We have identified a new population of luminous, optical, narrow-lined transients (FWHM ∼1000 km s−1) coincident with the nuclear region of Seyfert galaxies. According to extensive spectrophotometric follow-ups of the main event (PS1-10adi), we could exclude both normal active galactic nucleus activity and changing-look quasars as the origin. The integrated energy output and spectral evolution over a time-scale of several years point to two possible paths of origin: a tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole, or an extremely energetic supernova occurring within the Seyfert galaxy’s narrow-line (or broad-line) region. The former model would require invoking a specific variant of a tidal disruption, while the latter would require an extremely efficient conversion of kinetic energy via shock interaction between the supernova ejecta and the dense ambient medium.

Common envelope evolution (CEE) occurs in some binary systems involving asymptotic giant branch (AGB) or red giant branch (RGB) stars, and understanding this process is crucial for understanding the origins of various transient phenomena. CEE has been shown to be highly asymmetrical and global 3D simulations are needed to help understand the dynamics. We perform and analyze hydrodynamic CEE simulations with the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code AstroBEAR, and focus on the role of accretion onto the companion star. We bracket the range of accretion rates by comparing a model that removes mass and pressure using a subgrid accretion prescription with one that does not. Provided a pressure-release valve, such as a bipolar jet, is available, super-Eddington accretion could be common. Finally, we summarize new results pertaining to the energy budget, and discuss the overall implications relating to the feasibility of unbinding the envelope in CEE simulations.

The list of planets discovered in the habitable zone of its star is continuously growing. We present a simple one-dimension radiative transfer model in order to better infer on the habitability of such systems. Particular focus is on the TRAPPIST-1 planets (Gillon et al.2017), particularly on planets b, c, d, e and f.

The properties of ∼ 1000 high-excitation and low-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs and LERGs) selected from the Heywood et al. (2016) 1 – 2 GHz VLA survey of Stripe 82 are investigated. The HERGs in this sample are generally found in host galaxies with younger stellar populations than LERGs, consistent with other work. The HERGs tend to accrete at a faster rate than the LERGs, but there is more overlap in the accretion rates of the two classes than has been found previously. We find evidence that mechanical feedback may be significantly underestimated in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy evolution; 84 % of this sample release more than 10 % of their energy in mechanical form. Mechanical feedback is significant for many of the HERGs in this sample as well as the LERGs; nearly 50 % of the HERGs release more than 10 % of their energy in their radio jets.

We report the analysis of the gamma-ray variability of NGC 1275–the radio galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster. NGC 1275 has been observed continuously with the Fermi Large Area Telescope over the last nine years. We applied different time-domain analysis methods including Fourier, wavelets and Bayesian methods, in order to search for quasi-periodic oscillations in the gamma-ray emission. We found no evidence for periodicities of astrophysical origin.

. NGC 300 X-1 and IC 10 X-1 are currently the only two robust extragalactic candidates for being Wolf-Rayet/black hole X-ray binaries, the Galactic analogue being Cyg X-3. These systems are believed to be a late product of high-mass X-ray binary evolution and direct progenitors of black hole mergers. From the analysis of Swift data, the orbital period of NGC 300 X-1 was found to be 32.8 h. We here merge the full set of existing data of NGC 300 X-1, using XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift observations to derive a more precise value of the orbital period of 32.7932 ± 0.0029 h above a confidence level of 99.99%. This allows us to phase connect the X-ray light curve of the source with radial velocity measurements of He II lines performed in 2010. We show that, as for IC 10 X-1 and Cyg X-3, the X-ray eclipse corresponds to maximum of the blueshift of the He II lines, instead of the expected zero velocity. This indicates that for NGC 300 X-1 as well, the wind of the WR star is completely ionised by the black hole radiation and that the emission lines come from the region of the WR star that is in the shadow. We also present for the first time the light curve of two recent very long XMM-Newton observations of the source, performed on the 16th to 20th of December 2016.

The formation of Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) is favored within dense stellar systems such as Globular Clusters (GCs). The connection between LMXB and Globular Clusters has been extensively studied in the literature, but these studies have always been restricted to the innermost regions of galaxies. We present a study of LMXB in GCs within the central 1.5 deg2 of the Fornax cluster with the aim of confirming the existence of a population of LMXB in intra-cluster GCs and understand if their properties are related to the host GCs, to the environment or/and to different formation channels.

Whiting 1 is a faint and young globular cluster embedded in the Sag dSph. It has similar distance, metalicity and radial velocity with the trailing stream of the Sag. Due to these special properties, Whiting 1 was suggested to be associated with the trailing stream of Sag. However, its origin is still unclear and further investigation of its relation with Sgr dSph is needed. In this work, we use DECaLS data to search the tidal tail of Whiting 1, with the aim of looking for spatial connection between Whiting 1 and Sgr dSph. With Matched Filter method, we detected a tidal tail around the main body of Whiting 1. This tail extends to at least 0.5 degree and aligns with the mean orbit direction of Sgr dSph. This tail is newly detected and it provides additional evidence of the association between Whiting 1 and Sgr trailing stream.

Recent advancements in astrometry and in cosmological models of dark matter halo growth have significantly changed our understanding of the dynamics of the Local Group. The most dramatic changes owe to a new picture of the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way’s most massive satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is most likely on its first passage about the Milky Way and ten times larger in mass than previously assumed. The LMC’s orbit through the Milky Way’s dark matter and stellar halo will leave characteristic signatures in both density and kinematics. Furthermore, the gravitational perturbations produced by both direct tidal forcing from the LMC and the response of the halo to its passage will together cause significant perturbations to the orbits of tracers of the Milky Way’s dark matter distribution. We advocate for the use of basis field expansion methods to fully capture and quantify these effects.

Integrated light (IL) spectroscopy enables studies of stellar populations beyond the Milky Way and its nearest satellites. In this paper, I will review how IL spectroscopy reveals essential information about globular clusters and the assembly histories of their host galaxies, concentrating particularly on the metallicities and detailed chemical abundances of the GCs in M31. I will also briefly mention the effects of multiple populations on IL spectra, and how observations of distant globular clusters help constrain the source(s) of light-element abundance variations. I will end with future perspectives, emphasizing how IL spectroscopy can bridge the gap between Galactic and extragalactic astronomy.

The Local Group contains a great number of dwarf irregulars and spheroidals, for which the spectroscopy of individual stars can be obtained. Thus, the chemical evolution of these galaxies can be traced, with the only need of finding populations spanning a large age range and such that we can accurately derive the composition. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are old- and intermediate-age star remnants and their chemical abundances can be obtained up to 3-4 Mpc. H ii regions, which are brighter and much easily detected, represent galaxies young content. PNe and H ii regions share similar spectroscopic features and are analysed in the same way. Both are among the best tracers of the chemical evolution allowing to draw the chemical time line of nearby galaxies. The focus in this review are the PN and H ii region populations as constraints to the chemical evolution models and the mass-metallicity relation of the local universe.

Younger and fully convective stars are much more active than our Sun, producing many superflares. Here we estimate the impact of the superflares UV radiation on living organisms on the surface of orbiting planets in the habitable zone of the star. For this we study two active stars, Kepler-96 (solar type) and TRAPPIST-1 (M dwarf). Kepler-96, with an age of 2.4 Gyr, is at the same stage of the Sun when the first multicellular organisms appeared on Earth. The biological impact of super flares are studied on a hypothetical Earth at 1AU of Kepler-96 and on planets TRAPPIST-1e, f, and g for three atmospheres scenarios: an Archean and Present-day atmospheres with and without ozone. We estimated the survival rates of two bacteria and concluded that life would only survive on the surface of these planets if their atmosphere had an ozone layer, or in shallow waters of an ocean.

Radio galaxies of intermediate power dominate the radio-power injection in the Universe as a whole, due to the break in the radio luminosity function, and so are of special interest. The population spans FR I, FR II, and hybrid morphologies, resides in a full range of environmental richness, and sources of all ages are amenable to study. We describe structures and interactions, with emphasis on sources with deep high-resolution Chandra X-ray data. As compared with low-power sources there is evidence that the physics changes, and the work done in driving shocks can exceed that in evacuating cavities. A range of morphologies and phenomena is identified.

The Deeper Wider Faster programme (DWF) is a project that coordinates more than 30 multi-wavelength and multi-messenger facilities worldwide and in space, in order to detect and study fast transients (durations of milliseconds to hours). DWF has four main components: (1) simultaneous observations, where ∼10 major facilities, from radio to gamma-ray, are coordinated to perform short-cadence, deep, wide-field observations of the same field at the same time. Radio telescopes search for fast radio bursts, while optical imagers and high-energy instruments search for transient events whose time-scales are seconds to hours, (2) supercomputer data processing and candidate identification in real time (seconds to minutes), along with human inspection of candidates, also in real time (minutes), using sophisticated visualisation technology, (3) rapid-response (minutes) follow-up spectroscopy and imaging, and conventional ToO observations, and (4) long-term follow up by a global network of 1-m to 4-m telescopes. The principal goals of DWF are to discover and study counterparts to fast radio bursts and gravitational-wave events, as well as transients at all wavelengths that have durations of milliseconds to hours.

. A fraction of high-mass X-ray binaries are supergiant fast X-ray transients. These systems have on average low X-ray luminosities, but display short flares during which their X-ray luminosity rises by a few orders of magnitude. The leading model for the physics governing this X-ray behaviour suggests that the winds of the donor OB supergiants are magnetized. In agreement with this model, the first spectropolarimetric observations of the SFXT IGR J11215-5952 using the FORS 2 instrument at the Very Large Telescope indicate the presence of a kG longitudinal magnetic field. Based on these results, it seems possible that the key difference between supergiant fast X-ray transients and other high-mass X-ray binaries are the properties of the supergiant’s stellar wind and the physics of the wind’s interaction with the neutron star magnetosphere.

Most planetary nebulae (PNe) show beautiful, axisymmetric morphologies despite their progenitor stars being essentially spherical. Angular momentum provided by a close binary companion is widely invoked as the main agent that would help eject an axisymmetric nebula, after a brief phase of engulfment of the secondary within the envelope of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star, known as a common envelope (CE). The evolution on the AGB would thus be interrupted abruptly, its (still quite) massive envelope fully ejected to form the PN, which should be more massive than a PN coming from the same star were it single. We test this hypothesis by deriving the ionised+molecular masses of a pilot sample of post-CE PNe and comparing them to a regular PNe sample. We find the mass of post-CE PNe to be actually lower, on average, than their regular counterparts, raising some doubts on our understanding of these intriguing objects.

The recent observations in the high energy γ-ray band show that the extragalactic γ-ray sky is dominated by the emission from blazars. However, γ-ray emission from other types of AGNs, e.g., radiogalaxies, also have been detected. These sources were not considered as favored GeV emitters because the nonthermal emission from their jets is less Doppler boosted. Now, the γ-ray emission from more than 25 non-blazar AGNs has been already detected which opened a new window to have an insight into the particle acceleration and emission processes in different components of AGNs. Here, I will present the γ-ray variability of two well-known radiogalaxies, NGC 1275 and 3C 120, which show a rapid flux increase in the γ-ray band.

The role of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in chemical enrichment is significant for producing 12,13C, 14N, F, 25,26Mg, 17O and slow neutron-capture process (s-process) elements. The contribution from super-AGB stars is negligible in classical, one-zone chemical evolution models, but the mass ranges can be constrained through the contribution from electron-capture supernovae and possibly hybrid C+O+Ne white dwarfs, if they explode as Type Iax supernovae. In addition to the recent s-process yields of AGB stars, we include various sites for rapid neutron-capture processes (r-processes) in our chemodynamical simulations of a Milky Way type galaxy. We find that neither electron-capture supernovae or neutrino-driven winds are able to adequately produce heavy neutron-capture elements such as Eu in quantities to match observations. Both neutron-star mergers (NSMs) and magneto-rotational supernovae (MRSNe) are able to produce these elements in sufficient quantities. Using the distribution in [Eu/(Fe, α)] – [Fe/H], we predict that NSMs alone are unable to explain the observed Eu abundances, but may be able to together with MRSNe. In order to discuss the role of long-lifetime sources such as NSMs and AGB stars at the early stages of galaxy formation, it is necessary to use a model that can treat inhomogeneous chemical enrichment, such as in our chemodynamical simulations. In our cosmological, chemodynamical simulations, we succeed in reproducing the observed N/O-O/H relations both for global properties of galaxies and for local inter-stellar medium within galaxies, without rotation of stars. We also predict the evolution of CNO abundances of disk galaxies, from which it will be possible to constrain the star formation histories.

The community of massive stars is working intensively on Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrr). They are a reservoir of metal-poor massive stars that serve to understand the physics of their higher redshift siblings and population III stars, interpret the farthest, most energetic SNe and GRBs, and compute feedback through Cosmic History. Along the way, we became interested in the recent star-formation history and initial mass-function of the host dIrr’s, their chemical evolution, and gas and dust content. Our team is working to unveil and characterize with spectroscopy the OB-stars in IC 1613, Sextans A and SagDIG, that form a sequence of decreasing metal content. We showcase some results to stimulate synergies between both communities.

It is believed that magnetic fields play important roles in the processes leading to the formation of stars and planets. Polarimetry from optical to centimeter wavelengths has been the most powerful observing technique to study magnetic fields: the development of polarimetric capabilities on a wide range of observational facilities now allows to probe the magnetic field properties in various objects along the star formation sequence, from star-forming molecular clouds to young stars and their protoplanetary disks. However, the complexity of combining results from different observational techniques and facilities emphasizes the need to transcend historical barriers and bring together the various communities working with polarimetric observations. This Focus Meeting was a first step to compare observations of magnetic fields at the various evolutionary stages and physical scales involved in star formation processes, such that we can establish a coherent view of their key role in the multi-scale process of star formation.
