Introduction. Les variations phénotypiques et la multiplicité des dénominations des variétés marocaines de figuiers rendent confuse l’identification variétale des accessions de Ficus carica L. Matériels et méthodes. Quinze accessions présentes en collection dans la région de Meknès correspondant à cinq dénominations différentes ont été caractérisées en combinant deux approches : pomologique et moléculaire (SSR et ISSR). Résultats. Les résultats obtenus ont permis d’identifier des accessions distinctes et des redondances au sein de chacune des cinq dénominations. Conclusion. La complémentarité des deux approches se révèle utile pour l’établissement d’une collection de référence.

Introduction. L'apparition de la cercosporiose due à Phaeoramularia angolensis en 1993 en Guinée constitue de nos jours l'un des facteurs limitants de la culture des agrumes dans ce pays. Le manque de connaissance sur la sensibilité, vis-à-vis du pathogène, des espèces ou variétés d'agrumes présentes localement freine la relance projetée pour cette culture. Face à cet enjeu, des études sur la sensibilité in situ et des essais de contrôle chimique de la maladie ont été entrepris. Matériel et méthodes. Des agrumes en collections et en plantations villageoises ont été suivis de 1995 à 1999 dans les principales régions productrices d'agrumes de Guinée afin d'évaluer la sensibilité à Phaeoramularia angolensis d'une soixantaine de variétés. En complément, un essai de lutte chimique a été mené en 1999 afin de définir les doses et fréquences de traitements à recommander aux planteurs pour contrôler la maladie. Le taux d'organes atteints et les pertes de production dues au pathogène ont été évalués. Résultats et discussion. Les sensibilités ont varié suivant les sites mais surtout en fonction des espèces et de leurs variétés. Presque tous les orangers et tous les tangelos et pomelos se sont montrés sensibles à très sensibles à la maladie avec des taux de dépréciations de l'ensemble de la production (feuilles et fruits) souvent supérieurs à 30 %. Les taux de sensibilité des mandariniers ont été plus contrastés avec des variétés tolérantes (Ponkan) à très sensibles (Hansen). Les tangors, citronniers, limettiers, kumquats et pamplemoussiers se sont révélés tolérants dans tous les sites à la seule exception du limettier Tahiti et du citronnier Meyer au-dessus de 800 m d'altitude. Lors de l'essai de lutte chimique, la dose de 100 g de matière active $\cdot$ 100 L-1 d'eau appliquée tous les 10 j a permis d'élever en moyenne à près de 90 % le taux de fruits potentiellement commercialisables. Par ailleurs, la rentabilité des vergers a décru rapidement dès que le taux d'attaques des fruits a été supérieur à 20 %. Conclusion. Nos résultats montrent que de nouvelles recherches entreprises dans le contexte actuel de l'agrumiculture guinéenne pourraient permettre de répondre aux problèmes de stratégies de lutte à adopter, de produits, doses ou périodes à recommander et de variétés à promouvoir dans le pays.

Introduction. Bacterial canker,caused by P. syringae pv. syringae,is an important disease of stone fruit worldwide. The possibilityof P. syringae pv. syringae infectionthrough leaf scars and lenticels was evaluated in cherry, peachand prune. Materials and methods. Laboratory and fieldinoculations were performed using cherry, peach and prune stemsto evaluate leaf scar age, chilling and freezing-thawing on bacterialinfection through leaf scars and lenticels. Results and discussion. Increasingleaf scar age was associated with significant decreases in diseaseincidence and length of lesions resulting from leaf scar inoculationwith Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae incherry, peach and prune. A significant reduction in incidence andlesion length was observed after 4 h of air exposure, and both measuresof infection were reduced to essentially 0 by 2 days of exposure. Prolongedchilling temperature (2.2 °C) prior to leaf removal had no cleareffect on disease incidence of leaf scar infection, but significantlydecreased lesion length due to leaf scar infection. Cherry was more susceptibleto P. syringae pv. syringae infectionthrough leaf scars than peach and ‘French’ prune. The leaf scar inoculationresults were consistent with the previous studies. The disease incidenceof lenticel infection caused by bacterial inoculation in ‘French’prune was very low, but significantly higher than the water control.Freezing-thawing significantly increased both the disease incidence andthe lesion size via lenticel infection. The lenticel inoculationdata suggest that P. syringae pv. syringae infection throughlenticels is possible under field conditions.

Introduction. The traditional curing of vanilla pods includes “killing” and sweating steps when pods are exposed to heat (35–65 ℃) for various lengths of time. Although it is known that liberation of vanillin and other phenolics from their non-aromatic glucosides is due to the action of an endogenous β-glucosidase, its in vivo kinetics remained unknown. Materials and methods. Mature green vanilla pods were pretreated for 2 h at 50 ℃, 55 ℃ and 60 ℃, then stored for 118 days at 27 ℃. Phenolic glucosides and their aglycons were extracted at regular intervals during the storage period and analyzed by HPLC. Results and discussion. All phenolic β-glucosides were slowly hydrolyzed during the storage period with production of vanillin, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillic acid, and other unknown aglycons. Most of the β-glucosidase was heat-denatured by the pretreatment, and analysis of its kinetic parameters showed that it adopts, in vivo, an allosteric mode of functioning with a lower affinity for glucovanillin than in vitro, where it behaves as a Michaelian enzyme. Conclusion. Extensive research is needed to confirm the allosteric mechanism of the vanilla β-glucosidase in vivo.

Introduction. Various whitefly species attack sweet oranges in Nigeria. The economic importance of these whiteflies varies from one area to another depending on prevailing environmental conditions. Trials were established to assess the relative susceptibility of sweet orange varieties to woolly whitefly Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) attack, its population dynamics and the impact of its entomopathogenic fungi Aschersonia spp.in population management. Materials and methods. Four sweet orange varieties were used for the trials: Agege, Bende, Pineapple and Valencia. The population dynamics of A. floccosus and its fungi-colonised nymphs were monitored in 2006 and 2007 by sampling 24 leaves per tree at 14-day intervals. Average monthly precipitation, relative humidity and temperature were collated for the period of our study. Results and discussion. No significant difference was observed among the populations of A. floccosus nymphs or the level of nymphal infection by Aschersonia spp. in the sweet orange varieties. Higher numbers of woolly whitefly eggs and adults were observed on the Agege and Bende varieties in 2006 and 2007, but the results were only significantly different in 2007. In both years, the populations of eggs, nymphs and adults of A. floccosus and its entomopathogenic fungi Aschersonia spp. were relatively high in the dry season months of January to March, dropped during the rainy seasons and rose again from October. Evaluation of Aschersonia spp impact showed active colonisation of whiteflies. Generally, our results showed that weather factors such as rainfall and relative humidity negatively influenced the woolly whitefly population. Conclusion. The association between the woolly whitefly population and fungi was beneficial and suggests that Aschersonia spp. could be considered as a potential biological control agent for A. floccosus

La pitaya (Hylocereus sp.) en culture de diversification à l'île de la Réunion : stratégie d'accompagnement de son développement.Résumé – Le patrimoine fruitier de l'île de la Réunion. Parmi les quelques 138 espèces fruitières qui composent le patrimoine fruitier de l'île de la Réunion, seules quelques-unes d'entre-elles sont véritablement cultivées. Pourtant, certaines autres pourraient séduire les consommateurs avides de nouveauté. Critères de présélection pour une culture de diversification. Face à ce constat, une présélection a été réalisée afin d'identifier des espèces fruitières nouvelles, candidates à la diversification pour l'île de la Réunion ; les critères de choix ont été : l'attractivité du fruit, sa commodité à être consommé, son goût, l'aptitude à sa conservation, la rentabilité de l'espèce, etc. La pitaya (Hylocereus sp.) a alors été retenue. Ce choix a ensuite été validé par une enquête auprès de consommateurs réunionnais. Développement de la pitaya à l'île de la Réunion. Le développement de cette nouvelle culture a été réalisé en trois étapes : identification des contraintes agronomiques liées à l'intensification de cette culture et recherche de solutions ; acquisition des techniques culturales de base et sensibilisation du grand public ; prise en compte des contraintes des agriculteurs et accompagnement commercial du nouveau produit. Conclusions. Les qualités commerciales de la pitaya (couleur et forme attrayantes), l'enthousiasme des consommateurs et la motivation des agriculteurs envers cette nouvelle espèce font de H. sp. une véritable opportunité de diversification pour l'île de la Réunion alors que, il y a 7 ans, le fruit de cette espèce était totalement inconnu sur l'île.

Introduction. Du fait des conditionstropicales humides, le contrôle des adventices est un poste importantet permanent dans les dépenses d’un producteur de fruits aux Antilles.La pratique du désherbage chimique est à ce jour la plus économique,mais l’utilisation récurrente d’herbicides dans les vergers de laMartinique conduit à une érosion des sols et à une pollution des eaux.Pour pallier l’usage d’herbicides, nous avons testé l’associationde volailles à un verger productif afin d’en contrôler l’enherbement. Matériel et méthodes. Le dispositif a été installé surune parcelle de 700 m2 subdivisée en sept placettes de 100 m2. Deux placettes ont constitué les traitements témoins ;elles ont été fauchées à la débroussailleuse. Chacune des cinq autresplacettes a été soumise au pâturage de 5 oies pendant une semaine, puisau pâturage de 20 poulets pendant la semaine suivante, puis laisséesans volailles pendant trois autres semaines. Trois cycles de tellesrotations ont été observés. La production de biomasse par groupebotanique (poacées, cypéracées et autres) dans les placettes expérimentales aété mesurée chaque semaine pendant les trois cycles (4 mois). Unefois par mois l’indice de recouvrement par groupe botanique a étérelevé. Résultats. La biomasse totale de la strateherbacée a diminué sur les placettes pâturées, ce qui a permis lecontrôle biologique des adventices pendant quatre mois. La diversitéfloristique a diminué à cause de la sélection opérée par les volailles pourleur alimentation et le couvert s’est homogénéisé par l’augmentationdu pourcentage de la biomasse des cypéracées dans la biomasse totale.Cette famille peu appétible pour les volailles s’est ainsi étenduesur toutes les placettes pâturées. Discussion. Le pâturagedes volailles, des oies en particulier, s’est révélé être une méthodeefficace pour la maîtrise de l’enherbement en verger. Cependant, dansle cas d’une forte proportion d’espèces non appétibles dans la strateherbacée, d’autres méthodes de désherbage devront être combinées.L’installation d’une couverture herbacée composée d’un mélange deplantes de couverture adaptées à l’association verger et volaillesainsi qu’une meilleure gestion de la rotation des animaux devrontêtre envisagées pour optimiser cette technique.

Introduction. L’hétérogénéité de maturité des récoltes d’abricots résulte de la difficulté d’évaluer objectivement le stade optimal de récolte et donc la variabilité du stade de développement des fruits au moment de la cueillette. Cette hétérogénéité pose un problème lorsqu’il s’agit de comparer des récoltes, des variétés, des parcours techniques, etc. Trois protocoles d’échantillonnage ont été testés comme préalables à la caractérisation du stade physiologique de lots d’abricots par des méthodes physiques destructives ou non. Le but recherché a été, hormis la réduction du nombre et du coût des analyses, l’obtention de lots homogènes représentatifs de la récolte et de son hétérogénéité, et la constitution de lots comparables. Matériel et méthodes. L’échantillonnage a été effectué sur la base de mesures de compression (pression) à un taux ne lésant pas ou peu le fruit. La sélection des lots a été réalisée après traitement statistique (analyse descriptive, partitionnement univarié) des valeurs de pression. La démarche a été appliquée (a) à la comparaison du développement d’un abricot hybride au cours de 2 années aux climats très contrastés (normal et caniculaire), (b) à la mise en évidence de l’effet des parcours techniques sur quelques propriétés physiques des fruits provenant de sept abricotiers hybrides et (c) au suivi de l’évolution en postrécolte d’un clone. Les paramètres retenus ont été la fermeté, les couleurs et les densités du fruit et de la chair. Résultats et discussion. La sélection d’un lot médian a permis de différencier les récoltes et d’identifier les caractéristiques affectées par le climat : coloration externe, couleur et densité de la chair. L’allotement en classes de fermeté s’est avéré efficace pour la mise en évidence de l’hétérogénéité des récoltes et pour comparer les propriétés physiques d’hybrides différents. La constitution de lots présentant des variabilités comparables en fermeté s’est montrée adaptée au suivi postrécolte des fruits, ainsi qu’à la mise en évidence de l’influence de mesures physiques non destructives répétées sur un même lot sur l’évolution des abricots en postrécolte.

Introduction. After harvest, litchi fruits (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) rapidly lose their bright red skin color. Peel browning of harvested litchi fruit has largely been attributed to rapid degradation of red anthocyanin pigments associated with the oxidation of phenolic compounds by polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and/or peroxidase (POD). An anthocyanase has been also identified in litchi peel. Our work aimed at characterizing two specific litchi varieties that differ greatly in their color and browning behavior. Materials and methods. The anthocyanins, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD) and anthocyanase in the pericarp of two litchi cultivars, Kwai May and Wai Chee, grown in Reunion Island and Spain, respectively, were studied. Results and discussion. The qualitative composition of major anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-glucoside) was identical for the two cultivars studied, but, quantitatively, the variety Kwai May had a lower concentration than Wai Chee (64% less) of cyanidin-3-rutinoside. This component represented more than 90% of total anthocyanins in both cultivars. The activity of PPO was 6 times greater in the variety Kwai May than in Wai Chee and the activity of POD 30 times greater. The activity of POD was greater than that of PPO in both varieties. These differences help to explain the different behaviors of the cultivars during subsequent postharvest studies.

Introduction. This protocol describes the production of haploid and dihaploid plants from in vitro anther cultures of M. balbisiana. The principle, key advantages, starting plant material, time required and expected results are presented. Materials and methods. This part describes the required laboratory materials, medium preparation, anther isolation and culture. Results. White, creamy calli emerge from anthers about (6 to 15) weeks after the beginning of the culture.

Introduction. Their physical and chemical properties make sandy tin tailings unsuitable for agricultural purposes without proper fertilizer and crop management practices. An attempt was made to use these tailings for sustainable production of pineapple using fertilization and irrigation techniques. Therefore, the objective of the study was to determine the effect of ground sucker size and levels of fertilizer used on yield and nutrient accumulation in plant components of pineapple cv. Josapine grown on sandy tin tailings. Materials and methods. Three fertilizer levels (plot 1, plot 2 and plot 3) containing N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Cu in solution and three classes of ground suckers (> 70 cm, 70–40 cm and < 70 cm) were used. They were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. There were 32 plants in each experimental plot. Each plot received a similar quantity of Fe, B, Mn, Zn and Mo. At harvest, each plant’s parts were divided into fruit, leaves, stem and roots. The dry matter yield and nutrient contents of each pineapple part were analyzed and recorded. Results and discussion. The highest and the lowest amounts of dry matter were 397 g·plant–1 (size > 70 cm) and 96 g·plant–1 (size < 70 cm), respectively. Total dry matter accumulation was greater (26%) for plot 1 than for plots 2 and 3. Substantial amounts of the dry matter accumulation occurred in leaves (45.0%) and fruit (34.0%) and less in stems (16.0%) and roots (5%). A similar pattern was also observed for the total (major and micro-) nutrient accumulation in the plant components. Besides the fruit parameters, the length of the pineapple stem is an important factor affecting the yield of pineapple, either expressed on a fresh (R2 = 0.904***) or dry (R2 = 0.855***) weight basis. Conclusion. Ground sucker size is a very important factor for successful production of a high fruit yield and quality of pineapple planted on sandy tin tailings.

Introduction. In saline soils, the water absorption process of the plants is negatively affected, due to the permeability of the roots, leading to hydric stress. Plants under saline stress close their stomas earlier than plants not in these conditions; this causes an increase in stomatal resistance due to the decrease in water potential. The aim of the present research was to detect alterations in the stomatic behaviour and leaf water potential in young plants of Annona squamosa submitted to saline stress. Materials and methods. Sixty-day-old seedlings of A. squamosa were acclimated for 15 days in a greenhouse, before being submitted to different saline treatments. Five treatments (T0 = 0 mM; T1 = 25 mM; T2 = 50 mM; T3 = 75 mM and T4 = 100 mM of NaCl in a nutritive solution) were applied with six replications. The evaluations of the stomatic response occurred on the 20th, 30th, 40th, 60th, 80th and 90th days after the beginning of the saline treatments. The transpiration measures, diffusive resistance and leaf temperature were registered in the first mature leaf. The photosynthetically active radiation, relative humidity and air temperature within the greenhouse were simultaneously assessed 60 and 90 days after the beginning of treatments; then the leaf water potential (Rleaf) was also measured. Results. During the time of the experiment the leaf temperature and its difference from the air temperature was not affected by NaCl levels, but only 90 days after the beginning of the treatments the values observed in the control plants were lower than those observed in the 25 mM treatment. The diffusive resistance after 40 days was increased in all NaCl treatments. The transpiration, independent of treatment, was reduced by 44.1% (at 60 days) and 13.4% (at 90 days) with the 100-mM treatment compared with the control treatment. The increment in NaCl induced a decrease in Rleaf in all treatments, but an equal reduction was observed for each treatment after 60 and 90 days. Conclusion. The NaCl levels affected the transpiration and leaf water potential; however, the leaf water potential showed an equal reduction in all treatments on the 60th and 90th days.

Introduction. Pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest, la Guinée a un climat tropical et un relief accidenté, avec un réseau hydrographique important. Elle présente quatre régions naturelles dans lesquelles se développent spontanément plusieurs espèces fruitières dont les fruits sont actuellement consommés et vendus dans les marchés nationaux. Afin de mieux exploiter ces produits, des enquêtes ont cherché à constituer une base de données fiables identifiant les espèces fruitières impliquées, leurs zones et leurs périodes de production, le circuit de commercialisation des produits, leurs techniques de conservation, de transformation et de consommation. Matériel et méthodes. Un suivi des prix des fruits de cueillette commercialisés en Guinée et une analyse approfondie de leur production et de leur utilisation ont été réalisés de mars 1998 à février 2000 sur deux mêmes marchés guinéens. Pour cela, les informations requises (prix, période, conditionnement, circuit de commercialisation) ont été collectées par enquêtes effectuées tous les quinze jours et consignées sur une fiche spécifique. Résultats. L'étude a mis en évidence d'éventuels problèmes d'approvisionnement des marchés, liés à leur site. Parmi les espèces identifiées, douze se sont révélées plus importantes et ont fait l'objet d'analyses. Leurs zones de production ont été définies. La majorité des fruits commercialisés sur les marchés enquêtés mûrissent entre mars et juin ; ils représentent une source de revenus pour une bonne part de la population. Les techniques de conservation, de commercialisation, de transformation et de consommation ont été répertoriées. Conclusion. L'enquête effectuée conduit à encourager la protection des fruitiers de cueillette et à conseiller leur introduction progressive dans les vergers familiaux. Les programmes de recherches nationaux cherchent à intervenir également dans la transformation et la conservation des produits issus de cueillettes, qui posent de grosses difficultés aux producteurs.

Introduction. Damage caused by tephritid fruit flies has been identified as a major limiting factor to citrus production in Nigeria. Presently, no control measure is applied by the majority of the farmers. This study therefore seeks to evaluate the efficacy of locally-made protein bait sprays and the differences in the susceptibility of sweet orange varieties in reducing fruit fly damage. Materials and methods. In 2006 and 2007, one, two and three spot applications of locally-made protein bait mixed with chlorpyrifos insecticide were administered to Agege, Parson Brown and Valencia Late sweet oranges. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Efficacy of the bait sprays in reducing fruit attack was assessed by randomly sampling 10 ripe or ripening fruits per stand as well as dropped fruits. Results and discussion. The bait sprays significantly (p < 0.05) reduced damage of sweet orange by lowering the infestation level of Bactrocera invadens Drew Tsurata & White, and consequently reducing the number of dropped fruits. Application of three spots of bait was most effective in reducing damage due to B. invadens on sweet orange varieties. The infestation level of B. invadens and the number of dropped fruits of the variety Agege were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those of the varieties Parson Brown and Valencia Late. Conclusion. Our study shows that three spot applications were most efficacious in reducing fruit damage, and that the Valencia Late variety was the least damaged, followed by Parson Brown.

Introduction. Le contrôle sanitaire des bananes, essentiel pour assurer la qualité après-récolte du produit commercialisé, dépend beaucoup des techniques d'application des fongicides. Une enquête réalisée in situ en Martinique a mis en évidence des temps et des techniques d'application des produits fongicides variables. Différentes techniques ont été expérimentées pour définir les meilleures conditions opératoires. Matériel et méthodes. Plusieurs facteurs qui, au stade du hangar, peuvent influencer l'efficacité des applications de fongicides après-récolte ont été étudiés : l'emploi ou non d'alun, le temps d'application, le type et le débit des buses, l'angle des pulvérisations. Les traitements ont été réalisés sur fruits après inoculation contrôlée avec Colletotrichum musae sur blessures et sur couronnes. Les fruits ont ensuite été conservés 8 j à 14 °C, puis mis en maturation en simulation industrielle (24 h ; 1 L éthylène × m-3) avant d'être stockés 5 j à 22 °C. La surface des nécroses ou l'altération des pédoncules ont alors été mesurées. Résultats et discussion. L'alun ajouté à du thiabendazole a diminué l'efficacité du fongicide utilisé seul. Le temps d'aspersion a eu un effet sur la performance des produits fongicides, une application de 30 s étant le minimum souhaitable. La combinaison de l'imazalyl au thiabendazole ou au bitertanol a eu un effet favorable pour le contrôle du chancre dans les pourritures de couronne. La comparaison des débits testés a montré qu'un débit de buse de l'ordre de 0,4 L × min-1, appliqué pendant 30 s, garantissait le passage effectif de la solution fongicide entre les fruits et les bouquets. La taille des gouttes (fines ou grosses gouttelettes) a peu d'incidence quand le volume pulvérisé et le temps de contact sont respectés (5 L par tray pendant 30 s). Les performances ont été améliorées en utilisant un tray tubulaire "sans fond " , faisant intervenir une pulvérisation par-dessus et par-dessous. Conclusion. L'action réelle des fongicides est directement liée à une qualité d'application qui intègre le temps et le débit. Les préconisations données, liées à une inoculation expérimentale sévère, sont probablement surestimées ; elles peuvent cependant servir de référence dans les situations où la qualité sanitaire laisse à désirer.

Introduction. The citrus industry is one of the main activities of Brazilian agriculture. Several pests and diseases have threatened citrus culture in recent years. Genetic mapping is one of the most efficient strategies for conducting advanced genetic studies by facilitating plant selection guided by markers. The objective of this study was to construct an integrated genetic map between Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. ‘Pêra’ and C. reticulata Blanco cv. ‘Cravo’ using two different types of segregation of markers. Materials and methods. The linkage analyses were conducted with segregation data obtained from 256 RAPD markers in a population of 94 hybrids. Analyses were performed through the software JoinMap, LOD ≥ 6.0, θ ≤ 0.25, and the Kosambi function. Results and discussion. The linked map between the two cultivars had 217 markers defined by 15 linkage groups, covering 527 cM. This map had five linkage groups with common markers of ‘Pêra’ and ‘Cravo’. The inclusion of new markers would increase the number of linkage groups with markers from both parents, thus making their number equal to the haploid chromosome number. The alterations in the order and in the distances among the markers, due to the presence or absence of bridging markers in the linkage map, are discussed.

Introduction. Insect pest identification and understanding of insect pest ecological relationships constitute a basic step for any control measure needed. Some native fruit trees occur naturally in southern Mozambique and the edible fruits are sought after by local communities. Our study aimed at assessing the activity of native fruit tree insect pests during the year and their ecological relationships, providing, for the first time, a faunistic analysis of insect species affecting fruit trees in the region of Maputo, Mozambique. Materials and methods. Entomological surveys were carried out between June 2002 and December 2003 in the Districts of Manhiça, Marracuene, Namaacha and Matutuíne (southern Mozambique). Quadrangular 900-m2 plots were established in fields where Annona senegalensis, Garcinia livingstonei and Vangueria infausta native fruit trees naturally occurred. The number of individual insect pests per fruit, tree and plot was recorded to estimate ecological fauna measurements: the affinity index, association index and simultaneous constancy. Results and conclusion. A total of 1648 insect specimens, belonging to eight insect species, were found while conducting the ecological observations on Annona senegalensis Pers (Annonaceae), Garcinia livingstonei T. Anders (Clusiaceae) and Vangueria infausta Burch (Rubiaceae). Two groups of pests were observed: defoliators and insects attacking the fruits, which represented the majority. Affinity between insect species was observed, with the relationship between Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann and one unidentified species of the Cosmopterigidae family reaching the highest values. C. capitata was also found to have the highest association index with Spatulipalpia monstrosa Balinsky (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), as well as Carpophilus sp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Araecerus sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). C. capitata and Araecerus sp. had the highest simultaneous occurrence in different locations. Cluster analysis also indicated that Ceratitis capitata and Carpophilus sp. had the highest similarity percentage in all samples.

Introduction. L’orange (Citrus aurantium sinensis) est une source de composés bioactifs : vitamines C et E, flavonoïdes (flavanes et flavanones glycosylés et polyméthoxylés). Pour valoriser les déchets des peaux d’orange, nous avons mesuré l’activité antiradicalaire du jus et des peaux sèches et fraîches de cinq variétés d’orangers de Tunisie afin d’évaluer leur concentration en composés antioxydants utilisables dans l’industrie. Matériel et méthodes. Le pouvoir antiradicalaire du jus et des extraits des peaux a été évalué en suivant, en fonction du temps, la disparition du radical stable DPPH• par spectrophotométrie d’absorption UV-visible à 515 nm. L’activité antiradicalaire mesurée a été exprimée en concentration efficace (CE50). La détermination du volume V50 de vitamine C d’une solution d’acide ascorbique de concentration connue et d’un volume V50 des extraits de jus et des peaux sèches et fraîches d’orange a permis d’estimer la concentration molaire et massique de vitamine C équivalente dans les extraits. Résultats. Les jus d’orange contiennent environ 400 mg·L–1 d’équivalent de vitamine C. Dans le cas de réactions très rapides avec le radical DPPH•, la totalité de l’activité antiradicalaire peut être attribuée à la vitamine C. Dans le cas de réactions plus lentes, en plus de la vitamine C, ce sont les polyphénols (citroflavonoïdes) qui contribuent à l’activité antioxydante totale. Les extraits méthanoliques des peaux fraîches (flavédo) contiennent plus de vitamine C que les extraits de peaux sèches. Conclusion. Les peaux d’oranges constituent d’immenses sources d’antioxydants qui peuvent trouver leur application dans différents domaines : agroalimentaire, cosmétique, pharmaceutique et autres.

Introduction. Cropping systems of the mango trees in West Africa are very varied. Each one of them developed in a specific context where the agronomical practices and the varietal composition of the orchards contribute to the diversity observed. The study undertaken should make it possible to better understand the influence of the potential outlets on the evolution of the regional mango production. Principal cropping systems. In the studied area, the main part of the mango orchards has less than 10 ha; their production is extensive and uses few inputs. They belong in majority to growers whose principal activity is centred on agriculture. Certain plantations close to 100 ha, found in Senegal or in Côte.d'ivoire, belong to exporters and profit from a technical assistance. Agronomical practices. The study of the agronomical practices used in mango orchards of West Africa made it possible to analyze the aspects of seedling production, choice of the site, installation of the orchard before plantation, plantation and maintenance of the trees, fire protection, water management, as well as the effect of the export market on the varietal choice and the varietal offer during a harvest campaign. Diseases and enemies. An inventory of the pathological problems and physiological diseases likely to devalue the production were carried out. Marketing. This part made it possible to distinguish intercontinental exports, requiring a specific harvest and conditioning organization, and the local, national and regional markets. Processing. Today, the share of transformed mangos into West Africa uses only one negligible proportion of the total production. Conclusion and prospects. Beside a traditional production which presents signs of brittleness appear modern orchards. More than a necessary intensification of the orchards, a rationalization of the agronomical practices, plant health protection, fruit harvest or handling are impossible to circumvent. Downstream, the export path is confronted with a fast evolution of the exogenous regulations, based on qualitative and sanitary standards increasingly strict.

Introduction. The causal agent of Panama disease in banana is Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (FOC). The authors put forward a hypothesis to account for certain disturbances of the natural defence mechanisms of banana plants against Panama disease as a consequence of very low Zn levels which could alter the mechanism of tylose formation. Materials and methods. A long-term experiment was carried out with 2-month-old banana plants in a growth chamber at 23 °C using three different levels of Zn nutrition. The nutrient solutions were inoculated with FOC 1 and FOC 4. Results and discussion. None of the total plants growing in a nutrient solution inoculated with FOC 1 showed infected rhizomes at the end of the experiment, but 75% of the plants growing in pots inoculated with FOC 4 had infected rhizomes. On the other hand, rhizome infection by FOC 4 was influenced by the nutrient solutions. The data showed that the number of plants with damaged rhizomes was significantly higher in the Zn-deficient treatments (100% of plants) than in the normal Zn solution (25% of plants), these internal symptoms being seen to worsen as the presence of Zn decreased in the nutrient solution. Conclusions. The results obtained seem to confirm the role played by Zn nutrition of banana plants in the appearance of Panama disease and are in accordance with our hypothesis concerning the relationships among plant Zn nutrition, plant IAA level, tylose formation and the incidence of the disease. Likewise, under our experimental conditions, race 1 of FOC is confirmed to be non-pathogenic against this banana cultivar, while race 4 is indeed pathogenic.
