Let T be a Fourier integral operator on Rn of order–(n–1)/2. Seeger, Sogge, and Stein showed (among other things) that T maps the Hardy space H1 to L1. In this note we show that T is also of weak-type (1, 1). The main ideas are a decomposition of T into non-degenerate and degenerate components, and a factorization of the non-degenerate portion.

This paper is the first part of a long delayed revision of the manuscript ‘The growth conditions recurrence sequences’ (circulated in 1982) in which the authors outlined a proof of the now well known theorem on the finiteness of the number of solutions of S-unit equations. The argument lifting the result from number fields to arbitrary fields of characteristic zero has original features.

The key theme is converse forms of criteria for deciding determinateness in the classical moment problem. A method of proof due to Koosis is streamlined and generalized giving a convexity condition under which moments satisfying implies that c a positive constant. A contrapositive version is proved under a rapid variation condition on f (x), generalizing a result of Lin. These results are used to obtain converses of the Stieltjes versions of the Carleman and Krein criteria. Hamburger versions are obtained which relax the symmetry assumption of Koosis and Lin, respectively. A sufficient condition for Stieltjes determinateness of a discrete law is given in terms of its mass function. These criteria are illustrated through several examples.

A group G has all of its subgroups normal-by-finite if H / coreG(H) is finite for all subgroups H of G. These groups can be quite complicated in general, as is seen from the so-called Tarski groups. However, the locally finite groups of this type are shown to be abelian-by-finite; and they are then boundedly core-finite, that is to say, there is a bound depending on G only for the indices | H: coreG(H)|.

Composition operators Cτ between Orlicz spaces Lϕ (Ω, Σ, μ) generated by measurable and nonsingular transformations τ from Ω into itself are considered. We characterize boundedness and compactness of the composition operator between Orlicz spaces in terms of properties of the mapping τ, the function ϕ and the measure space (Ω, Σ, μ). These results generalize earlier results known for Lp-spaces.

Given an R-module M, the centralizer near-ring ℳR (M) is the set of all functions f: M → M with f(xr)= f(x)r for all x ∈ M and r∈R endowed with point-wise addition and composition of functions as multiplication. In general, ℳR(M) is not a ring but is a near-ring containing the endomorphism ring ER(M) of M. Necessary and/or sufficient conditions are derived for ℳR(M) to be a ring. For the case that R is a Dedekind domain, the R-modules M are characterized for which (i) ℳR(M) is a ring; and (ii)ℳR(M) = ER(M). It is shown that over Dedekind domains with finite prime spectrum properties (i) and (ii) are equivalent.

Pseudo-effect algebras are partial algebras (E; +, 0, 1) with a partially defined addition + which is not necessary commutative and with two complements, left and right ones. We define central elements of a pseudo-effect algebra and the centre, which in the case of MV-algebras coincides with the set of Boolean elements and in the case of effect algebras with the Riesz decomposition property central elements are only characteristic elements. If E satisfies general comparability, then E is a pseudo MV-algebra. Finally, we apply central elements to obtain a variation of the Cantor-Bernstein theorem for pseudo-effect algebras.

As an illustration of the use of his identity [10], Spitzer [11] obtained the Pollaczek-Khintchine formula for the waiting time distribution of the queue M/G/1. The present paper develops this approach, using a generalised form of Spitzer's identity applied to a three-demensional random walk. This yields a number of results for the general queue GI/G/1, including Smith' solution for the stationary waiting time, which is established under less restrictive conditions that hitherto (§ 5). A soultion is obtained for the busy period distribution in GI/G/1 (§ 7) which can be evaluated when either of the distributions concerned has a rational characteristic function. This solution contains some recent results of Conolly on the quene GI/En/1, as well as well-known results for M/G/1.

Let $d{:}\ R\to Q_{mr}(R)$ be an additive map and $b\in Q_{mr}(R)$. An additive map $\delta {:}\ R\to Q_{mr}(R)$ is called a (left) $b$-generalized derivation with associated map $d$ if $\delta (xy)=\delta (x)y+bxd(y)$ for all $x, y\in R$. This gives a unified viewpoint of derivations, generalized derivations and generalized $\sigma $-derivations with an X-inner automorphism $\sigma $. We give a complete characterization of $b$-generalized derivations of $R$ having nilpotent values of bounded index. This extends several known results in the literature.

As dual to the notion of “finitely injective modules” introduced and studied by Ramamurth and Rangaswamy (1973), we define a right R-module M to be finitely projective if it is projective. with respect to short exact sequences of right R-modules of the form 0 → A → B → C → 0 with C finitely generated. We have completely characterized finitely projective modules over a Dedekind domain. If R is a Dedekind domain, then an R-module M is finitely projective if and only if its reduced part is torsionless and coseparable.

For a Dedekind domain R, finite projectivity, unlike projectivity is not hereditary. But it is proved to be pure hereditary, that is, every pure submodule of a finitely projective R-module is finitely projective.

If H is a subgroup of a group G we shall say that G is H-residually finite if for every element g in G, outside H, there is a subgroup of finite index in G, containing H and still avoiding g. (Then, according to the usual definition, G is residually finite if it is E-residually finite, where E is the identity subgroup). Definitions of other terms used below may be found in § 2 or in [6].

The main results are as follows. A finitely generated soluble group G is polycyclic if and only if every infinite set of elements of G contains a pair generating a polycyclic subgroup; and the same result with “polycyclic” replaced by “coherent”.

We first give the existence and uniqueness result and a comparison theorem for backward stochastic differential equations with Brownian motion and Poisson process as the noise source in stopping time (unbounded) duration. Then we obtain the existence and uniqueness result for fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equation with Brownian motion and Poisson process in stopping time (unbounded) duration. We also proved a comparison theorem for this kind of equation.

The development of a population over time can often be simulated by the behavior of a birth and death process, whose transition probability matrix P(t) = (Pij(t), where X(t) denotes the number of individuals at time t, satisfies the differential equations and the initial condition

We study a canonical spanning surface obtained from a knot or link diagram, depending on a given Kauffman state. We give a sufficient condition for the surface to be essential. By using the essential surface, we can deduce the triviality and splittability of a knot or link from its diagrams. This has been done on the extended knot or link class that includes all semiadequate, homogeneous knots and links, and most algebraic knots and links. In order to prove the main theorem, we extend Gabai’s Murasugi sum theorem to the case of nonorientable spanning surfaces.

An undirected simple graph G is called chordal if every circle of G of length greater than 3 has a chord. For a chordal graph G, we prove the following: (i) If m is an odd positive integer, Gm is chordal. (ii) If m is an even positive integer and if Gm is not chordal, then none of the edges of any chordless cycle of Gm is an edge of Gr, r < m.

The main aim of this paper is to obtain optimality conditions for a constrained set-valued optimization problem. The concept of Clarke epiderivative is introduced and is used to derive necessary optimality conditions. In order to establish sufficient optimality criteria we introduce a new class of set-valued maps which extends the class of convex set-valued maps and is different from the class of invex set-valued maps.

The classification of spaces of matrices of bounded rank is known to depend upon ‘primitive’ spaces, whose structure is considerably restricted. A characterisation of an infinite class of primitive spaces is given. The result is then applied to obtain a complete description of spaces whose matrices have rank at most 3.

Suppose H is a complex Hilbert space and K is a nonempty closed convex subset of H. Suppose T: K → H is a monotomc Lipschitzian mapping with constant L ≧ 1 such that, for x in K and h in H, the equation x + Tx Tx = h has a solution q in K. Given x0 in K, let {Cn}∞n=0 be a real sequence satisfying: (i) C0 = 1, (ii) 0 ≦ Cn < L-2 for all n ≧ 1, (iii) ΣnCn(1 − Cn) diverges. Then the sequence {Pn}∞n=0 in H defined by pn = (1 − Cn)xn + CnSxn, n ≧ 0, where {xn}∞n=0 in K is such that, for each n ≧ 1, ∥ xn – Pn−1 ∥ = infx ∈ k ∥ Pn−1 − x ∥, converges strongly to a solution q of x + Tx = h. Explicit error estimates are given. A similar result is also proved for the case when the operator T is locally Lipschitzian and monotone.

Let K be a field of characteristic p. The permutation modules associated to partitions of n, usually denoted as Mλ, play a central role not only for symmetric groups but also for general linear groups, via Schur algebras. The indecomposable direct summands of these Mλ were parametrized by James; they are now known as Young modules; and Klyachko and Grabmeier developed a ‘Green correspondence’ for Young modules. The original parametrization used Schur algebras; and James remarked that he did not know a proof using only the representation theory of symmetric groups. We will give such proof, and we will at the same time also prove the correspondence result, by using only the Brauer construction, which is valid for arbitrary finite groups.
