In recent years dedicated observations have uncovered star formation at extremely low rates in dwarf galaxies, tidal tails, ram-pressure stripped gas clouds, and the outskirts of galactic disks. At the same time, numerical simulations of galaxy evolution have advanced to higher spatial and mass resolutions, but have yet to account for the underfilling of the uppermost mass bins of stellar initial mass function (IMF) at low star-formation rates. In such situations, simulations may simply scale down the IMF, without realizing that this unrealistically results in fractions of massive stars, along with fractions of massive star feedback energy (e.g., radiation and SNII explosions). Not properly accounting for such parameters has consequences for the self-regulation of star formation, the energetics of galaxies, as well as for the evolution of chemical abundances. Here we present numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies with low star-formation rates allowing for two extreme cases of the IMF: a “filled” case with fractional massive stars vs. a truncated IMF, at which the IMF is built bottom-up until the gas reservoir allows the formation of a last single star at an uppermost mass. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the different effects on galaxy evolution with respect to self-regulation, feedback, and chemistry. The case of a stochastic sampled IMF is situated somewhere in between these extremes.

The recent detection of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone of Proxima Centauri, Trappist-1, and many other nearby M-type stars (which consist some 75% of the stars) has led to speculations, whether liquid water and life actually exist on these planets. Defining the bio-habitable zone, where liquid water and complex organic molecules can survive on at least part of the planetary surface, we suggest that planets orbiting M-type stars may have life-supporting conditions for a wide range of atmospheric properties (Wandel2018). We extend this analysis to synchronously orbiting planets of K- and G-type stars and discuss the implications for the evolution and sustaining of life on planets of M- to G-type stars, in analogy to Earth.

This review examines observations of magnetic fields in molecular clouds, that is, at spatial scales ranging from tens to tenths of parsecs and densities up to hundreds of particles per cubic centimetre. I will briefly summarize the techniques for observing and mapping magnetic fields in molecular clouds. I will review important examples of observational results obtained using each technique and their implications for our understanding of the role of the magnetic field in molecular cloud formation and evolution. Finally, I will briefly discuss the prospects for advances in our observational capabilities with telescopes and instruments now beginning operation or under construction.

MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) is an astronomical mission onboard the International Space Station. It started observations in August 2009. The Gas Slit Camera of MAXI is sensitive to X-rays in the energy range 2–30 keV. Most of the sky is scanned every 90 min with the orbital revolution of the ISS. With this unbiased monitoring, MAXI has detected numerous outbursts from known and unknown X-ray sources. MAXI discovered 18 X-ray novæ in seven years, including seven neutron star binaries, six black hole binaries (+candidates) and four unidentified sources. Other results include detections of superluminous stellar flares, a super-Eddington luminous flare from a white dwarf+Be Star binary near the SMC, and monitoring of recurrent outbursts from Be neutron-star binaries. Variations in X-ray-bright AGNs such as Cen A and Mrk 421 have been also monitored. This talk presented the highlights of the MAXI observations of variable sources, including the search for X-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave events.

Most of the physical processes driving the TP-AGB evolution are not yet fully understood and they need to be modelled with parameterised descriptions. We present the results of the on-going calibration of the TP-AGB phase based on a complete sample of AGB stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SAGE-SMC survey). We computed large grids of TP-AGB models with several combinations of third dredge-up and mass-loss prescriptions with the COLIBRI code. The SMC AGB population is modelled with the population synthesis code TRILEGAL according to the space-resolved star formation history derived with the deep photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds. We put quantitative constraints on the efficiencies of the third dredge-up and mass loss by requiring the models to reproduce the star counts and the luminosity functions of the observed Oxygen-, Carbon-rich and extreme-AGB stars and we investigate the impact of the best-fitting prescriptions on the chemical yields.

An abundance of information about the magnetic (B) fields of relativistic AGN jets has been obtained through radio polarization observations made on a wide range of scales, from the parsec scales probed by Very Long Baseline Interferometry to the kiloparsec scales probed by instruments such as the the Jansky Very Large Array and e-MERLIN. The observed radio emission is synchrotron radiation, for which the linear polarization angles in optically thin regions is orthogonal to the local synchrotron B fields. The characteristic B field structures observed for these jets on parsec scales are described. A key question is whether B field structures observed in particular AGN jets come about primarily due to “global” effects such as the intrinsic B field of the jet itself, which is expected to be helical, or local phenomena such as shocks, shear and bending of the jets. Observational criteria that can be used to try to distinguish between various possible origins for observed B field structures are described. There is now considerable evidence that the relativistic jets of AGNs do indeed carry helical B fields, with the observed polarization also sometimes appreciably influenced by local effects. Patterns seen in the helical B field components, indicated for example by Faraday rotation observations, provide unique information about the processes involved in the generation of these helical B fields. The collected observations on parsec and kiloparsec scales provide weighty evidence that an important role is played by the action of a cosmic “battery” that acts to generate an inward current along the jet axis and an outward current in a more extended region surrounding the jet.

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in various scales of astronomical objects, and they are considered as playing significant roles from star to galaxy formations. However, the role of the magnetic fields in star forming regions is less well understood because conventional optical polarimetry is hampered by heavy extinction by dust. We have been conducting extensive near-infrared polarization survey of various star-forming regions from low- and intermediate-mass to high-mass star-forming regions, using IRSF/SIRPOL in South Africa. Not only linear but also circular polarizations have been measured for more than a dozen of regions. Both linear and circular polarimetric observations at near-infrared wavelengths are useful tools to study the magnetic fields in star forming regions, although infrared circular polarimetry has been less explored so far. In this presentation, we summarize our results of the near-infrared polarization survey of star forming regions and its comparison with recent submillimeter polarimetry results. Such multi-wavelength approaches can be extended to the polarimetry using ALMA, SPICA in future, and others. We also present our recent results of the first near-infrared imaging polarimetry of young stellar objects in the Circinus molecular cloud, which has been less studied but a very intriguing cluster containing numerous signs of active low-mass star formation.

The search for life in the Universe is intertwined with studies of extrasolar planets aimed at identifying and understanding habitable rocky planets, including those similar in size, bulk composition, planetary environment, and evolution to Earth. The past five years have seen dramatic progress in our understanding of the small (1–4 REarth) planet population. Here we briefly review key results on the occurrence rates of small planets, the first evidence for compositional diversity of these worlds, early results on the characterization of their atmospheres, and the progress toward finding and interpreting potentially habitable planets orbiting the closest stars. We also briefly highlight next steps in furthering our understanding of the origins and properties of habitable worlds.

High-density cusps of compact remnants are expected to form around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei via dynamical friction and two-body relaxation. Due to the high density, binaries in orbit around the SMBH can frequently undergo close encounters with compact remnants from the cusp. This can affect the gravitational wave merger rate of compact binaries in galactic nuclei. We investigated this process by means of high accuracy few-body simulations, performed with a novel Monte Carlo approach. We find that, around a SgrA*-like SMBH, three-body encounters increase the number of mergers by a factor of 3. This occurs because close encounters can reorient binaries with respect to their orbital plane around the SMBH, increasing the number of Kozai-Lidov induced mergers. We obtain a binary black hole merger rate of ГMW = 1.6 × 10−6 yr−1 per Milky Way-like nucleus.

. The INTEGRAL satellite has revealed a previously hidden population of absorbed High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) hosting supergiant (SG) stars. Among them, IGR J16320–4751 is a classical system intrinsically obscured by its environment, with a column density of ~1023 cm-2, more than an order of magnitude higher than the interstellar absorption along the line of sight. It is composed of a neutron star (NS) rotating with a spin period of ~1300 s, accreting matter from the stellar wind of an O8I SG, with an orbital period of ~9 days. We analyzed all existing archival XMM- Newton and Swift/BAT observations of the obscured HMXB IGR J16320–4751 performing a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the source along its orbit. Using a typical model for the supergiant wind profile, we simultaneously fitted the evolution of the hard X-ray emission and intrinsic column density along the full orbit of the NS around the SG, which allowed us to constrain physical and geometrical parameters of the binary system.

eROSITA (the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) onboard the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma mission will perform a deep all-sky X-ray survey. During the first four years of operation the satellite will scan the entire sky every once every half year, visiting any position between 8 and 500 times. The eROSITA scanning strategy will test a wide range of times-scales, from seconds to years, and thus provide a powerful window into the X-ray transient and variable sky. This contribution summarised the key science opportunities for time-domain studies with eROSITA, and presented strategies for finding transients in the all-sky survey data.

The MUSE TIMER Survey has obtained high signal and high spatial resolution integral-field spectroscopy data of the inner ~ 6×6 kpc of 21 nearby massive disc galaxies. This allows studies of the stellar kinematics of the central regions of massive disc galaxies that are unprecedented in spatial resolution. We confirm previous predictions from numerical and hydrodynamical simulations of the effects of bars and inner bars on stellar and gaseous kinematics, and also identify box/peanuts via kinematical signatures in mildly and moderately inclined galaxies, including a box/peanut in a face-on inner bar. In 20/21 galaxies we find inner discs and show that their properties are fully consistent with the bar-driven secular evolution picture for their formation. In addition, we show that these inner discs have, in the region where they dominate, larger rotational support than the main galaxy disc, and discuss how their stellar population properties can be used to estimate when in cosmic history the main bar formed. Our results are compared with photometric studies in the context of the nature of galaxy bulges and we show that inner discs are identified in image decompositions as photometric bulges with exponential profiles (i.e., Sérsic indices near unity).

We theoretically investigate the impact of feedback and its metallicity dependence in massive star formation from prestellar cores at all metallicity range. We include the feedback by MHD disk winds, radiation pressure, and photoevaporation solving the evolution of protostars and accretion flows self-consistently. Interestingly, we find that the feedback does not set the upper mass limit of stellar birth mass at any metallicity. At the solar metallicity, the MHD disk wind is the dominant feedback to set the star formation efficiencies (SFEs) from the prestellar cores similar to low-mass star formation. The SFE is found to be lower at lower surface density environment. The photoevaporation becomes significant at the low metallicity of Z < 10−2 Z⊙. Considering this efficient photoevaporation, we conclude that the IMF slope is steeper, i.e., massive stars are rarer at the extremely metal-poor environment of 10−5 − 10−3Z⊙. Our study raises a question on the common assumption of the universal IMF with a truncated at 100M⊙. Since the total feedback strength in the cluster/galaxy scale is sensitive to the number fraction of massive stars, the re-evaluations of IMF at various environments are necessary.

Certain types of large amplitude AGB variable are proving to be powerful distance indicators that will rival Cepheids in the James Webb Space Telescope era of high precision infrared photometry. These are predominantly found in old populations and have low mass progenitors. At the other end of the AGB mass-scale, large amplitude variables, particularly those undergoing hot bottom burning, are the most luminous representatives of their population. These stars are < 1 Gyr old, are often losing mass copiously and are vital to our understanding of the integrated light of distant galaxies as well as to chemical enrichment. However, the evolution of such very luminous AGB variables is rapid and remains poorly understood. Here I discuss recent infrared observations of both low- and intermediate-mass Mira variables in the Local Group and beyond.

The primary objectives of the ExoplANETS-A project are to: establish new knowledge on exoplanet atmospheres; establish new insight on influence of the host star on the planet atmosphere; disseminate knowledge, using online, web-based platforms. The project, funded under the EU’s Horizon-2020 programme, started in January 2018 and has a duration ∼3 years. We present an overview of the project, the activities concerning the host stars and some early results on the host stars.

Different accretion regimes onto magnetized NSs in HMXBs are considered: wind-fed supersonic (Bondi) regime at high accretion rates <math/> g s-1, subsonic settling regime at lower <math/> and supercritical disc accretion during Roche lobe overflow. In wind-fed stage, NSs in HMXBs reach equilibrium spin periods P* proportional to binary orbital period Pb. At supercritical accretion stage, the system may appear as a pulsating ULX. Population synthesis of Galactic HMXBs using standard assumptions on the binary evolution and NS formation is presented. Comparison of the model P* – Pb (the Corbet diagram), P* – Lx and Pb – Lx distributions with those for the observed HMXBs (including Be X-ray binaries) and pulsating ULXs suggests the importance of the reduction of P* in non-circular orbits, explaining the location of Be X-ray binaries in the model Corbet diagram, and the universal parameters of pulsating ULXs depending only on the NS magnetic fields.

According to earlier investigations by Turner and co-authors, P Cygni could be a member of a hypothetical, sparsely populated open cluster. The star lies near the east boundary of this hypothetical cluster. There is another known open cluster, IC 4996, in the vicinity of P Cygni. The same authors believe that the above mentioned two clusters are connected to each other and they could represent a double cluster. As P Cygni is a hypergiant and consequently has very strong and variable stellar wind, so a cluster membership can enable us to determine the age, distance, and reddening of the star relatively precisely. We used new data of different catalogues, for example, PPMXL and Gaia and tried to resolve the problem.

We investigate how the properties of spiral arms relate to other fundamental galaxy properties. To this end, we use previously published measurements of those properties, and our own measurements of arm-interarm luminosity contrasts for a large sample of galaxies, using 3.6μm images from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies. Flocculent galaxies are clearly distinguished from other spiral arm classes, especially by their lower stellar mass and surface density. Multi-armed and grand-design galaxies are similar in most of their fundamental parameters, excluding some bar properties and the bulge-to-total luminosity ratio. Based on these results, we discuss dense, classical bulges as a necessary condition for standing spiral wave modes in grand-design galaxies. We further find a strong correlation between bulge-to-total ratio and bar contrast, and a weaker correlation between arm and bar contrasts.

This talk presented a summary of our study of different types of long-term variability in the high-mass X-ray binary LMC X-4, by taking advantage of more than 43 years of measurements in the X-ray domain. In particular, we investigated the 30-day cycle of modulation of the X-ray emission from the source (super-orbital or precessional variability), and refined the orbital period and its first derivative. We showed that the precession period in the time-interval 1991–2015 is near its equilibrium value of Psup = 30.370 days, while the observed historical changes in the phase of this variability can be interpreted in terms of the ‘red noise’ model. We obtained an analytical law from which the precession phase can be determined to within 5% throughout the entire time-interval under consideration. Our analysis revealed for the first time that the source is displaying near-periodic variations of its spin period, on a time-scale of roughly 6.8 years, thus making LMC X-4 one of the (few) known binary systems that show remarkable long-term spin–torque reversals.
