“Deep learning” is finding more and more applications everywhere, and astronomy is not an exception. This talk described the application of convolutional neural networks to time-domain astronomy, specifically to light-curves of sources. The work that is discussed is based on a published paper to which reference can be made for more detail. The talk finished with a note cautioning new practitioners about the pitfalls lurking in out-of-the-box use of deep-learning techniques.

Boxiness associated with the morphology of the central parts of bars, is a feature usually encountered in the edge-on profiles of galaxies, or galactic models. However, there are cases where “boxy” isophotes are observed also in the central parts of nearly face-on bars. I summarize here some dynamical mechanisms that support boxy orbits in the central bar regions on the equatorial plane of the disks, or orbits with boxy projections on it. Such orbits could describe the dynamics of face – on boxy “bulges”.

The second (after Pluto) plausible target object for the New Horizons mission is 2014 MU69. It is a classical TNO, a primordial contact binary. Identifying any material in the vicinities of a target object is of an especial concern for planning cosmic fly-byes, as it is hazardous for a space probe. Luckily, no such material has been reported for MU69 up to now. The point of our report is that this lucky absence is just a dynamical consequence of the physical nature of MU69. Spinning gravitating dumbbells create zones of dynamical chaos around them, and this has a clearing effect: any material put in orbits around a rotating dumbbell (e.g., any material ejected from its surface) cannot be long-lived in such zones; it either escapes into space, or returns to the parent body’s surface. As the orbiting matter is removed in this way, a spinning gravitating dumbbell clears its vicinities. We show that MU69 is able to create such a clearing, making itself a safe and hospitable target for a space mission. Therefore, the guest probe is expected to be safe on arrival.

We analyze the hard X-ray properties of five radio-loud active galactic nuclei with peculiar spectral shape. High-energy exponential cut-offs (HEC) in their hard X-ray 3-500 keV spectra are too high for radio loud AGNs (above 100 keV) or even absent.The probable reason of such visible spectral “peculiarity” can be due to the “jet contamination”, i.e we see some mixture of the jet and nuclear emission, but not pure emission of the innermost nucleus. Here we try to estimate the jet and nuclear components of the spectra for a sample of “peculiar” RL AGNs to find out whether these are real or fake features.

Red Supergiant Stars (RSGs) are important probes of stellar and chemical evolution in star-forming environments. They represent the brightest near-IR stellar components of external galaxies and probe the most recent stellar population to provide robust, independent abundance estimates. The Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy, NGC6822, is a reasonably isolated galaxy with an interesting structure and turbulent history. Using RSGs as chemical abundance probes, we estimate metallicities in the central region of NGC6822, finding a suggestion of a metallicity gradient (in broad agreement with nebular tracers), however, this requires further study for confirmation. With intermediate resolution Multi-object spectroscopy (from e.g. KMOS, EMIR, MOSFIRE) combined with state-of-the-art stellar model atmospheres, we demonstrate how RSGs can be used to estimate stellar abundances in external galaxies. In this context, we compare stellar and nebular abundance tracers in NGC 6822 and by combining stellar and nebular tracers we estimate an abundance gradient of −0.18 ± 0.05 dex/kpc.

The X-Shooter Spectral Library (XSL) contains more than 800 spectra of stars across the color-magnitude diagram, that extend from near-UV to near-IR wavelengths (320-2450 nm). We summarize properties of the spectra of O-rich Long Period Variables in the XSL, such as phase-related features, and we confront the data with synthetic spectra based on static and dynamical stellar atmosphere models. We discuss successes and remaining discrepancies, keeping in mind the applications to population synthesis modeling that XSL is designed for.

Translucent molecular clouds represent a vastly underexplored regime of cloud evolution in terms of the effect of the magnetic field. Their pristine nature renders them ideal for investigating the initial properties of the magnetic field, prior to the onset of star formation. Using starlight polarimetry, we map the plane-of-sky magnetic field orientation throughout 10 sq. degrees of the Polaris Flare translucent molecular cloud. We provide the first quantitative estimate of the magnetic field strength in this type of system. By combining our measurements with the high-resolution Herschel dust emission map, we find a preferred alignment between filaments and the observed magnetic field. Our results support the presence of a strong magnetic field in this system (Panopoulou et al. 2016).

The Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) scenario ascribes the multiple populations in old Galactic Globular Clusters (GGC) to episodes of star formation in the gas contaminated by the ejecta of massive AGBs and super-AGBs of a first stellar population. The mass of these AGBs (4-8 M⊙) today populate the Young Massive Clusters (YMC) of the Magellanic Clouds, where rapid rotation and its slowing down play an important role in shaping the color-magnitude diagram features. Consequently, we must reconsider whether the rotational evolution of these masses affects the yields, and whether the resulting abundances are compatible with the chemical patterns observed in GGC. We show the first results of a differential analysis, by computing the hot bottom burning evolution of non-rotating models with increased CNO-Na abundances at the second dredge-up, following the results of MESA rotational models.

Formation of resonant multi-lane patterns in circumbinary young debris disks with planets is considered in a set of representative massively simulated models. We find that the long term-stable resonant patterns are generically formed, shepherded by embedded planets. The patterns are multi-lane, i.e., they consist of several concentric rings. Statistical dependences of their parameters on the planetary parameters are recovered. Relevant additional massive simulations of planetesimal disks in systems with parameters of Kepler-16, 34, and 35 are accomplished and described. We find that co-orbital patterns generically form in systems with moderate orbital eccentricities of the binary’s and planetary orbits (like in Kepler-16 and 35 cases).

Over the years the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has offered a number of time-domain instruments that enable the user to achieve time resolution as small as milliseconds. They have been used for a wide range of applications, from binary studies with Lunar occultations, characterisation of X-ray binaries and exoplanet transits, to quasar variability. Furthermore, ESO provides a target-of-opportunity (ToO) rapid-response-mode (RRM) channel to trigger quick follow-up observations within as little delay as minutes after a transient has been detected. This talk reviewed the available time-domain observing modes and instruments at ESO, giving priority to FORS2, HAWKI and UltraCam. It described the ToO and RRM, and gave examples of the most common science cases that take advantage of those channels and capabilities.

Physical conditions and chemical abundances of two H II regions and a planetary nebula in the dIrr galaxy Leo A are presented. These determinations were performed using the direct method (Te measured) and the ONS method. We also constructed photoionization models for the three nebulae to determine the abundances and to analyse the ionizing stars. The O abundance was determined to be 12+log(O/H) = 7.4±0.2 in all cases.

Gravitational wave direct detections suggest that 30 M⊙ binary black holes (BBHs) commonly exist in the universe. One possible formation scenario of such BBHs is dynamical three-body encounters in dense star clusters. We performed a series of direct N-body simulations with a mass of 2500 and 10000 M⊙ and found a new channel for the formation of BBHs which is dominant in open clusters. In open clusters, the core-collapse time is shorter than in globular clusters, and therefore massive main-sequence (MS) binaries can form before they evolve to BHs. These MS binaries experience common envelope evolution and evolve to hard BBHs, which can merge within the Hubble time. The number of BBH mergers per unit mass obtained from our simulations reached 20–50 % of that for globular clusters, assuming an initial cluster mass function. Thus, open clusters can be a dominant formation site of hard BBHs.

We have carried out near-IR imaging polarimetry toward RCW 106 with the JHKs-simultaneous imaging polarimeter SIRPOL mounted on the IRSF 1.4m telescope at SAAO, in March and May, 2017 and January, 2018. We have observed 29 fields and covered mostly the southern part of the giant molecular cloud complex associated with the ${{\rm{H}}_\mathbb{I}}$ region RCW 106, which is located at a distance of 3.5 kpc (Moises etal 2011) and is elongated approximately in the north-south direction with a size of ∼70×15 pc. Our preliminary analysis indicates that the magnetic field seems to globally run along the complex elongation, unlike many other elongated clouds that are often reported to have their global elongations perpendicular to the magnetic fields. The RCW 106 complex consists of many small filaments or clumps. Some of such filaments seem to parallel to the magnetic fields, but some others perpendicular. Around the central part of the ${{\rm{H}}_\mathbb{I}}$ region RCW 106, the magnetic field appears to be influenced by the expansion of this ${{\rm{H}}_\mathbb{I}}$ region. Here, we present our preliminary results by comparing with the archival molecular line and far- to mid-IR data.

We presented long-term optical observations of the high mass X-ray binary system SS 433 (V1343 Aql) with a black hole component. New observations have been obtained by using the 0.6m telescope at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) in B, V, R and I filters. We aim to investigate the long-term photometric behavior of the system.

Following the discovery of the expansion of a young radio lobe associated with the bright radio source 3C 84 in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1275 using VSOP monitoring observation with duration of 3 years, we further investigated its evolution by utilizing VLBA monitoring data taken by MOJAVE project. As the results, we confirmed the expanding motion of both the southern and northern lobes, and detected side-way expanding motions for the first time. In meantime, the total flux density of the lobes are decreasing, while total flux density associated with the nuclei is significantly increasing. This cooling of the radio lobe can be well-explained with the energy loss through the adiabatic cooling.

We investigate the minor interactions of two disk galaxies with mass ratio of 10:1 in fly-by encounters that do not lead to the merging of the galaxies. In our N-body simulations, we vary only the pericenter distances to see the effect of the fly-by on the bulge of the major galaxy over the course of the trajectory. At different time steps of the evolution, we did two-dimensional fittings of disk, bulge and bar to trace the variation in the sersic index of the bulge. Our results suggest that galaxy bulges can become boxy/disky through flyby interactions of galaxies.

. We analyzed a 40-year set of multicolor photometry and a 15-year set of synoptic monitoring of SS 433 along with fragmentary spectral and radio data. This system contains a neutron star and an A3–A7 I giant. The system is found to be either close, in contact, or it has a common envelope from time to time. The A-type giant is now in transition to the dynamical mass transfer.

The SALT transient follow-up programme began in 2016 and will continue for 5 semesters (until 31 Oct 2018), with an expectation of renewal thereafter. It is currently the only SALT Large Science Programme, and was awarded ~250 ksec. per semester, with a significant fraction (60%) given for the highest priority target-of-opportunity time. The aim is to characterise and study transients across a wide range of classes, currently including (from closest to most distant) cataclysmic variables, novæ and other associated eruptive variables, low- and high-mass X-ray binaries, OGLE and Gaia transients (including tidal disruption events), super-luminous and unusual core-collapse supernovæ, kilonovæ and other candidate optical counterparts to gravitational-wave events, flaring blazars and AGN, and gamma-ray bursts. This programme currently involves four SALT partners, of which South Africa is the major contributor of time (74%) and resources and includes five institutions with over 30 co-investigators. This talk reviewed the nature of the programme and highlighted some of the results to date.

In star-forming environments, shock-compressed magnetic fields occur in cloud-cloud collisions, in molecular clouds exposed to supernova remnants (SNRs), and in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). Besides their dynamical role, they increase the cosmic ray flux above the Galactic average, and the trapped particles contribute to the heating of the shocked gas. The associated dust emission is polarized perpendicularly to the sky plane projection of the field, Bsky. In edge-on viewed shock planes, highly ordered polarization patterns are expected. In search of such a signature, the dust emission from the Orion bar (a prototypical PDR) and from a molecular cloud/SNR interface (IC443-G) was studied with a λ870μm polarimeter at the APEX (Wiesemeyer etal 2014 and references therein). While our polarization map of OMC1 confirms the hourglass shape of Bsky (e.g., Schleuning 1998, Houde etal 2004), a deep integration towards the Orion bar reveals an alignment of Bsky with the shock forming in response to the wind and to the ionizing radiation from the Trapezium cluster (Fig. 1). This structure suggests a compressed magnetic field accelerating cosmic-ray particles, a scenario proposed by [Pellegrini et al. (2009)] to explain the high excitation temperature of rotationally warm H2 and CO (Shaw et al. 2009, Peng et al. 2012, respectively).

We present the analysis of the 93 ksec Chandra ACIS–S data for the galaxy CGCG 292–057 (z = 0.054), with complex radio structure indicative of the intermittent jet activity. In order to characterize precisely the spectrum of the unresolved low-luminosity active nucleus in the source, we performed detailed MARX/PSF simulations and studied the radial profile of the source region surface brightness. In this way, we have detected an additional X-ray component extending from a few up to ∼10 kpc from the unresolved core, which could be associated with the hot gaseous medium compressed and heated (up to 0.9 keV) by the expanding inner lobes of the radio galaxy. We modeled the X-ray spectrum of the unresolved nucleus assuming various emission models, including an absorbed power-law, a power-law plus thermal emission component, and a two-temperature thermal plasma. The best fit was however obtained assuming a power-law emission scattered by a hot ionized gas, giving rise to the 6.7 keV iron line.
