L’expression n’est-ce pas? peut être analysée, dans la majorité de ses emplois, comme un ‘mot du discours’ qui fonctionne en tant que ‘marqueur d’appel à l’écoute’. Cette contribution vise à déterminer les raisons qui ont pu conduire à la diminution quantitative relativement rapide de ce marqueur, encore abondamment utilisé dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. Une étude sur corpus, prenant en compte les divers contextes d’emploi de n’est-ce pas, permet de situer dans la décennie 1955–1965 le début du déclin de la locution, que nous expliquons au moyen de ses valeurs pragmatiques et de ses caractéristiques morphosyntaxiques.

This article assesses the sociolinguistic impact and importance of the other articles in this special issue on Paris, considering three main themes that are evoked. First, the contribution of the articles here to the development of work on language variation and change on Hexagonal French within the variationist paradigm. Second, I address what I see as the important contribution made to our understanding of the ‘city’ as a sociolinguistic site. Finally, I focus on ethnicity as a social construct in recent variationist work in cities and consider what the articles here, and in comparison with cities elsewhere, add to our understanding of the impact of immigration on local manifestations of language variability. In each case, I attempt to show how these articles foreground or even problematize these three issues, and provide a prospectus for further research that can address unresolved questions.

Plusieurs travaux ont été consacrés à ce jour à puis (Chevalier et Molho, 1986; Hansen, 1998; Reyle, 1998; Bras, Le Draoulec et Vieu, 2001). En revanche, à l'exception de quelques études ciblées (Laurendeau, 1982 et 1983; Laks, 1983), pis a généralement été tenu pour une variante dans la prononciation de puis et a rarement été examiné pour lui-même. L'objectif du présent article, consacré à pis dans son usage en français québécois, est double. Il s'agit:

– de dégager les spécificités sémantiques du marqueur lorsqu'il est connecteur (propositionnel et textuel). Cela conduit à le situer par rapport à et et à proposer une hypothèse, basée sur l'opposition ‘connecteur associatif/connecteur dissociatif’, susceptible d'expliquer pourquoi les marqueurs en cause se trouvent en distribution complémentaire dans l'oral familier, bien qu'ils expriment tous deux un type de connexion neutre;

– d'identifier les sens de pis lorsqu'il est marqueur discursif et de mettre en évidence les liens qui les unissent entre eux, de même que les liens qui les rattachent à l'emploi où le marqueur agit à titre de connecteur.

This study explores variation in the use of English-origin verbs in Quebec French. These lexical borrowings are usually integrated grammatically into the receiving language (Poplack, 2018), as in il va crasher and elle m’a ghosté in Quebec French. However, a new lexical insertion strategy for English-origin verbs has been observed in the past few years: verbal borrowings can lack overt morphological integration, as in il va crash and elle m’a ghost. This article examines the use of English-origin verbs in Quebec French from a variationist perspective by focusing on 1) possible correlations between speakers and how they evaluate the different lexical insertion strategies, and 2) the social factors that constrain the use of morphologically unintegrated English-origin verbs. Results from quantitative analyses based on 675 participants indicate that young Quebecers from Montreal with a high level of proficiency in English are the ones who use this morphologically unintegrated form the most and evaluate it more positively. This unintegrated form poses a theoretical problem according to Poplack’s (2018) theory, for which nonce borrowings are morphologically and syntactically integrated into the receiving language.

In Basque, there is evidence, especially in early loans from Latin, that a sequence #DV(R)T… where D is a voiced stop and T is a voiceless (aspirated) stop was optionally produced with devoicing of the first of these stops. An additional particularity of this sound pattern is that the devoiced word-initial stop typically surfaces with aspiration, while the previously aspirated stop loses it: #DV(R)T(h)… > #T(h)V(R)T… This typologically uncommon sound pattern has been described as assimilation of voicelessness in the literature, or spread of [-voiced]. I propose that this sound pattern is triggered by aspiration, not voicelessness, and that it is a case of metathesis, not assimilation. Under the proposed analysis, aspiration of the second stop in the word is reanalysed as originating in the first stop, an instance of perceptual metathesis. This approach accounts for the distribution of aspirated stops before and after the optional change, and the failure of post-sibilant stops to trigger. This account also has implications for the chronology of aspiration-loss in Western dialects: at the time the earliest Latin loans were borrowed, all Basque dialects still maintained a historical series of aspirated stops. Only later, after this process of optional metathesis, did the Western dialects lose *h and stop aspiration.

Although not studied by the generative approach (Shlonsky 2017), the embedded Wh- in situ clause nevertheless belongs to the French language spoken in a large amount of areas, and, we believe, to “français tout court” (Blanche-Benveniste & Jeanjean 1987): until now, it has mainly been studied in Quebec (Lefebvre & Maisonneuve 1982; Blondeau & Ledegen 2021) and in Reunion Island (Ledegen 2007a, 2007b, 2007c, 2016; Ledegen & Martin 2020), but it has recently been massively attested in the Multicultural Paris French project in the suburbs of Paris (Gardner-Chloros & Secova 2018) and Strasbourg (Marchessou 2018). These new data could be read as a language contact, as a recent linguistic change, or as a long-established “popular” structure (Guiraud 1966), different analytical hypotheses that will be detailed in this study. These recent data also argue in favour of the methodology of ecological corpora, obtained within the framework of a strong acquaintanceship and located at the pole of communicative proximity (Koch & Oesterreicher 2001). The examination of various existing corpora will reveal the structural functioning of the structure and contrast the corpora following the modes of interaction, the oral or written medium, as well as on the chronological axis.

Cet article s'inscrit dans l'hypothèse de l'encadrement développée par Charolles (1997), et réexaminée ultérieurement sous divers angles. Une condition syntaxique est mise au jour par Fuchs et Fournier (2003), à laquelle nous portons une attention particulière : à savoir, l'antéposition nécessaire du sujet (S) par rapport au verbe (V), suivant un terme initial cadratif. Nous réinterrogeons le lien entre encadrement et position du sujet à la lumière d'un corpus de contes oraux. Nous défendons l'hypothèse que dans certains cas, lorsqu'ils apparaissent dans des sections stratégiques du conte, les syntagmes spatio-temporels suivis de l'ordre VS peuvent être regardés comme proprement cadratifs.

It has recently been argued by Gess (2001) that the long vowels resulting from the compensatory lengthening that emerged in the wake of preconsonantal /s/-deletion in Old French had all been shortened by the sixteenth century. Given that many of these long vowels are still present in Canadian French, this conclusion cannot possibly be correct. What will be shown here is precisely how Gess' methodology led him to obtain such counterfactual results.

Using evidence from a variety of sources (dialectological and sociolinguistic studies, written and oral history and works of literature), this study seeks to describe how, in a period of rapid industrial expansion to which immigrant labour was a crucial contributing factor, large numbers of Belgian migrant workers (the majority of whom were Flemish-speaking) were assimilated into the local Romance-speaking community. In an area often characterised as diglossic (French-Picard), the influx of large numbers of Flemish speakers gave rise to a three-way language-contact situation. While charting some of the most important changes in the vernaculars of Lille, the study seeks to explain why an alloctonous group of such significant proportions living so close to their homeland apparently assimilated so readily.

L’objectif de cet article consiste à éclairer la distribution des deux locutions si tu veux/si vous voulez, au plan syntaxique et discursif, de manière à éclairer et à classer les fonctions que leur attribuent généralement les dictionnaires. Pour ce faire nous nous appuyons sur un corpus de 400 occurrences, sélectionnées sur leur apparition en incise, issues de bases de données du français oral (Corpus de Référence du Français Parlé et Corpus du Français Parlé Parisien) et écrit (Frantext). Après avoir montré que si tu veux/si vous voulez résultent bien d’un processus de pragmaticalisation, nous étudions la syntaxe de ces marqueurs et dégageons trois emplois motivés sur des critères syntaxico-discursifs: 1) la concession du dire ou du dit, 2) la recherche lexicale suivant diverses modalités et 3) leur fonction interactionnelle.

L'article propose d'étudier diachroniquement le conditionnel passé (noté CONDPA) qui a pour particularité de pouvoir signifier contextuellement la contrefactualité (ex. Si j'avais su, je neseraispasvenu.). Le but de cette étude est de retracer, à travers une analyse de corpus, l'émergence de cette interprétation contrefactuelle, qui s'est généralisée en français à partir du 17ème siècle. Ce changement coïncide avec l'acquisition d'une valeur de passé aoriste, correspondant au dernier stade du chemin d'évolution des formes parfaites décrit par Bybee et al. (1994). L'émergence de la contrefactualité est analysée comme le résultat de la conventionnalisation d'inférences (cf. Heine 2002).

This paper examines the phenomenon of language obsolescence by focusing on a large sample of Breton-speakers and non-Breton-speakers within the commune of Plougastel-Daoulas, Finistere. As well as considering matters such as the ability to understand Breton, the opportunities to speak it and so forth, the study also investigates linguistic preference, inter-generational transmission and attitudes towards language planning in an attempt to determine the extent to which the speakers themselves may be considered as catalysts in the process of language death.

This paper examines /ɛ/ lowering before /r/ in Louisiana Regional French (e.g., père, /pɛr/ → [pær], [pɛr] ‘father’) between 1977 and 2011 in a small geographic region. The analysis of 436 tokens from 32 speakers shows that /ɛ/ lowering has changed through time from a generational to a geographical boundary marker. This explains differing /ɛ/ lowering rates reported in the literature (Guilbeau, 1950; Dubois, 2005; Salmon, 2009). Results confirm that sociolinguistic factors play an active role in Louisiana Regional French, despite its endangered status (Dajko, 2009; Dubois, 2005), underscoring the need to better control for diatopic factors in future research.

This article investigates the evolution of bare nouns, used without a determiner, through the history of the French language. The loss of bare nouns is charted through calibrated corpora of non-fictional prose texts from the same genres and region, ranging from the 12th to the 19th century. The change is first completed with nouns in subject function, significantly advances with direct objects, and progresses with obliques. The extensive quantitative documentation demonstrates that the change is impacted by the syntactic function of the noun, along the Accessibility Hierarchy. The speculation is examined that the more accessible functions encourage expression of (definite) determiners, thus explaining the pattern of change.

Dans cette étude diachronique, il est démontré que les trois types d'emplois de la locution en fait de qui coexistent dans la langue actuelle, représentent différentes étapes dans l'évolution de la locution, déjà attestée en moyen français avec des emplois du premier type. Une étude de corpus permet de situer l'apparition des deux autres types respectivement au milieu du XIXe siècle et dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle Il apparaît en outre que la diversification des valeurs sémantiques de en fait de va de pair avec deux tendances opposées dans sa distribution: d'une part, une extension de son usage à d'autres catégories grammaticales que celle du nom et, d'autre part, une restriction progressive quant aux positions et fonctions syntaxiques qu'il peut occuper. Ces données confirment l'idée que l'innovation linguistique peut favoriser le passage d'une fonction syntaxique (complément plus ou moins lié au verbe) à une fonction discursive (constituant périphérique marqueur de thématisation, de cadrage etc.)

Bien marqueur du discours oriente systématiquement l'énoncé vers le positif, mais contrairement à l'adverbe de manière ou au substantif, le marqueur bien est implicitement porteur de négativité. Il introduit dans l'énoncé un parcours entre ces pôles opposés, que nous analysons ici en combinant la théorie polyphonique et celle des topoï: les énonciateurs sont les représentants des points de vue qui s'affrontent en deuxième ou troisième ligne et sont responsables des différents revirements dans l'argumentation. L'analyse du mécanisme argumentatif fondamental déclenché par bien marqueur est basée sur un corpus de plusieurs centaines d'occurrences, ce qui nous a permis de dégager un certain nombre de valeurs contextuelles de bien suivant qu'il apparaît seul ou en combinaison avec d'autres connecteurs tels mais ou donc.

It is standardly assumed that French does not have word-stress, rather it has phrase-level prominence. I will advance a number of arguments, many of which have appeared already in the literature, that cumulatively suggest that French roots are characterized by phonological prominence, even if this is non-contrastive. By prominence, I mean a syntagmatically distributed strength that has all the phonological characteristics of stress in other Romance languages. I will remain agnostic about the nature of that stress, eschewing the lively debate about whether French has feet, and if so what type, and at what level. The structure of the argument is as follows. French demonstrably has phonological word-final strength but one wonders what the source of this strength is. Positionally, the initial position is strong and, independently of cases where it is reinforced by other factors, the final position is weak. I will argue, based on parallels with other Romance languages, that French word-final strength derives from root-final phonological stress. The broader significance of this conclusion is that syntagmatic properties are enough to motivate underlying forms, even in the absence of paradigmatic contrasts (minimal pairs).

Cette étude porte sur le rôle du geste enfantin dans le développement du lexique précoce chez des enfants jumeaux (garçon et fille) en interaction avec leur mère entre 15 et 26 mois en situation de livres d'images. Il ressort de ce travail que ces deux enfants produisent des combinaisons geste/mot(s), contenant le plus souvent un mot référentiel. Nous remarquons aussi que toutes ces combinaisons contiennent des informations identiques. Celles-ci semblent faciliter l'accroissement des combinaisons « pointage+énoncés à 2 mots » constaté chez nos deux sujets entre 24 et 26 mois. Ce résultat nouveau lié à la situation de livres d'images rompt avec les travaux cités dans la littérature.

Feature Inheritance (Richards 2007) entails that uninterpretable features originate on the phase head C or v* and are then transferred to the associated Agree head, T or V. In the present article, it is argued that the French que–qui alternation is the locus of a Case contrast, implying that nominative Case originates on the complementiser and only becomes associated with T as a consequence of feature transfer. Que–qui thus provides new, Case-based empirical support for the theory of Feature Inheritance. The article also suggests that the que–qui alternation has an important implication for Chomsky's recent application of dynamic antisymmetry, reinterpreted in terms of labelling, to the issue of subject extraction failure. Specifically, the alternation appears to indicate that Case-matching is required, in addition to phi-feature agreement, in order for extraction to be blocked by labelling.

Le présent article vise à décrire les particularités textuelles et discursives de l'expression anaphorique Ledit N. La première partie de l'étude est consacrée au mode de donation référentielle de Ledit N. La spécificité de cette expression réside dans le fait que l'identification de la source d'interprétation se fait par le biais du texte et non par le biais de la mémoire discursive, à la différence des autres expressions anaphoriques. La deuxième partie porte sur l'emploi de Ledit N dans trois types de textes différents: textes l'gislatifs, journalistiques et littéraires. La comparaison de ces trois sous-corpus a pour objectif de mettre en évidence les différents effets discursifs que peut induire Ledit N.
