Astrosat is a multi-instrument orbiting observatory that was launched in 2015 by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The same field of view is observed simultaneously at wavelengths ranging from gamma ray to the optical blue. This talk described the observatory’s performance, with emphasis on time-domain studies, and gave examples of results.

One may argue that, today, proceedings articles are not useful. Results belong in refereed papers and even reviews are best in publications that are long enough to do justice to the topic reviewed. In this short review, reflecting a presentation that was given at the IAU343 symposium, Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars, I have therefore endeavoured to include some practical snippets that, while remaining true to the presentation, also provide a quick look up reference. After a reminder of how few AGB stars actually interact with a companion, and a pictorial summary of the types of interactions that can happen, I list the rapidly growing body of 3D common envelope simulations. Next, I highlight shortfalls and successes of simulations, and then spend some time comparing the two simulations of planetary nebulae from common envelope interactions to date. Finally, I summarise a handful of results pertaining to common envelope interactions between giants and planets.

Energetic feedback by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) plays an important evolutionary role in the regulation of star formation (SF) on galactic scales. However, the effects of this feedback as a function of redshift and galaxy properties such as mass, environment and cold gas content remain poorly understood. The broad frequency coverage (1 to 116 GHz), high collecting area (about ten times higher than the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array), and superb angular resolution (maximum baselines of at least a few hundred km) of the proposed next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) are uniquely poised to revolutionize our understanding of AGN and their role in galaxy evolution.

The inference of the Milky Way halo mass requires modelling the phase space structure of dynamical tracers, with different tracers following different models and having different levels of sensitivity to the halo mass. For steady-state models, deviations from steady-state in the tracer distribution lead to an irreducible stochastic bias. This bias is small for satellite galaxies and dark matter particles, but as large as a factor of 2 for halo stars. This is consistent with the picture that satellite galaxies closely trace the underlying phase space distribution of dark matter particles, while halo stars are less phase-mixed. As a result, the use of only ~100 satellite galaxies can achieve a significantly higher accuracy than that achievable with a much larger sample of halo stars.

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) presents us with a unique opportunity to study in detail the effect of environmental processes (interaction with the LMC and the Milky Way) on its star formation history. With the 6.5m Magellan Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile we have acquired deep B and I images in four 0.44 degree fields covering a large part of the main body of the SMC, yielding accurate photometry for 1,068,893 stars down to ~24th magnitude, with a spatial resolution of 0.201 arcsec/pixel. Colour-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions (corrected for completeness) have been constructed, yielding significant new results that indicate at least two discrete star formation events around 2.7 and 4-5 Gyr ago.

Many distinct classes of high-energy variability have been observed in astrophysical sources, and over a range of time-scales. The widest range, spanning microseconds to decades, is found in accreting, compact, stellar-mass objects, including neutron stars and black holes. Neutron stars are of particular observational interest as they exhibit surface effects giving rise to phenomena – such as thermonuclear bursts and pulsations – not seen in black holes.

This talk reviewed briefly the present understanding of thermonuclear (Type-I) X-ray bursts – events that are powered by an extensive chain of nuclear reactions which in many cases are unique to the environments. Thermonuclear bursts have been exploited over the last few years as an avenue to measure a neutron star’s mass and radius, although the contribution of systematic errors to the measurements remains contentious. We described recent efforts to match burst models to observations better, with a view to resolving some of the astrophysical uncertainties relating to those events. Our efforts have good prospects for providing information that is complementary to nuclear experiments.

Because of their young ages and compact densities, young massive star clusters (YMCs) are widely considered as potential proto-globular clusters. They are ubiquitous in environments with ongoing star formation activity such as interacting luminous infrared galaxies. To determine the galactic environmental effects on the star cluster formation and evolution, we study the YMC population of Arp 299 (NGC 3690E/NGC 3690W) using data taken with the HST WFC3/UVIS camera. By fitting the multiband photometry with the Yggdrasil models, we derive the star cluster masses, ages and extinction. While the cluster mass-galactocentric radius relation of NGC 3690E indicates that there could be an influence of the gas density distribution on the cluster formation, the age distribution of the western component suggests that YMCs in that galaxy endure stronger disruption mechanisms. With a cluster formation efficiency of 19 percent, star formation happening in bound clusters in Arp 299 is 3–5 times higher than that of a typical normal spiral.

Black holes are usually observed to be of stellar-mass or supermassive. By natural extension, there should be a population of Intermediate-Mass Black Holes (IMBHs: with mass between 100 to 106M⊙) in the Universe; which has started to been observed. An exciting claim has been made recently by Silk (2017): that early feedback by IMBHs in gas-rich dwarf galaxies at z = 5–8, can potentially solve multiple dwarf galaxy problems within the Λ-cold-dark-matter cosmology. We are performing Cosmological Hydrodynamical Simulations of (2Mpc)3 volumes, starting from z = 100, to test the case for IMBHs in Dwarf Galaxies. Black holes of mass 1000M⊙ are seeded inside halos when they reach a mass of 107M⊙. The black holes grow by accretion of gas from their surroundings and by merger with other black holes, and consequently eject feedback energy. We analyze the simulation output in post-processing to study the growth of the first IMBHs, and their impact on star-formation. Our conclusions, based on numerical simulation results, support the phenomenological ideas made by Silk (2017). IMBHs at the centers of dwarf galaxies can be a strong source of feedback to quench star-formation and generate outflows. At the same time, these IMBHs form the missing link between stellar-mass and supermassive BHs.

More than a decade after fast x-ray transients with an OB supergiant counterpart were identified as a distinct class of wind-accreting sources, we still have not reached a consensus on the physical origin of their similarities and differences with persistent sources. Both kinds seem to extend over the same range of every relevant parameter. Here I argue that, despite this overall overlap, persistent sources have – on average – later-type, more evolved counterparts, and discuss the hypothesis that SFXTs are – on average – a younger population, as well as some of its possible implications.

Computer simulations of migration of planetesimals from beyond the Jupiter’s orbit to the terrestrial planets have been made. Based on obtained arrays of orbital elements of planetesimals and planets during the dynamical lifetimes of planetesimals, we calculated the probabilities of collisions of planetesimals with planets, the Moon, and their embryos. The results of calculations showed that for the total mass of planetesimals of about 200 Earth masses, the mass of water delivered to the Earth from beyond the orbit of Jupiter could be about the mass of the terrestrial oceans. For the growth of the mass of the Earth embryo up to a half of the present mass of the Earth, the mass of water delivered to the embryo could be up to 30% of all water delivered to the Earth from the zone of Jupiter and Saturn. The water of the terrestrial oceans and its D/H ratio could be the result of mixing of water from several exogenic and endogenic sources with large and low D/H ratios. The ratio of the mass of water delivered from beyond the orbit of Jupiter to a planet to the mass of the planet for Venus, Mars, and Mercury was not smaller than that for the Earth. The mass of water in planetesimals that collided the Moon and migrated from beyond the Jupiter’s orbit could be not more than 20 times smaller than that for the Earth.

New data obtained by space missions to various objects in the Solar system and observations of the outer Solar system and exoplanets by space and ground-based telescopes allowed us to conclude that the atmospheric escape plays an important role in the evolution of the terrestrial planets in the Solar system. We present the recent results of application of the kinetic approach to the problem of neutral escape from planetary atmospheres. As an example, the recent measurements by Mars Express and MAVEN spacecraft are compared with the calculations of neutral escape with the aim to understand the atmospheric loss at Mars. Also the recent calculations of the mass-loss rates of the hot Neptune and Jupiter atmospheres are presented.

The INTEGRAL archive developed at INAF-IASF Milano with the available public observations from late 2002 to 2016 is investigated to extract the X-ray properties of 58 High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs). This sample consists of sources hosting either a Be star (Be/XRBs) or an early-type supergiant companion (SgHMXBs), including the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). INTEGRAL light curves (sampled at 2 ks) are used to build their hard X-ray luminosity distributions, returning the source duty cycles, the range of variability of the X-ray luminosity and the time spent in each luminosity state. The phenomenology observed with INTEGRAL, together with the source variability at soft X-rays taken from the literature, allows us to obtain a quantitative overview of the main sub-classes of massive binaries in accretion (Be/XRBs, SgHMXBs and SFXTs). Although some criteria can be derived to distinguish them, some SgHMXBs exist with intermediate properties, bridging together persistent SgHMXBs and SFXTs.

Thanks to the Fermi λ-ray satellite and the current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, radio galaxies have arisen as a new class of high- and very-high energy emitters. The favourable orientation of their jets makes radio galaxies extremely relevant in addressing important issues such as: (i) revealing the jet structure complexity; (ii) localising the emitting region(s) of high- and very-high energy radiation; (iii) understanding the physical processes producing these photons. In this review the main results on the λ-ray emission studies of radio galaxies from the MeV to TeV regimes will be presented, and the impact of future Cherenkov Telescope Array observations will be discussed.

We present the results of a decade-long radial velocity monitoring campaign of post-AGB binaries. We derived the orbital elements of 33 post-AGB binaries. We find a companion mass distribution centred around 1.09 M⊙ with a very large spread. All the post-AGB binaries in our sample are expected to have filled their Roche lobes while at giant dimensions. Current binary evolution models are unable to explain the observed distribution of orbits.

RR Lyrae stars are powerful tools to study their host populations. Information such as distance, metallicity, reddening, and age can be obtained from their pulsation properties. Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are the most common type of galaxy in the Local Group. They are found around massive hosts such as the Milky Way (MW) and M31 and are suggested to be the present-day counterparts to systems from which spheroids and stellar halos of larger galaxies were assembled. By comparing RR Lyraes in these dSphs with their host galaxies, we hope to understand more about the formation of these galaxies. In order to achieve this goal, we have analyzed six fields in M31 using archival imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. Published data for M31, M33, and several M31 dSphs are also included. The results are then compared with those in the MW to better constrain the early history of these systems.

The last two years have seen widespread acceptance of the idea that the Milky Way halo was largely created in an early (8-10 Gyr ago) and massive (>1010Mȯ) merger. The roots of this idea pre-date the Gaia mission, but the exquisite proper motions available from Gaia have made the hypothesis irresistible. We trace the history of this idea, reviewing the series of papers that led to our current understanding.

Sensitive continuum surveys with next-generation interferometers will characterise large samples of radio sources at epochs during which cosmological models predict feedback from radio jets to play an important role in galaxy evolution. Dynamical models of radio sources provide a framework for deriving from observations the radio jet duty cycles and energetics, and hence the energy budget available for feedback. Environment plays a crucial role in determining observable radio source properties, and I briefly summarise recent efforts to combine galaxy formation and jet models in a self-consistent framework. Galaxy clustering estimates from deep optical and NIR observations will provide environment measures needed to interpret the observed radio populations.

This contribution gave three examples of X-ray transients in the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way that have been observed as part of the SALT Transients Large Programme. The transients (SMC X-3, MAXI J1957+032 and ASASSN-16oh) have been triggered from both space-based wide-field monitoring facilities (Swift/XRT, MAXI) and ground-based ones (ASASSN, the All Sky Automated Survey for SN), providing insights into the physics of super-Eddington accretion onto neutron stars and white dwarfs, and also into the long-term properties of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars.

It has been a long-standing open question why observed globular cluster (GC) populations of different metallicities differ in their ages and spatial distributions, with metal-poor GCs being the older and radially more extended of the two. We use the suite of 25 Milky Way-mass cosmological zoom-in simulations from the E-MOSAICS project, which self-consistently model the formation and evolution of stellar clusters and their host galaxies, to understand the properties of observed GC populations. We find that the different ages and spatial distributions of metal-poor and metal-rich GCs are the result of regular cluster formation at high redshift in the context of hierarchical galaxy assembly. We also find that metallicity on its own is not a good tracer of accretion, and other properties, such as kinematics, need to be considered.

Massive stars are the drivers of the chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies. We review here the basics of massive star evolution and the specificities of stellar evolution in low-Z environment. We discuss nucleosynthetic aspects and what observations could constrain our view on the first generations of stars.
