This talk presented a summary of our study of different types of long-term variability in the high-mass X-ray binary LMC X-4, by taking advantage of more than 43 years of measurements in the X-ray domain. In particular, we investigated the 30-day cycle of modulation of the X-ray emission from the source (super-orbital or precessional variability), and refined the orbital period and its first derivative. We showed that the precession period in the time-interval 1991–2015 is near its equilibrium value of Psup = 30.370 days, while the observed historical changes in the phase of this variability can be interpreted in terms of the ‘red noise’ model. We obtained an analytical law from which the precession phase can be determined to within 5% throughout the entire time-interval under consideration. Our analysis revealed for the first time that the source is displaying near-periodic variations of its spin period, on a time-scale of roughly 6.8 years, thus making LMC X-4 one of the (few) known binary systems that show remarkable long-term spin–torque reversals.

The magneto hydrodynamic models of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei predict the jet power transported by the Poynting flux at the jet base, setting the correlation between the jet power and the total magnetic flux. For highly collimated jets taking the transversal structure into account allows to rewrite this correlation through the observed jet properties such as spectral flux and core shift. Applying this method we find that, for the sample of 48 sources, their jet power distribution is well peaked at the theoretically predicted level.

The evolution of galaxies is driven by the birth and death of stars. AGB stars are at the end points of their evolution and therefore their luminosities directly reflect their birth mass; this enables us to reconstruct the star formation history. These cool stars also produce dust grains that play an important role in the temperature regulation of the interstellar medium (ISM), chemistry, and the formation of planets. These stars can be resolved in all of the nearby galaxies. Therefore, the Local Group of galaxies offers us a superb near-field cosmology site. Here we can reconstruct the formation histories, and probe the structure and dynamics, of spiral galaxies, of the many dwarf satellite galaxies surrounding the Milky Way and Andromeda, and of isolated dwarf galaxies. It also offers a variety of environments in which to study the detailed processes of galaxy evolution through studying the mass-loss mechanism and dust production by cool evolved stars. In this paper, I will first review our recent efforts to identify mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in Local Group galaxies and to correlate spatial distributions of the AGB stars of different mass with galactic structures. Then, I will outline our methodology to reconstruct the star formation histories using variable pulsating AGB stars and RSGs and present the results for rates of mass–loss and dust production by pulsating AGB stars and their analysis in terms of stellar evolution and galaxy evolution.

AGNs are an inherently variable population but the physical mechanisms behind optical variability remain poorly constrained or not well understood. The advent of large archival collections of astronomical time series together with new analysis techniques is now driving systematic explorations of these phenomena. They reveal both population behaviours and individual extreme sources. This talk reviewed how the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey is transforming our knowledge of AGN behaviour, mentioning in particular the new CRTS Southern Sky Quasar Catalogue (which covers −70 < Dec < 0 down to V ∼ 19), and the potential of the Zwicky Transient Facility for further discoveries.

We present a statistical analysis of the relative orientation between the plane-of-sky magnetic field and the filaments associated with the Galactic Cold Clumps. We separated polarization parameters components of the filaments and their background using thin optical medium assumption, the filaments were detected using the Rolling Hough Transform algorithm and we separated the clump and the filament contributions in our maps. We found that in high column density environments the magnetic fields inside the filaments and in the background are less likely to be aligned with each other. This suggests a decoupling between the inner and background magnetic fields at some stage of filaments’ evolution. A preferential alignment between the filaments and their inferred magnetic fields is observed in the whole selection if the clumps’ contribution is subtracted. Interestingly, a bimodal distribution of relative orientation is observed between the filamentary structures of the clumps and the filaments’ magnetic field. Similar results are seen in a subsample of nearby filaments. The relative orientation clearly shows a transition from parallel to no preferential and perpendicular alignment depending on the volume densities of both clumps and filaments. Our results confirm a strong interplay between the magnetic field and filamentary structures during their formation and evolutionary process.

Observations of dense stellar systems such as globular clusters (GCs) are limited in resolution by the optical aberrations induced by atmospheric turbulence (atmospheric seeing). At the example of holographic speckle imaging, we now study, to which degree image reconstruction algorithms are able to remove residual aberrations from a partial adaptive optics (AO) correction, such as delivered from ground-layer AO (GLAO) systems. Simultaneously, we study, how such algorithms benefit from being applied to pre-corrected instead of natural point-spread functions (PSFs). We find that using partial AO corrections already lowers the demands on the holography reference star by ∼3 mag, what makes more fields accessible for this technique, and also that the discrete integration times may be chosen about 2–3× longer, since the effective wavefront evolution is slowed down by removing the perturbation power.

. We studied the eclipsing ultraluminous X-ray source CG X-1 in the Circinus galaxy, re-examining two decades of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The short binary period (7.21 hr) and high luminosity (LX ≈ 1040 erg s-1) suggest a Wolf-Rayet donor, close to filling its Roche lobe; this is the most luminous Wolf-Rayet X-ray binary known to-date, and a potential progenitor of a gravitational-wave merger. We phase-connect all observations, and show an intriguing dipping pattern in the X-ray lightcurve, variable from orbit to orbit. We interpret the dips as partial occultation of the X-ray emitting region by fast-moving clumps of Compton-thick gas. We suggest that the occulting clouds are fragments of the dense shell swept-up by a bow shock ahead of the compact object, as it orbits in the wind of the more massive donor.

It is still a mystery why only a small fraction of quasars contain relativistic jets. A strong magnetic field is a necessary ingredient for jet formation. Gas falls from the Bondi radius RB nearly freely to the circularization radius Rc, and a thin accretion disk is formed within Rc We suggest that the external weak magnetic field threading interstellar medium is substantially enhanced in this region, and the magnetic field at Rc can be sufficiently strong to drive outflows from the disk if the angular velocity of the gas is low at RB. In this case, the magnetic field is efficiently dragged in the disk, because most angular momentum of the disk is removed by the outflows that lead to a significantly high radial velocity. The strong magnetic field formed in this way may accelerate jets in the region near the black hole, either by the Blandford-Payne or/and Blandford-Znajek mechanisms. If the angular velocity of the circumnuclear gas is low, the field advection in the thin disk is inefficient, and it will appear as a radio-quiet (RQ) quasar.

Amongst the most tantalizing questions in science are those relating to the life issue. What is it, how did it emerge, does it exist beyond our planet? In this review some central themes that have governed this debate over past decades will be described. Through the newly proposed Persistence Principle, it is argued that material stability can be achieved through either kinetic or thermodynamic means, opening up the possibility for life to be understood as a kinetic, rather than a thermodynamic, phenomenon. That insight allows the evolutionary process from inanimate to animate to be understood as one that was initiated with the emergence of a kinetically stable prebiotic replicative chemical system. Such a chemical system, once established, was able to evolve and complexify toward increasingly stable replicative forms, toward life. With a clearer understanding of what life is, the search for life in the universe can become more clearly directed.

The earliest generations of stars were produced in galaxies at high redshift. The physical conditions in which these stars formed, produced heavy elements and dust, and subsequently ended their life cycles, however, are vastly different from those in the Milky Way. Nearby low metal-abundance galaxies provide critical laboratories within which it is possible to observe conditions similar to those at high redshift, shedding light on the lifecycle of dust and metals in the early Universe. Does the process of star formation change at low metallicity? How did galaxies in the early Universe produce significant amounts of dust without the elapsed time necessary for stars to evolve to the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase and contribute via mass loss? Here we present work cataloging dust-producing sources in the nearby metal-poor galaxy NGC 6822 and outline forthcoming GTO observations of this system and the blue compact dwarf I Zw 18 with JWST.

Galaxies are observed to obey a strict set of dynamical scaling relations. We review these relations for rotationally supported disk galaxies spanning many decades in mass, surface brightness, and gas content. The behavior of these widely varied systems can be summarized with a handful of empirical laws connected by a common acceleration scale.

If biologically complex molecules as DNA were present in the extraterrestrial targets, their spectral signatures would be rather difficult to be unambiguously identified. As a matter of fact, the molecular array of a single nucleobasis will generate a tangled spectral signature. On the other hand, a part of it, e.g. bands due to the group of HNCO of guanine may have been detected but associated to smaller molecules, e.g. isocianic acid (HNCO). However, if comprised in a nucleobasis, its detection would be misinterpreted. Five key transitions were preliminarly selected for either purines and pyrimidines that should be observed together in the same target. If this happens, it may be that we are detecting the whole from its parts.

The results from high-resolution spectroscopy and accurate photometry have challenged the traditional paradigm that stars in globular clusters (GC) are simple stellar populations, rather suggesting that these structures harbor distinct groups of stars, differing in the chemical composition, particularly in the abundances of the light elements, from helium to silicon. Because this behavior is not shared by field stars, it is generally believed that some self-enrichment mechanism must have acted in GC, such that new stellar generations formed from the ashes of stars belonging to the original population. In this review, after presenting the state-of-the-art of the observations of GC stars, we discuss the possibility that the pollution of the intra-cluster medium was provided by the winds of AGB stars of initial mass above ∼3 M⊙. These objects evolve with time scales of 40 − 100 Myr and contaminate their surroundings with gas processed by p-capture nucleosynthesis, in agreement with the chemical patterns traced by GC stars.

We have constructed a chemical evolution model in order to reproduce the both metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) of red giant branch stars (RGBs) and RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) of a dwarf galaxy, simultaneously. The detailed chemical abundances of RGBs of the Local Group dwarf galaxies have been measured by spectroscopic observations. Moreover, the metallicity of RRLs of a dwarf galaxy are estimated by using the theoretical period-luminosity relations in the previous study and it is found that the mean metallicity of RRLs are lower than that of RGBs. In order to investigate the MDFs of RGBs and RRLs, we combine our chemical evolution model with the stellar evolutionally isochrones and calculate the metallicity of RGBs and RRLs, respectively. As a result, our chemical evolution model reproduces the peak metallicity of both MDFs of RGBs and RRLs of Sculptor and Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), simultaneously. Therefore, it is found that the difference of the mean metallicity between RGBs and RRLs are caused by the effects of stellar evolution. Moreover, by using the theoretical period-luminosity-metallicity relation of the RRLs, our chemical evolution model determines that the distance modulus of Sculptor and Fornax dSphs are 19.68 ± 0.09 and ${20.81^{+0.13}_{-0.11}}$, respectively. However, our model underestimates the number of metal-rich RRLs ([Fe/H] > −1.5) of Fornax dSph. This result suggests that the mass-loss rate of metal-rich RGBs would be larger than that of metal-poor RGBs.

In galactic nuclei (AGN), the kinetic energy flux of the jet may exceed the bolometric luminosity of the disk a few orders of magnitude. At the “cold” accretion the radiation from the disk is suppressed because the wind from the disk carries out almost all the angular momentum and the gravitational energy of the accreted material. We calculate an unavoidable radiation from such a disk and the ratio of the kinetic-to-bolometric luminosity from a super massive black hole in framework of the paradigm of the optically thick α-disk of Shakura & Sunyaev. The results confirm that the gravitational energy of the accreted material can be the only source of energy in AGNs.

LSST will uncover a few million time-domain alerts per night with a latency of a minute. This will provide a huge discovery space, where previously undiscovered rare phenomena may be revealed. The early detection of such previously unknown events from a minimal set of measurements is critical for discovery and follow-up. Analysis methods to recognise such events are being investigated and developed. A discussion of those approaches was presented.

Evolution and the formation of bars in the galactic disks is studied in the context of Modified Gravity (MOG) by using N-body simulations. It is found that changing the value of free parameters of the model can effectively alter the strength of the bar and disk’s stability.

We investigate the spectral properties of red supergiant stars in the four RSGCs (RSGC2, RSGC3, RSGC4, RSGC5, and Alicante 10) in the Scutum-Crux arm of the Milky Way. The high-resolution (R: 45,000) near-infrared (H and K bands) spectra for 41 red supergiants were obtained using IGRINS at Gemini South telescope. The calibration of effective temperatures and gravities are derived based on the EWTi and EWCO using supergiants in IGIRNS library. The resulted temperatures and gravities are consistent with previous results. Model spectra were synthesized using derived stellar parameters from which we estimate metallicities and chemical abundances like α-elements. In our preliminary result, we find that overall four RSGCs indeed have sub-solar metallicities as already known in previous studies. The metallicity properties of RSGCs are far off the nominal metallicity trend in this region, and this suggests recent low-metallicity gas fueling into the inner disk and bulge.

. Hercules X-1 (Her X-1) was observed extensively by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) over its 17 year lifetime. Here, the archival RXTE/PCA observations of Her X-1 are analyzed with emphasis on the 35-day cycle dependence. Spectral fits are carried out and the 35-day phase dependences are characterized. The regular behaviours of the changes are interpreted in terms of the precessing accretion disk. We find that the most important variation is caused by the changing illumination of the inner edge of the disk, but other variations with different causes are also seen.

Filamentary molecular clouds are thought to fragment to form clumps and cores. However, the fragmentation may be suppressed by magnetic force if the magnetic fields run perpendicularly to the cloud axis. We evaluate the effect using a simple model. Our model cloud is assumed to have a Plummer like radial density distribution, $\rho = {\rho _{\rm{c}}}{\left[ {1 + {r^2}/(2p{H^2})} \right]^{2p}}$ , where r and H denote the radial distance from the cloud axis and the scale length, respectively. The symbols, ρc and p denote the density on the axis and radial density index, respectively. The initial magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and perpendicular to the cloud axis. The model cloud is assumed to be supported against the self gravity by gas pressure and turbulence. We have obtained the growth rate of the fragmentation instability as a function of the wavelength, according to the method of Hanawa, Kudoh & Tomisaka (2017). The instability depends crucially on the outer boundary. If the displacement vanishes in regions very far from the cloud axis, cloud fragmentation is suppressed by a moderate magnetic field. If the displacement is constant along the magnetic field in regions very far from the cloud, the cloud is unstable even when the magnetic field is infinitely strong. The wavelength of the most unstable mode is longer for smaller index, p.
