Chains of projectivities within the lattice (G) of subnormal subgroups of group G have been considered by various authors, see for example Barnes [1] and Tamaschke [2].

Let f(x) and g(x) be two polynomials with arbitrary complex coefficients that are relatively prime. Hence the maximum is positive for all complex x. Since m(x) is continuous and tends to infinity with |x|, the quantity E(f, g) = min m(x) is therefore also positive.

The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the categories of the minimal topological spaces investigated in [1], [2], [7], and [8]. After these results are given, an application will be made to answer the following question: If is the lattice of topologies on a set X and is a Hausdorff (or regular, or completely regular, or normal, or locally compact) topology does there always exist a minimal Hausdorff (or minimal regular, or minimal completely regular, or minimal normal, or minimal locally compact) topology weaker than ?

An (explicit) Runge-Kutta process is a means of numerically solving the differential equation , at the point x = x0+h, where y, f may be vectors.

A generalised factorial function (z: k)! is defined as an infinite product similar to the Euler product for z!, but with the sequences of integers replaced by the roots of F(z) = sin πz+kπz. It is proved that, apart from poles in (z) < 0, (z: k)! is analytic in both variables, and that F(z) may be expressed in the form F(z) = πz/(z: k)!(—z: k)!

The object of this paper is to consider the existence of the double-six over GF(2n) and particularly over GF(4).

By an ∮-related family ∮ we mean a non-empty family ∮ of elements such that to each element F ∈ ∮ is associated a set R(F) of elements of ∮, called the R-class of F, which contains F. An element G ∈ R(F) is said to be R-related to F. By an R-section S of ∮ we mean a set of elements of ∮ such that for any elements F1, F2 of S either F1 ∈ R(F2) or F2 ∈R(F1). If R(F) = {F} for each F ∈ ∮ then the only R-Sections are the sets {F}. The interesting applications of the lemma proved below are to those cases when there exist R-sections which do not contain a finite number of elements.

In connection with Relativity, Kottler [2] introduced the space V4 whose metric tensor is given by xi being space coordinates and Ф being a function of x1 only, and showed that if Where a and b are arbitrary constants, then the V4 is an Einstein space.

The generalised factorial function (z; K)! has been defined by Smith White and Buchwald [1] in terms of an infinite product which converges very slowly, about 105 terms being required for four figure accuracy if |z| = 10. A method is given for the computation of (z; k)! for 0 < |z|≦ 10 to four figure accuracy.

If the finite group G has a 2-Sylow subgroup S of order 2a+1, containing a cyclic subgroup of index 2, then in general S may be one of the following six types [8]:

(i) cyclic; (ii) Abelian of type (a, 1), a > 1; (iii) dihedral1; (iv) generalized quaternion; (v) {α, β}, α2a = β2, α2a−1+1, a ≧ 3;

(vi) {α, β}, α2a = β2, α2a−1+1, a ≧ 3.

In a paper of nearly thirty years ago (Mahler 1937) I first studied approximation properties of algebraic number fields relative to their full system of inequivalent valuations. I now return to these questions with a slightly improved method and establish a number of existence theorems for such fields.

Let Xi, i = 1, 2, 3,··· be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables and write Sn = X1+X2+…+Xn. If the mean of Xi is finite and positive, we have Pr(Sn ≦ x) → 0 as n → ∞ for all x1 – ∞ < x < ∞ using the weak law of large numbers. It is our purpose in this paper to study the rate of convergence of Pr(Sn ≦ x) to zero. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the convergence of the two series where k is a non-negative integer, and where r > 0. These conditions are applied to some first passage problems for sums of random variables. The former is also used in correcting a queueing Theorem of Finch [4].

Let G be a finite group all of whose proper subgroups are nilpotent. Then by a theorem of Schmidt-Iwasawa the group G is soluble. But what can we say about a finite group G is only one maximal subgroup is nilpotent? Let G be a finite group with a nilpotent maximal subgroup M.

Although many varied techniques have been proposed for handling deterministic non-linear programming problems there apperars to have been little success in solving the more realistic problem of stochastic non-linear programming, despite the many results that have been obtained for stochastic linear programming. In this paper the stochastic non-linear problem is treated by means of an adaptation of a method used by Berkovitz [1] in obtaining an exiatence theorem for a type of inequality constrained variational problem involving one independent variable. The stochastic programming problem of course involves many independent variables. Necessary conditions are obtained for the existence of a solution of a fairly general type of non-linear problem, and these conditions are shown to be also sufficient for the convex problem. A duality theorem is given for the latter problem.

This paper deals with a type of Remannian space Vn (n ≧ 2) for which the first covariant dervative of Weyl's projective curvature tensor is everywhere zero, that is where comma denotes covariant differentiation with respect to the metric tensor gij of Vn. Such a space has been called a projective-symmetric space by Gy. Soós [1]. We shall denote such an n-space by ψn. It will be proved in this paper that decomposable Projective-Symmetric spaces are symmetric in the sense of Cartan. In sections 3, 4 and 5 non-decomposable spaces of this kind will be considered in relation to other well-known classes of Riemannian spaces defined by curvature restrictions. In the last section the question of the existence of fields of concurrent directions in a ψ will be discussed.

Let X1, X2,…Xn, … be independent and identically distributed random variables, and write . In [2] Chung and Fuchs have established necessary and sufficient conditions for the random walk {Zn} to be recurrent, i.e. for Zn to return infinitely often to every neighbourhood of the origin. The object of this paper is to obtain similar results for the corresponding process in continuous time.

The definitions of the functions used to described Doppler broadened Breit Wigner contours are extended to the complex domain. The properties of the analytic functions are then used to evaluate a number of integrals by the theory of residues.

The 3-metabelian groups are those groups in which every subgroup generated by three elements is metabelian. In [2] it was stated and it [3] it was proved that the variety of such groups may be defined by the one law (by [a, b, c, d] we mean [[a, b], [c, d]], and for other definitions and notation we refer to [1]). Recently Bachmuth and Lewin obtained in [1] the surprising and remarkable result that the same variety is defined by the law Now (2) is reminiscent of the relation which holds in all groups and which is apparently due to Philip Hall. Using the identities , etc., we find that (2) is equivalent to where u = [z, x, y] and v = [y, z, z] [z, x, y]. Note that apart from certain displeasing conjugates (4) is curiously similar to both (1) and (2).
