The weathering of eastern Australian basalts, sampled from the rounded, hard, core-stone to the rind of softer weathered material, has been examined by bulk chemical analyses, thin section petrography, electron microprobe, and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. Using density as a measure of weathering intensity, data from four core-stones show that at a stage of weathering in which the total loss due to dissolution is – (i.e., at the core-stone rim), the percentages lost of the following major elements are: Ca, 85; Mg, 80; Na, 70; K, 50–80; P, 55; Si, 45; Mn, 40; Al, 5; Fe, 0; and Ti, 0. With more intense weathering, deposition of some elements, particularly rare earths and Ba, and mobilization and deposition of Al and Fe make quantification impossible. The rate of weathering of individual minerals is consistent with the well-known susceptibility series: glass ∼ olivine > plagioclase > pyroxene > opaque minerals. Clay minerals in the core-stones are dominated by smectites, whereas those in the surrounding more intensely weathered rinds are dominated by halloysite and goethite.

A suite of Georgia kaolinites, ranging from well-ordered to very poorly ordered samples, were studied to explore correlations between degree of structural disorder, geological environment, Fe3+ content, Fe3+ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum, and infrared (IR) hydroxyl-stretching band frequencies and bandwidths. Samples from different localities showed a wide range of disorder which appears to be related to differences in their geological environments. High iron content correlated strongly with low degree of order. The areas of both the I and E components of the EPR spectrum and the fractional I area correlated inversely with degree of order. Fourier-transform IR studies of kaolinites and dickites showed that (1) interlayer hydrogen bonding is weaker in dickite than in kaolinite; (2) frequency of the ν11 stretching band of the inner-surface hydroxyls increases sequentially from well-ordered kaolinite through the disordered structures to well-ordered dickite, which is consistent with a model for disorder based on vacancy displacement; and (3) the character and temperature dependence of the inner hydroxyl-stretching band is not compatible with the crystal structures of kaolinite and dickite as refined by Suitch and Young.

The thickness of the two-layer ethylene glycol complex of dioctahedral smectites varies under room conditions between 17.3 and 16.5 Å because of such factors as layer charge density, type of interlayer cation, and relative humidity. Neglecting this variability can give up to 30% error in the X-ray powder diffraction estimation of the smectite:illite ratio of the mixed-layer structures. Three methods have been developed for the interpretation of X-ray powder diffraction patterns of glycolated mixed-layer illite/smectite which take layer-spacing variability into account. The methods include a technique for quantifying the degree of layer ordering. In addition, the proposed techniques minimize the error due to the influence of domain size on positions of reflections. The experimental error can be kept below 5% or below 1% smectite layers, depending on the method applied, provided that the peak positions are measured with the accuracy of ± 0.02°2θ.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of interlayer molecular structure in monolayer hydrates of Na-saturated Wyoming-type montmorillonites and vermiculite were performed. Detailed comparison of the stimulation results with experimental diffraction and thermodynamic data for these clay-water systems indicated good semiquantitative to quantitative agreement. The MC simulations revealed that, in the monolayer hydrate, interlayer water molecules tend to increase their occupation of the midplane as layer charge increases. As the percentage of tetrahedral layer charge increases, water molecules are induced to interact with the siloxane surface O atoms through hydrogen bonding and Na+ counter-ions are induced to form inner-sphere surface complexes. These results suggest the need for careful diffraction experiments on a series of monolayer hydrates of montmorillonite whose layer charge and tetrahedral isomorphic substitution charge vary systematically.

The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory sums the attractive van der Waals and repulsive electrostatic forces as a function of separation distance to predict the interaction between charged particles immersed in a liquid. In aqueous media, however, non-electrostatic polar (electron acceptor/electron donor or Lewis acid/base) forces between particles with high energy surfaces often are comparable to, or greater than, the components of DLVO theory. By means of contact angle measurements on smooth self-supporting clay films, the values of the polar surface forces (AB) and the van der Waals forces (LW) of hectorite were measured. Determinations of ζ were used to derive the electrostatic forces (EL). Calculations based on the values obtained for the EL, LW, and AB forces show that for smooth spheres with a radius of 1 µm in a ≥ 0.1 M NaCl solution a net attraction exists leading to flocculation. At NaCl concentrations of ≤ 0.01 M, a repulsion energy of about +500 to +1300 kT exists at separation distances ≤ 50 Å, preventing contact between particles, thus ensuring stability of the colloidal suspension. At these concentrations, theory predicts that small clay particles or edges of clay crystals having an effective radius of curvature ≤ 10 Å should be energetic enough to overcome the repulsion barrier which prevents flocculation. Experimentally, for NaCl solution concentrations of ≥ 0.1 M, suspensions of hectorite particles flocculated, whereas at concentrations of ≥ 0.01 M, the suspensions remained stable. These experimental results agree with the predictions made by summing all three forces, but contradict the calculations based on classical DLVO theory.

Aluminum-substituted hematites (Fe2−xAlxO3) were synthesized from Fe-Al coprecipitates at pH 5.5, 7.0, and in 10−1, 10−2, and 10−2 M KOH at 70°C. As little as 1 mole % Al suppressed goethite completely at pH 7 whereas in KOH higher Al concentrations were necessary. Al substitution as determined chemically and by XRD line shift was related to Al addition up to a maximum of 16–17 mole %. The relationship between the crystallographic a0 parameter and Al substitution deviated from the Vegard rule. At low substitution crystallinity of the hematites was improved whereas higher substitution impeded crystal growth in the crystallographic z-direction as indicated by differential XRD line broadening. At still higher Al addition crystal growth was strongly retarded. The initial Al-Fe coprecipitate behaved differently from a mechanical mixture of the respective “hydroxides” and was, therefore, considered an aluminous ferrihydrite.

Thirty six bentonite samples from 16 different locations were examined in order to demonstrate the applicability of a new Rietveld description approach for quantitative phase analysis. X-ray diffraction patterns of the bulk material were obtained and analyzed by the Rietveld method. The samples contain up to ten different minerals, with dioctahedral smectite as the major component. A model for turbostratic disorder of smectites was formulated inside a structure-description file of the Rietveld program BGMN. The quality of the refinements was checked using an internal standard mineral (10.0 or 20.0 wt.% corundum) and by cross-checking results with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data. The corundum content was reproduced with only small deviations from the nominal values. A comparison of the chemical composition obtained by XRF and the composition as re-calculated from quantitative Rietveld results shows a satisfactory agreement, although X-ray amorphous components such as volcanic glasses were not considered. As a result of this study, the Rietveld method combined with the new structure model for turbostratic disorder has proven to be a suitable method for routine quantitative analysis of bentonites with smectites as the dominant clay minerals.

Exchange reactions of Na-montmorillonite with zirconyl chloride solutions give products with basal spacings near 18 Å which are stable to 500°C and have surface areas of the order of 300–400 m2/g. The Na ions are exchanged with tetrameric hydroxy cations [Zr4(OH)14•nH2O]2+. The high surface area is attributed to the porosity formed by stable zirconium oxide “pillars” formed by dehydroxylation of the complex cation. The nitrogen adsorption isotherms are of Langmuir type and are consistent with adsorption in interlayer micropores. Reduced-charge montmorillonites, formed by application of the Hofmann-Klemen procedure, give either similar or slightly smaller surface areas.

Mössbauer and i.r. spectra of a series of nontronites show that Fe3+ and Al3+ are distributed between tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The Mössbauer results have reaffirmed the occupation by Fe3+ of octahedral sites at which these ions are coordinated to pairs of OH groups in both cis and trans configurations. The distribution of Fe3+ between these two sites varies considerably but in all of the nontronites some Fe3+ occurs in the trans site in contrast to the all cis occupancy of the centro-symmetric structure proposed by Mering and Oberlin (1967). In one of the nontronites the distribution of Fe3+ between these two sites approaches that in the ideal non-centrosymmetric structure proposed for montmorillonite.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a species of metal-reducing bacteria with a versatile respiratory metabolism. This study reports that S. putrefaciens strain MR-1 rapidly reduces Fe(III) within smectite clay minerals. Up to 15% of the structural Fe within ferruginous smectite (sample SWa-1, Source Clays Repository of the Clay Minerals Society) was reduced by MR-1 in 4 h, and a range of 25% to 41% of structural Fe was reduced after 6 to 12 d during culture. Conditions for which smectite reduction was optimal, that is, pH 5 to 6, at 25 to 37 °C, are consistent with an enzymatic process and not with simple chemical reduction. Smectite reduction required viable cells, and was coupled to energy generation and carbon metabolism for MR-1 cultures with smectite added as the sole electron acceptor. Iron(III) reduction catalyzed by MR-1 was inhibited under aerobic conditions, and under anaerobic conditions it was inhibited by the addition of nitrate as an alternate electron acceptor or by the metabolic inhibitors tetrachlorosali-cylanilide (TCS) or quinacrine hydrochloride. Genetic mutants of MR-1 deficient in anaerobic respiration reduced significantly less structural Fe than wild-type cells. In a minimal medium with formate or lactate as the electron donor, more than three times the amount of smectite was reduced over no-carbon controls. These data point to at least one mechanism that may be responsible for the microbial reduction of clay minerals within soils, namely, anaerobic respiration, and indicate that pure cultures of MR-1 provide an effective model system for soil scientists and mineralogists interested in clay reduction. Given the ubiquitous distribution and versatile metabolism of MR-1, these studies may have further implications for bioremediation and water quality in soils and sediments.

Clays can act as osmotic membranes and thus give rise to osmotically induced hydrostatic pressures. The magnitude of generated osmotic pressures in geologic systems is governed by the theoretical osmotic pressure calculated solely from solution properties and by value of the membrane's three phe-nomenological coefficients: the hydraulic permeability coefficient, Lp; the reflection coefficient, σ; and the solute permeability coefficient, ω. Generally, low values of Lp correspond to highly compacted membranes in which σ is near unity and ω approaches zero. Such membrane systems should give rise to initially high osmotic fluxes and gradual dissipation of their osmotic potentials.

The high fluid pressures in the Dunbarton Triassic basin, South Carolina, are a good example of osmotically induced potentials. A unique osmotic cell is created by the juxtaposition of fresh water in the overlying Cretaceous sediments against the saline pore water housed within the membrane-functioning sediments of the Triassic basin. Because wells penetrating the saline core of the basin show anomalously high heads relative to wells penetrating the basin margins, the longevity of this osmotic cell is probably dictated by the rate at which salt diffuses out into the overlying fresh water aquifer.

Mining operations during the early 1990s at Uley Graphite Mine near Port Lincoln on southern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, uncovered abundant nontronite veins in deeply weathered granulite facies schist, gneiss, and amphibolite of Palaeoproterozoic age. Two types of nontronite are present: a bright yellowish-green clay (NAu-1) distributed as veinlets and diffuse alteration zones within kaolinized schist and gneiss, and a massive to earthy, dark-brown clay (NAu-2) infilling fracture networks mainly in amphibolite or basic granulite. The nontronites are the product of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration of primary minerals, biotite, and amphibole. The principal chemical difference between NAu-1 and NAu-2 is a higher alumina content in NAu-1, which was either inherited during hydrothermal alteration of biotite in the host rock or acquired through recrystallization of nontronite during subsequent weathering and associated kaolinization. Sufficient bulk samples of both NAu-1 and NAu-2 were collected to supplement reference nontronite of the Source Clay Repository of The Clay Minerals Society. The clay fraction of the bulk samples is typically >85%. NAu-1 contains minor kaolin and quartz which are easily removed to give a high purity nontronite of composition M+1.05[Si6.98Al1.02][Al0.29Fe3.68Mg0.04]O20(OH)4, similar to that of nontronite from Garfield, Washington. NAu-2 contains fewer total impurities but the presence of trace amounts of submicron carbonate and iron oxyhydroxide requires additional chemical treatment to produce a nontronite of purity comparable to NAu-1. Composition of NAu-2 was calculated as M+0.72[Si7.55Al0.45][Fe3.83Mg0.05]O20(OH)4, although infrared data indicate that at least some Fe is in tetrahedral coordination.

The dissolution of synthetic magnetite, maghemite, hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and akaganeite was faster in HCl than in HClO4. In the presence of H+, the Cl− ion increased the dissolution rate, but the ClO4− ion had no effect, suggesting that the formation of Fe-Cl surface complexes assists dissolution. The effect of temperature on the initial dissolution rate can be described by the Arrhenius equation, with dissolution rates in the order: lepidocrocite > magnetite > akaganeite > maghemite > hematite > goethite. Activation energies and frequency factors for these minerals are 20.0, 19.0, 16.0, 20.3, 20.9, 22.5 kcal/mole and 5.8 × 1011, 1.8 × 1010, 7.4 × 107, 5.1 × 1010, 2.1 × 1010, 3.0 × 1011 g Fe dissolved/m2/hr, respectively. The complete dissolution of magnetite, maghemite, hematite, and goethite is well described by the cube-root law, whereas that of lepidocrocite is not.

By ion exchanging expandable clay minerals with large, cationic oxyaluminum polymers, “pillars” were introduced that permanently prop open the clay layers. On the basis of thermal, infrared spectroscopic, adsorption, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, the interlayering of commercial sodium bentonite with aluminum chlorohydroxide, [Al13O4(OH)24(H2O)12]+7, polymers appears to have produced an expanded clay with a surface area of 200–300 m2/g. The pillared product contained both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites. XRD and differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the micropore structure of this interlayered clay is stable to 540°C. Between 540° and 760°C, the pillared clay collapsed with a corresponding decrease in surface area (to 55 m2/g) and catalytic cracking activity for a Kuwait gas oil having a 260°-426°C boiling range.

This paper thoroughly describes the decomposition procedure, using the example of DECOMPXR (Lanson 1990). The steps of the decomposition procedure are: 1) preliminary data processing; 2) decomposition; 3) validation of results; and 4) use of the results. The use of decomposition is restricted to the separation of contributions from various phases. The effect of preliminary data processing steps (data smoothing, background stripping) on profile shape is shown to be limited and their implementation is detailed. Potential experimental limitations such as peak symmetry, experimental reproducibility or discrimination are equally minor. A logical decomposition process starts from the definition of the angular range to be fitted, proceeds with the determination of the number of elementary peaks to be fitted and ends with the check for results consistency.

Numerical data processing is a powerful tool for the accurate identification of monophases, because of the additional parameters available to constrain XRD profile simulation. Ultimately, however, the match over the whole angular range of both the experimental and the simulated patterns remains the only valid way to characterize the phases present in the sample. Additionally, the decomposition procedure permits both the identification of complex clay mineral assemblages and the characterization of their evolution. This step constrains, and may help to determine, the reaction mechanisms of a transformation; and, as a consequence, to characterize and to model the kinetics of this transformation.

Diagenetic clay minerals usually occur as heterogeneous assemblages of submicroscopic layers consisting of different structure types such as illite, smectite and chlorite, with variable composition within a given structure type, and with highly variable concentrations of imperfections. The dimensions of mixed-layering, the semi-coherent to coherent nature of the structures across the layering, and compositional heterogeneity occur at a scale well below that of an individual thermodynamic phase. These relations imply that most clays are not distinct minerals or phases, and that assemblages of clays in shales and mudstones are incompatible with the phase rule. Such relations are better evaluated in terms of the formation of metastable materials with each small unit having unique chemical properties, rather than as a small number of stable homogeneous phases. Consequently, treatment of most clay minerals in terms of equilibrium stability with either a thermodynamic or experimental approach is subject to error.

Chemical reactions involving most clay minerals are best understood with kinetic models. These involve a great variety of parameters such as time, fluid/rock ratio, deformation history, nature of starting materials and transformation mechanisms, as well as the variables, such as temperature, pressure and composition, that are commonly used to define equilibrium. Solubility experiments on the stabilities of clay minerals are unlikely to attain equilibrium at low temperatures. Moreover, the activity of soluble species may be controlled by surface equilibria, or by absorbed or exchangeable cations. Interpretations of available experiments on the solubility of illite vs. other mineral assemblages are in violation of Schreinemakers’ rules and indicate lack of equilibrium.

Predictable sequences of clay minerals as a function of temperature are best understood through the Ostwald step rule, in which clay mineral assemblages undergo reactions in response to kinetic factors that represent reaction progress rather than an approach to equilibrium. Currently used clay mineral thermometers (illite crystallinity, smectite/illite reaction, chlorite composition) are not based on equilibrium reactions. Such systems are not accurate thermometers and therefore have questionable utility.

A method using 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) to quantify Fe(II) and total Fe in nonrefractory minerals was modified to improve the accuracy and precision and to eliminate the inconvenience of performing much of the analysis under darkroom conditions. Reagents were combined to minimize solution-handling errors, volumes of the reagent additions were determined gravimetrically and the acid-matrix solution was preheated to near-boiling before sample contact. The darkness requirement, which stems from the photoreduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in the presence of phen, was eliminated by the use of opaque amber-colored high-density-polyethylene bottles during the digestion step and for storage of the digestate and subsequent dilutions before Fe(II) analysis. Reduction of Fe(III) for total-Fe analysis was accomplished either by exposure to light from a Hg-vapor lamp or by reaction with hydroxylamine, NH2OH. Although the minimum periods required for adequate reduction ranged from 1.5 to 4 h, the optimum reduction periods were between 6 and 10 h. When standard samples containing Fe(II) and MnCl2 were digested and analyzed for total-Fe using the light treatment (with incidental heating to 35–45 °C), significant decreases and in some instances, oscillations, in absorptivity were obtained. Similar experiments with NH2OH, or with CrCl3 showed no effect. The absorptivity of most digestates stored in opaque bottles was stable for at least 2 weeks, although digestates with Mn concentrations above 3 µg mL−1 showed proportional decreases in absorptivity. Analysis of 8 geochemical reference materials by the modified method (using NH2OH) yielded excellent agreement with published values and a mean relative standard deviation of 0.6%. Total-Fe results obtained using the light treatment, however, were generally lower (∼2% relative) than the NH2OH values, although this difference decreased with longer irradiation periods. Use of NH2OH was deemed preferable because it was simpler, faster, minimized interferences from Mn and eliminated the need for specialized apparatus. Lastly, MICA Fe was shown to be unreliable as a primary reference material for Fe(II) determinations.

This paper compares mechanisms of the reaction of smectite to illite, in light of structural models for interstratified illite/smectite (I/S). The crystal structure of I/S has been described previously by a nonpolar and polar 2:1 layer model. In a nonpolar model, individual 2:1 layers are chemically homogeneous, whereas a polar model assumes a 2:1 layer can have a smectite charge on one side and an illite charge on the other side. Several kinds of data support the polar model; however, more determinations of the negative charge of expandable sites in I/S are needed to confirm such a model.

Assuming a polar 2:1 layer model for I/S, we compare the mineralogical and geochemical consequences of several reaction mechanisms for smectite illitization: 1) solid-state transformation (SST), 2) dissolution and crystallization (DC) and 3) Ostwald ripening (OR). Features of an SST model are the replacement of smectite interlayers by illite interlayers, resulting in gradual changes in interlayer ordering, polytype, chemical and isotopic composition and crystal size and shape. Several SST models are possible depending on the nature of the reaction site (framework cations, polyhedra or interlayers). In contrast, DC models allow for abrupt changes in the structure, composition and texture of I/S as illitization proceeds. Several DC models are possible depending on the nature of the rate-controlling step, for example, diffusional transport or surface reactions during crystal growth. The OR model represents the coarsening of a single mineral where the smallest crystals dissolve and nucleate onto existing larger crystals, allowing for evolution in the overgrowth but not in the template crystal.

An SST mechanism, involving either reacting polyhedra or reacting interlayers, seems to best model illitization in rock-dominated systems such as bentonite. A DC mechanism seems to best model illitization in fluid-dominated systems such as sandstone and hydrothermal environments. Both DC and SST mechanisms can occur in shale. Differences in reaction mechanism may be related to permeability. An OR model poorly describes illitization because of the progressive mineralogical and chemical changes involved. For many geologic environments, it is important to consider alternate origins for I/S such as kaolinite illitization and detrital. Further work is needed to clarify the DC crystal growth process in terms of a structural model of I/S and to determine which specific SST or DC model best characterizes illitization in geologic systems.

Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted on thirteen compacted clayey soils being used for compacted clay liners at landfills throughout the United States. The soils were prepared to various molding water contents and then compacted and permeated in the laboratory. Results of the tests show that for all of the soils, zones exist in the compaction plane (i.e., dry unit weight vs. water content) where the hydraulic conductivity is similar. These zones fall roughly parallel to contours of constant initial saturation (degree of saturation at compaction), with lower hydraulic conductivities generally occurring for conditions corresponding to higher initial saturation. Wet of the line of optimums, lower hydraulic conductivity is also attained for soils that are more plastic and have a greater quantity of fines. A regression equation was developed from the data to estimate hydraulic conductivity given the initial saturation, compactive effort, plasticity index, and clay content.

X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra were collected on a series of ferrihydrite samples prepared over a range of precipitation and drying conditions. Analysis of the XAFS pre-edge structures shows clear evidence of the presence of lower coordination sites in the material. These sites, which are most likely tetrahedral, are believed to be at the surface and become coordination unsaturated (CUS) after dehydroxylation. With chemisorbed water molecules, the CUS sites become the crystal growth sites responsible for the phase transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite at low temperatures. On the other hand, when impurity anions such as SiO4−4 are present in the precipitation solution, the CUS sites may instead absorb the impurity anions, thereby blocking the crystal growth sites and inhibiting the formation of hematite.
