown, by Akemann and Pedersen, to be equivalent to the C*-algebra being a finite direct sum of C*-algebras which are either homogeneous of finite degree or simple [8, Corollary 3.10].

The similarities between martingale convergence theory and pointwise ergodic theory are now well known [5, 7, 9, 10]. In [5] the similarity between the proofs of the Hopf– Dunford–Schwartz individual ergodic theorem and the martingale convergence theorem is systematically exploited to produce very general ” maximal ergodic ” inequalities for certain sequences of contractions on L1-spaces. A different approach by Rota [10] and Rao [9] leads to a unified convergence theory for martingales and Abel limits. Bishop [1] has produced ” upcrossing” inequalities which yield both theChacon-Ornstein theorem [4] and the martingale convergence theorem.

Let Sg be a closed orientable surface of genus g ≥ 2 and C a simple closed nonseparating curve in F. Let tC denote a left-handed Dehn twist about C. A fractional power of tC of exponent ℓ//n is an h ∈ Mod(Sg) such that hn = tCℓ. Unlike a root of a tC, a fractional power h can exchange the sides of C. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of both side-exchanging and side-preserving fractional powers. We show in the side-preserving case that if gcd(ℓ,n) = 1, then h will be isotopic to the ℓth power of an nth root of tC and that n ≤ 2g+1. In general, we show that n ≤ 4g, and that side-preserving fractional powers of exponents 2g//2g+2 and 2g//4g always exist. For a side-exchanging fractional power of exponent ℓ//2n, we show that 2n ≥ 2g+2, and that side-exchanging fractional powers of exponent 2g+2//4g+2 and 4g+1//4g+2 always exist. We give a complete listing of certain side-preserving and side-exchanging fractional powers on S5.

By applying the Sears non-terminating transformations, we establish four general transformation theorems for double basic hypergeometric series of type Φ2:1;λ2:0;μ. Moreover, several transformation, reduction and summation formulae on the double basic hypergeometric series Φ2:1;22:0;1, Φ2:1;32:0;2 and Φ2:1;42:0;3 are also derived through parameter specialisation.

Let μ be a homomorphic mapping of some subgroup A of the group G onto a subgroup Ḃ (not necessarily distinct from A) of G; then we call μ a partial endomorphism of G. If A coincides with G, that is, if the homomorphism is defined on the whole of G, we speak of a total endomorphism; this is what is usually called an endomorphism of G. A partial (or total) endomorphism μ*extends or continues a partial endomorphism μ if the domain of μ* contains the domain of μ, that is, μ* is defined for (at least) all those elements for which μ. is defined, and moreover μ* coincides with μ where μ is defined.

In a recent paper we presented a truncation-type method of deriving Bäcklund transformations for ordinary differential equations. This method is based on a consideration of truncation as a mapping that preserves the locations of a natural subset of the movable poles that the equation possesses. Here we apply this approach to the third and fifth Painlevé equations. For the third Painlevé equation we are able to obtain all fundamental Bäcklund transformations for the case where the parameters satisfy \gamma \delta \neq 0. For the fifth Painlevé equation our approach yields what appears to be all known Bäcklund transformations.

Let X be a bordered Klein surface, by which we mean a Klein surface with non-empty boundary. X is characterized topologically by its orientability, the number k of its boundary components and the genus p of the closed surface obtained by filling in all the holes. The algebraic genus g of X is defined by

If g≥2 it is known that if G is a group of automorphisms of X then |G|≤12(g-l) and that the upper bound is attained for infinitely many values of g ([4], [5]). A bordered Klein surface for which this upper bound is attained is said to have maximal symmetry. A group of 12(g-l) automorphisms of a bordered Klein surface of algebraic genus g is called an M*-group and it is known that a finite group G is an M*-group if and only if it is generated by 3 non-trivial elements T1, T2, T3 which obey the relations

([4]).

Brian Hartley asked me whether a free (nilpotent of class 2 and exponent p2)-group of countable rank has a faithful linear representation of finite degree, p here being a prime of course. The answer is yes. The point is that this then yields via work of F. Leinen and M. J. Tomkinson, see [3,3.6] an image of a linear p-group, which is not even finitary linear. The question of which relatively free groups have faithful linear representations dates back at least to work of W. Magnus in the 1930's, see [4, pp. 33, 34 and the final comment on p. 40] for a discussion of this. Our construction, which works more generally, is a further contribution. We write ℜc for the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most c and (ℭ9 for the variety of groups of exponent dividing q.
