We study the equation dY(t)/dt = f(Y(t), Eh(Y(t))) for random initial conditions, where E denotes the expected value. It turns out that in contrast to the deterministic case local Lipschitz continuity of f and h are not sufficient to ensure uniqueness of the solutions. Finally we also state some sufficient conditions for uniqueness.

We construct a functional calculus, g → g(A), for functions, g, that are the sum of a Stieltjes function and a nonnegative operator monotone function, and unbounded linear operators, A, whose resolvent set contains (−∞, 0), with {‖r(r + A)−1‖ ¦ r > 0} bounded. For such functions g, we show that –g(A) generates a bounded holomorphic strongly continuous semigroup of angle θ, whenever –A does.

We show that, for any Bernstein function f, − f(A) generates a bounded holomorphic strongly continuous semigroup of angle π/2, whenever − A does.

We also prove some new results about the Bochner-Phillips functional calculus. We discuss the relationship between fractional powers and our construction.

In this paper an ill-posed problem for the heat equation is investigated. Solutions u to the equation ut – uxx = 0, which are approximately known on the positive half-axis t = 0 and on some vertical lines x = x1,…, x = xn, are considered and stability estimates of these solutions are presented. We assume an a priori bound, governing the heat flow across the boundary x = 0.

Let T be a bounded linear operator acting on a Hilbert space H. The B-Weyl spectrum of T is the set σBW(T) of all λ ∈ Сsuch that T − λI is not a B-Fredholm operator of index 0. Let E(T) be the set of all isolated eigenvalues of T. The aim of this paper is to show that if T is a hyponormal operator, then T satisfies generalized Weyl's theorem σBW(T) = σ(T)/E(T), and the B-Weyl spectrum σBW(T) of T satisfies the spectral mapping theorem. We also consider commuting finite rank perturbations of operators satisfying generalized Weyl's theorem.

We consider in this paper only commutative rings with identity. When R is considered as a subring of S it will always be assumed that R and S have the same identity. If R is a subring of S an element s of S said to be integral over R if s is the root of a monic polynomial with coefficients in R. Following Krull [8], p. 102, we say s is almost integral over R provided all powers of s belong to a finite R-submodule of S. If R1 is the set of elements of S almost integral over R we say R1 is the complete integral closure of R in S.

The classical theory of canonical correlation is concerned with a standard description of the relationship between any linear combination of ρ random variables xs, and any linear combination of q random variables yt insofar as this relation can be described in terms of correlation. Lancaster [1] has extended this theory, for p = q = 1, to include a description of the correlation of any function of a random variable x and any function of a random variable y (both functions having finite variance) for a class of joint distributions of x and y which is very general. It is the purpose of this paper to derive Lancaster's results from general theorems concerning the spectral decomposition of operators on a Hilbert space. These theorems lend themselves easily to the generalisation of the theory to situations where p and q are not finite. In the case of Gaussian, stationary, processes this generalisation is equivalent to the classical spectral theory and corresponds to a canonical reduction of a (finite) sample of data which is basic. The theory also then extends to any number of processes. In the Gaussian case, also, the present discussion-is connected with the results of Gelfand and Yaglom [2] relating to the amount of information in one random process about another.

We prove Hahn-Banach type theorems for linear functionals with values in R∪{+∞} on ordered cones, Using the concept of locally convex cones, we provide a sandwich theorem involving sub- and superlinear functionals which are allowed to attain infinite values. It render general versions of well-known extension and separation results. We describe the range of all linear functionals sandwiched between given sub- and superlinear functionals on an ordered cone. The results are of interest even in vector spaces, since we consider sublinear functionals that may attain the value +∞.

In Part I of this paper we shall be concerned with the representation as convolutions of continuous linear operators which act on various function- spaces linked with a locally compact group and which commute with left — or right — translations; cf. the results in [12]. For completeness some known results are included whenever they follow from the general procedure. We have tried to follow simple general approaches as much as possible.

A method is proposed for obtaining a uniformly valid perturbation expansion of the solution of a non-linear partial differential equation, involving either a large or small parameter, when the solution exhibits boundary layer type dependence on the parameter. The method differs from those previously in use in that it is not based on drawing a distinction between points in the boundary layer and points in the remainder of the field. Each point is treated as belonging to both regimes and this enables a stricter control to be maintained on the error terms in the expansions. The method is devised so as to ensure that all forms of error terms are reduced in order at each step in the expansion and not merely those error terms which are mathematically most significant for limiting values of the parameter. The perturbation series can then be used for a wider range of the parameter and provides a solution even when the boundary layer is not particularly thin.

The method is presented through its application to a problem which arises in the theory of the large deflexion of thin elastic plates but the principles underlying the method are more widely applicable.

This paper discusses several properties of topological spaces and how they are refelected by corresponding properties of the associated semi-regularization topologies. For example a space is almost locally connected if and only if its semi-regularization is locally connected. Various separation, connectedness, covering, and mapping properties are considered.

In the general context of ideals in universal algebras, we study varietal properties connected with ideals that are equivalent both to Ma'cev conditions and congruence properties such as 0-regularity, 0-permutability, etc.

We let X be an arbitrary non-empty set throughout. Many papers have been written describing the automorphisms of various transformation semigroups defined on X: total (Lyapin (1955), Magill (1967), Malcev (1952), Schreier (1936)), partial (Gluskin (1959), Magill (1967)), partial and 1–1 (Liber (1953)), partial and shifting at most a finite number of elements (Subov (1961a)). In all these cases the automoprhisms are shown to be “inner”, and using the fact this authors deduce that the automorphism group of the given transformation semigroup is isomorphic to the group gx of all permutations defined on X.

Recently, Chen established a sharp relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature for a submanifold in a Riemannian space form with arbitrary codimension. Afterwards, we dealt with similar problems for submanifolds in complex space forms.

In the present paper, we obtain sharp inequalities between the Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds in Sasakian space forms. Also, estimates of the scalar curvature and the k-Ricci curvature respectively, in terms of the squared mean curvature, are proved.

We study polynomials over an integral domain R which, for infinitely many prime ideals P, induce a permutation of R/P. In many cases, every polynomial with this property must be a composition of Dickson polynomials and of linear polynomials with coefficients in the quotient field of R. In order to find out which of these compositions have the required property we investigate some number theoretic aspects of composition of polynomials. The paper includes a rather elementary proof of ‘Schur's Conjecture’ and contains a quantitative version for polynomials of prime degree.

The first and still the best known computer application to groups exploits coset enumeration and this has been very thoroughly studied; see for instance [2] and [8]. No doubt this is because the algorithm is simple in the sense of programming. The Underlying mathematics is far from simple, touching as it does no logical difficulties akin to the word problem for groups, and this is reflected in the facts that random access to large tables is required and that there is no indication at any stage (for example when storage space is exhausted) whether the algorithm would be completed at any later stage. Efficient computation depends on choosing a subgroup of small index m in the group under examination, for group elements will be represented as permutations of degree m, and the larger m is the more tedious it will be to check properties like orders of group elements. Yet in many cases m may have to be fairly large so that the subgroup is “corefree” i.e. the representation is faithful.

In 1985 John Reade determined the spectrum of C1 regarded as an operator on the space c0 of all null sequences normed by ║x║ = supn≧0|xn|. It is the purpose of this paper to determine the spectrum of C1 regarded as an operator on the space bv0 of all sequences x such that xk → 0 as k → ∞ and .

A graph is s-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on s-arcs but not on (s+1)-arcs in the graph. Let X be a connected tetravalent s-transitive graph of order twice a prime power. In this paper it is shown that s=1,2,3 or 4. Furthermore, if s=2, then X is a normal cover of one of the following graphs: the 4-cube, the complete graph of order 5, the complete bipartite graph K5,5 minus a 1-factor, or K7,7 minus a point-hyperplane incidence graph of the three-dimensional projective geometry PG(2,2); if s=3, then X is a normal cover of the complete bipartite graph of order 4; if s=4, then X is a normal cover of the point-hyperplane incidence graph of the three-dimensional projective geometry PG(2,3). As an application, we classify the tetravalent s-transitive graphs of order 2p2 for prime p.

An additive map $\delta {:}\ R\to Q_{mr}(R)$ is called a (left) $b$-generalized derivation with associated map $d$ if $\delta (xy)=\delta (x)y+bxd(y)$ for all $x, y\in R$. This gives a unified viewpoint of derivations, generalized derivations and generalized $\sigma $-derivations with an X-inner automorphism $\sigma $. We give a complete characterization of $b$-generalized derivations of $R$ having nilpotent values of bounded index. This extends several known results in the literature.

Given an infinite family of finite primitive groups, conditions are found which ensure that almost all the orbitals are not self-paired. If p is a prime number congruent to ±1(mod 10), these conditions apply to the groups P S L (2, p) acting on the cosets of a subgroup isomorphic to A5. In this way, infinitely many vertex-primitive ½-transitive graphs which are not metacirculants are obtained.

We prove some limit theorems for contiunous time and state branching processes. The non-degenerate limit laws are obtained in critical and non-critical cases by conditioning or introducing immigration processes. The limit laws in non-critical cases are characterized in terms of the cononical measure of the cumulant semigroup. The proofs are based on estimates of the cumulant semigroup derived from the forward and backward equations, which are easier than the proffs in the classical setting.
