Radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) produce relativistic jets that can be modelled with relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations. In this study we present two such simulations of jets, used to investigate the parameters required to reproduce structures consistent with both FR I and FRII jets. In the first simulation a Lorentz factor of 10 and supersonic flow of Mach 30 were chosen, while for the second simulation a Lorentz factor of 1.0014 with a supersonic flow of Mach 4 was used. Over similar distances scales the first case shows a well collimated beam with a strong shock at the interface between the jet and ambient medium while the second case shows a less stable beam and a larger cocoon. To determine whether the simulated physical structures are consistent with the observed FR I/II jets, the synchrotron emission has been calculated to produce radio maps at a single frequency of 1.5 GHz.

Variability due to stellar pulsation on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) has a great potential for applications such as distance measurements, the study the evolution of stars and galaxies, and the estimate of global stellar parameters, as well as to constrain stellar evolutionary models. Given the importance of long-period variables (LPVs) in this sense, and given the lack of recent, updated sets of pulsation models, we computed an extended grid of pulsation models widely covering the space of AGB stellar parameters, including up-to-date opacities and accounting for the chemical evolution associated with third dredge-up events. We present the relevant properties of this grid and discuss the main results it allowed to obtain in terms of the interpretation of the observed properties of LPVs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).

In this study (Taubner et al.2018), three different methanogenic archaea (Methanothermococcus okinawensis, Methanothermobacter marburgensis, and Methanococcus villosus) were tested for metabolic activities and growth under putative Enceladus-like conditions, including high pressure experiments and tests on the tolerance towards potential gaseous and liquid inhibitors detected in Enceladus’ plume. In particular, M. okinawensis, an isolate from a deep marine trench (Takai et al.2002), showed tolerance towards all of the added inhibitors and maintained methanogenesis even in the range of 10 to 50 bar. Further, we were able to show that H2 production based on serpentinization may be sufficient to fuel such methanogenic life on Enceladus. The experiments revealed that methanogenesis could, in principle, be feasible under Enceladus-like conditions.

The revolution in time-domain astronomy has arrived. Large-scale surveys are detecting events at an unparallelled rate, and discoveries of new and exotic objects abound. In just a few short years, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will begin operations in Chile. At that point, the rate of production of time-domain events will jump by a factor of at least a hundred. The traditional techniques of handling each detection individually will not scale to those current and future productions. The ANTARES project is a joint venture between NOAO and the University of Arizona Computer Science Department to develop a software infrastructure system to process time-domain events automatically at the scale and rate that LSST will generate them.

The Planck catalogue of Galactic cold clumps, PGCC, contains sources of ongoing and future star formation. The data show clear variations also in their dust properties.

We use Planck polarization measurements to investigate the polarization fraction in PGCC clumps and the relative orientation of filamentary structures and magnetic fields (Alina et al. 2017). The decrease of polarization fraction as a function of column density can be related to the field geometry but also suggest some loss of grain alignment.

PGCCs have been studied with ground-based observations (Liu et al. 2018). The first SCUBA-2/POL-2 polarization studies have targeted the infrared dark cloud G35.39-0.33. The magnetic field is found to be mostly perpendicular to the main filament. The plane-of-the-sky field strength is $\sim 50\mu \,{\rm{G}}$ , a noticeable support against gravity. The polarization fraction decreases with increasing column density. This matches predictions of RAT grain alignment models but the relative contribution of the field morphology is hard to quantify (Juvela et al. 2018).

We continue to use MHD simulations to study the same phenomena, with synthetic observations of clumps and filaments.

Long-term and short-term multicolor photometric variations of the X-ray binary system Her X-1 (HZ Her) has been studied. We obtained new VRI observations of the system by using the 60cm Robotic telescope at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) in 2018. Using newly obtained data, we modified the orbital period of the binary system with a neutron star component.

Hot star winds are driven by the radiative force due to light absorption in lines of heavier elements. Therefore, the amount of mass lost by the star per unit of time, i.e., the mass-loss rate, is sensitive to metallicity. We provide mass-loss rate predictions for O stars with mass fraction of heavier elements 0.2 <Z/Z⊙ ≤ 1. Our predictions are based on global model atmospheres. The models allow us to predict wind terminal velocity and the mass-loss rate just from basic global stellar parameters. We provide a formula that fits the mass-loss rate predicted by our models as a function of stellar luminosity and metallicity. On average, the mass-loss rate scales with metallicity as (Z/Z⊙)0.59. The predicted mass-loss rates agree with mass-loss rates derived from ultraviolet wind line profiles. At low metallicity, the rotational mixing affects the wind mass-loss rates. We study the influence of magnetic line blanketing.

Nearly two thirds of spiral galaxies are either strongly or weakly barred, yet a significant fraction of disc galaxies do not have a bar. Now we understand that there are at least three ways of making bars, i.e., bar instability, tidal interaction, and secular bar growth by orbit trapping of a seed bar. However, the reverse problem of avoiding bar formation in unbarred galaxies may be more challenging than we thought. It is shocking that we still do not understand how the bar instability is avoided in real galaxies such as M33, and this puzzle may be central to the outstanding issue of what determines the distribution of bar strengths in galaxies.

We investigate, for the first time, the formation and evolution of the tidal tail released from a young Pleiades-like star cluster due to expulsion of primordial gas in a realistic gravitational field of the Galaxy. The tidal tails (as well as clusters) are integrated by nbody6 from their embedded phase for more than 300 Myr. We vary the star formation efficiency (SFE) from 33% to 100% and the timescales of gas expulsion as free parameters, and provide predictions for the morphology and kinematics of the evolved tail for each of the models. The resulting tail properties are intended for comparison with Gaia measurements, where an inverse analysis of our findings might constrain some of the poorly understood conditions and processes in embedded star clusters during the gas phase and gas expulsion.

Observations of low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) and the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) show that the wind exists. Black hole in LLAGNs and hard state of BHBs accretes gas in hot accretion mode. In this paper, we first use magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of hot accretion flow around a black hole to study the origin of the wind. We find that the wind is driven by the combination of gradients of gas and magnetic pressure and centrifugal forces. Second, we use simulations with focus on the region around Bondi radius to study whether the wind can be generated outside Bondi radius. In the simulation studying hot accretion flow around Bondi radius, in addition to the black hole gravity, we also take into account the gravity of nuclei stars. We find that the wind can not be generated outside Bondi radius. The absence of the wind is due to the change of gravity potential.

In March 2017, the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) ceased operations. This Symposium was an appropriate opportunity to review the scientific returns from iPTF and its predecessor survey, the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), and to summarise the lessons learned. Succeeding iPTF on the Palomar Observatory 48-inch Schmidt telescope is the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a new survey with an order of magnitude faster survey speed that is now being commissioned. I described the design and scientific rationale for ZTF. ZTF is prototyping new alert stream technologies being explored by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) to distribute millions of transient alerts per night to downstream science users. I described the design of the alert system and discussed it in the context of the wider LSST and community broker ecosystem.

With using the Planck polarization data (PR2, 2016A A…596A.109P), we investigate the magnetic fields in L1689 and associated clouds, and compare them with centroid velocities VLSR of 12CO and 13CO from the COMPLETE survey (2006AJ….131.2921R). We observe two components in this elongated region: in one component, the position angle of the magnetic field varies from –10 to 110 degrees in the galactic coordinate, while VLSR is rather constant (=4 ± 0.5 km/s). In the other component with the position angle being constant (=110 ± 15 degrees), the velocity VLSR shows a spatial gradient from 3 to 5 km/s, as one goes from west to east along the direction of elongation. If the east side of the component is more distant from us than the west, this gradient suggests that this component is stretching. Through vertical resonances, bars can produce pseudo-bulges, within secular evolution. Bulges and pseudo-bulges have doubled their mass since z=1. The frequency of bulge-less galaxies at z=0 is difficult to explain, especially since clumpy galaxies at high z should create classical bulges in all galaxies. This issue is solved in modified gravity models. Bars and spirals in a galaxy disk, produce gravity torques that drive the gas to the center and fuel central star formation and nuclear activity. At 0.1-1kpc scale, observations of gravity torques show that only about one third of Seyfert galaxies experience molecular inflow and central fueling, while in most cases the gas is stalled in resonant rings. At 10-20pc scale, some galaxies have clearly revealed AGN fueling due to nuclear trailing spirals, influenced by the black hole potential. Thanks to ALMA, and angular resolution of up to 80mas, it is possible to reach the central black hole (BH) zone of influence, discover molecular tori, circum-nuclear disks misaligned with the galaxy, and the BH mass can be derived more directly from the kinematics.

The stellar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has been studied in the last decade and has been found to be an important factor to determine the habitability of planetary surfaces. It is known that UVR can be a constraint for life. However, most of the studies of UVR and habitability have missed some fundamental aspects: i) Accurate estimation of the planetary atmospheric attenuation, ii) The biological inferences used to represent the impact of the stellar UVR on life are theoretical and based on the action spectrum (for DNA or microorganisms) or considering parameters as the “lethal dose” obtained from non-astrobiological experiments. Therefore, the conclusions reached by previous studies about the UVR habitability of planetary bodies may be inaccurate. In this work, we propose how to address these studies in a more accurate way through an interdisciplinary approach that combines astrophysics, microbiology, and photobiology and by the use of specially designed laboratory experiments.

. NGC 300 ULX1 is the fourth to be discovered in the class of the ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars. Pulsations from NGC 300 ULX1 were discovered during simultaneous XMM-Newton / NuSTAR observations in Dec. 2016. The period decreased from 31.71 s to 31.54 s within a few days, with a spin-up rate of –5.56×10–7 s s–1, likely one of the largest ever observed from an accreting neutron star. Archival Swift and NICER observations revealed that the period decreased exponentially from ~45 s to ~17.5 s over 2.3 years. The pulses are highly modulated with a pulsed fraction strongly increasing with energy and reaching nearly 80% at energies above 10 keV. The X-ray spectrum is described by a power-law and a disk black-body model, leading to a 0.3–30 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 4.7×1039 erg s–1. The spectrum from an archival XMM-Newton observation of 2010 can be explained by the same model, however, with much higher absorption. This suggests, that the intrinsic luminosity did not change much since that epoch. NGC 300 ULX1 shares many properties with supergiant high mass X-ray binaries, however, at an extreme accretion rate.

Modeling low mass stellar populations, like clusters and dwarf galaxies, with population synthesis models requires that we evaluate the role played by stochastic fluctuations in the sampling of the IMF on the spectro-photometric properties of these sparse populations. Interacting binaries may also modify the integrated spectra of these systems depending on the final product of the binary interaction and on the frequency of binary stars. In this work we compare the relative importance of stochastic fluctuations and binary evolution on low mass galaxy properties as a function of the population age and total mass. In most cases the effects of stochastic fluctuations dominate those produced by binary interactions. We explore and quantify the relative importance of these effects through cosmic times.

Star clusters are often born as star-cluster systems, which include several stellar clumps. Such star-cluster complexes could have formed from turbulent molecular clouds. Since Gaia Data Release 2 provided us high quality velocity data of individual stars in known star-cluster complexes, we now can compare the velocity structures of the observed star-cluster complexes with simulated ones. We performed a series of N-body simulations for the formation of star-cluster complexes starting from turbulent molecular clouds. We measured the inter-cluster velocity dispersions of our simulated star-cluster complexes and compared them with the Carina region and NGC 2264. We found that the Carina region and NGC 2264 formed from molecular clouds with a mass of ∼4 × 105M⊙ and ∼4 × 104M⊙, respectively. In our simulations, we also found that the maximum cluster mass (Mc,max) in the complex follows ${M_{{\rm{c}},{\rm{max}}}} = 0.{\rm{2}}0M_g^{0.76}$, where Mg is the initial gas mass.

Please check and confirm if it is fine. small number of the sample of 184 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds show signs that they are in the act of evolving off of the asymptotic giant branch. Most carbon stars grow progressively redder in all infrared colors and develop stronger pulsation amplitudes as their circumstellar dust shells become optically thicker. The reddest sources, however, have unexpectedly low pulsation amplitudes, and some even show blue excesses that could point to deviations from spherical symmetry as they eject the last of their envelopes. Previously, all dusty carbon-rich AGB stars have been labeled “extreme,” but that term should be reserved for the truly extreme carbon stars. These objects may well hold the clues needed to disentangle what actually happens when a star ejects the last of its envelope and evolves off of the AGB.

. The nature and evolution of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is an open problem in astrophysics. They challenge our current understanding of stellar compact objects and accretion physics. The recent discovery of pulsar ULXs further demonstrates the importance of this intriguing and rare class of objects.

In order to overcome the difficulties of directly studying the optical associations of ULXs, we generally resort in statistical studies of the stellar properties of their host galaxies. We present the largest such study based on the combination of Chandra archival data with the most complete galaxy catalog of the Local Universe. Incorporating robust distances and stellar population parameters based on associated multi-wavelength information, and we explore the association of ULXs with galaxies in the (star formation rate, stellar mass, metallicity) space.

We confirm the known correlation with morphology, star formation rate and stellar mass, while we find an excess of ULXs in dwarf galaxies, indicating dependence on age and metallicity.

Young star clusters (YSCs) with resolved stellar populations are well suited for studying star-cluster formation. In most cases, the (pre-main-sequence) stellar populations found in the YSCs are coeval with an intrinsic age spread of up to 1Myr. Such observations can be understood as the YSCs having formed in one burst, which star formation was truncated by stellar feedback. The recent discovery that the colour-magnitude diagram of the Orion Nebula Clusters (ONC) contains three well defined age-separated populations appears to shatter this model. The implication is that the ONC formed in three bursts, with star formation still on-going in the last burst. We present new observational results focusing on the three populations in the ONC using OmegaCAM photometry and Gaia DR2 measurements. We also describe a theoretical model which may explain these observations by an interplay between stellar feedback and cluster dynamics.
