For linear differential systems, the Sacker–Sell spectrum (dichotomy spectrum) and the contractible set are the same. However, we claim that this is not true for the linear difference equations. A counterexample is given. For the convenience of research, we study the relations between the dichotomy spectrum and the contractible set under the framework on time scales. In fact, by a counterexample, we show that the contractible set could be different from dichotomy spectrum on time scales established by Siegmund [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 2002]. Furthermore, we find that there is no bijection between them. In particular, for the linear difference equations, the contractible set is not equal to the dichotomy spectrum. To counter this mismatch, we propose a new notion called generalized contractible set and we prove that the generalized contractible set is exactly the dichotomy spectrum. Our approach is based on roughness theory and Perron's transformation. In this paper, a new method for roughness theory on time scales is provided. Moreover, we provide a time-scaled version of the Perron's transformation. However, the standard argument is invalid for Perron's transformation. Thus, some novel techniques should be employed to deal with this problem. Finally, an example is given to verify the theoretical results.

1. 1. An n : l is defined as a group of n particles which can be contained within a seeker length l moving around a closed line of length L on which N particles are distributed at random. An expression has been obtained for the average number of distinct n : l's per closed line.

2. 2. An expression has also been derived for the average numbers of n : l's in the corresponding problem where the line of length L containing the N particles is open and not closed.

3. 3. Analogous problems in two dimensions are considered, in which the particles are arranged at random on a plane and the place of the seeker line is taken by an orientated rectangle. Exact expressions are given for the desired averages.

4. 4. The extension of the methods used to analogous problems in three dimensions is discussed. Exact expressions have not been obtained, but approximations are given which hold when n is much greater or much smaller than x, the average number found within the seeker area.

The question of the existence of true transition resistance at the surface of certain electrodes in given liquids has been in debate for many years, but has never yet been conclusively settled. It is admitted universally that in certain cases such resistance does occur, as, e.g., when a non-conducting oxide is formed on the surface of the metal; but the point in dispute is whether or not it occurs when no direct chemical action takes place between the metal and the products of electrolysis, or between it and substances dissolved in the liquid.

We are concerned with an elliptic problem which describes a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. In the first part of the paper, we describe the blow-up picture and highlight the differences from the standard mean field equation as we observe non-quantization phenomenon. In the second part, we discuss the Moser–Trudinger inequality in terms of the blow-up masses and get the existence of solutions in a non-coercive regime by means of a variational argument, which is based on some improved Moser–Trudinger inequalities.

When a liquid fills the semi-infinite space between two concentric cylinders which rotate at different steady speeds, how about the shape of the free surface on top of the fluid? The different fluids will lead to a different shape. For the Newtonian fluid, the meniscus descends due to the centrifugal forces. However, for the certain non-Newtonian fluid, the meniscus climbs the internal cylinder. We want to explain the above phenomenon by a rigorous mathematical analysis theory. In the present paper, as the first step, we focus on the Newtonian fluid. This is a steady free boundary problem. We aim to establish the well-posedness of this problem. Furthermore, we prove the convergence of the formal perturbation series obtained by Joseph and Fosdick in Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 49 (1973), 321–380.

The main objective of this paper is to answer the questions posed by Robinson and Sadowski [22, p. 505, Commun. Math. Phys., 2010] for the Navier–Stokes equations. Firstly, we prove that the upper box dimension of the potential singular points set $\mathcal {S}$ of suitable weak solution $u$ belonging to $L^{q}(0,T;L^{p}(\mathbb {R}^{3}))$ for $1\leq \frac {2}{q}+\frac {3}{p}\leq \frac 32$ with $2\leq q<\infty$ and $2< p<\infty$ is at most $\max \{p,q\}(\frac {2}{q}+\frac {3}{p}-1)$ in this system. Secondly, it is shown that $1-2s$ dimension Hausdorff measure of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions satisfying $u\in L^{2}(0,T;\dot {H}^{s+1}(\mathbb {R}^{3}))$ for $0\leq s\leq \frac 12$ is zero, whose proof relies on Caffarelli–Silvestre's extension. Inspired by Barker–Wang's recent work [1], this further allows us to discuss the Hausdorff dimension of potential singular points set of suitable weak solutions if the gradient of the velocity is under some supercritical regularity.

In this work, we present an alternative approach to obtain a solenoidal Lipschitz truncation result in the spirit of D. Breit, L. Diening and M. Fuchs [Solenoidal Lipschitz truncation and applications in fluid mechanics. J. Differ. Equ. 253 (2012), 1910–1942.]. More precisely, the goal of the truncation is to modify a function $u \in W^{1,p}(\mathbb {R}^N;\mathbb {R}^N)$ that satisfies the additional constraint $\operatorname {div} u=0$, such that its modification $\tilde {u}$ is Lipschitz continuous and divergence-free. This approach is different to the approaches outlined in the aforementioned work and D. Breit, L. Diening and S. Schwarzacher [Solenoidal Lipschitz truncation for parabolic PDEs. Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2013), 2671–2700, Section 4] and is able to obtain the rather strong bound on the difference between $u$ and $\tilde {u}$ from the former article. Finally, we outline how the approach pursued in this work may be generalized to closed differential forms.

Under suitable assumptions on the family of anisotropies, we prove the existence of a weak global 1/(n+1)-Hölder continuous in time mean curvature flow with mobilities of a bounded anisotropic partition in any dimension using the method of minimizing movements. The result is extended to the case when suitable driving forces are present. We improve the Hölder exponent to 1/2 in the case of partitions with the same anisotropy and the same mobility and provide a weak comparison result in this setting for a weak anisotropic mean curvature flow of a partition and an anisotropic mean curvature two-phase flow.

This paper obtains new characterizations of weighted Hardy spaces and certain weighted $BMO$ type spaces via the boundedness of variation operators associated with approximate identities and their commutators, respectively.

The rigorous derivation of linear elasticity from finite elasticity by means of $\Gamma$-convergence is a well-known result, which has been extended to different models also beyond the elastic regime. However, in these results the applied forces are usually assumed to be dead loads, that is, their density in the reference configuration is independent of the actual deformation. In this paper we begin a study of the variational derivation of linear elasticity in the presence of live loads. We consider a pure traction problem for a nonlinearly elastic body subject to a pressure live load and we compute its linearization for small pressure by $\Gamma$-convergence. We allow for a weakly coercive elastic energy density and we prove strong convergence of minimizers.

Almost-everywhere convergence of wavelet transforms of Lp-functions under minimal conditions on wavelets was proved by Rao et al. in 1994. However, results on convergence almost everywhere do not provide any information regarding the exceptional set (of Lebesgue measure zero), where convergence does not hold. We prove that if a wavelet ψ satisfies a single additional condition xψ(x) ∈ L1 (R), then, instead of almost-everywhere convergence, we have a more sophisticated result, i.e. convergence of wavelet transforms everywhere on the entire Lebesgue set of Lp-functions. For example, wavelets with compact support, used frequently in applications, obviously satisfy this extra condition. Moreover, we prove that our conditions on wavelets ensure the Riemann localization principle in L1 for the wavelet transforms.

Polynomial vector fields which admit a prescribed Darboux integrating factor are quite well understood when the geometry of the underlying curve is non-degenerate. In the general setting, morphisms of the affine plane may remove degeneracies of the curve, and thus allow more structural insight. In the present paper we establish some properties of integrating factors subjected to morphisms, and we discuss in detail one particular class of morphisms related to finite reflection groups. The results indicate that degeneracies for the underlying curve generally impose additional restrictions on vector fields admitting a given integrating factor.

In 1877, shortly after the disastrous colliery explosion in the Blantyre pit, in which hundreds of lives were lost, Mr James Young, F.R.S., of Kelly, described to me an instrument which he had thought of for determining what is the amount of fire-damp in any part of a mine. This was the first thing which directed my attention to the subject, and I very soon saw that there was a principle in acoustics which might be most admirably adapted to the end in view, viz., to determine the quantity of fire-damp (or marsh gas) by the diminution in density of the mixed air and gas (for marsh gas is only about half the density of air). Mr Young and myself tested the principle the next day, and found it to be one of extreme delicacy.

Upper and lower bounds for the solutions of a nonlinear Dirichlet problem are given and isoperimetric inequalities for the maximal pressure of an ideal charged gas are constructed. The method used here is based on a geometrical result for two-dimensional abstract surfaces.

The investigation was at first undertaken with a view of determining how the blue colour of the water of the Mediterranean is produced, and of finding the explanation of the different colour phenomena seen in that sea. The investigation was afterwards extended to other waters.

The experiments were made with a special view of determining whether the selective reflection or the selective absorption theory gave the correct explanation of the blueness seen in water.

Given a regular two-dimensional local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m}_R)$ and a complete $\mathfrak{m}_{R}$-primary ideal $I\subset R$, we describe the (Zariski) factorization of the complete $\mathfrak{m}_{R}$-primary ideals $J\subset I$ of codimension $1$ in terms of the factorization of $I$.
