We prove that any {0,1 }-preserving homomorphism of finite distributive lattices can be realized as the restriction of the congruence relations of a finite planar lattice with no nontrivial automorphisms to an ideal of that lattice, where this ideal also has no nontrivial automorphisms. We also prove that any {0,1 }-preserving homomorphism of finite distributive lattices with more than one element and any homomorphism of groups can be realized, simultaneously, as the restriction of the congruence relations and, respectively, the restriction of the automorphisms of a lattice L to those of an ideal of L; if the groups are both finite, then so is the lattice L.

We consider the set (of homotopy classes) of co-H-structures on a Moore space M(G,n), where G is an abelian group and n is an integer ≥ 2. It is shown that for n > 2 the set has one element and for n = 2 the set is in one-one correspondence with Ext(G, G ⊗ G). We make a detailed investigation of the co-H-structures on M(G, 2) in the case G = ℤm, the integers mod m. We give a specific indexing of the co-H-structures on M(ℤm, 2) and of the homotopy classes of maps from M(ℤm, 2) to M(ℤn, 2) by means of certain standard homotopy elements. In terms of this indexing we completely determine the co-H-maps from M{ℤm, 2) to M(ℤn, 2) for each co-H-structure on M(ℤm, 2) and on M(ℤn, 2). This enables us to describe the action of the group of homotopy equivalences of M(ℤn, 2) on the set of co-H-structures of M(ℤm, 2). We prove that the action is transitive. From this it follows that if m is odd, all co-H-structures on M(ℤm, 2) are associative and commutative, and if m is even, all co-H-structures on M(ℤm, 2) are associative and non-commutative.

It is known that the Dickson polynomial of the second kind permutes the elements of the finite prime field (p odd) when n + 1 = ±2 to each of the moduli and . Based on numerical evidence it has been conjectured that these congruences are necessary for the polynomial to permute . The conjecture is established here by a new method

Define dx to be the codimension of the top nonvanishing homology group of the manifold X with coefficients in 2. We investigate homogeneous spaces X := G/H, where G is a connected complex Lie group and H is a closed complex subgroup for which dx = 1,2 and O(X) ≠ ℂ. There exists a fibration π: G/H → G/U such that G/U is holomorphically separable and π*(O(G/U)) = O(G/H), see [11]. We prove the following. If dx = 1, then F := U/H is compact and connected and Y :=G/U is an affine cone with its vertex removed. If dx = 2, then either F is connected with dF = 1 and Y is an affine cone with its vertex removed, or F is compact and connected and dy = 2, where Y is ℂ, the affine quadric Q2, ℙ2 — Q (with Q a quadric curve) or a homogeneous holomorphic * -bundle over an affine cone minus its vertex which is itself an algebraic principal bundle or which admits a two-to-one covering that is.

Let V be an irreducible nonsingular algebraic surface, Y ⊂ V be an algebraic curve and P a point of Y. Suppose a sign distribution is given locally in a neighbourhood of P on some connected components of V — Y. We give an algorithmic criterion to decide whether this sign distribution is induced by a regular function or not. As an application, this criterion enables one to decide whether two semialgebraic sets can be locally separated or not.

If the Hodge *-operator on the L2-cohomology of Kuga fiber varieties is algebraic, then the Hodge conjecture is true for all abelian varieties.

A function f analytic in the unit disk D is said to be strongly uniformly continuous hyperbolically, or SUCH, on a set E ⊂ D if for each ∊ > 0 there exists a δ > 0 such that |f(z) — f(z')| < ∊ whenever z and z' are points in E and the hyperbolic distance between z and z' is less than δ. We show that f is a Bloch function in D if and only if |f| is SUCH in D. A function f is said to be additive automorphic in D relative to a Fuchsian group F if, for each γ ∊ Γ, there exists a constant Aγ such that f(γ(z)) =f(z) + Aγ. We show that if an analytic function f is additive automorphic in D relative to a Fuchsian group Γ, where Γ is either finitely generated or if the fundamental region F of Γ has the right kind of structure, and if |f| is SUCH in F, then f is a Bloch function. We show by example that some restrictions on Γ are needed.

We consider the location of zeros of four related classes of polynomials, one of which is the class of chromatic polynomials of graphs. All of these polynomials are generating functions of combinatorial interest. Extensive calculations indicate that these polynomials often have only real zeros, and we give a variety of theoretical results which begin to explain this phenomenon. In the course of the investigation we prove a number of interesting combinatorial identities and also give some new sufficient conditions for a polynomial to have only real zeros.

Here ‖ . ‖ is the supremum norm either on [—1, 1] or on {|z| ≤ 1}. We do this by showing that, in the interval case, for each m and n, the n-th Chebyshev polynomial is extremal. This extends work of Gel'fond, Mahler, Granville, Boyd and others. A number of variants of this problem are also considered.

Two Steiner triple systems (V, 𝓑) and (V, 𝓓) are orthogonal if they have no triples in common, and if for every two distinct intersecting triples {x,y,z} and {x, y, z} of 𝓑, the two triples {x,y,a} and {u, v, b} in (𝓓 satisfy a ≠ b. It is shown here that if v ≡ 1,3 (mod 6), v ≥ 7 and v ≠ 9, a pair of orthogonal Steiner triple systems of order v exist. This settles completely the question of their existence posed by O'Shaughnessy in 1968.

In this paper we show that any system of equations over a free nilpotent group of class c is either unitary or miliary. In fact, such a system either has a most general solution (akin to the most general solution of a system of linear dipohantine equations), or every solution has a proper generalization. In principle we provide an algorithm for determining whether or not a most general solution exists, and exhibiting it if it does.

A Lie algebra is called a Heisenberg algebra if its centre coincides with its derived algebra and is one-dimensional. When is infinite-dimensional, Kac, Kazhdan, Lepowsky, and Wilson have proved that -modules that satisfy certain conditions are direct sums of a canonical irreducible submodule. This is an algebraic analogue of the Stone-von Neumann theorem. In this paper, we extract quantum Heisenberg algebras, q(), from the quantum affine algebras whose vertex representations were constructed by Frenkel and Jing. We introduce the canonical irreducible q()-module Mq and a class Cq of q()-modules that are shown to have the Stone-von Neumann property. The only restriction we place on the complex number q is that it is not a square root of 1. If q1 and q2 are not roots of unity, or are both primitive m-th roots of unity, we construct an explicit isomorphism between q1() and q2(). If q1 is a primitive m-th root of unity, m odd, q2 a primitive 2m-th or a primitive 4m-th root of unity, we also construct an explicit isomorphism between q1() and q2().

Let G be an almost simple complex algebraic group defined over R, and let G(R) be the group of real points of G. We enumerate the G(R)-conjugacy classes of maximal R-tori of G. Each of these conjugacy classes is also a single G(R)˚-conjugacy class, where G(R)˚ is the identity component of G(R), viewed as a real Lie group. As a consequence we also obtain a new and short proof of the Kostant-Sugiura's theorem on conjugacy classes of Cartan subalgebras in simple real Lie algebras.

A connected real Lie group P is said to be weakly exponential (w.e.) if the image of its exponential map is dense in P. This concept was introduced in [HM] where also the question of identifying all w.e. almost simple real Lie groups was raised. By using a theorem of A. Borel and our classification of maximal R-tori we answer the above question when P is of the form G(R)˚.

We study path properties of kernel generated two-time parameter, not necessarily stationary, Gaussian processes. We establish large deviation results for some increments of these processes and use these results to prove some of their moduli of continuity and other path properties.

In this paper, we study the restriction of irreducible representations of the group SO2n+1 × SO2m to a spherical subgroup.

This paper considers Hilbert C*-bimodules, a slight generalization of imprimitivity bimodules which were introduced by Rieffel [20]. Brown, Green, and Rieffel [7] showed that every imprimitivity bimodule X can be embedded into a certain C*-algebra L, called the linking algebra of X. We consider arbitrary embeddings of Hilbert C*-bimodules into C*-algebras; i.e. we describe the relative position of two arbitrary hereditary C*-algebras of a C*-algebra, in an analogy with Dixmier's description [10] of the relative position of two subspaces of a Hilbert space.

The main result of this paper (Theorem 4.3) is taken from the doctoral dissertation of the third author [22], although the proof here follows a different approach. In Section 1 we set out the definitions and basic properties (mostly folklore) of Hilbert C*-bimodules. In Section 2 we show how every quasi-multiplier gives rise to an embedding of a bimodule. In Section 3 we show that , the enveloping C*-algebra of the C*-algebraA with its product perturbed by a positive quasi-multiplier , is isomorphic to the closure (Proposition 3.1). Section 4 contains the main theorem (4.3), and in Section 5 we explain the analogy with the relative position of two subspaces of a Hilbert spaces and present some complements.

In this paper we construct higher two-torsion elements of all orders in the symplectic cobordism ring. We begin by constructing higher torsion elements in the symplectic cobordism ring with singularities using a geometric approach to the Adams- Novikov spectral sequence in terms of cobordism with singularities. Then we show how these elements determine particular elements of higher torsion in the symplectic cobordism ring.

The usual super-Brownian motion is a measure-valued process that arises as a high density limit of a system of branching Brownian particles in which the branching mechanism is critical. In this work we consider analogous processes that model the evolution of a system of two such populations in which there is inter-species competition or predation.

We first consider a competition model in which inter-species collisions may result in casualties on both sides. Using a Girsanov approach, we obtain existence and uniqueness of the appropriate martingale problem in one dimension. In two and three dimensions we establish existence only. However, we do show that, in three dimensions, any solution will not be absolutely continuous with respect to the law of two independent super-Brownian motions. Although the supports of two independent super-Brownian motions collide in dimensions four and five, we show that there is no solution to the martingale problem in these cases.

We next study a prédation model in which collisions only affect the "prey" species. Here we can show both existence and uniqueness in one, two and three dimensions. Again, there is no solution in four and five dimensions. As a tool for proving uniqueness, we obtain a representation of martingales for a super-process as stochastic integrals with respect to the related orthogonal martingale measure.

We also obtain existence and uniqueness for a related single population model in one dimension in which particles are killed at a rate proportional to the local density. This model appears as a limit of a rescaled contact process as the range of interaction goes to infinity.
