mais ici, de quoi prend une fonction inhabituelle, celle de circonstant, alors que dans un exemple tel que (iii), de qui remplit la fonction de complément essentiel indirect par rapport à l'infinitif. Dans un dernier temps, nous avons étudié les emplois en discours de cette structure, selon que la proforme quoi anaphorise ou non une structure prédicative de l'énoncé précédent et selon les infinitifs utilisés.

Dans l’objectif de contraster deux sous-genres du roman contemporain, l’article analyse les réalisations lexicales, syntaxiques, sémantiques et discursives de 8 constructions lexico-syntaxiques (CLS) dans un corpus français constitué de romans historiques (HIST) et de romans de littérature blanche (GEN) postérieurs à 1950. Ces unités phraséologiques récurrentes ont été repérées grâce à la technique des ALR développée dans le Lexicoscope, un outil de linguistique de corpus créé pour fouiller des textes. Les 8 CLS retenues pour cette étude interviennent dans (ou initient) une interaction verbale. Notre propos est de démontrer que ces CLS représentent bien des motifs qui occupent des fonctions discursives (FD) précises dans chaque genre sous-romanesque qu’elles permettent de mieux définir. Nous verrons ainsi que ces motifs de l’interaction verbale peuvent occuper des FD narrative, descriptive et pragmatique dans HIST et GEN mais que seule la FD cognitive est représentée dans GEN.

We examine the phrasal vs. clausal syntactic status of French infinitives. Whereas a number of current theories assume a VP-hypothesis (contra principles and parameters theories, including the Minimalist Program), data relative to causative constructions in French are often treated as clausal constructions (the so-called ‘proposition infinitive’). The aim of this paper is to demonstrate (i) that it is possible to account for causative constructions in French according to the VP-hypothesis (e.g. in the HPSG framework); (ii) that it is in fact impossible to maintain a clausal hypothesis for causative constructions with respect to subject inversion in French. We therefore argue in favour of the VP-hypothesis for all (French) infinitives.

In this article, we present the results of an analysis of variation, whose main objectives are to ascertain the ethnocultural identities speakers declare and to measure the impact of internal, external and identity factors on the use of the connectors of consequence (ça) fait que vs donc vs alors vs so. Our research emphasizes that while there is no consensus as to the terminology chosen to express these identities, it is important to consider ethnocultural identities as a complementary factor conditioning linguistic variation. It also demonstrates that for communities whose linguistic practices and norms straddle those of minority- and majority-French language communities, the minority/majority dichotomy needs to be nuanced, according to the social and ethnocultural identity dynamics that may characterize specific communities.

This paper reports on language practices in the city of Strasbourg, in a multi-ethnic working class neighbourhood. This provides a comparative setting to identify whether linguistic features are spreading between French cities. Data were collected from young speakers (16 to 21) using an ethnographic approach over a year. First, this paper will briefly review the literature on language variation research in France. Second, a comparison of vernacular features will be carried out, focusing on lexical innovations, indirect questions following the verb savoir (Gardner-Chloros and Secova, this issue), quotative systems (Cheshire and Secova, this issue) and discourse markers. Finally, the ethnographic data collected as part of this research will be used to consider how multi-ethnic working class neighbourhoods in France are connected with each other, and how language may be travelling between settings.

Changing patterns of assonance in early Old French texts have traditionally provided the basis for the claim that vowel height has a universally predictable effect on the development of distinctive nasalization over time. However, the results of recent studies cannot be accounted for by such a hypothesis. Furthermore, an alternative hypothesis suggests that the same patterns of assonance reflect modifications in vowel quality rather than nasality. Additional cross-linguistic and phonetic data examined here further undermine the purportedly universal character of the development of distinctive nasalization in Old French.

Le présent article défend la thèse selon laquelle (i) le participe passé est une forme purement aspectuelle représentant le temps interne du procès sur la borne terminale de sa phase processuelle ; (ii) cette représentation détensive du temps interne, qu’il ne partage avec aucune autre forme verbale, permet de rendre compte des trois principales constructions dans lesquelles entre le participe passé : l’emploi nu, la construction du passif périphrastique, la construction analytique. C’est à l’analyse du rôle du participe passé dans la construction analytique, du fait de son aspect détensif, qu’est consacré le présent article.

Cet article s'intéresse aux modes d'expression de la méronymie dans les petites annonces immobilières en français/anglais/espagnol. Il met en évidence une utilisation très proche de avec, with et con dans ce genre textuel, pour exprimer cette relation, et propose des pistes pour expliquer cette similarité: étymologie (la préposition introduit dans les trois langues une notion de proximité), contamination linguistique (influence entre langues), similarité de situation: nécessité de mettre en saillance un objet pour le valoriser, fonctionnement cognitif: possibilité de mettre en valeur un objet en insistant sur ses parties originales. L'étude comparative est réalisée à partir d'un corpus comportant 100 petites annonces pour chaque langue.

There is currently no generally accepted theory of metre in French such as the one available for English. Students of French verse-texts look to linguists in vain for a clear decision-procedure for the metrical description of French verse. This essay attempts to derive such a decision-procedure from a historical testing of the hypothesis that the word in French has a prosodic identity and that metre in French can be seen as a structure which orders that identity.

La majoritǵ des études sur l'aspect pèchent par une insuffisante distinction de l'aspect sémantique (lié au sens du verbe, l' ‘Aktionsart’ des linguistes allemands), de l'aspect lexical (que manifestent divers coverbes et compléments adverbiaux) et de l'aspect affixal (inhérent à un préfixe, un infixe ou un suffixe de conjugaison) – certains chercheurs allant jusqu'à demander au second et\ou au troisiéme le soin de déterminer le premier.

Notre synthèse propose d'abord une définition générale de l'aspect: ‘temps intérieur au verbr’. passant au français, elle décrit les phénomènes quiaffectent n'importe quel procès AB en son pôle A, en son pôle B ou en l'intervalle A←B. Pour terminer, on s'intéresse au fonctionnement combiné des aspects et au délicat problème leur hiérarchie.

This paper presents a hypothesis for the genesis of Creole French by drawing conclusions from an illustrative comparison of Louisiana Creole and Haitian Creole, and by presenting a depiction of the social-historical context in which Louisiana Creole developed.

Bickerton's bioprogram and Baker and Corne's model comparing Mauritian Creole and its Reunionese congener are considered and found to be inadequate descriptions of the genesis of Creole French, since they assume that all parts of colonial Saint-Domingue, the île Bourbon (Reunion) and the île de France (Mauritius) had the same demographic mix and social structure. This paper offers and alternative model which suggests that French planation colonies did not constitute monolithic socio–politico–economic entities. On the contrary, differences in social setting were reflected by variartions in the local form of Creole French. Furthermore, certain structural features were diffused from one territory to another via the focal centres that also diffused the colonial model of social, political and economic organization. These are considered together to account for the range of variation found today in Louisiana Creole, and to explain the striking similarities between Louisiana Cre le and its geographically most proximate Creole French congener, Haitian Creole.

Dans les études sur les adverbes du français, d'abord a la particularité d'être considéré à la fois comme un adverbe conjonctif et comme un adverbe organisateur du discours. Dans la présente analyse, nous nous focalisons sur les relations de d'abord avec son contexte gauche, dans le cadre théorique de la Segmented Discourse Representation Theory. Nous montrons que le constituant contenant d'abord est attaché, par une relation de discours subordonnante, à un constituant considéré comme topique de discours. Les relations subordonnantes peuvent être des relations d’Elaboration, d’Explication, de Résultat ou de Précondition. A l'inverse, nous montrons que d'abord interdit les relations coordonnantes pour le rattachement à son contexte gauche.

Cet article vise à examiner la mise en scène de l'accent marseillais dans le film le plus emblématique de Marseille, Marius (1931) et son remake de 2013 par une une analyse du comportement du schwa. La réalisation fréquente des e graphiques fait en effet partie des particularités phonético-phonologiques de l'accent prototypique de Marseille. Pourtant, aujourd'hui, le nombre de réalisations des schwas semble diminuer continuellement. Notre étude a pour but de découvrir à quel degré l'accent mis en scène diffère de l'accent des locuteurs marseillais actuels et si les deux films, qui ont été tournés avec 80 ans d’écart, soulignent le changement linguistique en cours dans le Midi. Les deux films ont été transcrits et codés selon le protocole du programme phonologie du Français contemporain (PFC). Par la suite, les données ont été comparées à celles des enquêtes PFC. Les résultats montrent que l'accent mis en scène se distingue nettement de l'accent authentique d'aujourd'hui. Le schwa ne se comporte cependant pas différemment dans les deux films.

In France, English is often perceived as a negative influence on the language in the eyes of purist institutions like the French Academy. Terminological commissions have been established to replace foreign expressions with French terminology that is regularly published in the Journal officiel de la République française. Although the Toubon Law of 1994 prescribes the use of this terminology in government publications, speakers are merely encouraged to do so. This article investigates the variation between English lexical borrowings and their prescribed equivalents in a large newspaper corpus containing articles from 2000 to 2017 in order to see whether formal written language complies with the purist recommendations. Time is treated with a new dynamic approach: the probability of using a prescribed term is estimated three years before and three years after official prescription. Fifty-four target terms are selected from the lexical fields of computer science, entertainment industry and telecommunication, including emblematic prescribed words such as courriel and mot-dièse. The analysis reveals that prescription is only effective when it follows already attested use. Furthermore, conservative newspapers show higher proportions of recommended terminology, especially as compared to newspapers specializing in technology.

La prosodie, qui fait l'objet d'une acquisition précoce chez le jeune enfant, pourrait contenir des indices (pauses, intonation, accentuation) susceptibles de faciliter la mise en place des premières combinaisons de deux mots et des premières relations syntaxiques. Nous proposons d'examiner les caractéristiques prosodiques des productions de Madeleine, entre 11 et 23 mois. L'analyse acoustique de 550 productions fait apparaître que les premiers mots apparaissent vers 12 mois de façon concomitante à la réalisation accrue de proto-mots bisyllabiques, produits avec des contours montants et montants-descendants, dont la forme temporelle se rapproche de la forme adulte. Les combinaisons de mots émergent ensuite, à partir de 18 mois, caractérisées par un contour d'intonation unique et modulé qui permet d'exprimer leurs liens de dépendance.

Using data from the ESRC funded project Pragmatics and Intercultural Communication (PIC), this paper applies contrastive quantitative and qualitative analysis to data derived from oral statements, logbooks and retrospective reports by language teaching assistants in France and England. The data concerns their ‘rapport’ (Spencer-Oatey, 2003; 2005) with the members of staff responsible for their professional supervision and the paper assesses complaint behaviour across the two national groups. Basing our study on computer recorded discourse segments taxonomically codified as ‘negative assessment’, we show that the incidence of ‘indirect’ complaint (Boxer, 1993) is significantly higher among English assistants than among their French counterparts. A revised model for measuring ‘severity’ (House and Kasper, 1981; Olshtain and Weinbach, 1993) is applied to the data using corpus linguistic techniques. Its findings demonstrate that English assistants also complain more ‘severely’ than their French peers. Nevertheless, the difference in linguistic behaviour between individuals within each group is shown to be greater than that between the two national groups, implying that personality is a stronger determinant of cultural outlook than nationality.

Despite the ample database of research findings on the benefits of Processing Instruction (PI), research thus has primarily made use of offline measures to establish how L2 learners comprehend and process sentences. Using online methodology, such as eye-tracking, allows research to more directly measure implicit knowledge. The sensitivity of these measures requires meticulous design choices to ensure validity and replicability. This study provides an overview of the linguistic and physical design considerations necessary for creating eye-tracking materials in SLA research. The present study demonstrates the application of these design considerations in an eye-tracking study, comparing the changes in processing patterns between two types of instruction: PI and Traditional Instruction (TI) on low intermediate L2 adult learners’ acquisition of the French imperfect aspect. The results of the experimental study show beneficial gains made by L2 learners who received PI on the French imperfect tense, this was seen in both a significant increase in accuracy scores from pre-test to post-test and change in their cognitive processing as shown by eye-movement data. The present study emphasizes the need for future studies to consider methodological reflections and key design principles in eye-tracking research.

The field of language-death studies has invited a growing number of researchers to explore what happens to the internal structure of a language as it declines. However, little work has been done to date on minority varieties of French in the context of language-death studies. This paper examines some intergenerational changes in subordination (conditionals and subjunctive clauses) in a Cajun French community, exploring the gradual loss of non-indicative moods and the abandonment of finite clauses in subjunctive contexts in favour of innovative non-finite clause types via a continuum of variation.

Un sujet crucial concernant l'opposition massif/comptable est l'apparente flexibilité morphosyntaxique régulière de certaines classes sémantiques, comme celle des noms d'animaux (Kleiber, 1999; Nicolas, 2002 et références incluses), ou celle des noms de fruits et de légumes. C'est cette dernière que nous examinons ici, par le biais d'une vaste étude de corpus comprenant l'analyse quantitative (profils distributionnels) et qualitative (effets de sens) des acceptions massives et comptables de 18 items lexicaux. Nos observations nous amènent à postuler un modèle original de la localisation de l'opposition massif/comptable, rendant compte des phénomènes de flexibilité régulière sans recourir à la notion de polysémie, et basé sur un Principe de Double Héritage. Ainsi, nos données suggèrent que les noms de fruits et de légumes présentent de manière intrinsèque les deux acceptions, et hériteraient leur caractère comptable au niveau lexical (propriétés ontologiques) et leur caractère massif à un niveau supra-lexical, de par leur appartenance à une certaine classe sémantico-pragmatique (objets de consommation culinaire).

We report on a survey of language attitudes carried out as part of a project comparing youth language in Paris and London.1 As in similar studies carried out in London (Cheshire et al., 2008), Berlin (Wiese, 2009) and elsewhere (Boyd et al., 2015), the focus was on features considered typical of ‘contemporary urban vernaculars’ (Rampton, 2015).

The respondents were pupils aged 15–18 in two secondary schools in a working-class northern suburb of Paris. The survey included (1) a written questionnaire containing examples of features potentially undergoing change in contemporary French; (2) an analysis of reactions to extracts from the project data: participants were asked to comment on the speakers and the features identified.

Quantitative analysis had shown that some of these features are more widespread than others and are used by certain categories of speaker more than others (Gardner-Chloros and Secova, this volume). This study provides a qualitative dimension, showing that different features have different degrees of perceptual salience and acceptability. It demonstrates that youth varieties do not involve characteristic features being used as a ‘package’, and that such changes interact in a complex manner with attitudinal factors. The study also provides material for reflection on the role of attitude studies within sociolinguistic surveys.
