Organoclays are sorbent materials prepared from clays by exchanging inorganic with organic cations. Their properties depend on the loading and conformational structure of the organic cations, but little information is available about the surface structures of organoclays. In this work, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are combined to characterize the external interface of an organoclay prepared from hexadecylpyridinium (HDPy+) and bentonite. The XPS survey spectra show well the varying elemental composition of the surface with increasing amount of surfactant, showing a decreasing contribution of clay-derived elements with increasing organic coverage. The high-resolution C 1s XPS spectra depict sensitively the surface arrangement of the surfactant. In combination with MD simulations, the results implied a monolayer coating for low surfactant coverage and a disordered bilayer arrangement at high surfactant uptakes. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that for very high cation uptake a quasi-paraffin-like configuration is also possible. The combination of experimental and modelling methods yielded congruent information on the molecular-scale arrangement of organic cations at the organoclay surfaces and the controlling mechanisms.

Anisotropy and compositional and structural heterogeneity in clays are causes of considerable deviations from homogeneous diffusion, in particular in terms of direction-dependent transport rates and preferred transport zones. Conventional diffusion experiments, in which the sample is treated as a homogeneous black box in a concentration gradient, are interminable and insensitive to spatial effects. In contrast, tomographic imaging methods are capable of both reducing the amount of observation time required and revealing space-dependent features of the diffusion process.

In the present study, positron-emission-tomography (PET) was applied as the most sensitive quantitative spatiotemporal tomographic modality for direct observation of positron-emitting radiotracers in opaque media at reasonable resolution (1 mm) on a laboratory scale (100 mm).

Geoscientific applications of PET, or GeoPET, have revealed anisotropic and heterogeneous effects in diffusion experiments that have been conducted on Opalinus clay samples of different sizes, as well as on other rock types. Applying the Comsol Optimization Module to 2D-image sections of the PET tomograms, effective parameter values were derived, thereby quantifying the anisotropic diffusion.

Molecular cluster models, developed for an exfoliated kaolinite, provide a structural description comparable to that of periodic slab models for a fraction of the computational cost. These models include both the octahedral and the tetrahedral sheets of kaolinite. The first-generation model (G1) contains the inner and outer coordination sphere of the Al- and Si-honeycombs as the preferred sites for adsorption of small organic molecules. Since no experimental information is available to date at the atomic level for exfoliated kaolinite, we carried out a systematic density functional theory evaluation for establishing the most reasonable coordinates of the ions and groups. The results of molecular cluster and periodic calculations were utilized for evaluating semi-empirical Hamiltonians on larger models. Using a PM7 Hamiltonian, the structure of cluster models containing 1 + 6 (second generation) and 1 + 6 + 12 (third generation) Al- and Si-honeycombs which are out of reach for ab initio calculations, were determined. These molecular slab models offer a structural platform for adsorption, intercalation and delamination studies.

One of today's big challenges is to store safely the increasing amount of high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) in the world. In some of the concepts devised for this challenge, bentonite, a natural swelling clay, plays a key role in encasing the canisters containing the waste. The use of bentonite as a geotechnical barrier in HLRWrepositories is a new venture; specifications to ensure either optimum performance or that a minimum standard is reached at least do not exist yet. The present study summarizes relevant research and discusses possible HLRW-bentonite specifications. The importance of these specifications for any given repositories has to be assessed on a case by case basis, depending on the concept being employed and any special circumstances for the individual repositories.

Ten key issues were identified which were used to discuss bentonite specifications. In some of these key issues the optimum bentonite performance depended more on processing and production (compaction) than on the bentonite type (e.g. swelling pressure and thermal conductivity). In contrast, in some of the other key issues, the type of bentonite was found to influence possible specifications: the bentonite should not alter its mineral composition or its geotechnical parameters such as the swellability. Therefore, the bentonite should contain neither soluble nor reactive phases (e.g. organic matter, pyrite, gypsum). The structural Fe content of the smectites should be small because of the lesser stability and greater reactivity of the Fe-rich bentonites. Also, a large layer-charge density of the swelling clay minerals leads to less corrosion at the iron–bentonite interface (relevant if iron canisters are used). The hydraulic conductivity and swelling pressure can be tailored by compaction of the bentonite resulting in different dry densities. From an engineering point of view, a bentonite with least dependence of the hydraulic conductivity/swelling pressure on the dry density would be best. Using a bentonite which has been investigated extensively over many years means less uncertainty compared to unknown materials.

The present study determined the mineralogy and thermal properties of kaolin from Acoculco (Puebla), at the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and compared it with the nearby deposits of Agua Blanca (Hidalgo) and Huayacocotla (Veracruz). The mineralogy of the kaolins was determined by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal behaviour was studied by differential thermal analysis, dilatometry and hot-stage microscopy. The Acoculco deposit is composed mainly of kaolinite and SiO2 minerals. In the case of Agua Blanca and Huayacocotla, alunite is abundant in places and minor anatase is also present locally. The Acoculco kaolins are Fe-poor and relatively rich in some potentially toxic elements (Zr, Sb, Pb). They undergo a relatively small amount of shrinkage (∼3–4 vol.%), during firing at 20–1300°C and cooling down to 20°C, except when >10 wt.% alunite is present. These kaolins are a suitable raw material for the ceramics industry. Other applications (pharmaceuticals, cosmetics) would require an enrichment process to eliminate impurities such as Fe oxides.

Understanding the composition of clay-rich sediments and their transportation into proximal marine basins allows us to better decipher hydroclimatic changes before and within the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Only a limited number of such studies exists from the North Sea Basin, which was proximal to the volcanic activity and early rifting hypothesized to have triggered the PETM. The present study examines core material from well 22/10a-4, UK North Sea, as it exhibits an exceptionally expanded and almost stratigraphically complete fine-grained sedimentary sequence suitable for high-resolution analysis.

Quantitative Newmod-for-Windows™-modelled clay mineral assemblages, rather than traditional semi-quantitative estimates, are dominated by smectite-rich, interlayered illite-smectite that probably developed from volcanogenic deposits on continental landmasses. Soil development before the PETM is consistent with the existence of a seasonal tropical climate with a prolonged dry season. A striking rise and fall of kaolinite content within the PETM onset, prior to the principal carbon-isotope excursion, is reported here. This variation is interpreted as a signal of an enhanced hydrologic cycle producing an increase in erosionally derived kaolinite, followed by a dampening of this detrital source as sea-levels rose. Global variations in PETM kaolinite concentrations are consistent with a latitudinal shift in patterns of precipitation in models of global warming.

A decade of research on clays that kill human pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), has documented their common characteristics. Worldwide, ∼5% of clays tested to date are antibacterial when hydrated. Most antibacterial clays are from hydrothermally altered volcanics, where volcanogenic fluids produce minerals containing reduced metals. Ferruginous illite-smectite (I-S) is the most common clay mineral, although kaolins dominate some samples. Antibacterial clay mineral assemblages may contain other reduced Fe minerals (e.g. pyrite) that drive production of reactive oxygen species (H2O2, •OH, •O2−) and cause damage to cell membranes and intracellular proteins. Ion exchange can also cause loss of bacterial membrane-bound Ca2+, Mg2+ and PO43–.

Critically important is the role of clays in buffering the hydration water pH to conditions where Al and Fe are soluble. A nanometric particle size (<200 nm) is characteristic of antibacterial clays and may be a feature that promotes dissolution. Clay interlayers or the lumen of tubular clays may absorb reduced transition metals, protecting them from oxidation. When the clays are mixed with deionized water for medicinal applications, these metals are released and oxidized.

Different antibacterial clays exhibit different modes of action. The minerals may be a source of toxins, or by adsorption may deprive bacteria of essential nutrients. In the field, the pH and Eh (oxidation state) of the hydrated clay may help to identify potential antibacterial clays. If the pH is circum-neutral, toxic metals are not soluble. However, at pH < 5 or >9 many metals are soluble and the oxidation of transition metals increases the Eh of the suspension to >400 mV, leading to bacterial oxidation.

Understanding the antibacterial mechanism of natural clay may lead to design of new treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with potential applications in wound dressings, medical implants ( joint replacements, catheters), animal feed stocks, agricultural pathogens, and production of antibacterial building materials. This research exemplifies how ‘geomimicry’ (copying geochemical processes) may open new frontiers in science.

Calcigel bentonite-polyacrylamide (PAA) composites were investigated for their formation characteristics and their macroscopic hydro-mechanical and microscopic structural properties. The composites prepared were different in terms of the polymer charge, i.e. cationic (PAA+), anionic (PAA−), non-ionic (PAA°) and in terms of the polymer-to-clay ratio. The latter varied according to the individual maximum sorption capacity established from adsorption isotherms. Oedometer and waterretention testswere conducted on composites prepared under initial slurry conditions. The microstructure of the composites was investigated using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). At low stress, distinctly increased void ratios were found for all types of the composites, whereas under highstress conditions only the PAA+-composite prepared at 100% of the maximum sorption capacity showed an increase in void ratio. Analyses by ESEM on this composite indicated structural changes related to the preferential face-to-face aggregation, which help to explain the macroscopic behaviour and also account for the increased hydraulic permeabilities observed.

X-ray diffraction is one of the most effective tools for the characterization of the stacking defects which occur frequently in clay minerals. Modelling of the diffraction patterns of oriented mounts is often used for obtaining structural information about the nature of stacking order. Manual matching of calculated and observed patterns is time consuming and the results are user dependent and especially troublesome if a consistent model of the same mineral measured under different conditions needs to be obtained. It was shown recently that the Rietveld method could be applied successfully for the evaluation of the X-ray patterns of oriented mounts. Nevertheless, this automatic refinement procedure can also lead to inconsistent results if independent refinements are performed that describe the same sample measured under different conditions. One way to solve this problem is the application of parametric Rietveld refinement. For this approach a set of different measurements of the same sample was collected and fitted in one combined refinement by the connection of the structural models via external parameters. These conditions may involve different pre-treatments (e.g. different intercalations), different temperatures or relative humidities and/or different experimental setup (powder or oriented samples). All patterns were fitted in one overall refinement process by the BGMN software.

This approach was demonstrated on a mixture of two disordered reference materials and on a set of geological samples. Two different states for each sample were refined independently and parametrically and it was shown that this approach leads to consistent results, saves computation time and may even resolve small structural differences.

Compacted bentonite is to be used as a buffer material between waste canisters and the bedrock in the deep geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste in several countries. In spite of the fact that such large bentonite systems have long equilibration times, estimation of the material properties and performance in repository conditions is often based on short-term, laboratory-scale experiments. Sample-preparation procedures in these experiments may differ from the natural evolution of the bentonite in the repository, however, affecting the bentonite properties. The present study reports the influence on the structure of clay tactoids of four different preparation procedures of water-saturated, compacted MX-80 bentonite samples using four target dry bulk densities. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to illustrate the differences between the samples. The different treatments of the bentonite samples may lead to different structural features. Clear differences between low-density samples prepared using different procedures were observed. The influence of the preparation methods was less, but still noticeable, for the high-density samples.

Bentonite colloids generated from the backfill barrier in nuclear waste repositories may act as radionuclide carriers, if they are stable and mobile. Repository scenarios with highly saline groundwater inhibit colloid stability as particles tend to aggregate but, in the time frame of repositories, groundwater conditions may evolve, promoting particle disaggregation and stabilization. The disaggregation of FEBEX bentonite colloids by fast dilution to lower ionic strength was analysed in this study. Time-resolved dynamic light-scattering experiments were carried out to evaluate the kinetics of bentonite colloid aggregation and disaggregation processes in Na+ and Na+-Ca2+ mixed electrolytes of low ionic strength. Attachment and detachment efficiencies were determined.

Aggregation is promoted by increasing ionic strength, being more efficient in the presence of divalent cations. Once bentonite colloids are aggregated, a decrease in ionic strength facilitates disaggregation, but the process is not fully reversible as the initial size of the stable bentonite colloids at low ionic strength is not fully recovered. Particle-size distribution and concentration in suspension were analysed on disaggregated samples by single particle-counting measurements. Small colloids were measured in the disaggregated samples but their population was smaller than in the initial stable sample, especially in the presence of Ca2+.

The Swedish and Finnish nuclear waste repository design, KBS-3H, foresees horizontal emplacement of copper canisters-bentonite modules surrounded by a titanium shell. The interaction of titanium with bentonite was studied here using a combination of wet chemistry and a spectroscopic approach to evaluate the potential impact of Ti corrosion on the clay. For natural analogue clays with high Ti contents, spectroscopic investigations showed that titanium occurs as crystalline TiO2. In contrast, the Ti in the MX-80 bentonite occurs in the clay structure, presumably in the octahedral sheet. Hydrothermal tests conducted at 200°C using synthetic montmorillonite showed little if any change in the montmorillonite structure at near-neutral and acidic conditions. Under alkaline conditions, limited alteration was observed, including the formation of trioctahedral clay minerals and zeolite. These changes, however, occurred independently of the addition of Ti. In the batch tests conducted at 80°C, Ti did not occur as separate TiO2 particles. The comparison of experimental data with spectroscopic simulations provides sound evidence that Ti was incorporated in a neoformed phyllosilicate structure.

Concepts for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste usually include bentonite buffer materials. Numerous studies have been performed with most usingWyoming bentonite. Gaomiaozi (GMZ) bentonite has been selected as a potential buffer/backfill material for the deep geological repository of high-level radioactive waste in China. In this context, the highly alkaline environment induced by cementitious materials in the repository is likely to alter montmorillonite, the main clay mineral in GMZ bentonite. This alteration may result in deterioration of the physical and/or chemical properties of the buffer material. To acquire quantitative data which would allow us to assess the dissolution of montmorillonite and changes in the diffusivity of hydroxide ions as well as their effects on the swelling pressure and permeability of the compacted GMZ bentonite, an experimental study was conducted under highly alkaline (NaOH solutions with various pH values were used), simulated groundwater conditions. The GMZ bentonite also contains cristobalite which may also have been dissolved. The microstructure of the compacted bentonite samples after the experiments was determined by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) was carried out to identify mineralogical changes. At pH >13, the permeability of specimens increased significantly; the swelling potential decreased with increasing pH. Furthermore, the pore volume and pore size of GMZ bentonite changed when exposed to alkaline solution, resulting in an increase in porosity and permeability. The main alteration mechanisms of compacted GMZ bentonite undergoing infiltration by highly alkaline solution are likely to be dissolution and modifications in terms of the microstructure and mineralogy.

Compacted bentonite is to be used as a component of an engineered barrier system to retard the migration of radionuclides in the geological disposal of radioactive waste. In such an environment, montmorillonite in compacted bentonite might be altered to illite due to the hydrothermal reactions caused by the decay heat of radionuclides. In the present study, the diffusion and retention behaviour of Cs in compacted montmorillonite containing illitewas investigated using through-diffusion experiments. The experimental results showed that the flux of Cs attributed to the surface diffusion was independent of the sorption of Cs on illite, indicating that the Cs sorbed on illite was immobile or considerably less mobile than the Cs sorbed on montmorillonite. Consequently, the illite content in compacted bentonite is expected to enhance the sorption capacity of Cs without causing surface diffusion.

Interest in mineral–microbe interaction has grown enormously over recent decades, providing information in a puzzle-like manner which points towards an ever increasingly intimate relationship between the two; a relationship that can be truly termed co-evolution. Clay minerals play a very central role in this co-evolving system. Some 20 years ago, clay scientists looked at clay mineral–microbe studies as a peripheral interest only. Now, can clay scientists think that they understand the formation of clay minerals throughout geological history if they do not include life in their models? The answer is probably no, but we do not yet know the relative weight of biological and inorganic factors involved in driving clay-mineral formation and transformation. Similarly, microbiologists are missing out important information if they do not investigate the influence and modifications that minerals, particularly clay minerals, have on microbial activity and evolution. This review attempts to describe the several points relating clay minerals and microorganisms that have been discovered so far. The information obtained is still very incomplete and many opportunities exist for clay scientists to help to write the real history of the biosphere.

The two high-pressure water-retaining dams at the Ibbenbüren coalmine in Münsterland (Germany) have to perform reliably under the induced tension caused by further exploitation of the current mining area. The load-bearing and the sealing functions of the new barriers were separated and new sealing materials were developed. An innovative multilayer sealing system of bentonite and sandwiched equipotential layers (SANDWICH) supporting homogeneous swelling and sealing, independent of formation water (Nüesch et al., 2002), was applied in this project. A testing program of strain-controlled swelling pressure tests on compacted bentonite specimens and on a bentonite/sand mixture was conducted to ensure an adequate potential for swelling-pressure development.

The measurements under constant volume for dry densities between 1.45 g/cm3 and 1.67 g/cm3 showed an evolving swelling pressure between 1.04 and 1.8 MPa for 100% bentonite samples. Straincontrolled oedometer tests for zero strain and step-wise applied strain up to 2% revealed that a sufficient magnitude of swelling pressure existed at maximum applied strain.

Following a round-table discussion at the Mid-European Clay Conference in Dresden 2014, new recommendations for illite ‘crystallinity’ Kübler index standardization have been agreed upon. The use of Crystallinity Index standards in the form of rock-fragment samples will be continued, along with the same numerical scale of measurement presented by Warr & Rice (1994). However, in order to be compatible with the original working definition of Kübler's (1967) anchizone, the upper and lower boundary limits of the Crystallinity Index Standard (CIS) scale are adjusted appropriately from 0.25°2θ and 0.42°2θ to 0.32°2θ and 0.52°2θ. This adjustment is based on an inter-laboratory correlation between the laboratories of Basel, Neuchâtel and the CIS scale. The details of this correction are presented in this first note, as discussed at the round-table meeting and will be further substantiated by a correlation program between CIS and former Kübler–Frey–Kisch standards.

The swelling and cation exchange properties of montmorillonite are fundamental in a wide range of applications ranging from nanocomposites to catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons. The swelling results from several factors and, though widely studied, information on the effects of a single factor at a time is lacking. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to obtain atomic-level information on the swelling of montmorillonite. Molecular dynamics (MD) was used to investigate the swelling properties of montmorillonites with different layer charges and interlayer cationic compositions. Molecular dynamics calculations, with CLAYFF force field, consider three layer charges (−1.0, −0.66 and −0.5 e per unit cell) arising from octahedral substitutions and interlayer counterions of Na, K and Ca. The swelling curves obtained showed that smaller layer charge results in greater swelling but the type of the interlayer cation also has an effect. The DFT calculations were also seen to predict larger d values than MD. The formation of 1, 2 and 3 water molecular layers in the interlayer spaces was observed. Finally, the data from MD calculations were used to predict the selfdiffusion coefficients of interlayer water and cations in different montmorillonites and in general the coefficient increased with increasing water content and with decreasing layer charge.

The highly alkaline environment induced by cementitious materials in a deep geological disposal system of high-level radioactive waste is likely to alter montmorillonite, the main constituent of bentonite buffer materials. Over long time periods, the alteration may cause the physical and/or chemical barrier functions of the buffer materials to deteriorate. In order to evaluate the long-term alteration behaviour, the dissolution rate, RA (kgm−3 s−1), of compacted pure montmorillonite (Kunipia-F) was investigated experimentally under conditions of hydroxide ion concentration of 0.10—1.0 mol dm−3 at temperatures of 50—90°C. The dissolution rate data, including those from a previous study at 130°C, were formulated as a function of the activity of hydroxide ions, aOH− (mol dm−3), and temperature, T (K), and expressed as RA = 104.5·(aOH−)1.3·e−55000/RT by multiple regression analysis, where R is the gas constant. The dissolution rate of montmorillonite was greater in the compacted montmorillonite than in the compacted sand-bentonite mixtures. The difference can be explained by considering the decrease in aOH− in the mixtures accompanied by dissolution of accessory minerals such as quartz and chalcedony. The dissolution rate model developed for pure montmorillonite is expected to be applied to bentonite mixtures if quantification of the decrease in aOH− is achieved somehow.

Clay-based nanostructures were prepared from kaolinites of varying structural order by two different methods. In the first method the kaolinite-urea precursor, obtained by dry grinding, was intercalated further with triethanolamine and the tetraalkylammonium salt was synthesized in the interlamellar space. Exfoliation was achieved by the use of sodium polyacrylate (PAS). In the second method, the kaolinite-potassium acetate (kaolinite-KAc) precursor, obtained via two different methods, was intercalated further with ethylene glycol (EG) and then n-hexylamine (HA). Intercalation with EG was also achieved by heating either directly or with microwaves. The morphology that results depends on the method of precursor preparation, the method of heat treatment and the degree of structural order of the original clay. Higher structural order facilitates the formation of a tubular morphology, while mechanical treatment and microwave agitation may result in broken tubes. Molecular mechanical (MM) calculations showed that organo-complexes may be exfoliated to a d value of 10–11 Å.
