In this work, we develop an integral representation for the partial L-function of a pair $\pi \times \tau $ of genuine irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations, $\pi $ of the m-fold covering of Matsumoto of the symplectic group $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$ and $\tau $ of a certain covering group of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_k$, with arbitrary m, n and k. Our construction is based on the recent extension by Cai, Friedberg, Ginzburg and the author, of the classical doubling method of Piatetski-Shapiro and Rallis, from rank-$1$ twists to arbitrary rank twists. We prove a basic global identity for the integral and compute the local integrals with unramified data. Our global results are subject to certain conjectures, but when $k=1$ they are unconditional for all m. One possible future application of this work will be a Shimura-type lift of representations from covering groups to general linear groups. In a recent work, we used the present results in order to provide an analytic definition of local factors for representations of the m-fold covering of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$.

Let X be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve defined over a finite field ${\mathbb {F}}_q$ of characteristic p different from $2$ and $S\subseteq X$ a subset of closed points. Let $\overline {X}$ and $\overline {S}$ be their base changes to an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb {F}}_q$. We study the number of $\ell $-adic local systems $(\ell \neq p)$ in rank $2$ over $\overline {X}-\overline {S}$ with all possible prescribed tame local monodromies fixed by k-fold iterated action of Frobenius endomorphism for every $k\geq 1$. In all cases, we confirm conjectures of Deligne predicting that these numbers behave as if they were obtained from a Lefschetz fixed point formula. In fact, our counting results are expressed in terms of the numbers of some Higgs bundles.

Let G be a split connected reductive group defined over $\mathbb {Z}$. Let F and $F'$ be two non-Archimedean m-close local fields, where m is a positive integer. D. Kazhdan gave an isomorphism between the Hecke algebras $\mathrm {Kaz}_m^F :\mathcal {H}\big (G(F),K_F\big ) \rightarrow \mathcal {H}\big (G(F'),K_{F'}\big )$, where $K_F$ and $K_{F'}$ are the mth usual congruence subgroups of $G(F)$ and $G(F')$, respectively. On the other hand, if $\sigma $ is an automorphism of G of prime order l, then we have Brauer homomorphism $\mathrm {Br}:\mathcal {H}(G(F),U(F))\rightarrow \mathcal {H}(G^\sigma (F),U^\sigma (F))$, where $U(F)$ and $U^\sigma (F)$ are compact open subgroups of $G(F)$ and $G^\sigma (F),$ respectively. In this article, we study the compatibility between these two maps in the local base change setting. Further, an application of this compatibility is given in the context of linkage – which is the representation theoretic version of Brauer homomorphism.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified and let $B$ be a quaternion algebra over $F$ which splits at at most one infinite place. Let $\overline {r}:\operatorname {{\mathrm {Gal}}}(\overline {F}/F)\rightarrow \mathrm {GL}_2(\overline {\mathbb {F}}_p)$ be a modular Galois representation which satisfies the Taylor–Wiles hypotheses. Assume that for some fixed place $v|p$, $B$ ramifies at $v$ and $F_v$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb {Q}_p$ and $\overline {r}$ is generic at $v$. We prove that the admissible smooth representations of the quaternion algebra over $\mathbb {Q}_p$ coming from mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to $B$ have Gelfand–Kirillov dimension $1$. As an application we prove that the degree-two Scholze's functor (which is defined by Scholze [On the $p$-adic cohomology of the Lubin–Tate tower, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 51 (2018), 811–863]) vanishes on generic supersingular representations of $\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbb {Q}_p)$. We also prove some finer structure theorems about the image of Scholze's functor in the reducible case.

We prove a general formula that relates the parity of the Langlands parameter of a conjugate self-dual discrete series representation of $\operatorname { {GL}}_n$ to the parity of its Jacquet-Langlands image. It gives a generalization of a partial result by Mieda concerning the case of invariant $1/n$ and supercuspidal representations. It also gives a variation of the result on the self-dual case by Prasad and Ramakrishnan.

For a connected reductive group G over a nonarchimedean local field F of positive characteristic, Genestier-Lafforgue and Fargues-Scholze have attached a semisimple parameter ${\mathcal {L}}^{ss}(\pi )$ to each irreducible representation $\pi $. Our first result shows that the Genestier-Lafforgue parameter of a tempered $\pi $ can be uniquely refined to a tempered L-parameter ${\mathcal {L}}(\pi )$, thus giving the unique local Langlands correspondence which is compatible with the Genestier-Lafforgue construction. Our second result establishes ramification properties of ${\mathcal {L}}^{ss}(\pi )$ for unramified G and supercuspidal $\pi $ constructed by induction from an open compact (modulo center) subgroup. If ${\mathcal {L}}^{ss}(\pi )$ is pure in an appropriate sense, we show that ${\mathcal {L}}^{ss}(\pi )$ is ramified (unless G is a torus). If the inducing subgroup is sufficiently small in a precise sense, we show $\mathcal {L}^{ss}(\pi )$ is wildly ramified. The proofs are via global arguments, involving the construction of Poincaré series with strict control on ramification when the base curve is ${\mathbb {P}}^1$ and a simple application of Deligne’s Weil II.

We study the growth of the local $L^2$-norms of the unitary Eisenstein series for reductive groups over number fields, in terms of their parameters. We derive a poly-logarithmic bound on an average, for a large class of reductive groups. The method is based on Arthur’s development of the spectral side of the trace formula, and ideas of Finis, Lapid and Müller.

As applications of our method, we prove the optimal lifting property for $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z}/q\mathbb {Z})$ for square-free q, as well as the Sarnak–Xue [52] counting property for the principal congruence subgroup of $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z})$ of square-free level. This makes the recent results of Assing–Blomer [8] unconditional.

Let $G$ be a split semisimple group over a global function field $K$. Given a cuspidal automorphic representation $\Pi$ of $G$ satisfying a technical hypothesis, we prove that for almost all primes $\ell$, there is a cyclic base change lifting of $\Pi$ along any $\mathbb {Z}/\ell \mathbb {Z}$-extension of $K$. Our proof does not rely on any trace formulas; instead it is based on using modularity lifting theorems, together with a Smith theory argument, to obtain base change for residual representations. As an application, we also prove that for any split semisimple group $G$ over a local function field $F$, and almost all primes $\ell$, any irreducible admissible representation of $G(F)$ admits a base change along any $\mathbb {Z}/\ell \mathbb {Z}$-extension of $F$. Finally, we characterize local base change more explicitly for a class of toral representations considered in work of Chan and Oi.

We formulate and prove the archimedean period relations for Rankin–Selberg convolutions for ${\mathrm {GL}}(n)\times {\mathrm {GL}}(n-1)$. As a consequence, we prove the period relations for critical values of the Rankin–Selberg L-functions for ${\mathrm {GL}}(n)\times {\mathrm {GL}}(n-1)$ over arbitrary number fields.

Let $\pi $ be a cuspidal, cohomological automorphic representation of an inner form G of $\operatorname {{PGL}}_2$ over a number field F of arbitrary signature. Further, let $\mathfrak {p}$ be a prime of F such that G is split at $\mathfrak {p}$ and the local component $\pi _{\mathfrak {p}}$ of $\pi $ at $\mathfrak {p}$ is the Steinberg representation. Assuming that the representation is noncritical at $\mathfrak {p}$, we construct automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants for the representation $\pi $. If the number field F is totally real, we show that these automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants agree with the Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariant of the associated p-adic Galois representation. This generalizes a recent result of Spieß respectively Rosso and the first named author from the case of parallel weight $2$ to arbitrary cohomological weights.

Let f be an $L^2$-normalized holomorphic newform of weight k on $\Gamma _0(N) \backslash \mathbb {H}$ with N squarefree or, more generally, on any hyperbolic surface $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb {H}$ attached to an Eichler order of squarefree level in an indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb {Q}$. Denote by V the hyperbolic volume of said surface. We prove the sup-norm estimate

with absolute implied constant. For a cuspidal Maaß newform $\varphi $ of eigenvalue $\lambda $ on such a surface, we prove that

We establish analogous estimates in the setting of definite quaternion algebras.

In this paper, we investigate the twisted GGP conjecture for certain tempered representations using the theta correspondence and establish some special cases, namely when the L-parameter of the unitary group is the sum of conjugate-dual characters of the appropriate sign.

We introduce a new invariant, the conductor exponent, of a generic irreducible Casselman–Wallach representation of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(F)$, where F is an archimedean local field, that quantifies the extent to which this representation may be ramified. We also determine a distinguished vector, the newform, occurring with multiplicity one in this representation, with the complexity of this vector measured in a natural way by the conductor exponent. Finally, we show that the newform is a test vector for $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ and $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_{n - 1}$ Rankin–Selberg integrals when the second representation is unramified. This theory parallels an analogous nonarchimedean theory due to Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika; combined, this completes a global theory of newforms for automorphic representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ over number fields. By-products of the proofs include new proofs of Stade’s formulæ and a new resolution of the test vector problem for archimedean Godement–Jacquet zeta integrals.

Let $E/F$ be a quadratic unramified extension of non-archimedean local fields and $\mathbb H$ a simply connected semisimple algebraic group defined and split over F. We establish general results (multiplicities, test vectors) on ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$. For discrete series Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$, we prove a numerical criterion of ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinction. As an application, we classify the ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished discrete series representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$ corresponding to degree $1$ characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra.

The aim of the present paper is to derive effective discrepancy estimates for the distribution of rational points on general semisimple algebraic group varieties, in general families of subsets and at arbitrarily small scales. We establish mean-square, almost sure and uniform estimates for the discrepancy with explicit error bounds. We also prove an analogue of W. Schmidt's theorem, which establishes effective almost sure asymptotic counting of rational solutions to Diophantine inequalities in the Euclidean space. We formulate and prove a version of it for rational points on the group variety, with an effective bound which in some instances can be expected to be the best possible.

In this paper we take up the classical sup-norm problem for automorphic forms and view it from a new angle. Given a twist minimal automorphic representation $\pi$ we consider a special small $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_p)$-type V in $\pi$ and prove global sup-norm bounds for an average over an orthonormal basis of V. We achieve a non-trivial saving when the dimension of V grows.

Quaternionic automorphic representations are one attempt to generalize to other groups the special place holomorphic modular forms have among automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_2$. Here, we use ‘hyperendoscopy’ techniques to develop a general trace formula and understand them on an arbitrary group. Then we specialize this general formula to study quaternionic automorphic representations on the exceptional group $G_2$, eventually getting an analog of the Eichler–Selberg trace formula for classical modular forms. We finally use this together with some techniques of Chenevier, Renard and Taïbi to compute dimensions of spaces of level-$1$ quaternionic representations. On the way, we prove a Jacquet–Langlands-style result describing them in terms of classical modular forms and automorphic representations on the compact-at-infinity form $G_2^c$.

The main technical difficulty is that the quaternionic discrete series that quaternionic automorphic representations are defined in terms of do not satisfy a condition of being ‘regular’. A real representation theory argument shows that regularity miraculously does not matter for specifically the case of quaternionic discrete series.

We hope that the techniques and shortcuts highlighted in this project are of interest in other computations about discrete-at-infinity automorphic representations on arbitrary reductive groups instead of just classical ones.

We prove the existence of $\mathrm {GSpin}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations corresponding to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of certain quasi-split forms of ${\mathrm {GSO}}_{2n}$ under the local hypotheses that there is a Steinberg component and that the archimedean parameters are regular for the standard representation. This is based on the cohomology of Shimura varieties of abelian type, of type $D^{\mathbb {H}}$, arising from forms of ${\mathrm {GSO}}_{2n}$. As an application, under similar hypotheses, we compute automorphic multiplicities, prove meromorphic continuation of (half) spin L-functions and improve on the construction of ${\mathrm {SO}}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations by removing the outer automorphism ambiguity.

We generalize bounds of Liu–Wan–Xiao for slopes in eigencurves for definite unitary groups of rank $2$ to slopes in eigenvarieties for definite unitary groups of any rank. We show that for a definite unitary group of rank $n$, the Newton polygon of the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ Hecke operator has exact growth rate $x^{1+2/{n(n-1)}}$, times a constant proportional to the distance of the weight from the boundary of weight space. The proof goes through the classification of forms associated to principal series representations. We also give a consequence for the geometry of these eigenvarieties over the boundary of weight space.

Let K be a finite extension of the p-adic field ${\mathbb {Q}}_p$ of degree d, let ${{\mathbb {F}}\,\!{}}$ be a finite field of characteristic p and let ${\overline {{D}}}$ be an n-dimensional pseudocharacter in the sense of Chenevier of the absolute Galois group of K over the field ${{\mathbb {F}}\,\!{}}$. For the universal mod p pseudodeformation ring ${\overline {R}{{\phantom {\overline {\overline m}}}}^{\operatorname {univ}}_{{{\overline {{D}}}}}}$ of ${\overline {{D}}}$, we prove the following: The ring $\overline R_{{\overline {{D}}}}^{\mathrm {ps}}$ is equidimensional of dimension $dn^2+1$. Its reduced quotient ${\overline {R}{{\phantom {\overline {\overline m}}}}^{\operatorname {univ}}_{{{\overline {{D}}},{\operatorname {red}}}}}$ contains a dense open subset of regular points x whose associated pseudocharacter ${D}_x$ is absolutely irreducible and nonspecial in a certain technical sense that we shall define. Moreover, we will characterize in most cases when K does not contain a p-th root of unity the singular locus of ${\mathrm {Spec}}\ {\overline {R}{{\phantom {\overline {\overline m}}}}^{\operatorname {univ}}_{{{\overline {{D}}}}}}$. Similar results were proved by Chenevier for the generic fiber of the universal pseudodeformation ring ${R{{\phantom {\overline {m}}}}^{\operatorname {univ}}_{{{\overline {D}}}}}$ of ${\overline {{D}}}$.
