Members of the genus Actinia are familiar members of rocky shore communities across much of the world. However, to date, no Actinia species have been reported from the North American continent. Here, we report Actinia from an approximately 22 km length of the New Jersey, US shoreline, where it was first discovered in 2021. Morphology and DNA barcoding data (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I and nuclear internal transcribed spacer) indicate that these populations are Actinia equina. The presence of these populations close to major ports in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia suggests a probable introduction from shipping activities.

This study investigates the reproductive biology of Holothuria arguinensis over one year (December 2016 to December 2017) from two locations on the Atlantic coast of Morocco: Skhirat (North Atlantic) and Souiria K'dima (Central Atlantic), including the sex ratio, size at sexual maturity, and reproductive cycle. Monthly sampling was carried out, along with the collection of environmental and biometric data at each site. The sex ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1 at either study site. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) reached its peak during spring (April and May) for both sexes, and the spawning period was observed from summer to autumn (June–October) at both locations, suggest annual spawning. GSI was correlated with increasing or high chlorophyll-a concentrations, salinity, and spawning with rainfall periods. The estimated size at sexual maturity was 15.9 cm body length, 189.1 g total body weight, and 92.5 g gutted body weight. The minimum mean oocyte diameter was recorded during the recovery stage (31 ± 11 μm (mean ± SD) at Skhirat and 34 ± 23 μm (mean ± SD) at Souiria K'dima), while the highest values were observed in the partial spawning stage (112 ± 27 μm (mean ± SD) at Skhirat and 104 ± 19 μm (mean ± SD) at Souiria K'dima). This study highlights the need for further research to expand our knowledge of the biological and ecological characteristics of H. arguinensis populations, to facilitate the cultivation of juveniles in captivity, and to develop fishing regulations based on scientific findings. As a fishery management strategy, we suggest a closed season from April to October to protect the reproductive period of H. arguinensis on the Moroccan coast.

Ionella fimbriata sp. nov. is described from a pair of bopyrid isopods attached to a male specimen of the ghost shrimp Neocallichirus grandimana collected in Veracruz, Mexico. This is the fifth species belonging to Ionella but the first one recorded from the Atlantic Ocean, which represents an important extension of its distribution range because until now all Ionella species were known from the Pacific Ocean. Females of I. fimbriata sp. nov. can be differentiated from the others of the genus by a barbula with one stout, acute, falcate projection on each side and medial margin with triangular rounded projections; seven pairs of pereopods with elongate cuticular extensions on bases and ischia, and five pairs of tuberculated biramous pleopods of pinnate shape. Males can be recognized by five pairs of globose biramous pleopods, in which endopods are longer than exopods, and uropods longer than pleopods. Description and illustrations of both the female and male I. fimbriata sp. nov. are provided, as well as keys for both sexes of all species in the genus. The fecundity, embryo size and volume of I. fimbriata sp. nov. are reported.

While the giant anemone, Relicanthus daphneae, has been described as a characteristic inhabitant of the East Pacific Ocean since 1991, there are relatively few published occurrences worldwide. Here, we present the discovery and molecular verification of R. daphneae along the southern Central Indian Ridge, at the Rodriguez Triple Junction, and along the northern Southeast Indian Ridge within the BGR contract area for the exploration of marine massive sulphide deposits in the Indian Ocean. Individuals were solitary and attached exclusively to basalt hard substrates on the periphery of hydrothermal vent fields, at distances from active vents between 66 and 710 m. We report megafauna observed in close proximity to R. daphneae and, in one case, polychaetes on its tentacles and oral disc. For the first time, the giant anemone was observed capturing prey, a shrimp of the species Rimicaris kairei. Beyond this remark on the diet of these anemones, we also report other behavioural aspects for this species.

Morphological and molecular methods were used to describe a new species of Trapania Pruvot-Fol, 1931 from shallow water kelp forests on the north-central coast of Peru. The new species, Trapania huarmeyana sp. nov., is distinguished from other species along the Eastern Pacific by external morphological characters such as its translucent white body with brown stripes and small spots on the dorsum, blotches on the base of the extra-branchial processes, extra rhinophoral processes and gill branches. Internally, T. huarmeyana sp. nov. is distinguishable by several morphological characteristics of the radula, jaws and genital organs. Phylogenetic trees recovered using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analysis of DNA sequences support its distinct status and clarify its relationship to other species from the Eastern Pacific. This new species constitutes the first record of Trapania from the Humboldt Current Ecosystem, contributing to our understanding of the distribution of the genus in the South-eastern Pacific.

Oysters have unique life history strategies among molluscs and a long history in the fossil record. The Ostreid form, particularly species from the genus Crassostrea, facilitated the invasion into intertidal, estuarine habitats and reef formation. While there is general acknowledgement that oysters have highly variable growth, few studies have quantified variability in oyster allometry. This project aimed to (1) describe the proportional carbonate contributions from each valve and (2) examine length–weight relationships for shell and tissue across an estuarine gradient. We collected 1122 C. virginica from 48 reefs in eight tributaries and the main stem of the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay. On average, the left valve was responsible for 56% of the total weight of the shell, which was relatively consistent across a size range (24.9–172 mm). Nonlinear mixed-effects models for oyster length–weight relationships suggest oysters exhibit allometric growth (b < 3) and substantial inter-reef variation, where upriver reefs in some tributaries appear to produce less shell and tissue biomass on average for a given size. We posit this variability may be due to differences in local conditions, particularly salinity, turbidity, and reef density. Allometric growth maximizes shell production and surface area for oyster settlement, both of which contribute to maintaining the underlying reef structure. Rapid growth and intraspecific plasticity in shell morphology enabled oysters to invade and establish reefs as estuaries moved in concert with changes in sea level over evolutionary time.

A new diosaccin species, Paramphiascella aestuarii n. sp., was found in sediment samples from a shallow estuary in north-western Mexico. The morphological distinction between the new species and its congeners is discussed. The new species is morphologically close to P. calcarifer (Sewell, 1940) from the Maldivian Archipelago. However, P. calcarifer differs from the new species in the proximal and subdistal outer spiniform processes on the female second antennulary segment. Bayesian inference based upon molecular characterization (nuclear 18S ribosomal DNA and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I genes) places the new species within a large group of Diosaccinae Sars G.O., 1906, for which molecular sequences are available, composed of Typhlamphiascus typhlops (Sars G.O., 1906), Rhyncholagena cuspis Yeom and Lee, 2023, Robertgurneya jejuensis Yeom and Lee, 2022, and Amphiascoides Nicholls, 1941. The close relationship with Amphiascoides as its sister genus, only morphologically distinct in the structure of the second endopodal segment of the male second swimming leg, is also confirmed.

Sea anemones represent a highly abundant and diverse group within marine ecosystems, yet biodiversity analyses in Peru remain comparatively scarce. To enhance the inventory of biodiversity and its distribution, a comprehensive review of the available literature on species from Peruvian waters was performed. Only seven well-documented species (i.e. verified records) were found representing 31.8% of the total species reported in Peru (22 spp.) These seven species are Anthothoe chilensis, Phymactis papillosa (formerly reported as P. clematis), Phymanthea pluvia, Oulactis concinnata, Antholoba achates, Anemonia alicemartinae and Oulactis coliumensis. Overall, specimens were identified in 68 localities, the Actiniidae family exhibited the highest diversity with five species (71.4% of the total), whereas Actinostolidae and Sagartiidae each contributed one species (14.3%). The highest number of scientific publications (18) corresponds to the Lima region, with over twice as many studies as other regions, it is followed by Ica (8), Áncash (7), La Libertad (6), Tumbes (5), Piura (4), Arequipa (3), Tacna (2), Moquegua (1) and Lambayeque (1). However, the studied localities are unevenly distributed across regions. Rocky substrata (~55% of records) are the most reported habitat for sea anemones in Peru, including exposed vertical walls and sheltered crevices, caves and areas under rocks. Despite wide spatial distribution, our results indicate several under-researched regions. The growing interest in these benthic invertebrates over recent decades has revealed over 50% of reported biodiversity, yet many doubts about species described long ago remain. Potential biases in existing data require identification along with further analysis of environmental information.

Recent increases in seawater temperature have been predicted to induce a poleward shift in the distribution of marine organisms. This study reports the first record of the winter appearance of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in a habitat restricted to summer and autumn in northeast Japan. One individual was observed by a diver at Tomari-hama on the Oshika Peninsula (38°21′ N, 141°31′ E) on 28 December 2023. Another individual was incidentally captured in a fixed net near Tashiro-jima on the Oshika Peninsula (38°17′ N, 141°24′ E) on 18 April 2024 with a straight carapace length of 41.5 cm and body mass of 6.4 kg. Because previous bycatch surveys show that the earliest and latest appearances of green turtles in this area occurred in late June and late November, respectively, the occurrences reported in this study were two months earlier and one month later. The sea surface temperatures at the time of these observations were 15.9 and 16.0°C, respectively, which are 3.5 and 6.6°C higher than those of normal years. The unexpected winter appearance of green turtles implies an expansion of the habitable period for this species in response to climate change, and it, therefore, is emphasizes the need for continued monitoring surveys to collect additional sightings.

The genus Maculabatis is a group of batoid rays from the Dasyatidae family, consisting of two main complexes: the gerrardi (spotted species) and the pastinacoides (plain species). This study investigated the diversity within the Maculabatis gerrardi complex, revealing the presence of two distinct geographical lineages, with a potential new species captured off the coast of Mozambique. Molecular analysis showed a significant divergence: COI sequences from Mozambique specimens exhibited over 99% similarity with M. gerrardi from South Africa but more than 2% divergence from those in the Indo-Pacific. Phylogenetic analysis identified two distinct subclades, suggesting at least two hidden lineages within the genus Maculabatis and consequently possible new undescribed species within M. gerrardi complex. These findings emphasize the importance of conducting additional research that integrates both morphological and molecular methods to better understand the group's diversity and evolutionary dynamics, ultimately supporting the development of effective conservation strategies.

The West Atlantic trumpetfish Aulostomus maculatus is a species of little commercial importance, but it is frequently used as a study organism in behavioural ecology, and it has been traded in the aquarium industry to some extent. The adult life stage is well described, however its early life history is nearly unknown. This paper provides the first description of post-flexion larvae of A. maculatus, including detailed illustrations, photographs, morphological data, and collection site data of specimens collected during a multipurpose research survey conducted within the Sargasso Sea Subtropical Convergence Zone. The collection site also implies a geographic range expansion, off the continental shelf, of the pelagic larvae stage. This paper hence advances the scientific knowledge about the early life stages, distribution and ecology of this species.

In the present study, we assessed the sponge fauna, sponge-associated, and planktonic prokaryotic communities residing in Burgers' Zoo Ocean aquarium, Arnhem, the Netherlands. The Ocean aquarium consisted of separate displays and life support systems, and included fish-only systems in addition to a large, 750,000 L tank containing a living, tropical coral reef ecosystem. Sponges were observed throughout the aquarium system and were identified as belonging to the genera Chalinula, Chondrilla, Chondrosia, Cinachyrella, Stylissa, Suberites and Tethya. There was a highly significant difference in composition between sponge-associated and planktonic prokaryotic communities. The tanks in which the sponges were sampled appeared to have a secondary structural effect on prokaryotic composition with sponges and water from the same tanks sharing several microorganisms. Both sponge-associated and planktonic prokaryotic communities housed prokaryotic taxa, which were highly similar to microorganisms previously recorded in sponges or coral reef environments, including taxa potentially involved in nitrification, denitrification, sulphur oxidation, and antibiotic biosynthesis. Several abundant microorganisms were only recorded in sponges and these may play a role in maintaining water quality in the aquarium system. Potential pathogens, e.g. related to Photobacterium damselae, and beneficial organisms, e.g. related to Pseudovibrio denitrificans, were also detected. The present study showed that Burgers' Zoo Ocean aquarium housed diverse free-living and host-associated prokaryotic communities. Future research should focus on identifying conditions and microbial communities conducive to a healthy aquarium environment.

Small and medium pelagic fish (SMPF, i.e. Scomber colias, Trachurus spp, Sardina pilchardus, and Sardinella spp) in the Canary Islands are mainly targeted by the artisanal purse-seine fleet. The waters in the archipelago (located in the coastal transition zone of the Canary Current Eastern Boundary Upwelling System) are monitored since the late nineties by a hydrographic section (RAPROCAN) designed to study the temporal variability of the eastern subtropical gyre. In this study we analyse the relationship between the SMPF abundance assumed from official sale notes (reported since 2007) and several oceanographic parameters obtained for the outermost water layer (Sea Surface Temperature, SST, and concentration of chlorophyll a, Chla) and from the 200–800 m depth waters (Sea Temperature, ST_200–800, and salinity, Salinity_200–800). Except for SST, statistically significant correlations occur between environmental variables and SMPF landings when one-year time-lag is considered, matching with the time period necessary for these species to attain legal catchable sizes and, hence, being catchable by the fishery. However, in the GLM only Chla resulted a significant explaining variable for the SMPF landings during the following year, probably because this strong correlation overshadows the ST_200–800 influence. Keeping the monitoring systems is crucial to understand, foresee and anticipate potential variations in the fishery resources and to aim the sustainable exploitation of the SMPF populations, even more challenging in the current climate change scenario.

Harbour seals were extensively hunted in Denmark, but have only been driven to local extinction in one larger area, the South Funen Archipelago and Little Belt, where the species has been absent throughout the 20th century. Despite high growth rates of the Danish harbour seal populations after protection from hunting in 1976, seals have only been observed sporadically in the South Funen Archipelago and Little Belt until recent years, where recolonisation now causes conflicts with fisheries. Here, we review historical sources documenting the local extinction of harbour seals in the area during the 19th century and report the results of aerial surveys of haul-out sites during moulting seasons of 2021–2023 and pupping seasons of 2022 and 2023. Historical sources reveal that seal hunting was a common practice in southern Denmark, but catches dwindled to rarities during the 19th century. During recent surveys, seals were detected at six of the identified potential haul-out sites. Around Aarø Island, an average of 141 (range: 92–186) harbour seals were recorded over four moulting season surveys, constituting the majority (90%) of the total counts of the surveyed area. During the pupping seasons, a total of five pups was encountered at two different haulouts. As none of the haulouts are protected during the pupping and breeding seasons, protective measures may support this recolonisation of the historic harbour seal breeding range.

Understanding the relationships between cetaceans and their environment is crucial for conservation. This study examined humpback whales in Bahía de Banderas, Mexico, identifying key calving habitats. From 2018 to 2023, 1066 sightings were recorded, including 242 mother–calf groups, 109 mating groups, and 715 other groups. Spatial analysis revealed a non-random distribution; both the Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney tests detected significant differences (P < 0.05) in site preferences. Calving mothers favoured habitats with a mean depth of 59 m and a distance of 2 km from the coast, while mating groups preferred locations at 126 m and 4 km, and other groups chose areas at 149 m and 4 km. All groups were found in relatively flat areas around 2° seafloor slope. A dispersion test indicated a significant relationship between the location of calving mothers and environmental factors. K-means clustering showed 83.6% of calving mothers' sightings at depths less than 40 m and 2 km from the coast. Ensemble species distribution models identified three critical calving areas: one large area (261.8 km2) along the north coast and two smaller areas (9.5 and 5.4 km2) at the southern end of the bay. This study highlights Bahía de Banderas as a vital breeding habitat for humpback whales, providing insights for conservation strategies to protect calving grounds during the breeding season.

A single Stygiomedusa gigantea was caught by demersal crab trawl off Namibia at a fishing depth of 750 m. Although widely considered to be globally distributed in meso- and bathy-pelagic waters, this represents the first record of the species from the SE Atlantic and only the second from around Africa. The photographed specimen differs slightly from previous observations and attention is drawn to accurately recording future material.

Synthesising knowledge on the health of marine ecosystems and the human activities is crucial to informing holistic marine management. In many coastal states, however, research is conducted in an ad hoc manner and rarely compiled into accessible repositories making it challenging for marine managers to identify knowledge gaps when allocating resources. Here we conduct a structured review of existing literature to identify the current state of marine and coastal knowledge in the Isles of Scilly, an oceanic archipelago in the UK. The archipelago's marine flora and fauna are biogeographically unique in the Northeast Atlantic, with a distinct mosaic of warm and cold temperate habitats and species and are also considered a rare example of a near pristine marine environment in the otherwise highly degraded Northeast Atlantic Ocean. We found 150 sources relating to the marine biodiversity and relevant human activities in the Isles of Scilly with increasing diversification of research topics in recent years. Sources however remain dominated by specific taxa and habitats, suggesting the Isles of Scilly would particularly benefit from future research into: (1) anthropogenic impacts associated with warming waters and intense seasonal vessel activity; (2) development of repeatable survey protocols that can underpin long-term, ecosystem-based monitoring and management (notably for reef and sediment habitats and the European spiny lobster); and (3) data gaps associated with marine teleost fish and elasmobranch communities including identifying core habitat. This review can therefore act as a baseline biological synthesis for the region and importantly, can inform future research priorities.

Sea turtle populations have significantly declined in recent years due to anthropogenic causes. Historical stranding records in the Canary Islands archipelago (Spain) reveal a high frequency of Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas strandings. Our study aims to comprehensively characterize and explore these stranding records. Additionally, we have investigated the interactions between sea turtles and the island's professional fishers, seeking insights from small-scale artisanal fishers to understand the current state of sea turtle populations. The results have shown that Tenerife stands out with the highest number of sea turtle strandings, recording 1875 strandings over a span of 23 years. The primary cause of sea turtle stranding's is the interaction with fishing gear, specifically nets and hooks. Moreover, our research has highlighted the need for improved knowledge and training on how to handle stranded sea turtles within the fishing sector. Consequently, raising awareness and implementing conservation plans for sea turtle populations in Tenerife is of outmost importance in addressing and improving the current situation.

The importance of habitat-forming species, particularly cold-water corals like Dendrophyllia ramea, cannot be overstated as they provide crucial physical structures that offer shelter, food, and breeding habitat for a range of other species. We studied the spatial distribution and abundance of D. ramea, its associated species and the impact of human activities in a population of the Herradura, Granada in the western Mediterranean. Video transects were conducted at different depths, and epibiont samples were collected to describe the coral assemblage and the diversity of associated organisms. Dendrophyllia ramea presented high abundances at an unusually shallow depth in the Mediterranean, ranging from 30 to 48 m, despite typically being found between 50 and 500 m, with recordings indicating occurrences as deep as 1000 m, and hosting a high number of epibionts and macro-benthic organisms associated with coral reefs. Bryozoans showed a close relationship with D. ramea as they are important components of both the reef and the epibiont community. This study identified 63 new species and 15 new genera associated with cold-water corals. This study showed the importance of D. ramea as a nursery site, even for other habitat-forming species. The major threat to this community is human activity (fishing, littering and free anchoring), with the most abundant types of waste being rubber, glass/ceramics, and plastic polymers, and many fishing lines and nets damaging the corals. Overall, this study emphasises the urgent need to protect cold-water corals and their associated species and reduce the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems.
