Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field of odd order and $a,b\in\mathbb F\setminus\{0,1\}$ be such that $\chi(a) = \chi(b)$ and $\chi(1-a)=\chi(1-b)$, where χ is the extended quadratic character on $\mathbb F$. Let $Q_{a,b}$ be the quasigroup over $\mathbb F$ defined by $(x,y)\mapsto x+a(y-x)$ if $\chi(y-x) \geqslant 0$, and $(x,y)\mapsto x+b(y-x)$ if $\chi(y-x) = -1$. We show that $Q_{a,b} \cong Q_{c,d}$ if and only if $\{a,b\}= \{\alpha(c),\alpha(d)\}$ for some $\alpha\in \operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb F)$. We also characterize $\operatorname{Aut}(Q_{a,b})$ and exhibit further properties, including establishing when $Q_{a,b}$ is a Steiner quasigroup or is commutative, entropic, left or right distributive, flexible or semisymmetric. In proving our results, we also characterize the minimal subquasigroups of $Q_{a,b}$.

We obtain a new bound on the second moment of modified shifted convolutions of the generalized threefold divisor function and show that, for applications, the modified version is sufficient.

For a general autonomous planar polynomial differential system, it is difficult to find conditions that are easy to verify and which guarantee global asymptotic stability, weakening the Markus–Yamabe condition. In this paper, we provide three conditions that guarantee the global asymptotic stability for polynomial differential systems of the form $x^{\prime}=f_1(x,y)$, $y^{\prime}=f_2(x,y)$, where f1 has degree one, f2 has degree $n\ge 1$ and has degree one in the variable y. As a consequence, we provide sufficient conditions, weaker than the Markus–Yamabe conditions that guarantee the global asymptotic stability for any generalized Liénard polynomial differential system of the form $x^{\prime}=y$, $y^{\prime}=g_1(x) +y g_2(x)$ with g1 and g2 polynomials of degrees n and m, respectively.

We prove discrete restriction estimates for a broad class of hypersurfaces arising in seminal work of Birch. To do so, we use a variant of Bourgain’s arithmetic version of the Tomas–Stein method and Magyar’s decomposition of the Fourier transform of the indicator function of the integer points on a hypersurface.

The local classification of Kaehler submanifolds $M^{2n}$ of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{2n+p}$ with low codimension $2\leq p\leq n-1$ under only intrinsic assumptions remains a wide open problem. The situation is quite different for submanifolds in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2n+p}$, $2\leq p\leq n-1$, since Florit et al. [7] have shown that the codimension has to be $p=n-1$ and then that any submanifold is just part of an extrinsic product of two-dimensional umbilical spheres in $\mathbb{S}^{3n-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^{3n}$. The main result of this paper is a version for Kaehler manifolds isometrically immersed into the hyperbolic ambient space of the result in [7] for spherical submanifolds. Besides, we generalize several results obtained by Dajczer and Vlachos [5].

Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor that are not conformally flat or locally symmetric, also known as essentially conformally symmetric (ECS) manifolds, have a natural local invariant, the rank, which equals 1 or 2, and is the rank of a certain distinguished null parallel distribution $\mathcal{D}$. All known examples of compact ECS manifolds are of rank one and have dimensions greater than 4. We prove that a compact rank-one ECS manifold, if not locally homogeneous, replaced when necessary by a twofold isometric covering, must be a bundle over the circle with leaves of $\mathcal{D}^\perp$ serving as the fibres. The same conclusion holds in the locally homogeneous case if one assumes that $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ has at least one compact leaf. We also show that in the pseudo-Riemannian universal covering space of any compact rank-one ECS manifold, the leaves of $\mathcal{D}^\perp$ are the factor manifolds of a global product decomposition.

In this note, we prove that every Salem number is expressible as a difference of two Pisot numbers. More precisely, we show that for each Salem number α of degree d, there are infinitely many positive integers n for which $\alpha^{2n-1}-\alpha^n+\alpha$ and $\alpha^{2n-1}-\alpha^n$ are both Pisot numbers of degree d and that the smallest such n is at most $6^{d/2-1}+1$. We also prove that every real positive algebraic number can be expressed as a quotient of two Pisot numbers. Earlier, Salem himself had proved that every Salem number can be written in this way.

Several authors have shown that Kusuoka’s measure κ on fractals is a scalar Gibbs measure; in particular, it maximizes a pressure. There is also a different approach, in which one defines a matrix-valued Gibbs measure µ, which induces both Kusuoka’s measure κ and Kusuoka’s bilinear form. In the first part of the paper, we show that one can define a ‘pressure’ for matrix-valued measures; this pressure is maximized by µ. In the second part, we use the matrix-valued Gibbs measure µ to count periodic orbits on fractals, weighted by their Lyapounov exponents.

We construct finitely generated groups of small period growth, i.e. groups where the maximum order of an element of word length n grows very slowly in n. This answers a question of Bradford related to the lawlessness growth of groups and is connected to an approximative version of the restricted Burnside problem.

It is argued that a nonsingular elliptic curve admits a natural or fundamental abelian heap structure uniquely determined by the curve itself. It is shown that the set of complex analytic or rational functions from a nonsingular elliptic curve to itself is a truss arising from endomorphisms of this heap.

We prove Lp norm convergence for (appropriate truncations of) the Fourier series arising from the Dirichlet Laplacian eigenfunctions on three types of triangular domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$: (i) the 45-90-45 triangle, (ii) the equilateral triangle and (iii) the hemiequilateral triangle (i.e. half an equilateral triangle cut along its height). The limitations of our argument to these three types are discussed in light of Lamé’s Theorem and the image method.

The Hopf–Galois structures admitted by a Galois extension of fields $ L/K $ with Galois group G correspond bijectively with certain subgroups of $ \mathrm{Perm}(G) $. We use a natural partition of the set of such subgroups to obtain a method for partitioning the set of corresponding Hopf–Galois structures, which we term ρ-conjugation. We study properties of this construction, with particular emphasis on the Hopf–Galois analogue of the Galois correspondence, the connection with skew left braces, and applications to questions of integral module structure in extensions of local or global fields. In particular, we show that the number of distinct ρ-conjugates of a given Hopf–Galois structure is determined by the corresponding skew left brace, and that if $ H, H^{\prime} $ are Hopf algebras giving ρ-conjugate Hopf–Galois structures on a Galois extension of local or global fields $ L/K $ then an ambiguous ideal $ \mathfrak{B} $ of L is free over its associated order in H if and only if it is free over its associated order in Hʹ. We exhibit a variety of examples arising from interactions with existing constructions in the literature.

We call a semigroup right perfect if every object in the category of unitary right acts over that semigroup has a projective cover. In this paper, we generalize results about right perfect monoids to the case of semigroups. In our main theorem, we will give nine conditions equivalent to right perfectness of a factorizable semigroup. We also prove that right perfectness is a Morita invariant for factorizable semigroups.

We investigate the complex geometry of total spaces of reductive principal bundles over compact base spaces and establish a close relation between the Kähler property of the base, momentum maps for the action of a maximal compact subgroup on the total space, and the Kähler property of special equivariant compactifications. We provide many examples illustrating that the main result is optimal.

We provide a simple condition on rational cohomology for the total space of a pullback fibration over a connected sum to have the rational homotopy type of a connected sum after looping. This takes inspiration from a recent work of Jeffrey and Selick, in which they study pullback fibrations of this type but under stronger hypotheses compared to our result.

A classical result of Baer states that a finite group G which is the product of two normal supersoluble subgroups is supersoluble if and only if Gʹ is nilpotent. In this article, we show that if G = AB is the product of supersoluble (respectively, w-supersoluble) subgroups A and B, A is normal in G and B permutes with every maximal subgroup of each Sylow subgroup of A, then G is supersoluble (respectively, w-supersoluble), provided that Gʹ is nilpotent. We also investigate products of subgroups defined above when $ A\cap B=1 $ and obtain more general results.

We demonstrate that two supersoluble complements of an abelian base in a finite split extension are conjugate if and only if, for each prime $p$, a Sylow $p$-subgroup of one complement is conjugate to a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the other. As a corollary, we find that any two supersoluble complements of an abelian subgroup $N$ in a finite split extension $G$ are conjugate if and only if, for each prime $p$, there exists a Sylow $p$-subgroup $S$ of $G$ such that any two complements of $S\cap N$ in $S$ are conjugate in $G$. In particular, restricting to supersoluble groups allows us to ease D. G. Higman's stipulation that the complements of $S\cap N$ in $S$ be conjugate within $S$. We then consider group actions and obtain a fixed point result for non-coprime actions analogous to Glauberman's lemma.

We show that the intersection of parabolic subgroups of an even finitely generated FC-type Artin group is again a parabolic subgroup.

Using the $H^{\infty }$-functional calculus for quaternionic operators, we show how to generate the fractional powers of some densely defined differential quaternionic operators of order $m\geq 1$, acting on the right linear quaternionic Hilbert space $L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb {C}\otimes \mathbb {H})$. We introduce a notion of barycenter of a probability measure related to the symmetric mean of a collection of non-negative real numbers. Our definition is inspired by the work of Halász and Székely, who in 1976 proved a law of large numbers for symmetric means. We study the analytic properties of this Halász–Székely barycenter. We establish fundamental inequalities that relate the symmetric mean of a list of non-negative real numbers with the barycenter of the measure uniformly supported on these points. As consequence, we go on to establish an ergodic theorem stating that the symmetric means of a sequence of dynamical observations converge to the Halász–Székely barycenter of the corresponding distribution.
