Sharks are scarce in much of the Caribbean due to widespread depletion. Trinidad and Tobago, in the southern Caribbean, is a shark meat consumer and international exporter of dried shark fins. Despite limited fisheries management there is a small Marine Protected Area (MPA; 7 km2) in urbanised southwest Tobago, but its effect on sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) is unknown. The rural northeast is a recently designated UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve with a significant marine component and plans for a large MPA, but no baseline data for elasmobranchs exist. Given the local importance of elasmobranchs and a newly drafted Sustainable Shark and Ray Management Plan, we used baited remote underwater video stations within a 40 m depth contour at 270 randomly generated points around Tobago to: (i) establish a baseline of species richness and relative abundance, (ii) investigate the influence of season, habitat relief, depth and water temperature on relative abundance, and (iii) investigate spatial variation in relative abundance. Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays were observed at all sites, the latter two more frequently in the urbanised southwest. Shark diversity was unexpectedly high in the northeast, driven by rarer species (sharpnose, smoothhound, tiger, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead) only observed there. Habitat relief, depth and season likely influence relative abundance of elasmobranchs around Tobago, but research is needed to elucidate species-level effects. Shark species richness in northeast Tobago is high for the Caribbean, warranting research attention, while the larger MPA presents an opportunity to strengthen elasmobranch management.

In this study, we applied generalized additive model to investigate the influence of spatial temporal variables and vessel length on catch per unit-effort (CPUE) of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) purse seine fishery using catch and effort data from commercial logbooks and field surveys from 1992 to 2006. The vessel lengths of sampled purse seines ranged from 20 to 64 m. The number of ABFT caught within each operation varied between 1 and 2000. A total of 386 CPUE values for ABFT were calculated 0.05 and 60 t ⋅ (haul day)–1 with mean CPUE of 5.51 ± 0.54 t ⋅ (haul day)–1. Although the sea surface temperature had little influence on the CPUE, the effect of time and spatial variables, vessel length and salinity was found as significant. In conclusion, the spatial dynamics of ABFT should be considered if the impact of fisheries on the ecosystem is to be reduced.

The Falkland Shelf is a highly productive ecosystem in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by upwelling oceanographic dynamics and displays a wasp-waist structure, with few intermediate trophic-level species and many top predators that migrate on the shelf for feeding. One of these resident intermediate trophic-level species, the Patagonian longfin-squid Doryteuthis gahi, is abundant and plays an important role in the ecosystem. We used two methods to estimate the trophic structure of the Falkland Shelf food web, focusing on the trophic niche of D. gahi and its impacts on other species and functional groups to highlight the importance of D. gahi in the ecosystem. First, stable isotope measurements served to calculate trophic levels based on an established nitrogen baseline. Second, an Ecopath model was built to corroborate trophic levels derived from stable isotopes and inform about trophic interactions of D. gahi with other functional groups. The results of both methods placed D. gahi in the centre of the ecosystem with a trophic level of ~ 3. The Ecopath model predicted high impacts and therefore a high keystoneness for both seasonal cohorts of D. gahi. Our results show that the Falkland Shelf is not only controlled by species feeding at the top and the bottom of the trophic chain. The importance of species feeding at the third trophic level (e.g. D. gahi and Patagonotothen ramsayi) and observed architecture of energy flows confirm the ecosystem's wasp-waist structure with middle-out control mechanisms at play.

A new species of the cyclorhagid genus Meristoderes is described. Meristoderes zmaj sp. n. is distinguished from its congeners by its unique arrangement of spines and tubes. It possesses acicular spines on segments 4, 6 and 8 in middorsal position and on segments 6–9 in lateroventral position; and tubes on segment 2 in subdorsal, midlateral and ventrolateral position, on segment 5 in lateroventral position and on segment 10 in laterodorsal position. With the formal description of M. zmaj sp. n., the number of species within the genus is increased to 10. In addition, the appearance of a new species and its accompanying fauna within the North-Eastern Adriatic Sea fauna, extensively studied by Kinorhyncha taxonomists, is discussed.

Shovelhead worms are common polychaetes around the British Isles and have been recorded in numerous ecological surveys. Yet, understanding of their habitat conditions is poor, based heavily on visual observations of sediments from historical records. In this study, the drivers of abundance and geographical distribution of two morphologically and behaviourally diverse species Magelona alleni and Magelona minuta are investigated by reanalysing sediment characteristics and depths from museum marine monitoring surveys. Although both species are historically associated with muddy sediments, the records herein suggest that M. alleni occurs in an extensive range of sediments, but is more abundant at localities with more than 25% sand. In comparison, M. minuta shows a negative linear relationship between grain diameter and abundance, corroborating previous work that the species is abundant in fine-grained mud. The depth records show that while M. alleni predominates below 60 m, M. minuta is a distinct offshore species. These differences may be attributed to the interspecific variation in morphology and motility between the species: M. alleni is stout and tube-dwelling, while M. minuta is fragile, small, and fairly motile. To corroborate these findings, sediment grains from tubes of M. alleni were classified using the Udden–Wentworth grain size scale and suggest sand is the key component for tube construction. Overall, this study highlights that sediment parameters for M. alleni have been misinterpreted and generalised in historical records, emphasising the importance of quantitative sediment analysis in defining the habitat of Magelona.

Didemnum vexillum is an aggressive, rapidly growing colonial ascidian and regarded as a global alien invasive species in temperate waters. It has recently become established in the western Mediterranean and the vectors of its introduction were assumed to be shipping or oyster trade. A dense settlement of it was encountered on nets of the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) cages placed at 60–65 m depths off the İzmir Peninsula (eastern Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean) in December 2022. It had considerably clogged net's eye openings, hindering water circulations inside cages. It had a vertical distributional pattern on 35 m long-nets, occurring solely on depths from surface down to 15 m, around where a summer thermocline develops. It has entirely replaced the native black mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis on nets. This colonial ascidian changed the routine cleaning procedure of nets in the farming. Three possible ways of its introduction to the eastern Mediterranean were proposed, but the most reasonable one is its secondary transfer via nets or ships from Malta. Mechanisms of its invasion biology and behaviour should be studied and monitored in the region.

An individual based model (IBM) of the female brown crab Cancer pagurus population exploited off South Devon, UK is described. Size dependent movement rules are ascribed to individuals based on previous observations of predominantly westward migration down the English Channel. Two additional versions of the movement rules explored whether the empirically derived rule was necessary to model the temporal and spatial distribution of crabs. Local crab movement was dependent on substrate type and water depth. Females prefer a soft substrate in which they can bury when temperatures are low or they have eggs to incubate. Crabs have size dependent depth preferences with larger crabs preferring greater depths. Two recruitment functions are used which relate the number of incoming crabs to the sea surface temperature five years earlier. Model outputs were tested against 10 years of logbook data from three crab fishers and against data from a year-long sampling programme on eight of the vessels exploiting the area. The model reproduces the long-term pattern which is mostly temperature driven. Spatial variation in catch is captured effectively by the model with more crabs being caught in the east of the area than the west and more caught offshore than inshore. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to the crab life cycle, management of the fishery and the potential effects of increasing temperatures.

High mortality of juvenile Holothuria scabra in seagrass nursery areas has been attributed to predation. In this study, laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the size of two seagrass–associated crabs, Thalamita crenata and Dardanus megistos, on the survival of juvenile sandfish at different sizes (1–10 g). Small juvenile sandfish (1–2 g) offered in field trials were more preferred by small Thalamita and large Dardanus. Non-lethal damage caused by both crabs were also evident, indicating differences in the mode of attack and consumption. The incidence of non-lethal wounds in medium and large juveniles in the laboratory indicate higher incidences of unsuccessful attacks by the crabs. Differences in consumption rate may be related to cheliped morphology and handling techniques, and activity patterns affecting encounter rates. Mortality rates of juvenile sandfish due to T. crenata (CW: 4.30–7.05 cm) ranged from 10–43%, while those by D. megistos (SL: 0.90–2.3 cm) was even higher at 34–53% after 24 h trials. This is the first report that a hermit crab D. megistos is a significant predator of juvenile sandfish. Results provide new insights on crab–soft-bodied prey interactions in tropical seagrass areas. These are also important considerations in stock restoration and ocean-based culture. Given that juveniles (≤10 g) are very vulnerable to predation by these common crab species, growing sandfish to larger sizes is essential prior to release in the field.

This paper reports the first record of the Atlantic soft pout Melanostigma atlanticum Koefoed, 1952, from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The specimen was caught in a pelagic trawl during a research trip carried out north of the island of Crete (Greece) in December 2019. The fish measured 66.1 mm in total length and weighed 0.810 g. The presence of M. atlanticum in the eastern Mediterranean Sea indicates that the geographical distribution of the species is not restricted only to the western part of it but spreads throughout the basin. Melanostigma atlanticum is typically found in the deep sea, where limited surveys and research have resulted in major data gaps. The lack of recording of the species until recently in the eastern Mediterranean Sea is attributed to the species' small size and slender body shape that allow it to escape traditional fishing gears, as well as the low trawling activity in depths greater than 400 m and the lack of surveys targeting the mesopelagic fish communities.

The family Syngnathidae contains 52 seahorse species, which inhabit a range of habitats including coral reefs, seagrass beds and coastal estuaries. The seahorse Hippocampus kelloggi is among the most widely distributed species, occurring from Indo-West Pacific to East Africa. This species was included in the IUCN Red List in 2017 and is classified as vulnerable according to A2cd criteria. In this study, three specimens collected from the central coast of Mozambique were investigated and based on morphology and mitochondrial subunit of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) were identified as H. kelloggi. These results confirmed for the first time the extensive range of occurrence of H. kelloggi on the central coast of Mozambique.

A new record of a white humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) was made off Papeete, Tahiti in July 2019. The individual was completely white, except for grey patterns on its body and on the ventral part of the fluke. The presence of different colourations indicates that this individual is not an albino but a leucistic individual. According to field observations, the individual was likely a juvenile or a subadult. It was seen breaching several times and travelled further north of Papeete, where the animal was recaptured off Arue. White individuals are rare and offer unique opportunities to understand whale movement patterns and potential population connectivity among humpback whale populations.

The objective of this paper was to characterize bycatch in an experimental fishery for Patagonian toothfish in Ecuador during 2017–2021. Diversity was analysed using Shannon, Margalef, Simpson, and Dominance indices. Bycatch representativity was calculated as the difference percentage between the target catch and non-target, in weight. The bycatch comprised 51 taxa and was composed primarily of fish. In addition, 12 species of pelagic habits (i.e. fishes and sharks) were also captured during the deployment/retrieval of fishing gear. The most frequent species (by number of individuals) were chimaeras (Hydrolagus melanophasma), grenadiers (Antimora rostrata, Coryphaenoides delsolari, and Coryphaenoides armatus), and sharks (Etmopterus granulosus and Centroscymnus owstonii). The diversity was medium low, according to the Shannon indices (0.5–1.8), with a negative trend for dominance and a positive trend for equitability.

Polychaetes from tropical ecosystems of the eastern Pacific have been poorly studied; thus, the aim of this study was to analyse their taxonomic composition in the southern Mexican Pacific shelf and to examine their biogeographic affinities. A total of 3741 specimens from 82 species, 52 genera, and 27 families were identified from 38 stations at 42–109 m depth. The Sedentaria group was more diverse (40 species, 48.8%) and abundant (1753 ind., 46.9%) compared to the Errantia (36 species, 43.9%; 346 ind., 9.2%) and the Basal Annelida groups (6 species, 7.3%; 1642 ind., 43.9%). The families Onuphidae (14 spp.), Spionidae (8 spp.), and Paraonidae (8 spp.) were the most diverse. The Amphinomidae and Spionidae accounted for 72.6% of the fauna; the remarkably high abundance of both families together is unusual in the tropical eastern Pacific. The polychaete species had high biogeographic affinities with the Mexican tropical Pacific ecoregion (45.1%), which has tropical conditions, and the Cortezian (29.3%), which has warm-temperate characteristics. Twelve amphiamerican species and ten with worldwide distribution were found. The tropical eastern Pacific is one of the world regions with the lowest number of polychaete records, thus underlining the importance of the taxonomic and biogeographic information provided here. The sampling effort should increase, since the non-parametric estimators indicated that 116–138 species were expected, instead of the 82 species actually found.

The spread of the brown seaweed Sargassum muticum is one of the best documented invasions of a non-native marine species. Observation of a potentially established population of S. muticum in the Orkney Islands archipelago, located off the northern coast of Scotland, was reported by recreational snorkellers in 2019 and 2020. The present study summarises a focussed investigation to confirm its presence and current local distribution, using data from 46 survey sites monitored as a part of the Orkney Islands Council Harbour Authority monitoring programme. Findings in this study represent the most northerly record of an established population of S. muticum in the United Kingdom, extending the latitudinal range in this country by 1.44° (159 km) northwards, and indicate only localised presence of this species. Analysis of a partial cytochrome oxidase I gene sequence confirmed the visual species identification. Possible vectors of introduction, gaps in the geographic range, local ecological and economic impacts, and the potential ameliorating factor of deep rockpools on wave exposed shores for S. muticum are discussed.

The reproduction of bopyrid isopod parasites is thought to occur immediately following host ecdysis, but direct observations supporting this hypothesis are limited. The aim of this study was to describe the reproductive behaviour of the bopyrid isopod Bopyrus crangorum relative to host ecdysis based on video recordings. Several hours after host ecdysis, biphasic moulting of female parasites was observed. The cuticle of the posterior body was shed before that of the anterior body at an interval of 1 h. Two hours after female moulting, the male repeatedly moved from its initial position between the female pleopods and stopped at the anterior end of the fifth oostegite, immediately above the gonopore. To our knowledge, this repeated visiting behaviour by males has not been previously observed in bopyrid isopods. Oviposition through the female gonopore occurred 33 min later. The male-removal experiment showed that females with their males removed after visits to the gonopore oviposited eggs, whereas females with their males removed before visits did not. We propose that repeated visits by males to the gonopore are attempts to inseminate the female. We hypothesised that sperm are released onto the external surface of each gonopore and that the eggs are fertilised as they pass through the opening, which would explain the synchronous development of fertilised eggs inside the marsupium. The present study provides new information on the life history of bopyrid isopods, which allows for a better understanding of the host–parasite relationship.

Changes in abundance and distribution of marine top predators can indicate environmental change or anthropogenic pressure requiring management response. Here, we used an extensive dataset (21 years) to conduct a spatial and temporal analysis of grey seal strandings in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, close to the southern edge of the breeding range of the species. A total of 2007 strandings were reported from 2000 to 2020, increasing by 474% from 35 to 201 individuals per year during this period. The continued rise in strandings was consistent across all life stages and timeframes (5, 10 and 20 years), underpinning the suggestion of increasing abundance in the region. The observed seasonality differed by life stage, coinciding with the increased presence of animals near the coast for key life phases such as breeding, moulting and pupping. Strandings are widely distributed across the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly; however, most strandings were recorded on the north coast of Cornwall (70%) where major pupping and haul out sites are found. Despite hosting several pupping and haul out sites, a small proportion was recorded on the Isles of Scilly (5%) where it is thought that strandings are particularly underreported. Describing baselines in magnitude of strandings and life-stage compositions across space and time allows future deviations in frequency, demographic composition or spatial distribution to be detected and investigated. We demonstrate the utility of long-term citizen science data to provide valuable and cost-effective information on the distribution and abundance of a highly mobile marine mammal.

Serranus hepatus is a bycatch species in the Mediterranean trawl fishery for which knowledge on biological features such as otolith morphology is generally poor in the Mediterranean Sea. In the present study, the weight–length relationship, age, growth and ten otolith morphometric variables of this species were investigated in two distant areas, the Eastern Ionian and southwestern Aegean Seas. Isometric growth in weight was defined in both areas. Growth parameters also did not differ between the two study areas. Six of the otolith variables (radius, otolith length, otolith width, otolith area, perimeter and ellipticity) showed a significant relationship with size without significant differences between the two areas. Significant differences between the two areas were only defined for five of the morphometric variables (otolith length, width and area being the most important). Further studies to discriminate between potential stocks of S. hepatus seem to be necessary, information that is needed for stock identification, stock assessment and fisheries management.

Accurate demographic data play a critical role in implementing conservation strategies and identifying key areas for species preservation. The population abundance and density of Sotalia guianensis were estimated in the estuarine-lagoon complex of Cananéia, Brazil, using distance sampling. The survey covered 1339.91 km with 83 h 05 min in effort. A half-normal model with cosine adjustments was evaluated as the best fit to estimate an abundance of 193 individuals (95% CI 158–237) and a density of 2.55 ind km−2. The majority of sightings occurred in the Baía de Trapandé (48.72%), followed by the Mar de Cananéia (32.72%) and Mar de Cubatão (18.56%), the three areas surrounding the Ilha de Cananéia. The study confirmed the heterogeneous distribution of the estuary and found that the Mar de Cananéia and the Baía de Trapandé were more densely populated, with 2.76 ind km−2 (95% CI 1.93–3.96) and 2.76 ind km−2 (95% CI 2.07–3.66), respectively, while the Mar de Cubatão was less densely populated, with 1.59 ind km−2 (95% CI 1.04–2.44). The findings support previous research indicating a stable population over the last few decades. The Cananéia estuary is an ecologically diverse region located between protected areas under different categories of environmental protection and harbours a significant population of S. guianensis, providing essential resources for feeding and breeding. Protected areas have proven to be effective tools for preserving both marine and terrestrial environments. Despite the close proximity to humans and constant threats, the study underscores the importance of the area for the conservation of the species.

Cryptic species in coral reefs, such as sea slugs, represent an important portion of their biodiversity, which is usually underestimated. Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) have been implemented to estimate cryptic diversity in coral reefs. Therefore, this research aimed to contribute to the southern Gulf of Mexico (GM) and the Caribbean Sea (CAR) coral reefs’ sea slugs’ diversity and distribution using ARMS as a collection method. Fifty-eight ARMS were placed at three coral reefs in the GM and CAR, recovered after 1–2 years and then, disassembled at the laboratory. Plates were individually placed in trays with seawater, where we searched for sea slugs. A total of 242 organisms were found belonging to 31 species; 20 of them were identified to the species level, while 11 were determined up to genus or family. More than half of the species (19) were found in Bajo de 10 (GM), while 15 species were found in the CAR localities. Unlike previous studies, we assessed sea slugs’ diversity exclusively by an indirect sampling method. In this work, we found 9.4% of the sea slug diversity recorded in the Caribbean, and we report four determined species for the first time in the country. New records of species, and even one family for the GM stress the gap of information that we still need to fulfil in the area. We recognize ARMS as a useful tool to find juvenile, cryptic and rare species of sea slugs, as well as to standardize their quantification and record their diversity.

Ctenophores are one of the least known invertebrate phyla in Mexico, especially the benthic forms in which studies are incomplete and infrequent, lacking information about their ecology and diversity. As part of the environmental monitoring project ‘Biodiversidad Marina de Yucatán’ conducted in the southern Gulf of Mexico and Mexican Caribbean Sea, the benthic ctenophore Vallicula multiformis (Coeloplanidae) was identified in association with green algae in the southern Gulf of Mexico, and on an autonomous reef monitoring structure in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. This finding represents the first record of the occurrence of a benthic ctenophore species in Mexican waters. We provide morphological characteristics of V. multiformis in both reef areas. Recording this species increases the known number of Mexican ctenophore fauna from 33 to 34 taxa and represents baseline information for the continuous study of the ecology and diversity of benthic ctenophores in Mexico.
