This paper answers a recent question concerning the relationship between two notions of paracompactness for bitopological spaces. Romaguera and Marin defined pairwise paracompactness in terms of pair open covers, motivated by a characterization of paracompactness due to Junnila. On the other hand, Raghavan and Reilly defined a bitopological space (X, τ, σ) to be δ-pairwise paracompact if and only if every τ open (σ open) cover of X admits a τ V σ open refinement which is τ V σ locally finite. It is shown that pairwise paracompactness implies δ-pairwise paracompactness, and that the converse is false.

Bo Ju Jiang introduced an invariant lying in the braid group which is the best lower bound of the number of fixed points in a homotopy class of a given pair of self maps of a surface. Here we modify this construction to get a lower bound of the number of coincidence points of a pair of maps between two closed surfaces.

The Bernstein-von Mises theorem, concerning the convergence of suitably normalized and centred posterior density to normal density, is proved for a certain class of linearly parametrized parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) as the number of Fourier coefficients in the expansion of the solution increases to infinity. As a consequence, the Bayes estimators of the drift parameter, for smooth loss functions and priors, are shown to be strongly consistent, asymptotically normal and locally asymptotically minimax (in the Hajek-Le Cam sense), and asymptotically equivalent to the maximum likelihood estimator as the number of Fourier coefficients become large. Unlike in the classical finite dimensional SDEs, here the total observation time and the intensity of noise remain fixed.

An infinite family of 2-groups is produced. These groups have no direct factors and have a non-abelian automorphism group in which all automorphisms are central.

Suppose that A = [αnk], (n, k = 0, 1, 2, …), is an indinite matrix with complex entries. A transforms a complex sequence a = {an to a complex sequence {bn = b = Aa where assuming that the series in (1) converges. Each sequence a = {an is uniquely associated with a power series In this way the matrix A transforms a power series into a power series. Specifically, the power series (2) is mapped to the power series where the bn's are given by (1). We are only interested in matrices having the property that each power series analytic in Δ = {z: |z| < 1} maps to a power series analytic in Δ.

Let X be any Tychonoff space and βX the Stone—Čech compactification of X. Let F(βX) be the Graev free group of βX and let be the subspace topology on the Graev group F(X). Our results demonstrate that this topology is useful and behaves extremely well; the behavior of the free topology still remains enigmatic.

There are various applications, some of which clarify the free topology on F(X), while others improve various results recently published.

We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the multiplier representations of a discrete group to be type I. This result extends the corresponding result for ordinary representation given by Kaniuth in [4].

Smith [6, Theorem 2.18] proved that if A is a ring which has a right artinian right quotient ring and G is a poly- (cyclic-or-finite) group, then the group ring AG has a right artinian right quotient ring. We give here a different proof (and a generalization) of this result using methods developed by Jategaonkar [3,4]. THEOREM. Let A be a ring which has a right artinian right quotient ring, and let G be a group which has a (transfinite) ascending normal series with each factor either finite or cyclic, but only a finite number of finite factors. Then AG has a right artinian right quotient ring.

In this paper, we study the set of rational μ in (−2, 2) for which the group Gu generated by is not free by using quadratic Diophantine equations of the form ax2 −by2 = ±1. We give a new set of accumulation points for rational values of μ in (−2, 2) for which Gμ is not free, thereby extending the results of Beardon where he showed that are accumulation points, where N is an integer which is not a perfect square. In particular, we exhibit an infinite set of accumulation points for μ between 1 and 2 including the point 1.

Although many varied techniques have been proposed for handling deterministic non-linear programming problems there apperars to have been little success in solving the more realistic problem of stochastic non-linear programming, despite the many results that have been obtained for stochastic linear programming. In this paper the stochastic non-linear problem is treated by means of an adaptation of a method used by Berkovitz [1] in obtaining an exiatence theorem for a type of inequality constrained variational problem involving one independent variable. The stochastic programming problem of course involves many independent variables. Necessary conditions are obtained for the existence of a solution of a fairly general type of non-linear problem, and these conditions are shown to be also sufficient for the convex problem. A duality theorem is given for the latter problem.

In this paper we find an expression for ex as the limit of quotients associated with a sequence of matrices, and thence, by using the matrix approach to continued fractions ([5] 12–13, [2] and [4]), we derive the regular continued fraction expansions of e2/k and tan 1/k (where k is a positive integer).

Ott, Tomforde and Willis proposed a useful compactification for one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets. Building from their idea, we develop a notion of two-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets, with an eye towards generalizing a result of Kitchens. As with the one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets, our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces but, in contrast to the one-sided setting, our shift map is continuous everywhere. We show that many of the classical results from symbolic dynamics are still true for our two-sided shift spaces. In particular, while for one-sided shifts the problem about whether or not any $M$-step shift is conjugate to an edge shift space is open, for two-sided shifts we can give a positive answer for this question.

Let ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ be Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights induced by positive Borel measures $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on the open unit disk. Denote by $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ Möbius invariant function spaces generated by ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$. In this paper, we investigate the relation among ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$, $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ and some Möbius invariant function spaces, such as the space $BMOA$ of analytic functions on the open unit disk with boundary values of bounded mean oscillation and the Dirichlet space. Applying the relation between $BMOA$ and $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$, under the assumption that the weight function $K$ is concave, we characterize the function $K$ such that ${\mathcal{Q}}_{K}=BMOA$. We also describe inner functions in $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ spaces.

New existence conditions, under which an index at infinity can be calculated, are given for bifurcations at infinity of asymptotically linear equations in spaces of vector-valued functions. The case where a bounded nonlinearity has discontinuous principal homogeneous part is considered. The results are applied to 2π-periodic problems for two-dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations and to a vector two-point boundary value problem.

We show that monotone σ -complete effect algebras under some conditions are σ - homomorphic images of effect-tribes (as monotone σ -complete effect algebras), which are nonempty systems of fuzzy sets closed under complements, sums of fuzzy sets less than 1, and containing all pointwise limits of nondecreasing fuzzy sets. Because effect-tribes are generalizations of Boolean σ -algebras of subsets, we present a generlization of the Loomis-Sikorski theorem for such effect algebras. We show that we can choose an effect-tribe to be a system of affin fuzzy sets. In addition, we present a new version of the Loomis-Sikorski theorem for σ-complete MV-algebras.

We study some classes of planar harmonic mappings produced with the shear construction devised by Clunie and Sheil-Small in 1984. The first section reviews the basic concepts and describes the shear construction. The main body of the paper deals with the geometry of the classes constructed.

We obtain a maximal transference theorem that relates almost everywhere convergence of multilinear Fourier series to boundedness of maximal multilinear operators. We use this and other recent results on transference and multilinear operators to deduce Lp and almost everywhere summability of certain m–linear Fourier series. We formulate conditions for the convergence of multilinear series and we investigate certain kinds of summation.

A generalized version of the Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz theorem is obtained and used to generalize Ky Fan's minimax principle. This result is applied to a variational inequality.

We give some higher dimensional analogues of the Durfee square formula and point out their relation to dissections of multipartitions. We apply the results to write certain affine Lie algebra characters in terms of Universal Chiral Partition Functions.
