Accurate demographic data play a critical role in implementing conservation strategies and identifying key areas for species preservation. The population abundance and density of Sotalia guianensis were estimated in the estuarine-lagoon complex of Cananéia, Brazil, using distance sampling. The survey covered 1339.91 km with 83 h 05 min in effort. A half-normal model with cosine adjustments was evaluated as the best fit to estimate an abundance of 193 individuals (95% CI 158–237) and a density of 2.55 ind km−2. The majority of sightings occurred in the Baía de Trapandé (48.72%), followed by the Mar de Cananéia (32.72%) and Mar de Cubatão (18.56%), the three areas surrounding the Ilha de Cananéia. The study confirmed the heterogeneous distribution of the estuary and found that the Mar de Cananéia and the Baía de Trapandé were more densely populated, with 2.76 ind km−2 (95% CI 1.93–3.96) and 2.76 ind km−2 (95% CI 2.07–3.66), respectively, while the Mar de Cubatão was less densely populated, with 1.59 ind km−2 (95% CI 1.04–2.44). The findings support previous research indicating a stable population over the last few decades. The Cananéia estuary is an ecologically diverse region located between protected areas under different categories of environmental protection and harbours a significant population of S. guianensis, providing essential resources for feeding and breeding. Protected areas have proven to be effective tools for preserving both marine and terrestrial environments. Despite the close proximity to humans and constant threats, the study underscores the importance of the area for the conservation of the species.

Cryptic species in coral reefs, such as sea slugs, represent an important portion of their biodiversity, which is usually underestimated. Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) have been implemented to estimate cryptic diversity in coral reefs. Therefore, this research aimed to contribute to the southern Gulf of Mexico (GM) and the Caribbean Sea (CAR) coral reefs’ sea slugs’ diversity and distribution using ARMS as a collection method. Fifty-eight ARMS were placed at three coral reefs in the GM and CAR, recovered after 1–2 years and then, disassembled at the laboratory. Plates were individually placed in trays with seawater, where we searched for sea slugs. A total of 242 organisms were found belonging to 31 species; 20 of them were identified to the species level, while 11 were determined up to genus or family. More than half of the species (19) were found in Bajo de 10 (GM), while 15 species were found in the CAR localities. Unlike previous studies, we assessed sea slugs’ diversity exclusively by an indirect sampling method. In this work, we found 9.4% of the sea slug diversity recorded in the Caribbean, and we report four determined species for the first time in the country. New records of species, and even one family for the GM stress the gap of information that we still need to fulfil in the area. We recognize ARMS as a useful tool to find juvenile, cryptic and rare species of sea slugs, as well as to standardize their quantification and record their diversity.

Ctenophores are one of the least known invertebrate phyla in Mexico, especially the benthic forms in which studies are incomplete and infrequent, lacking information about their ecology and diversity. As part of the environmental monitoring project ‘Biodiversidad Marina de Yucatán’ conducted in the southern Gulf of Mexico and Mexican Caribbean Sea, the benthic ctenophore Vallicula multiformis (Coeloplanidae) was identified in association with green algae in the southern Gulf of Mexico, and on an autonomous reef monitoring structure in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. This finding represents the first record of the occurrence of a benthic ctenophore species in Mexican waters. We provide morphological characteristics of V. multiformis in both reef areas. Recording this species increases the known number of Mexican ctenophore fauna from 33 to 34 taxa and represents baseline information for the continuous study of the ecology and diversity of benthic ctenophores in Mexico.

Cetaceans in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean are poorly studied. We present results from a 2 week ship-based survey from Cape Town to Vema Seamount (980 km to the west) during October–November 2019, including visual and towed-hydrophone observations from the vessel, and 10 days of acoustic monitoring on the seamount. Fifty-two hours of visual surveys resulted in 39 encounters of whale groups including seven of humpback, six of fin and one sei whale, as well as four unidentified baleen whales, 18 unidentified balaenopterid whales and four unidentified odontocetes. Two humpback whales at the seamount were engaged in possible feeding behaviour. A large aggregation of mostly fin whales was observed near the continental shelf edge (22 encounters over a 70 × 50 km2 area, six fin, one sei whale, 15 not confirmed to species), an historic whaling ground for both fin and sei whales. Towed-hydrophone data (78.7 h) detected five groups of sperm whales, 45 of delphinids, one beaked whale and no Kogiids. Acoustic data from the seamount detected calls from several baleen whale species including humpback whale non-song calls, Antarctic minke ‘bioduck’ calls, sei whale down-sweep calls and a likely Bryde's whale call. Two call types could not be assigned to species, including the most detected – a simple frequency-modulated call with peak power around 130 Hz. This study contributes to an improved understanding of cetacean occurrence in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean and highlights the need for more research to improve identification of cetacean vocalizations in the region.

The eastern rock lobster (Sagmariasus verreauxi) inhabits the east coast of Australia from southern Queensland to the South Australian border including Tasmania, with the highest abundances found in New South Wales. Changes in strength, duration, and intensity of the eastern Australian current have expanded the species range southward but until recently, records of the species in western regions of south-eastern Australia were rare. Here, we report the first ever verified records of S. verreauxi in the northern zone rock lobster fishery of South Australia, which are the most westerly records ever documented in terms of overall distribution for this species. We hypothesise that two westward flowing systems, the offshore Flinders current and the inshore coastal current may be possible mechanisms for larval transport.

We deployed jaws of the common thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus) on the seafloor at ~1000 m depth off Monterey California for 8 months. The jaws disintegrated, with all the hyaline cartilage disappearing, leaving some fragments of tessellated cartilage and the teeth. Two different Osedax species, O. packardorum and O. talkovici were found to have bored into the roots of some of the teeth, and were using the dentin pulp, which is rich in collagen, as a food source. The enameloid crowns of the shark teeth and the tessellated cartilage showed no signs of Osedax activity. This is the first demonstration of Osedax exploiting a source of food that is not bone. This raises questions as to the original food source of Osedax ‘bone worms'. Examination for the presence of Osedax in the skeletons and teeth of Mesozoic and possibly even Palaeozoic fossil sharks, bony fish and reptiles is warranted.

We present the distribution of the parthenopid crab species Distolambrus maltzami from the North-east Atlantic with a first record from UK seas. The distribution of D. maltzami in the Celtic-Biscay area in the eastern Atlantic, is both described based on recent records from survey data and estimated from modelling its environmental niche. The predicted probability of occurrence is greatest in areas with fluctuating tidal currents and water masses that are rich in chlorophyll-a, cold (minimum bottom temperature lower than 10°C) and oxygen-rich. We include a simple key to distinguish the two parthenopid crab species previously encountered in the region and highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to fisheries data collection.

Stygiopontius senokuchiae is a hydrothermal-vent-specific copepod species (Dirivultidae, Siphonostomatoida) and abundantly distributes near vent orifices. This species is thought to have an early juvenile planktic stage, and previous studies using bulk tissue stable-isotope and radioisotope data suggest that adults ingest chemoautotrophic microbes growing on vent chimneys. However, ontogenetic changes in their diets have not been investigated. We analysed gut contents of copepodite I to adult stages of S. senokuchiae collected from a hydrothermal-vent chimney at the Izu-Ogasawara Arc to check for the presence of bacterial cells in oral tubes and guts. We compared these results with an unidentified co-occurring calanoid and a species of Ectinosoma (Harpacticoida) and to other Siphonostomatoid copepods, namely Hatschekia labracis (Hatschekiidae), which was attached to a scarbreast tuskfin (Choerodon azurio, Labridae), and Asterocheres sp. 1 (Asterocheridae), which was attached to a spirastrellid sponge. Carbon isotope ratios of S. senokuchiae at different stages and Ectinosoma were measured to complement the nutritional insights obtained from gut-content analysis. Our results clearly showed that most S. senokuchiae individuals possessed bacteria in the oral tube or gut regardless of growth stage, whereas the coexisting Ectinosoma and calanoid did not. The carbon isotopic compositions confirmed that S. senokuchiae gains its nutrition from chemoautotrophic bacteria that use the rTCA carbon-fixation pathway. Comparisons with other Siphonostomatoida copepods suggest that Dirivultidae are specifically adapted to feed on bacteria at hydrothermal-vent chimneys, allowing their high dominance and evolutionary success in these habitats.

Molluscs are a diverse phylum in coastal lagoons because the numerous taxa collectively display broad ranges of optima and tolerance with respect to ambient conditions. We report on the taxonomic composition, habitat preferences and feeding guilds of molluscs from Río Lagartos coastal lagoon, Mexico. Molluscs were collected in the rainy season (September/October 2017), during the winter (Nortes) season (February 2018) and at the end of the warm, dry season (May 2018). Samples were taken using a Ponar dredge, a cylindrical PVC core barrel, or a beach seine. We studied the abiotic characteristics (sediment grain-size distributions, submersed aquatic vegetation abundance and salinity) to explore assemblage differences across the broad salinity gradient that characterizes the system (~30–78 PSU). Molluscs were represented by 39 species, 34 genera, 23 families and two classes. Stenohaline species were more numerous overall than euryhaline species, but their occurrence in samples was low (<20% of the samples). Stenohaline taxa lived primarily in environments characterized by marine salinity, and few were found under hypersaline conditions. We collected a smaller number of species than did studies carried out in the lagoon >35 years ago. Species accumulation curves revealed that the full species richness was not captured in our study. Euhaline environments displayed greater mollusc species richness and had a larger proportion of amount (mass) of submersed aquatic vegetation. In the hypersaline environments, species richness may be favoured by the lower dominance of sands. Suspension feeders were the most diverse group in both the euhaline and hyperhaline environments.

Recent advances in molecular phylogeny and increasing numbers of studies carried out worldwide in subtidal and deep-water marine sites have confirmed that monothalamid foraminifera represent a significant component of the marine benthos. Fewer studies have been carried out on monothalamids in littoral zones, and here I describe more than 13 novel morphotypes of soft-walled monothalamids found at several intertidal sites in the Lorn area of north-west Scotland. Samples of sediment were collected from these areas and monothalamid tests were removed from the mud by direct manipulation with brushes, by coverslip-capture, by capture with a magnet for those with magnetic particles or by extraction from mud balls. Attached forms of tests from the same sites were isolated from collected seaweed blades, pebbles and decaying shells. Monothalamids were observed live and photographed in their natural colours, followed by examination after preservation in alcohol and embedding in glycerol. The greatest diversity of species was found to be at estuaries near to the mouths of the sea lochs, and the abundance of some of the species varied with the time of the year, being different for each species. The observed taxa included a Vellaria sp. and Psammophaga sp., two allogromiids, three saccamminids and six undetermined species; each assemblage of specimens may have contained more than one species not readily discernible by morphological characteristics alone. Taxonomic parallels between the described specimens and those in reports for other parts of the world and in deeper waters in western Scotland are discussed.

The implementation of consistent and continuous biodiversity survey efforts over a long period of time is imperative to the examination of temporal diversity patterns and the evaluation of existing conservation measures' effectiveness. In Hong Kong, a marine biodiversity hotspot in the South China Sea, reef fish diversity has been poorly documented due to inconsistent and sparse biodiversity surveys, posing considerable challenges to long-term monitoring of biodiversity dynamics. To fill in the data gap, regular scuba underwater visual surveys were conducted across 55 dive sites in Hong Kong during the wet seasons from 2018–2021. After ~3171 hours of underwater survey, 31 reef fish species from 14 families that are new to Hong Kong have been recorded, including species from Acanthuridae, Chaetodontidae, Diodontidae, Gobiidae, Labridae, Mullidae, Nemipteridae, Pinguipedidae, Pomacanthidae, Pomacentridae, Ptereleotridae, Solenostomidae, Tetraodontidae and Tetrarogidae. As Hong Kong sits within the natural distribution range of the newly recorded species, the possibility of artificial release was eliminated after careful consideration. These species were all found outside the currently established Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Hong Kong, indicating the need for comprehensive research to identify potential marine reef fish hotspots in areas that are unprotected thus far. Our findings demonstrate the need to establish a long-term monitoring programme that can fill in data gaps of local marine biodiversity to enable the establishment of effective MPAs, and to lay down a baseline for future research and monitoring, so as to safeguard Hong Kong's marine biodiversity in the long term.

Marine megafauna occurrence was recorded in the deep-sea region bordering the abyssal plain ~400 km north-west of Luanda, Angola. The survey took place during an Environmental Baseline Study (EBS), prior to drilling exploration activities, with the goal of characterizing the habitat and biodiversity of the region. Offshore shipboard surveys were conducted during September 2018 in water depths ranging from 2350–3850 m. We recorded daytime sightings of marine mammals and sea turtles and at night made audio recordings using passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) methods focused on capturing the sounds of vocalizing marine mammals. A variety of species were visually detected, including the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), common dolphin (Delphinus spp.), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), Atlantic spotted dolphin (S. frontalis), and olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Acoustic click bouts similar to those made by several odontocete species, possibly including beaked whales, were recorded within the 25–48 kHz range. The humpback whale was the most frequently sighted species, accounting for 56% of mammal sightings, indicating a potential far offshore migratory habitat in this region. Most notably, right whales (probable Eubalaena australis) were visually observed. This is the first confirmed record of right whales in Angolan waters since the early 1900s. As development expands in this offshore region, these data can usefully inform future monitoring and mitigation strategies focused on minimizing impacts to wildlife.

The first record of the parasite Alebion carchariae in the waters of Ascension Island collected from Galapagos sharks, Carcharhinus galapagensis (Carcharhinidae), is described. No previous record of this parasite exists for Ascension Island, nor have Galapagos sharks previously been listed as a host. Specimens of A. carchariae were identified using morphological techniques and DNA barcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I subunit (COI) gene. This study provides the first COI barcodes for this species and a brief review of known hosts. We recommend further research to understand the life cycle of this parasite, its plasticity in terms of host/habitat selection, and to determine the implications of its presence on the hosts it inhabits.

Deployment of artificial wreck reefs (AWRs) near natural reefs can influence fish assemblages on both reefs. Here, we assessed fish attitudes (abundances, biomass and species richness) according to different level complexity areas of wrecks, feeding guilds of fish and body size of fish of two identical AWRs deployed at the same depth (36.6 m) and different distances from natural reefs. Scuba divers used visual census method to sample fish communities at wrecks for two years. An average of 2346 individuals per dive belonging to 52 species were observed on wrecks combined. Both mean fish abundance and mean biomass did not differ significantly between wrecks. Mean species richness was significantly greater at 9 Eylül than Alaybey. Planktivore was the most abundant feeding guild on wrecks, and its abundance statistically differed between AWRs. The comparisons of fish assemblages at the different level complexity areas of the wrecks show differences, the highest mean abundances were recorded at the areas of low complexity of the wrecks. The results of this study show that although deploying artificial wreck reefs near to natural rocky reefs catalyses fish colonization, it does not present an exact influence on the fish communities of AWRs. We have not known yet how creating an artificial wreck reef affects fish community of natural reefs. With giving extra importance to the choice of deployment area, AWR applications may transform to win-win projects for both the marine environment and recreational users, such as divers and anglers.

The coral reefs of the Pitcairn Islands are in one of the most remote areas of the Pacific Ocean, and yet they are exposed to the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. The Pitcairn Islands Marine Protected Area was designated in 2016 and is one of the largest in the world, but the marine environment around these highly isolated islands remains poorly documented. Evidence collated here indicates that while the Pitcairn Islands' reefs have thus far been relatively sheltered from the effect of warming sea temperatures, there is substantial risk of future coral decalcification due to ocean acidification. The projected acceleration in the rate of sea level rise, and the reefs' exposure to risks from distant ocean swells and cold-water intrusions, add further uncertainty as to whether these islands and their reefs will continue to adapt and persist into the future. Coordinated action within the context of the Pitcairn Islands Marine Protected Area can help enhance the resilience of the reefs in the Pitcairn Islands. Options include management of other human pressures, control of invasive species and active reef interventions. More research, however, is needed in order to better assess what are the most appropriate and feasible options to protect these reefs.

This report provides the first confirmed identifications of wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) in the Red Sea, expanding the known ranges of these species into the basin. Potential mechanisms responsible for the lack of regional documentation of the two species are further discussed. These findings illustrate the need for systematic biodiversity surveys of pelagic fish assemblages in the Red Sea.

Fisheries constitute a major threat to marine mammals globally. To evaluate the impact of small-scale fisheries (SSF) on regional under-studied marine mammal populations, we tested a novel and cost-effective approach at three data-limited locations of the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea. Using off-the-shelf GPS loggers to track SSF activities and systematic surveys to map the distribution of marine mammals, we assessed the probability of co-occurrence between SSF and marine mammals by reporting areas of spatial overlap. Spatial overlap between SSF and the core zones of marine mammal distribution (ranging between 21.85–35.4%) was observed in all three locations, indicating potential interaction hotspots. The probability of co-occurrence in those areas varied from 0.5–2.9% depending on the species. The resulting overlap between fishing activity and marine mammals may pose a threat in both directions: higher risk of species entanglement and economic burden on fishers due to gear damage. Despite the spatial and temporal limitations of this pilot study, the proposed approach can provide baseline information on SSF-marine mammal co-occurrence, particularly in financially limited regions. If applied on a larger scale, our method may be used to inform future conservation actions with the aim to reduce pressure on key populations.

Suckerfish attached to dolphin species have been extensively reported worldwide, yet such association has been rarely seen in the tropical and shallow waters of South America. In Brazil, the Guiana dolphin Sotalia guianensis is distributed along almost the entire extent of the coast and only one case of association with suckerfish has been published. Here we report on a sharksucker Echeneis naucrates associated with a young Guiana dolphin on the north-eastern coast of Brazil. The juvenile dolphin with an attached sharksucker was observed on two occasions separated by a 47-day period; we hypothesize the occurrence of host attachment fidelity. The present report adds information to better discuss the ecological interactions between echeneids and dolphins, and expands the baseline information on cetacean species serving as host to suckerfish.
