The crystal structure of single crystals of kaolinite from Keokuk, Iowa, was refined using data measured at the microfocus X-ray beamline at the ESRF, Grenoble, France (λ = 0.6883, T = room temperature). The volume of the crystals was 8 and 0.8 μm3, respectively. Unit-cell parameters are: a = 5.154(9) Å, b = 8.942(4) Å, c = 7.401(10) Å, α = 91.69(9)°, β = 104.61(5)°, γ = 89.82(4)°. Space group Cl is consistent with the observed data. All non-hydrogen atoms were independently refined with anisotropic displacement parameters. The positions and isotropic displacement parameters for the three interlayer H atoms were refined also. The position of the intralayer H was found by difference-Fourier methods, although refinement was not possible. Difference-Fourier maps suggested large anisotropic displacement vectors of this intralayer H, however, no evidence for a second maximum was found. The diffraction patterns show diffuse scattering in streaks parallel to [001]* through hkl reflections with hk ≠ 0, which is caused by stacking faults. No twinning was observed for either of the two crystals.

The low temperature synthesis of iron silicate minerals with clay structures is possible at surface temperatures only under reducing conditions. Under oxidizing conditions clay minerals could not be synthesized. Instead quartz and quartzine were found in these X-ray amorphous Fe III hydroxide-silica precipitates after 14 days at low temperatures (20° and 3°C) as well as geothite or X-ray amorphous iron hydroxides. Only from solutions containing Fe-II could the different iron-containing clay minerals be built up within days at low temperatures. The presence of Fe-II enables an octahedral layer of the brucite-gibbsite type to be formed. This is necessary for the bidimensional orientation of SiO4-tetrahedra leading to clay mineral formation. The presence of Fe2+- and/or Mg2+-ions is necessary for the formation of the Al3+- and Fe3+-containing octahedral layers. The reducing conditions were obtained in the experiments by addition of dithionite. With a high content of silica (ca. 20 ppm SiO2,7 ppm Fe) nontronite and lembergite, the di-Fe-III and tri-Fe-II octahedral, three-layer silicates, were built up in several days at low temperatures. With a lower silica content, that is, a lower Si/Fe ratio (15 ppm SiO2 and 20 ppm Fe), the two-layer silicate minerals greenalite and chamosite could be synthesized. A higher Mg content and more reducing conditions in the solutions favored the tri- as well as dioctahedral chamosite synthesis.

The conditions of formation of recent naturally formed nontronite fit well with the synthesis conditions. Chamosites in sedimentary iron ores are characterized by a low content of SiO2, between 15–30% SiO2. This low content of silica cannot be the result of primary precipitation from seawater. The iron and silica ratio in seawater or in river waters would lead to a precipitation of ~60% SiO2 in the iron hydroxide precipitates. A probable origin for chamosite iron ores, which explains the low SiO2 content, is diagenesis of the lateritic weathering crust. Indeed, investigations of recent tropical shoreline sediments and in particular their trace element content confirm that chamosite minerals have formed diagenetically from lateritic particles in reducing sediments.

Anisotropy in clay-rich sedimentary rocks is receiving increasing attention. Seismic anisotropy is essential in the prospecting for petroleum deposits. Anisotropy of diffusion has become relevant for environmental contaminants, including nuclear waste. In both cases, the orientation of component minerals is a critical ingredient and, largely because of small grain size and poor crystallinity, the orientation distribution of clay minerals has been difficult to quantify. A method is demonstrated that relies on hard synchrotron X-rays to obtain diffraction images of shales and applies the crystallographic Rietveld method to deconvolute the images and extract quantitative information about phase fractions and preferred orientation that can then be used to model macroscopic physical properties. The method is applied to shales from European studies which investigate the suitability of shales as potential nuclear waste repositories (Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory near Bure, France, and Benken borehole and Mont Terri Rock Laboratory, Switzerland). A Callovo-Oxfordian shale from Meuse/Haute-Marne shows a relatively weak alignment of clay minerals and a random distribution for calcite. Opalinus shales from Benken and Mont Terri show strong alignment of illite-smectite, kaolinite, chlorite, and calcite. This intrinsic contribution to anisotropy is consistent with macroscopic physical properties where anisotropy is caused both by the orientation distribution of crystallites and high-aspect-ratio pores. Polycrystal elastic properties are obtained by averaging single crystal properties over the orientation distribution and polyphase properties by averaging over all phases. From elastic properties we obtain anisotropies for p waves ranging from 7 to 22%.

A series of organoclays with monolayers, bilayers, pseudotrilayers, paraffin monolayers and paraffin bilayers were prepared from montmorillonite by ion exchange with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMAB). The HDTMAB concentrations used for preparing the organoclays were 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 times the montmorillonite cation exchange capacity (CEC). The microstructural parameters, including the BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, pore size, and surfactant loading and distribution, were determined by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption and high-resolution thermogravimetric analysis (HRTG). The BET-N2 surface area decreased from 55 to 1 m2/g and the pore volume decreased from 0.11 to 0.01 cm3/g as surfactant loading was increased from Na-Mt to 2.5CEC-Mt. The average pore diameter increased from 6.8 to 16.3 nm as surfactant loading was increased. After modifying montmorillonite with HDTMAB, two basic organoclay models were proposed on the basis of HRTG results: (1) the surfactant mainly occupied the clay interlayer space (0.5CEC-Mt, 0.7CEC-Mt, 1.0CEC-Mt); and (2) both the clay interlayer space and external surface (1.5CEC-Mt, 2.0CEC-Mt, 2.5CEC-Mt) were modified by surfactant. In model 1, the sorption mechanism of p-nitrophenol to the organoclay at a relatively low concentration involved both surface adsorption and partitioning, whereas, in model 2 it mainly involved only partitioning. This study demonstrates that the distribution of adsorbed surfactant and the arrangement of adsorbed HDTMA+ within the clay interlayer space control the efficiency and mechanism of sorption by the organoclay rather than BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter.

Reference smectites were examined to determine relationships between Li uptake, cation-exchange capacity (CEC), and octahedral layer charge after Li saturation and heating at 250°C (Hofmann-Klemen effect). Direct measurements of exchangeable Li after heating led to overestimates of charge reduction due to entrapment of Li in collapsed interlayers. Expansion of interlayers by sequential washings with 1 N MgCl2, 0.01 N MgCl2, and ethanol and subsequent determinations of exchangeable Mg provided accurate measurements of reduced charge. The CEC reductions observed in dioctahedral samples as a result of Li saturation and heating equaled octahedral charge values derived from published mineral formulae, and interlayer charge estimates obtained by alkylammonium exchange confirmed that measured CEC reductions were a consequence of uniform decreases in octahedral layer charge.

Dioctahedral specimens retained 1 to 10 meq/100 g of non-exchangeable Li in excess of CEC reduction and were acidified in direct proportion to their total Fe contents, apparently as a result of the deprotonation of structural hydroxyl groups. Mild acid treatment reprotonated these hydroxyl groups, released excess Li, and resulted in total Li contents comparable to measured CEC reductions. Heating (250°C) Mg-saturated hectorite induced a loss of octahedral Li, acidification, and a reduction of CEC, indicating that Mg had partially replaced octahedral Li. These results suggest that octahedral Li is mobile at low temperatures and that cation movement into or out of the octahedral sheet is favored if the layer charge is reduced.

Analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of weathered plagioclase and K-feldspar provided microtextural and chemical data that suggest a sequential formation of weathering products. An alteration layer < 1 µm thick on feldspar surfaces had short-range order and was termed protocrystalline. Relative to the parent feldspars the protocrystalline layer was depleted in Ca, Na, K, and Si and significantly enriched in Fe. On plagioclase, the protocrystalline material was replaced by Ca-Fe-K-smectite, another protocrystalline material, and spherical halloysite. Abundant tubular halloysite on the corroded surface apparently formed by reprecipitation of components released by plagioclase dissolution. The K-feldspar was markedly more resistant to weathering than the plagioclase.

Recrystallization of the patchily developed protocrystalline rind produced Fe-bearing, aluminous smecrite, which was ultimately replaced by spherical halloysite and laths of kaolinite. Muscovite laths within plagioclase crystals were converted initially to illite by loss of K, then to randomly interstratified illite/smectite, and then to smectite that contained Mg, little K and Fe, and was more aluminous and contained less Ca than the smectite that originally replaced the plagioclase. Smectite was replaced epitactically by kaolinite. Kaolinite was the stable weathering product of the feldspars and muscovite in the profiles. It probably formed in equilibrium with a solution whose composition was no longer controlled by the microenvironment within the feldspar, but approached that of meteoric water.

X-ray analysis of Li+- and K+-saturated samples, differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and chemical analysis of 83 samples enable a distinction to be made between Wyoming, Tatatilla, Otay, Chambers, and non-ideal types of montmorillonite, and between ideal and non-ideal types of beidellite. The Greene-Kelly Li+-test differentiates between the montmorillonites and beidellites. Re-expansion with ethylene glycol after K+-saturation and heating at 300°C depends upon total net layer charge and not upon location of the charge. Wyoming-type montmorillonites characteristically have low net layer charge and re-expand to 17 Å, whereas most other montmorillonites and beidellites have a higher net layer charge and re-expand to less than 17 Å.

Major differences in dehydroxylation temperatures cannot be related consistently to the amount of Al3+-for-Si1+ substitution, nor to the amount of Mg, Fe, type of interlayer cations, or particle size. The major factor controlling temperature of dehydroxylation seems to be the amount of structural (OH). Of 19 samples analyzed by TGA, montmorillonites and the one ideal beidellite that give dehydroxylation endotherms on their DTA curves between 650° and 760°C all contain nearly the ideal amount of 4(OH) per unit cell, but the non-ideal montmorillonites and beidellites that give dehydroxylation peaks between 550° and 600°C do not. Non-ideal beidellites contain more than the ideal amount of structural (OH) and non-ideal montmorillonites seem to contain less, although the low temperature of dehydroxylation of the latter could also be due to other structural defects. Change in X-ray diffraction intensity of the 001 reflection during dehydroxylation suggests that the extra (OH) of beidellite occurs at the apex of SiO4 or AlO4 tetrahedrons with the H+ of the (OH)− polarized toward vacant cation sites in the octahedral sheet.

Transmission electron microscopy suggests that biotite transforms to vermiculite primarily by direct structural modification, involving the replacement of K+ by hydrated interlayer cations, and only minor reorganization of the 2:1 layer. A second relatively uncommon mechanism appears to involve redistribution of components from two biotite sheets to form a single vermiculite layer. Distortion of the surrounding structure initially inhibits growth of vermiculite in the surrounding biotite, and promotes the propagation of vermiculite layers in opposite directions. This phenomenon may contribute to the development of relatively regular, widely spaced interstratifications of biotite and vermiculite. Additional components and space are provided by the dissolution of biotite where access of solutions is greater.

During weathering, biotite and vermiculite become increasingly replaced by kaolinite, which crystallizes epitactically onto existing layers, and goethite, which develops from a poorly crystalline iron oxyhydroxide precursor to form oriented laths. In areas parts of strongly weathered samples kaolinite and goethite appear to develop in proportions consistent with a reaction that conserves both Al and Fe.

The effect of Fe oxidation state on the surface charge (CEC) and solubility of smectites were studied using the <2-μm, Na+-saturated fraction of an Upton, Wyoming; a Czechoslovakian; and a New Zealand montmorillonite; and a Garfield, Washington, nontronite. The reduction of structural Fe3+ in the octahedral sheet of each clay produced a net increase in the negative surface charge of the clay. The observed cation-exchange capacities deviated from the linear relationship predicted by charge-deficit calculations, assuming changes only in the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio, and reversibly followed Fe reduction according to a 2nd-degree polynomial function. The deviations suggest reversible changes in mineral structure and composition during Fe reduction.

These clays were susceptible to partial dissolution in citrate bicarbonate (CB) and citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) solutions. Small amounts of Fe and Si dissolved as a result of Fe reduction in CBD, but affected <1% of the total clay mass except for the Czechoslovakian clay in which 2% of the clay dissolved. Although slightly more Fe dissolved than Si, no change in surface charge was noted. Almost no dissolution of these elements was detected in CB solution. In contrast, significant Al was detected in the CB solution, suggesting a heterogeneous dissolution mechanism. The CEC, however, was unchanged by the CB treatment. These results may be explained by the adsorption of hydrogen ions into the vacated Al3+ sites in the mineral structure. Dissolution seems to have been independent of the effects of Fe oxidation state on surface charge.

The layer charge is perhaps the single most significant characteristic of 2: 1 layer phyllosilicates. Layer charge affects cation-retention capacity and adsorption of water, and various polar organic molecules. The effects of layer charge on the sorptive properties of organo- clays were illustrated by Lee et al. (1990). It is generally agreed that the classification of 2: 1 silicate clays, which is a continuing problem, may be resolved by taking into account the magnitude of the layer charge (Bailey et al., 1971; Malla and Douglas, 1987). Studies on structural chemistry also confirm the importance of the layer charge for the characterization of the 2:1 phyllosilicates (Newman and Brown, 1987).

The relationships between spectrum and structure in layer-silicates are reviewed, and applied in the study of structural changes occurring during the heating of montmorillonites up to dehydroxylation, and their subsequent rehydroxylation. Information given by infrared spectroscopy on the binding of water in expanding layer silicates is presented, and the physical and chemical processes associated with entry of basic, neutral and acidic molecules into the interlayer space of these minerals are illustrated for ammonia, ethylamine, pyridine, nitrobenzene, and benzoic acid. Problems associated with the study of soil clays, which are often complex mixtures including poorly ordered and amorphous constituents, frequently firmly combined with organic matter, are discussed.

New evidence is presented concerning the environment of the two types of hydroxyl group in beidellite. The thermal stabilities of NH4+ and lattice OH in montmorillonite and beidellite, and the properties of their dehydroxylates, are contrasted. The nature of the collapsed phase formed in Li-, Mg-, and NH4-montmorillonite at 300–500°C is discussed. The presence of weak hydrogen bonds between lattice oxygens and interlayer water is established, although it is shown that the strength of hydrogen bonds formed between NH4+ and lattice oxygens is dependent on the sites of substitution in the layer lattice.

Fibrous sepiolite crystals derive much of their commercial value from their molecular size channels and grooves. The crystals fold upon drying and these channels and grooves are lost. A model for the folding and unfolding of the crystals is presented. Extensive i.r., X-ray and thermogravimetric evidence shows that folding occurs when approximately half of the water of hydration, which is coordinated to the edge magnesium atoms inside of the channels, is removed. This occurs near 175°C under vacuum and near 300°C in air. When the crystals fold, all remaining water molecules enter a new environment, that of the hexagonal holes of the neighboring silica surface. A true anhydride is produced at about 500°C under vacuum when the final water is lost, but this final dehydration produces no important structural change. Rehydration of the anhydride to the normal hydrated sepiolite does not occur at room temperatures in 100% r.h. However, above, 60°C rehydration does occur.

The continuous conversion of smectite to illite in samples from the Shinzan hydrothermal alteration area of Japan has been examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission (TEM) and analytical transmission electron microscopy (AEM). TEM shows that randomly interstratified illite/ smectite (I/S) containing 100-50% expandable layers exhibits a flakey shape, whereas regularly and partially ordered interstratified I/S having 50-0% expandable layers exhibits a lath-like habit. An early- formed lath of regularly interstratified I/S is typically <35 Å in thickness and 300–500 Å in width; these dimensions gradually increase with decreasing percentage of expandable layers. XRD shows that the lathshaped I/S has a 1M polytype mica structure. AEM shows that the interlayer K content of flakey I/S increases monotonously with decreasing percentage of expandable layers in the range 100-50% expandable layers, whereas the interlayer K content of lath-shaped I/S increases along a different trend from that for the flakey I/S in the range 50-0% expandable layers. These observations suggest that randomly interstratified I/S is fundamentally smectite that is undergoing K-fixation and dissolution and that regularly and partially ordered interstratified I/S are immature illite which is still growing. Consequently, they suggest a mechanism for the hydrothermal smectite-to-illite conversion that is based on the K-fixation in and dissolution of smectite and the precipitation and growth of thin illite particles. Furthermore, these data suggest that the kinetics of smectite dissolution and illite growth are the most important factors controlling the smectite-to-illite conversion.

Although phosphate sorption by goethite and other less-abundant Fe oxides strongly influences the concentration of this anion in the soil solution and aquatic environments, relatively little is known on the P-sorption characteristics of natural goethites. For this reason, we examined the P-sorption capacity and time course of P sorption of 10 goethite-rich soil, ferricrete and lake ore samples, in which the content and nature of mineral impurities were unlikely to affect P sorption significantly. Phosphate sorption could be adequately described by a modified Freundlich equation including a time term. The amount of P sorbed after 1 day of equilibration at a concentration of 1 mg P/liter ranged widely (0.36–2.04 /μmol P/m2). The total P sorbed after 75 days of equilibration varied less, in relative terms (1.62–3.18 μmol P/m2), i.e., a higher slow sorption tended to compensate for a lower initial (fast) sorption. Total sorbed P (X̄ = 2.62, SD = 0.52 μmol P/m2) was similar to the sorption capacity of synthetic goethites, suggesting a common sorption mechanism and the predominance of one type of crystal face, which, according to previous transmission electron microscope observations, might be the (110).

The extent of the slow reaction correlated to the ratio between micropore surface area and total surface area, as well as to oxalate-extractable Fe, which is an estimation of the ferrihydrite content. Ferrihydrite impurities might affect the slow reaction by contributing to the microporosity of some samples. Silicate adsorbed on the surface of the goethites was readily desorbed during phosphate sorption and did not significantly affect the extent of the slow sorption process.

Infrared analysis showed that the bonding habit of oxyanions with freshly precipitated hydrous ferric oxides depends upon the nature of the anion and its hydration level. Monovalent oxyanions adsorb through an electrostatic interaction with the hydrated hydrous oxide surface. All divalent oxyanions, with the exception of tellurate, coordinate directly with surface iron cations. Tellurate, an octahedral anion, apparently penetrates and incorporates in the hydrous oxide structure. The symmetry of the free anion has a significant role in determining the configuration of the resultant complex. For anions of the same charge, those with tetrahedral geometry (in uncoordinated states) show a higher degree of specificity for the surface than the trigonal planer anions. Without exception, each bidentate bridging complex forms by replacement of protonated and unprotonated hydroxyls. With the anion geometry and the charge being equal, the suspension pH determines the adsorption capacity of the hydrous oxide.

A review is presented of work carried out over the last 40 years on non-porous sorbents and on microporous shape-selective sorbents derived from palygorskite, smectite, and vermiculite. Among such materials four kinds of behavior were observed. In some systems uptake was restricted to external surfaces; in others, intercalation also occurred but only above threshold pressures. If the interlayer region was completely filled by long-chain organic cations, imbibition was possible, but in amounts which were very strongly dependent upon the cohesive energy density of the sorbate. Finally, in certain permanently expanded derivatives of layer silicates intercalation proceeded without any threshold pressure, just as in zeolites.

In this latter group, micropores existed which sometimes resulted in shape-selective sorption and molecule sieving. The micropores in clay minerals were modified by varying the size and shape of the interlayer cations, their charge, and the charge density of the siliceous layers. The interplay of these factors was investigated and the micropore sorbents were shown to be highly effective in the separation of mixtures.

Organic matter removal is accomplished rapidly and efficiently without removing carbonates by treating samples with a sodium hypochlorite solution. Quantities of organic matter left in samples by this treatment are commonly less than remain after hydrogen peroxide treatment of acidified samples.

Stable suspensions result from the use of a sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution to wash and sodium saturate the samples without dissolving or complexing sesquioxides.

Illite polytype quantification allows the differentiation of diagenetic and detrital illite components. In Paleozoic shales from the Illinois Basin, we observe 3 polytypes: 1Md, 1M and 2M1. 1Md and 1M are of diagenetic origin and 2M1 is of detrital origin. In this paper, we compare experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) traces with traces calculated using WILDFIRE© and quantify mixtures of all 3 polytypes, adjusting the effects of preferred orientation and overlapping peaks. The broad intensity (“illite hump”) around the illite 003, which is very common in illite from shales, is caused by the presence of 1Md illite and mixing of illite polytypes and is not an artifact of sample preparation or other impurities in the sample. Illite polytype quantification provides a tool to extrapolate the K/Ar age and chemistry of the detrital and diagenetic end-members by analysis of different size fractions containing different proportions of diagenetic and detrital illite polytypes.

Adsorption of asphaltenes and resins onto montmorillonite occurs rapidly and to a large extent irreversibly under near-anhydrous laboratory conditions. Factors which influence the adsorption are the exchangeable cation on the clay, the basic nitrogen components of the molecules, and the solvent. As a result of this adsorption, the physical and chemical properties of the clay are drastically altered. The fundamental principles revealed in this study lead to a better understanding of the physical and chemical behavior of clays in petroleum reservoirs.
