Les problèmes de la gnose et de la connaissance dans le christianisme naissant restent fort obscurs. Les écrits de Qumrân ont paru y apporter quelque éclaircissement.1 Toute lumiére, si ténue soit-elle, projetée sur ce domaine capital, semble bienvenue. Ces pages voudraient y contribuer sur un point précis et établir une comparaison entre Qumrân, les écrits pauliniens et l'épître aux Hébreux.

New Testament theology is admittedly the most important and the most difficult of New Testament studies. All our other disciplines—textual criticism, the study of the grammar, idiom and vocabulary of Hellenistic Greek, the examination of the literary and historical problems which the literature of the New Testament presents—all derive their interest from their bearing on New Testament theology.

Die formgeschichtliche Arbeit an den Evangeien hat zur analytischen Auflösung des Evangelienrahmens und zur Erfassung der dem Evangeium vorgelagerten Überlieferungseinheiten geführt.

New Testament manuscripts have been grouped by scholars into ‘Texts’ like Hort's Neutral, Western, Alexandrian, and Syrian. They have been grouped in ‘Families’ like Family I and Family Π, and into ‘Text-types’ and subgroups of types—as in the work of von Soden. The question as to the significance of these groupings of New Testament manuscripts can be answered by taking either of two sharply opposed positions. The first regards these groupings as of paramount importance; the second sees no importance in them. Both these positions have been taken by a number of scholars in modern study of New Testament manuscripts. A third mediating position is possible, and it is the purpose of this paper to urge that it be taken and to point out its implications for specific procedures in future study of New Testament manuscripts.

Stephen's speech undoubtedly stands apart among the speeches found in the Acts of the Apostles.1 The two main problems which have to be solved are: (i) its meaning and (2) its origin and background.

(i) With regard to its meaning two ideas are to be noticed. Some scholars consider this speech in the first place as an attack on the Jerusalem temple and its cult.2 On the other hand others consider it as an effort to show the Jews that they are always rebelling against God's will.3

I have called this an essay in detection. That means it is a tale of some mystery and still more imagination. It must be left to the reader to decide whether it should properly be classed as detective fiction.

A study of the relationship between faith and reason in Paul's theology, such as we are now going to undertake, would seem to be a particularly fruitless investigation. We all know from the opening chapters of I Corinthians that the apostle, as a preacher of the message of the cross, fought just as bitterly against the wisdom of this world as against the attempt to achieve righteousness through works. The wisdom of this world and the righteousness based on works are both characteristic of the man who is seeking to assert himself before God and whose attempt miscarries. Just as Christ is the end of the law, it must apply in the same sense that he is the end of the wisdom of this world. God has destroyed it through the cross (I Cor. i. 18ff.). From now on the words ‘He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord’ hold good both for Jews and Greeks alike (I Cor. i. 31). One cannot seriously discount the significance of these passages by saying they contain nothing but exaggerated and casual utterances. Paul has expressed himself here in fundamental, comprehensive and consciously offensive terms, in order to demonstrate the contrast between the news of the Crucified, a σkáνδαλoν for the Jews and a μωία for the Greeks, and the wisdom of the world, which is foolishness in God's eyes. These words of the apostle have in fact given offence again and again. Since the days of Celsus and Porphyrius they have aroused the indignant protests of the opponents of Christianity. Goethe voiced them quite openly, ‘Living till seventy wouldn't be worth the trouble, if all the wisdom of the world were folly in the sight of God’ (Max. und Reflex. 2). We must certainly not forget that in I Cor. i–iii the apostle is speaking about the wisdom of the world and not directly about reason itself. But this distinction does not seem to help us much. The trenchant answer which Paul gives his opponents who contest his claim to be a true apostle and man of the Spirit forces us to ask whether he leaves man's reason any place at all: ‘Yes, we certainly walk in the flesh (έν σαρkί) but we do not wage our war in the manner of the flesh (kατα σαρkα)—for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God for the destruction of strongholds—as we destroy sophistries (λoγiσμoúς) and all arrogance, which exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring every thought (νóημα) into captivity under the obedience of Christ’ (II Cor. x. 3–5).

La section proprement prophétique de l' Apocalypse johannique (iv–xxii) se divise nettement en deux grandes parties. La seconde partie (xii–xxii) est née d'une situation concrète que l'on parvient assez aisément à reconstituer: le point de départ en est la persécution dirigée contre les chrétiens par le pouvoir impérial.

Im Mittelpunkt christlicher Verkündigung steht die ‘frohe Botschaft’ als ein unteilbares Ganzes. Dieser Feststellung widerspricht nicht die Tatsache, daß das Evangelium selbst in vierfacher Gestalt kanonisiert wurde. Mag es sich um kirchlicherseits anerkannte Schriften oder um die sogenannten Apokryphen handeln, sie alle entstammten der gleichen Wurzel und dienten dem gleichen gleichen Ziele. Die Foige war, daß die Gestalt des Meisters von alien Seiten angestrahit und verherrlicht wurde. Damit wuchs ihre Majestät ins Unermeßliche und drohte das einheitliche Bild und den geschichtlichen Urgrund zu verlieren. Besinnung auf das Echte und Wesentliche tat not, besonders als die ersten Angriffe von außen gegen die neue Religion einsetzten. So entstand die Apologetik, die dem Wesen christlicher Lehre fernliegt. Viele Fronten der Abwehr taten sich auf. Einer wurde der Auftrag zuteil, das eigenwillige und mit der Hauptüberlieferung wenig verträgiiche Johannesevangelium um seiner Wunder und seines inneren Gehaites willen in Obhut zu nehrnen und gegen die Umwelt zu verteidigen. Also ‘haben die aitchristlichen Schriftsteller die These aufgesteilt, daß der vierte Evangelist die Synoptiker sowohl nach der stofflichen ais auch der theologischen Seite habe erganzen wollen…. Ihre Krönung haben diese Bemühungen in der Schrift des hl. Augustinus “Dc consensu evangelistarum” gefunden, die im ganzen Mitteiaiter eine starke Wirkung ausgeübt hat.’1

In a previous number of New Testament Studies (II(1957), 115–27), I argued that behind Ephesians i. 3–14 and I Peter i. 3–12 lie forms of liturgical prayer; that Ephesians as a whole might well be a Baptismal Encyclical; and that if this were so, the question of the priority of Colossians might have to be reconisdered.

War einmal em Evangelium geschrieben, so konnte es aus verschiedenen Gründen zur gelegentlichen Wiederholung des Entwurfes und damit zur Gattung der Evangelien kommen. Die galiläische Homologie, die Marc. vermutlich seinem Werke zugrunde gelegt hatte, war vielleicht in anderen Teilen der ersten christlichen Gemeinde weniger anerkannt. Jedenfalls führt Matt. die Worte wider Chorazin, Bethsaida und Kapernaum mit sich, die sich gegen das galiläische Zentrum richten: ‘Da begann er zu fluchen über die Städte, in denen seine meisten Krafttaten geschehen waren, weil sie nicht Buße taten’ xi. (20ff. par.). Sicherlich unterlag die Homologie auch einer fortschreitenden Vertiefung vornehmlich der Aussagen, die von der Ankunft und Erhöhung des Kyrios handein, vgl. bei Matt. die stärkere Betonung der Vorgeschichten (1. Evangelienteil) und den Missiónsbefehl. Die Stoffauswahl des Marc. mochte größere Lücken aufweisen, wollte man auf die andernorts entstandenen bzw. gesammehen Überlieferungen nicht einfach verzichten. Bei Matt. hat das Anliegen, die bekannten Traditionen vollzähliger zu sammeln, zur Zusammenstellung von zehn Wundertraditionen (Kap. 8f.), sieben Gleichnissen über die Kirche (Kap. 13) und sieben Endgleichnissen (Kap. 24f.), aber auch sonst zu vielen Erweiterungen über den ganzen Stoff hin geführt. Wer mit einer lebendig wachsenden katechetischen Überlieferung rechnet, auf weiche das Systematisieren direkt hinweisen dürfte, wird dies und die weitgehende Übereinstimmung zwischen Matt. und Luc. bei vielen dieser zugefügten Traditionen sogar ohne die Annahme einer ‘Logienquelle Q’ verständlich finden, obgleich das Problem damit noch nicht gelöst ist. Mit dem wachsenden Weitblick der Lehrer auf Grund der Missionserfolge, aber ebenso durch den Verlust der ParusieNaherwartung mag auch der Stoff angewachsen sein.

Die Perikope von der Ehebrecherin Joh. vii. 53viii. II gehört zwar nicht zum ursprünglichen Bestand des vierten Evangeliums, beruht aber auf alter Überlieferung, so daβ viele Exegeten nicht zögern, sie für geschichtlich glaubwürdig zu halten. Aber selbst wenn die Geschichte erfunden sein sollte, dürfte man auf Grund ihres hohen Alters und ihrer vermutlichen Entstehung in Palästina annehmen, daβ sie in ihren zeitgeschichtlichen Angaben oder Andeutungen die wirklichen Verhältnisse von damals widerspiegelt. Der Abschnitt hat denn auch mehrfach die Aufmerksamkeit derer gefunden, die sich mit den Rechtsverhältnissen Judäas zur Zeit Jesu beschäftigt haben. Über eine der rechtsgeschichtlichen Fragen, die durch die Perikope aufgeworfen werden, sind sich die Ausleger bis heute noch nicht einig: Weiche Strafe war damals auf Ehebruch einer verheirateten Frau gesetzt? Die Frage kann auch so gesteilt werden: Handelt es sich bei der Ehebrecherin unserer Erzählung urn eine Verlobte oder eine Verheiratete? Es scheint, daß das zur Verfügung stehende Quellenmaterial darauf eine hinreichend gesicherte Antwort zu geben erlaubt.

The Qumrân texts have brought to light a feature of Jewish thought about angels which helps us to interpret the meaning of the phrase διά τούς άγγΈλους in I Cor. xi. 10. This phrase has been the subject of many interpretations from the time of Tertullian on. The evidence from Qumrân, however, does not just add another interpretation to the many that have already been given; rather it adds a detail to one interpretation already rather common, thus supporting it and rendering the other interpretations less probable. It is our purpose in this study to indicate the bearing of the new evidence from Qumrân on this Pauline expression.

The purpose of this note is to suggest that a consideration too often forgotten in discussions of the post-resurrection appearances is that of the normal movements of pilgrims to and from the Jerusalem festivals. It is sometimes assumed that the tradition of the disciples' return to Galilee. requires explanation, either in terms of their cowardice (a suggestion justly dismissed as a mere legend of the critics) or in the light of a dominical command. Or again, if the tradition of a journey to Galilee (however explained) is accepted as substantially right, then, by the same token, some special explanation is sought for the Lucan description of the corporate life of the Church as begining in Jerusalem.
