Until recently most authors have devoted their research to the theory of perturbed systems under continuous perturbations. In this paper, Liapunov's second method is employed to investigate sufficient conditions for integral and integral asymptotic stability of ordinary differential systems with respect to impulsive perturbations.

An example is given of an infinite cyclic extension of a free group of finite rank in which not every finitely generated subgroup is finitely separable. This answers negatively the question of Peter Scott as to whether in all finitely generated 3-manifold groups the finitely generated subgroups are finitely separable. In the positive direction it is shown that in knot groups and one-relator groups with centre, the finitely generated normal subgroups are finitely separable.

Suppose there exist a balanced incomplete block design with λ = 1 and an affine resolvable balanced incomplete block design, the two designs having the same replication number. Combining these designs we construct two strongly regular graphs. This is applied to give a new family of design graphs ((v, k, λ)-graphs). Finally, we show that for any prime power n there are two non-isomorphic design graphs with v = n2(n+2), k = n(n+1) and λ = n.

A result by the author on the elimination of randomization (or relaxation) for variational problems is partially extended and then used to obtain a very general result on the denseness of the set of original control functions in the set of relaxed control functions. Also, a slight extension of Aumann's theorem on the integrals of multifunctions is shown to follow directly from the elimination result.

Let f: X → X be a map of a continuum X. Let P(f) denote the set of all periodic points of f and R(f) denote the set of all recurrent points of f. In [2], Coven and Hedlund proved that if f: I → I is a map of the unit interval I = [0, 1], then CI(P(f)) = CI(R(f)). In [7], Ye generalised this result to maps of a tree. It is natural to ask whether the result generalises to maps of a dendrite. (A dendrite is a locally connected continuum which contains no simple closed curve.) The aim of this paper is to show that the answer is negative.

We show that the Hypercyclicity Criterion coincides with other existing hypercyclicity criteria and prove that a wide class of hypercyclic operators satisfy the Criterion. The results obtained extend or improve earlier work of several authors. We also unify the different versions of the Supercyclicity Criterion and show that operators with dense generalised kernel and dense range are supercyclic.

Semigroups consisting of composition operators are considered on weighted Bergman spaces. They are strongly continuous, and their infinitesimal generators are identified. One specific semigroup is used to obtain information on an averaging operator.

In this paper we establish new optimal bounds for the derivative of some discrete maximal functions, in both the centred and uncentred versions. In particular, we solve a question originally posed by Bober et al. [‘On a discrete version of Tanaka’s theorem for maximal functions’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.140 (2012), 1669–1680].

A central theorem in the theory of graphic sequences is due to P. Erdos and T. Gallai. Here, we give a simple proof of this theorem by induction on the sum of the sequence.

In this paper we investigate the center, radius and girth of comaximal graphs of commutative rings. We also provide some counterexamples to the results concerning the relation between isomorphisms of comaximal graphs and the rings in question. In addition, we investigate the relation between the comaximal graph of a ring and its subrings of a certain type.

An Atsuji space is a metric space X such that each continuous function form X to an arbitrary metric space Y is uniformly continuous. We here present (i) characterizations of metric spaces with Atsuji completions; (ii) Cantor-type theorems for Atsuji spaces; (iii) a fixed point theorem for self-maps of an Atsuji space.

Let X be a finite set of cardinality n, and let F be a family of k-subsets of X. In this paper we prove the following conjecture of P. Erdös and V.T. Sós.

If n > n0(k), k ≥ 4, then we can find two members F and G in F such that |F ∩ G| = 1.

In this paper, it is proved that every isometry between the unit spheres of two real Banach spaces preserves the frames of the unit balls. As a consequence, if $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}X$ and $Y$ are $n$-dimensional Banach spaces and $T_0$ is an isometry from the unit sphere of $X$ onto that of $Y$ then it maps the set of all $(n-1)$-extreme points of the unit ball of $X$ onto that of $Y$.

Based on the work of Mauldin and Williams [‘On the Hausdorff dimension of some graphs’, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 298(2) (1986), 793–803] on convex Lipschitz functions, we prove that fractal interpolation functions belong to the space of convex Lipschitz functions under certain conditions. Using this, we obtain some dimension results for fractal functions. We also give some bounds on the fractal dimension of fractal functions with the help of oscillation spaces.

In this paper we calculate the number of congugacy classes in the following finite classical groups: GLn(Fq); PGLn(Fq), SLn(Fq), and more generally G(Fq), where G is any algebraic group isogenous to SLn; PSLn(Fq); ; , , and more generally where G is any group isogenous to SUn over Fq; and .

In this note we give a simple proof of the endpoint regularity for the uncentred Hardy–Littlewood maximal function on $\mathbb{R}$. Our proof is based on identities for the local maximum points of the corresponding maximal functions, which are of interest in their own right.

Using the characterization of the free inverse semigroup F on a set X, given by Scheiblich, a necessary and sufficient condition is found for a subset K of an inverse semigroup S to be a set of free generators for the inverse sub semigroup of S generated by K. It is then shown that any non-idempotent element of F generates the free inverse semigroup on one generator and that if |X| > 2 then F contains the free inverse semigroup on a countable number of generators. In addition, it is shown that if |X| = 1 then F does not contain the free inverse semigroup on two generators.

We show that continuous triangular maps of the square I1, F: (x, y) → (f(x), g(x, y)), exhibit phenomena impossible in the one-dimensional case. In particular: (1) A triangular map F with zero topological entropy can have a minimal set containing an interval {a} × I, and can have recurrent points that are not uniformly recurrent; this solves two problems by S.F. Kolyada.

(2) In the class of mappings satisfying Per(F) = Fix(F), there are non-chaotic maps with positive sequence topological entropy and chaotic maps with zero sequence topological entropy.

We study real hypersurfaces M of a complex projective space and show that a condition on the derivative of the Ricci Tensor of M implies M is locally homogeneous with two or three principal curvatures.

We prove that certain square function operators in the Littlewood-Paley theory defined by the kernels without any regularity are bounded on , 1 < p < ∞, w ∈ Ap (the weights of Muckenhoupt). Then, we give some applications to the Carleson measures on the upper half space.
