In this paper, we consider the dynamical behaviour of a reaction–diffusion model for a population residing in a one-dimensional habit, with emphasis on the effects of boundary conditions and protection zone. We assume that the population is subjected to a strong Allee effect in its natural domain but obeys a monostable nonlinear growth in the protection zone $[L_1,\, L_2]$ with two constants satisfying $0\leq L_1< L_2$, and the general Robin condition is imposed on $x=0$ (i.e. $u(t,\,0)=bu_x(t,\,0)$ with $b\geq 0$). We show the existence of two critical values $0< L_*\leq L^*$, and prove that a vanishing–transition–spreading trichotomy result holds when the length of protection zone is smaller than $L_*$; a transition–spreading dichotomy result holds when the length of protection zone is between $L_*$ and $L^*$; only spreading happens when the length of protection zone is larger than $L^*$. Based on the properties of $L_*$, we obtain the precise strategies for an optimal protection zone: if $b$ is large (i.e. $b\geq 1/\sqrt {-g'(0)}$), the protection zone should start from somewhere near $0$; while if $b$ is small (i.e. $b< 1/\sqrt {-g'(0)}$), then the protection zone should start from somewhere away from $0$, and as far away from $0$ as possible.

In this paper, we study existence of rotating periodic solutions for p-Laplacian differential systems. We first build a new continuation theorem by topological degree, and then obtain the existence of rotating periodic solutions for two kinds of p-Laplacian differential systems via this continuation theorem, extend some existing relevant results.

By means of a counter-example, we show that the Reilly theorem for the upper bound of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of a compact submanifold of Euclidean space (Reilly, 1977, Comment. Mat. Helvetici, 52, 525–533) does not work for a (codimension ⩾2) compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime. In the search of an alternative result, it should be noted that the original technique in (Reilly, 1977, Comment. Mat. Helvetici, 52, 525–533) is not applicable for a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime. In this paper, a new technique, based on an integral formula on a compact spacelike section of the light cone in Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is developed. The technique is genuine in our setting, that is, it cannot be extended to another semi-Euclidean spaces of higher index. As a consequence, a family of upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is obtained. The equality for one of these inequalities is geometrically characterized. Indeed, the eigenvalue achieves one of these upper bounds if and only if the compact spacelike submanifold lies minimally in a hypersphere of certain spacelike hyperplane. On the way, the Reilly original result is reproved if a compact submanifold of a Euclidean space is naturally seen as a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime through a spacelike hyperplane.

In this paper, we study the self-similar solutions and the time-asymptotic behaviour of solutions for a class of degenerate and singular diffusion equations in the form

where $\lambda>2$ is a constant. The existence, uniqueness and regularity for the self-similar solutions are obtained. In particular, the behaviour at two end points is discussed. Based on the monotonicity property of the self-similar solutions and the comparison principle, we also investigate the time convergence of the solution for the Cauchy problem to the corresponding self-similar solution when the initial data have some decay in space variable.

In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the rigidity of the perimeter inequality under Schwarz symmetrization. The term rigidity refers to the situation in which the equality cases are only obtained by translations of the symmetric set. In particular, we prove that the sufficient conditions for rigidity provided in M. Barchiesi, F. Cagnetti and N. Fusco [Stability of the Steiner symmetrization of convex sets. J. Eur. Math. Soc. 15 (2013), 1245-1278.] are also necessary.

Many connections and dualities in representation theory and Lie theory can be explained using quasi-hereditary covers in the sense of Rouquier. Recent work by the first-named author shows that relative dominant (and codominant) dimensions are natural tools to classify and distinguish distinct quasi-hereditary covers of a finite-dimensional algebra. In this paper, we prove that the relative dominant dimension of a quasi-hereditary algebra, possessing a simple preserving duality, with respect to a direct summand of the characteristic tilting module is always an even number or infinite and that this homological invariant controls the quality of quasi-hereditary covers that possess a simple preserving duality. To resolve the Temperley–Lieb algebras, we apply this result to the class of Schur algebras $S(2, d)$ and their $q$-analogues. Our second main result completely determines the relative dominant dimension of $S(2, d)$ with respect to $Q=V^{\otimes d}$, the $d$-th tensor power of the natural two-dimensional module. As a byproduct, we deduce that Ringel duals of $q$-Schur algebras $S(2,d)$ give rise to quasi-hereditary covers of Temperley–Lieb algebras. Further, we obtain precisely when the Temperley–Lieb algebra is Morita equivalent to the Ringel dual of the $q$-Schur algebra $S(2, d)$ and precisely how far these two algebras are from being Morita equivalent, when they are not. These results are compatible with the integral setup, and we use them to deduce that the Ringel dual of a $q$-Schur algebra over the ring of Laurent polynomials over the integers together with some projective module is the best quasi-hereditary cover of the integral Temperley–Lieb algebra.

In this paper, we review some recent results on nonlocal interaction problems. The focus is on interaction kernels that are anisotropic variants of the classical Coulomb kernel. In other words, while preserving the same singularity at zero of the Coulomb kernel, they present preferred directions of interaction. For kernels of this kind and general confinement we will prove existence and uniqueness of minimizers of the corresponding energy. In the case of a quadratic confinement we will review a recent result by Carrillo and Shu about the explicit characterization of minimizers, and present a new proof, which has the advantage of being extendable to higher dimensions. In light of this result, we will re-examine some previous works motivated by applications to dislocation theory in materials science. Finally, we will discuss some related results and open questions.

In this article, we obtain transformation formulas analogous to the identity of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood in the setting of primitive Maass cusp form over the congruence subgroup $\Gamma _0(N)$ and also provide an equivalent criterion of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function associated with the primitive Maass cusp form over $\Gamma _0(N)$.

For a large class of functions f, we consider the nonlinear biharmonic eigenvalue problem We describe the behaviour of the branch of solutions emanating from an eigenvalue of odd multiplicity below the essential spectrum of the linearized problem. The discussion is based on the degree theory for C2 proper Fredholm maps developed by Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier.

We study $L^p$-Sobolev regularity estimates for the restricted X-ray transforms generated by nondegenerate curves. Making use of the inductive strategy in the recent work by the authors, we establish the sharp $L^p$-regularity estimates for the restricted X-ray transforms in $\mathbb {R}^{d+1}$, $d\ge 3$. This extends the result due to Pramanik and Seeger in $\mathbb {R}^3$.

In this paper, we study intersection configurations – which describe the behaviour of multiple (finite) intersections of subgroups with respect to finite generability – in the realm of free and free times free-abelian (FTFA) groups. We say that a configuration is realizable in a group $G$ if there exist subgroups $H_1,\ldots, H_k \leqslant G$ realizing it. It is well known that free groups ${\mathbb {F}_{n}}$ satisfy the Howson property: the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups is again finitely generated. We show that the Howson property is indeed the only obstruction for multiple intersection configurations to be realizable within nonabelian free groups. On the contrary, FTFA groups ${\mathbb {F}_{n}} \times \mathbb {Z}^m$ are well known to be non-Howson. We also study multiple intersections within FTFA groups, providing an algorithm to decide, given $k\geq 2$ finitely generated subgroups, whether their intersection is again finitely generated and, in the affirmative case, compute a ‘basis’ for it. We finally prove that any intersection configuration is realizable in an FTFA group ${\mathbb {F}_{n}} \times \mathbb {Z}^m$, for $n\geq 2$ and large enough $m$. As a consequence, we exhibit finitely presented groups where every intersection configuration is realizable.

We study stationary solutions to the Keller–Segel equation on curved planes. We prove the necessity of the mass being $8 \pi$ and a sharp decay bound. Notably, our results do not require the solutions to have a finite second moment, and thus are novel already in the flat case. Furthermore, we provide a correspondence between stationary solutions to the static Keller–Segel equation on curved planes and positively curved Riemannian metrics on the sphere. We use this duality to show the nonexistence of solutions in certain situations. In particular, we show the existence of metrics, arbitrarily close to the flat one on the plane, that do not support stationary solutions to the static Keller–Segel equation (with any mass). Finally, as a complementary result, we prove a curved version of the logarithmic Hardy–Littlewood–Sobolev inequality and use it to show that the Keller–Segel free energy is bounded from below exactly when the mass is $8 \pi$, even in the curved case.
