Many Banach algebras A have the property that, although there are discontinuous homomorphisms from A into other Banach algebras, every homomorphism from A into another Banach algebra is automatically continuous on a dense subspace—preferably, a subalgebra—of A. Examples of such algebras are C*-algebras and the group algebras L1(G), where G is a locally compact, abelian group. In this paper, we prove analogous results for , where E is a Banach space, and . An important rôle is played by the second Hochschild cohomology group of and , respectively, with coefficients in the one-dimensional annihilator module. It vanishes in the first case and has linear dimension one in the second one.

In this paper we prove a number of results on Cauchy transforms of generalized type given by Borel measures supported on the class of analytic functions mapping the unit disc into the unit disk. We also give a BMOA characterization using these families.

We prove Hahn-Banach type theorems for linear functionals with values in R∪{+∞} on ordered cones, Using the concept of locally convex cones, we provide a sandwich theorem involving sub- and superlinear functionals which are allowed to attain infinite values. It render general versions of well-known extension and separation results. We describe the range of all linear functionals sandwiched between given sub- and superlinear functionals on an ordered cone. The results are of interest even in vector spaces, since we consider sublinear functionals that may attain the value +∞.

Let be the classical system of the Walsh functions, the multiplicative semigroup of the functions represented by series of functions Wk(t)with non-negative coefficients which sum equals 1. We study the arithmetic of . The analogues of the well-known [ related to the arithmetic of the convolution semigroup of probability measures on the real line are valid in . The classes of idempotent elements, of infinitely divisible elements, of elements without indecomposable factors, and of elements without indecomposable and non-degenerate idempotent factors are completely described. We study also the class of indecomposable elements. Our method is based on the following fact: is isomorphic to the semigroup of probability measures on the groups of characters of the Cantor-Walsh group.

It is determined when there exists a minimal essential ideal, or minimal essential left ideal, in the incidence algebra of a locally finite partially ordered set defined over a commutative ring. When such an ideal exists, it is described.

The main result indicates that every finitely generated, residually finite, torsion-free, cohopfian group having on free Abelian subgroup of rank two is hyperhopfian. The argument relies on earlier work and ideas of Hirshon. As a corollary, fundamental groups of all closed hyperbolic manifolds are hyperhopfian.

We study an important subclass of quasicircles, namely, symmetric quasicircles. Several characterizations for quasicircles, such as the reverse triangle inequality, the M -condition and the quasiconformal extension property, have been extended to symmetric quasicircles by Becker and Pommerenke and by Gardiner and Sullivan. In this paper we establish several relations among various domain constants such as quasiextremal distance constants, (local) reflection constants and (local) extension constants for this class. We also give several characterizations for symmetric quasicircles such as the strong quadrilateral inequality and the strong extremal distance property. They correspond to the quadrilateral inequality and the extremal distance property for quasicircles.

We show that every σ-complete MV-algebra is an MV-σ-homomorphic image of some σ-complete MV- algebra of fuzzy sets, called a tribe, which is a system of fuzzy sets of a crisp set Ω containing 1Ω and closed under fuzzy complementation and formation of min {∑nfn, 1}. Since a tribe is a direct generalization of a σ-algebra of crisp subsets, the representation theorem is an analogue of the Loomis-Sikorski theorem for MV-algebras. In addition, this result will be extended also for Dedekind σ-complete ℓ-groups with strong unit.

It is conjectured that a hyperbolic knot complement does not contain a closed embedded totally geodesic surface. In this paper, we show that there are no such surfaces in the complements of hyperbolic 3-bridge knots and double torus knots. Some topological criteria for a closed essential surface failing to be totally geodesic are given. Roughly speaking, sufficiently ‘complicated’ surfaces cannot be totally geodesic.

We prove that a compact orientable Einstein-Thorpe manifold of dimension 8 that satisfies 6X = |P2| must be flat.

Let V be a finite dimensional Hermitian vector space and K be a compact Lie subgroup of U(V) for which th representation of K on C[V] is multiplicity free. One obtains a canonical basis {pα} for the space C [VR]k of K-invariant polynomials on VR and also a basis {q's. The polynomial pα's yields the homogeneous component of highest degree in qα. The coefficient that express the qα's in terms of the pβ's are the generalized binomial coeffficients of Yan. The main result in this paper shows tht these numbers are rational.

Global weak continuity of M-functionals in a neighbourhood of the parametric distribution is established. This has implications for robustness of M-estimators vis a vis definitions put forward by Hampel. For instance the Tukey bisquare location estimator is robust on neighbourhoods of the parametric model, but the median is not.
