We prove that the groups presented by finite convergent monadic rewriting systems with generators of finite order are exactly the free products of finitely many finite groups, thereby confirming Gilman’s conjecture in a special case. We also prove that the finite cyclic groups of order at least three are the only finite groups admitting a presentation by more than one finite convergent monadic rewriting system (up to relabelling), and these admit presentation by exactly two such rewriting systems.

In this paper, we present a general framework to construct fractal interpolation surfaces (FISs) on rectangular grids. Then we introduce bilinear FISs, which can be defined without any restriction on interpolation points and vertical scaling factors.

The classes of finite groups with minimal sets of generators of fixed cardinalities, named ${\mathcal{B}}$-groups, and groups with the basis property, in which every subgroup is a ${\mathcal{B}}$-group, contain only $p$-groups and some $\{p,q\}$-groups. Moreover, abelian ${\mathcal{B}}$-groups are exactly $p$-groups. If only generators of prime power orders are considered, then an analogue of property ${\mathcal{B}}$ is denoted by ${\mathcal{B}}_{pp}$ and an analogue of the basis property is called the pp-basis property. These classes are larger and contain all nilpotent groups and some cyclic $q$-extensions of $p$-groups. In this paper we characterise all finite groups with the pp-basis property as products of $p$-groups and precisely described $\{p,q\}$-groups.

We introduce a method named homogeneous PBW deformation that preserves the regularity and some other homological properties for multigraded algebras. The method is used to produce Artin–Schelter regular algebras without the hypothesis on grading.

A Schunck class $\mathfrak{H}$ is determined by the class $\mathfrak{X}$ of primitives contained in $\mathfrak{H}$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $\mathfrak{X}$ for $\mathfrak{H}$ to be a saturated formation.

The relative projection constant${\it\lambda}(Y,X)$ of normed spaces $Y\subset X$ is ${\it\lambda}(Y,X)=\inf \{\Vert P\Vert :P\in {\mathcal{P}}(X,Y)\}$, where ${\mathcal{P}}(X,Y)$ denotes the set of all continuous projections from $X$ onto $Y$. By the well-known result of Bohnenblust, for every $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ and a subspace $Y\subset X$ of codimension one, ${\it\lambda}(Y,X)\leq 2-2/n$. The main goal of the paper is to study the equality case in the theorem of Bohnenblust. We establish an equivalent condition for the equality ${\it\lambda}(Y,X)=2-2/n$ and present several applications. We prove that every three-dimensional space has a subspace with the projection constant less than $\frac{4}{3}-0.0007$. This gives a nontrivial upper bound in the problem posed by Bosznay and Garay. In the general case, we give an upper bound for the number of ($n-1$)-dimensional subspaces with the maximal relative projection constant in terms of the facets of the unit ball of $X$. As a consequence, every $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ has an ($n-1$)-dimensional subspace $Y$ with ${\it\lambda}(Y,X)<2-2/n$. This contrasts with the separable case in which it is possible that every hyperplane has a maximal possible projection constant.

Given two finitely generated groups that coarsely embed into a Hilbert space, it is known that their wreath product also embeds coarsely into a Hilbert space. We introduce a wreath product construction for general metric spaces $X,Y,Z$ and derive a condition, called the (${\it\delta}$-polynomial) path lifting property, such that coarse embeddability of $X,Y$ and $Z$ implies coarse embeddability of $X\wr _{Z}Y$. We also give bounds on the compression of $X\wr _{Z}Y$ in terms of ${\it\delta}$ and the compressions of $X,Y$ and $Z$.

Catino and Rizzo [‘Regular subgroups of the affine group and radical circle algebras’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.79 (2009), 103–107] established a link between regular subgroups of the affine group and the radical brace over a field on the underlying vector space. We propose new constructions of radical braces that allow us to obtain systematic constructions of regular subgroups of the affine group. In particular, this approach allows to put in a more general context the regular subgroups constructed in Tamburini Bellani [‘Some remarks on regular subgroups of the affine group’ Int. J. Group Theory, 1 (2012), 17–23].

In this paper, we introduce the concept of a semi-parallelogram and obtain some results for the Aleksandrov–Rassias problem using this concept. In particular, we resolve an important case of this problem for mappings preserving two distances with a nonintegral ratio.

In this paper we give a stronger form of Rouché’s theorem for continuous functions.

We prove a cohomological property for a class of finite $p$-groups introduced earlier by Xu, which we call semi-abelian $p$-groups. This result implies that a semi-abelian $p$-group has noninner automorphisms of order $p$, which settles a long-standing problem for this class. We answer also, independetly, an old question posed by Xu about the power structure of semi-abelian $p$-groups.

We show that the dual to any subspace of $c_{0}({\rm\Gamma})$ (${\rm\Gamma}$ is an arbitrary index set) has the strongest possible quantitative version of the Schur property. Further, we establish a relationship between the quantitative Schur property and quantitative versions of the Dunford–Pettis property. Finally, we apply these results to show, in particular, that any subspace of the space of compact operators on $\ell _{p}$ ($1<p<\infty$) with the Dunford–Pettis property automatically satisfies both its quantitative versions.

This paper presents new results concerning the structure of $\text{SI}$-groups and refines and purifies the results obtained in this field by Shalom Feigelstock [‘Additive groups of rings whose subrings are ideals’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.55 (1997), 477–481]. The structure theorem describing torsion-free $\text{SI}$-groups is proved in the associative case. Numerous examples of $\text{SI}$-groups are given. Some inconsistencies in Feigelstock’s article are noted and corrected.

Extremal problems for quadrangles circuminscribed in a circular annulus with the Poncelet porism property are considered. Quadrangles with the maximal and the minimal perimeters are determined. Two conjectures end the paper.

Higgins [‘The Mitsch order on a semigroup’, Semigroup Forum 49 (1994), 261–266] showed that the natural partial orders on a semigroup and its regular subsemigroups coincide. This is why we are interested in the study of the natural partial order on nonregular semigroups. Of particular interest are the nonregular semigroups of linear transformations with lower bounds on the nullity or the co-rank. In this paper, we determine when they exist, characterise the natural partial order on these nonregular semigroups and consider questions of compatibility, minimality and maximality. In addition, we provide many examples associated with our results.

In this note we partially answer a question of Cascales, Orihuela and Tkachuk [‘Domination by second countable spaces and Lindelöf ${\rm\Sigma}$-property’, Topology Appl.158(2) (2011), 204–214] by proving that under $CH$ a compact space $X$ is metrisable provided $X^{2}\setminus {\rm\Delta}$ can be covered by a family of compact sets $\{K_{f}:f\in {\it\omega}^{{\it\omega}}\}$ such that $K_{f}\subset K_{h}$ whenever $f\leq h$ coordinatewise.

Let $(X,d,{\it\mu})$ be a metric measure space satisfying the doubling, reverse doubling and noncollapsing conditions. Let $\mathscr{L}$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on $L^{2}(X,d{\it\mu})$ satisfying a pointwise Gaussian upper bound estimate and Hölder continuity for its heat kernel. In this paper, we introduce the Hardy spaces $H_{\mathscr{L}}^{p}(X)$, $0<p\leq 1$, associated to $\mathscr{L}$ in terms of grand maximal functions and show that these spaces are equivalently characterised by radial and nontangential maximal functions.
