We study the asymptotic behaviour of the least energy solutions to the following class of nonlocal Neumann problems:

where $\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^{n}$ is a bounded domain of class $C^{1,1}$, $1<p<({n+s})/({n-s}),\,n>\max \{1, 2s \}, 0<s<1, d>0$ and $\mathcal {N}_{s}u$ is the nonlocal Neumann derivative. We show that for small $d,$ the least energy solutions $u_d$ of the above problem achieve an $L^{\infty }$-bound independent of $d.$ Using this together with suitable $L^{r}$-estimates on $u_d,$ we show that the least energy solution $u_d$ achieves a maximum on the boundary of $\Omega $ for d sufficiently small.

We use potential analysis to study the properties of positive solutions of a discrete Wolff-type equation

Here, $n \geq 1$, $\min \{q,\beta \}>0$, $1<\gamma \leq 2$ and $\beta \gamma <n$. Such an equation can be used to study nonlinear problems on graphs appearing in the study of crystal lattices, neural networks and other discrete models. We use the method of regularity lifting to obtain an optimal summability of positive solutions of the equation. From this result, we obtain the decay rate of $w(i)$ when $|i| \to \infty $.

We consider the two-dimensional minimisation problem for $\inf \{ E_a(\varphi ):\varphi \in H^1(\mathbb {R}^2)\ \text {and}\ \|\varphi \|_2^2=1\}$, where the energy functional $ E_a(\varphi )$ is a cubic-quintic Schrödinger functional defined by $E_a(\varphi ):=\tfrac 12\int _{\mathbb {R}^2}|\nabla \varphi |^2\,dx-\tfrac 14a\int _{\mathbb {R}^2}|\varphi |^4\,dx+\tfrac 16a^2\int _{\mathbb {R}^2}|\varphi |^6\,dx$. We study the existence and asymptotic behaviour of the ground state. The ground state $\varphi _{a}$ exists if and only if the $L^2$ mass a satisfies $a>a_*={\lVert Q\rVert }^2_2$, where Q is the unique positive radial solution of $-\Delta u+ u-u^3=0$ in $\mathbb {R}^2$. We show the optimal vanishing rate $\int _{\mathbb {R}^2}|\nabla \varphi _{a}|^2\,dx\sim (a-a_*)$ as $a\searrow a_*$ and obtain the limit profile.

We consider a parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis system with singular chemotactic sensitivity and source functions, which is originally introduced by Short et al to model the spatio-temporal behaviour of urban criminal activities with the particular value of the chemotactic sensitivity parameter $\chi =2$. The available analytical findings for this urban crime model including $\chi =2$ are restricted either to one-dimensional setting, or to initial data and source functions with appropriate smallness, or to initial data and source functions with some radial symmetry. In the present work, our first result asserts that for any $\chi \gt 0$ the initial-boundary value problem of this urban crime model possesses a global generalised solution in the two-dimensional setting, without imposing any small or radial conditions on initial data and source functions. Our second result presents the asymptotic behaviour of such solution, under some additional assumptions on source functions.

We consider the growth of the convex viscosity solution of the Monge–Ampère equation $\det D^2u=1$ outside a bounded domain of the upper half space. We show that if u is a convex quadratic polynomial on the boundary $\{x_n=0\}$ and there exists some $\varepsilon>0$ such that $u=O(|x|^{3-\varepsilon })$ at infinity, then $u=O(|x|^2)$ at infinity. As an application, we improve the asymptotic result at infinity for viscosity solutions of Monge–Ampère equations in half spaces of Jia, Li and Li [‘Asymptotic behavior at infinity of solutions of Monge–Ampère equations in half spaces’, J. Differential Equations 269(1) (2020), 326–348].

In this paper, we characterize jump phenomena of the $n$-th eigenvalue of self-adjoint discrete Sturm–Liouville problems in any dimension. For a fixed Sturm–Liouville equation, we completely characterize jump phenomena of the $n$-th eigenvalue. For a fixed boundary condition, unlike in the continuous case, the $n$-th eigenvalue exhibits jump phenomena and we describe the singularity under a non-degenerate assumption. Compared with the continuous case in Hu et al. (2019, J. Differ. Equ. 266, 4106–4136) and Kong et al. (1999, J. Differ. Equ. 156, 328–354), the jump set here is involved with coefficients of the Sturm–Liouville equations. This, along with arbitrariness of the dimension, causes difficulty when dividing the jump areas. We study the singularity by partitioning and analysing the local coordinate systems, and provide a Hermitian matrix which can determine the areas’ division. To prove the asymptotic behaviour of the $n$-th eigenvalue, we generalize the method developed in Zhu and Shi (2016, J. Differ. Equ. 260, 5987–6016) to any dimension. As an application, by transforming the continuous Sturm–Liouville problem of Atkinson type to a discrete one, we determine the number of eigenvalues and obtain complete characterization of jump phenomena of the $n$-th eigenvalue for the Atkinson type.

This paper is concerned with a prey–predator model with population flux by attractive transition. Our previous paper (Oeda and Kuto, 2018, Nonlinear Anal. RWA, 44, 589–615) obtained a bifurcation branch (connected set) of coexistence steady states which connects two semitrivial solutions. In Oeda and Kuto (2018, Nonlinear Anal. RWA, 44, 589–615), we also showed that any positive steady-state approaches a positive solution of either of two limiting systems, and moreover, one of the limiting systems is an equal diffusive competition model. This paper obtains the bifurcation structure of positive solutions to the other limiting system. Moreover, this paper implies that the global bifurcation branch of coexistence states consists of two parts, one of which is a simple curve running in a tubular domain near the set of positive solutions to the equal diffusive competition model, the other of which is a connected set characterized by positive solutions to the other limiting system.

This work studies functional difference equations of the second order with a potential belonging to a special class of meromorphic functions. The equations depend on a spectral parameter. Consideration of this type of equations is motivated by applications in diffraction theory and by construction of eigenfunctions for the Laplace operator in angular domains. In particular, such eigenfunctions describe eigenoscillations of acoustic waves in angular domains with ‘semitransparent’ boundary conditions. For negative values of the spectral parameter, we study essential and discrete spectrum of the equations and describe properties of the corresponding solutions. The study is based on the reduction of the functional difference equations to integral equations with a symmetric kernel. A sufficient condition is formulated for the potential that ensures existence of the discrete spectrum. The obtained results are applied for studying the behaviour of eigenfunctions for the Laplace operator in adjacent angular domains with the Robin-type boundary conditions on their common boundary. At infinity, the eigenfunctions vanish exponentially as was expected. However, the rate of such decay depends on the observation direction. In particular, in a vicinity of some directions, the regime of decay is switched from one to another and such asymptotic behaviour is described by a Fresnel-type integral.

In this paper, we derive and analyse mean-field models for the dynamics of groups of individuals undergoing a random walk. The random motion of individuals is only influenced by the perceived densities of the different groups present as well as the available space. All individuals have the tendency to stay within their own group and avoid the others. These interactions lead to the formation of aggregates in case of a single species and to segregation in the case of multiple species. We derive two different mean-field models, which are based on these interactions and weigh local and non-local effects differently. We discuss existence and stability properties of solutions for both models and illustrate the rich dynamics with numerical simulations.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the powers of a composition operator on various Banach spaces of holomorphic functions on the disc, namely, standard weighted Bergman spaces (finite and infinite order), Bloch space, little Bloch space, Bloch-type space and Dirichlet space. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of those composition operators that are similar to an isometry on these various Banach spaces. We conclude by studying the asymptotic behaviour of semigroups of composition operators on these various Banach spaces.

We study a free boundary problem of the form: ut = uxx + f(t, u) (g(t) < x < h(t)) with free boundary conditions h′(t) = −ux(t, h(t)) – α(t) and g′(t) = −ux(t, g(t)) + β(t), where β(t) and α(t) are positive T-periodic functions, f(t, u) is a Fisher–KPP type of nonlinearity and T-periodic in t. This problem can be used to describe the spreading of a biological or chemical species in time-periodic environment, where free boundaries represent the spreading fronts of the species. We study the asymptotic behaviour of bounded solutions. There are two T-periodic functions α0(t) and α*(t; β) with 0 < α0 < α* which play key roles in the dynamics. More precisely, (i) in case 0 < β< α0 and 0 < α < α*, we obtain a trichotomy result: (i-1) spreading, that is, h(t) – g(t) → +∞ and u(t, ⋅ + ct) → 1 with $c\in (-\overline{l},\overline{r})$, where $ \overline{l}:=\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^{T}l(s)ds$, $\overline{r}:=\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^{T}r(s)ds$, the T-periodic functions −l(t) and r(t) are the asymptotic spreading speeds of g(t) and h(t) respectively (furthermore, r(t) > 0 > −l(t) when 0 < β < α < α0; r(t) = 0 > −l(t) when 0 < β < α = α0; $0 \gt \overline{r} \gt -\overline{l}$ when 0 < β < α0 < α < α*); (i-2) vanishing, that is, $\lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}h(t) = \lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}g(t)$ and $\lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}\max\limits_{g(t)\leq x\leq h(t)} u(t,x)=0$, where $\mathcal {T}$ is some positive constant; (i-3) transition, that is, g(t) → −∞, h(t) → −∞, $0<\lim\limits_{t \to \infty}[h(t)-g(t)] \lt +\infty$ and u(t, ⋅) → V(t, ⋅), where V is a T-periodic solution with compact support. This work is devoted to the study of an integro-differential system of equations modelling the genetic adaptation of a pathogen by taking into account both mutation and selection processes. First, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the system and prove that it eventually converges to a stationary state. Next, we more closely investigate the behaviour of the system in the presence of multiple EAs. Under suitable assumptions and based on a small mutation variance asymptotic, we describe the existence of a long transient regime during which the pathogen population remains far from its asymptotic behaviour and highly concentrated around some phenotypic value that is different from the one described by its asymptotic behaviour. In that setting, the time needed for the system to reach its large time configuration is very long and multiple evolutionary attractors may act as a barrier of evolution that can be very long to bypass.

We study a class of parabolic equations which can be viewed as a generalized mean curvature flow acting on cylindrically symmetric surfaces with a Dirichlet condition on the boundary. We prove the existence of a unique solution by means of an approximation scheme. We also develop the theory of asymptotic stability for solutions of general parabolic problems.

We study the dynamics of a reaction–diffusion–advection equation $u_{t}=u_{xx}-au_{x}+f(u)$ on the right half-line with Robin boundary condition $u_{x}=au$ at $x=0$, where $f(u)$ is a combustion nonlinearity. We show that, when $0<a<c$ (where $c$ is the travelling wave speed of $u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(u)$), $u$ converges in the $L_{loc}^{\infty }([0,\infty ))$ topology either to $0$ or to a positive steady state; when $a\geq c$, a solution $u$ starting from a small initial datum tends to $0$ in the $L^{\infty }([0,\infty ))$ topology, but this is not true for a solution starting from a large initial datum; when $a>c$, such a solution converges to $0$ in $L_{loc}^{\infty }([0,\infty ))$ but not in $L^{\infty }([0,\infty ))$ topology.
