Activated carbon fiber/carbon aerogel (ACF/CA) composites were fabricated by gelling a mixture of ACF and resorcinol and furfural, followed by supercritical drying of the mixture in isopropanol. The product then went through carbonization in a nitrogen atmosphere. The fabrication conditions, such as the mass content of R–F, the content of the ACF added, and the gelation temperature, were explored. The textures and pore structures of the ACF/CA composites thus obtained were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a surface area analyzer. The mechanical properties of the samples were assessed primarily through compressive tests. The experimental results indicated that the added ACF disperses uniformly in the resulting ACF/CA composites. The carbon matrix of the ACF/CA composites also consisted of interconnected carbon nanoparticles with sizes in the range of 20 to 30 nm. The ACFs can reinforce the related carbon aerogels when they originally have low mass density and are weak in mechanical strength. When large amounts of ACF were added to the composites, the micropore area and micropore volume of the composites increased, but their external surface area decreased. The mesopore volumes and the related diameters and mesopore size distributions of the ACF/CA composites were mainly affected by the mass density of the composites. The micropore sizes of all the composites were sharply concentrated at about 0.5 nm.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) films were prepared by a nearby vaporizing chemical vapor deposition method using bis(2,4-pentanedionato)zinc as a source material. The deposition rate increased exponentially from 0.58 to 147 nm min−1 with increasing substrate temperature (Ts). The highest preferred orientation to the c axis was obtained under the conditions that the distance between substrate and source surface was 5.0 mm, and the Ts was 300 °C. When we used a sapphire (0001) substrate, an epitaxial ZnO film could be deposited on this condition.

Surface properties and photocatalytic oxidation reactions on the hollandite-type compound K2Ga2Sn6O16 (KGSO) were examined for photoinduced hydrophilicity and oxidative decomposition of an endocrine-disrupting chemical, pentachlorophenol (C6Cl5OH, PCP), under ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The thin films and mesoporous powders of hollandite were used for examination of surface properties and photocatalysis, respectively. The photoinduced surface property was examined by measurement of the contact angle of water, ortho-chlorophenol (o-C6H4ClOH), and toluene on the surface of KGSO. The contact angle of H2O and o-C6H4ClOH decreased to 0° under UV illumination. The toluene showed little change in contact angle under UV irradiation. It is concluded that the surface of KGSO shows photoinduced hydrophilicity for H2O and aromatic compounds with hydroxyl groups (−OH). In addition, KGSO clearly showed a photo-oxidative decomposition of PCP under weak UV illumination at room temperature. The decomposition speed of C6Cl5OH on KGSO was much faster than that on previous reported nano-sized SnO2 photocatalysts. It is expected that photo-oxidative decomposition of aromatic compound will be controlled by a combination of optimum composition of the hollandite phase and control of the morphology of the hollandite particles. This suggests that hollandite would be a promising photocatalyst for decomposition of aromatic compounds in endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Carbon nitride nanocrystals were synthesized on Co/Ni-covered Si(100) wafers using a nitrogen-atom-beam-assisted pulsed laser ablation deposition method. Transmission electron miscroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy showed that as-deposited films were constructed primarily from nanometer-sized β-C3N4 and CNx crystallites. The co-catalyzation by the cobalt and nickel in the synthesis process is considered to play an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline β-C3N4. The reasons for the formation of carbon nitride nanocrystals were analyzed.

TiO2 nanocrystalline powder was synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method using urea, and its characteristics were investigated through comparison with the powder prepared by conventional precipitation using ammonia. The homogeneously precipitated powder was anatase-type TiO2 with a particle size of 4–5 nm and a uniform spherical particle shape. The fact that the transformation from anatase to rutile was prohibited at elevated temperatures in the homogeneously precipitated powder can be useful to prepare anatase-type TiO2 thin films by calcination at high temperatures. With increasing heat-treatment temperature, the particle size of the homogeneously precipitated powder was smaller than that of the conventionally precipitated powder, and the particle shape was more uniform. The homogeneously precipitated powder showed good photocatalytic activity for Ag ion photoadsorption because the powder had both good crystallinity and a large specific surface area of 280 m2/g.

The microstructure, melting point, and mechanical properties of Sn–8.55Zn–0.45Al–XAg lead-free solders were investigated. The Ag content of the solders investigated was 0–3 wt.%. The results indicate that the AgZn3 and Ag5Zn8 compounds are formed at the addition of Ag to Sn–8.55Zn–0.45Al solders. The adding of Ag also results in the formation of hypoeutectic structure, increasing the melting point of the solders and decreasing the ductility. Results of thermal analysis reveal that the Sn–8.55Zn–0.45Al–XAg solder has eutectic temperature at 198 °C when the addition of Ag is 0.5 wt.%. The eutectic solder exhibits greater tensile strength and higher ductility than the 63–Sn–37Pb solder.

This study presents results of wavelength-dependent Raman scattering from amorphous silicon carbon (a-Si:C:H). The a-Si:C:H films were produced by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Prior results with amorphous carbon indicate that laser excitation selectively probes clusters with differing sizes. Our measurements with a-Si:C:H indicate that when using red (632.8 nm), green (514.5 nm), and blue (488.0 nm) excitation, the Raman D and G peaks shift to higher wave numbers as the excitation energy increases. The higher frequency is associated with smaller clusters that are preferentially excited with higher photon energy. It appears that photoluminescence occurs due to radiative recombination from intracluster transitions in Si-alloyed sp2-bonded carbon clusters

Studies were carried out on the microstructure and thermal stability of an ultrafine Al/Al2O3 composite with high strength and low density. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that Al2O3 shells remained undeformed below 550 °C, which limited grain growth of Al. Both transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis indicated that no obvious grain growth of Al with time occurred upon annealing at 620 °C. After almost all the alumina shells were destroyed following annealing at 620 °C, the Al2O3 fragments with various morphologies distributed in the material could still limit the migration of Al grain boundaries to increase the thermal stability of the material. After Al melted and resolidified, the grain sizes of Al were still about 200 nm. The bulk composite sample showed good dimensional stability. Even if the Al grains melted, the network of Al2O3 fragments kept the sample from deforming due to the wetting of Al2O3 network with liquid Al.

Aluminum and its alloys show poor tribological properties. Oxygen plasma source ion implantation is an emerging technology for the improvement of the surface mechanical properties of these materials. We found an optimum O ion dose, corresponding to 35 at.% O, for which we were able to obtain nanohardness enhancements by factors of 2× and 3× for pure and alloyed (AA7075) Al, respectively. Nanoscratch test results showed reductions in the scratch depths and the friction coefficients by nearly the same factors. It is also important to control the process temperature (∼160 °C). These improvements are due to the formation of a smooth, stiff, but nonbrittle metal–oxide (Al–Al2O3) nanocomposite.

Non-stoichiometric Zr-based alloys were prepared, and the corresponding electrochemical properties were characterized as hydride electrode alloys. The microstructure and chemical composition of non-stoichiometric Zr–Ti–Mn–V–Ni hydride electrode alloys were systematically investigated by x-ray Rietveld refinement, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy under TEM observation. C14, C15 Laves phases and non-Laves phases were identified in Zr1−xTix(MnVNi)2.2 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) alloys. Non-Laves phases in Zr1-xTix(MnVNi)2.2 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) alloys are Ti–Zr–Ni phases related to the TiNi phase with pseudo-body-centered-cubic structure of the CsCl type. The evolution of crystallography and phase constitution for Ti–Zr–Ni non-Laves phases with different alloy composition was systematically studied. The influence of the Ti–Zr–Ni phases on the electrochemical properties of non-stoichiometric Zr1−xTix(MnVNi)2.2 alloys is briefly discussed.

Ab initio calculation was performed to predict the structures, lattice constants, and cohesive energies of metastable Cu75Cr25 and Cu50Cr50 phases. An n-body Cu–Cr potential was derived through fitting to some ab initio calculated results and was capable of reproducing some intrinsic properties of the Cu–Cr system. Based on the derived potential, molecular dynamics simulations predicted that for a Cu100−xCrx alloy, the face-centered-cubic structure is more stable than the body-centered-cubic (bcc) one when 0 ≤ x ≤ 25, while the bcc structure becomes energetically favored when 25 < x ≤ 100. Interestingly, the predictions match well with the experimental observations.

Engineering ceramics and cermets are widely used for demanding tribological applications. In this perspective, the objective of this paper was to understand the friction and wear behavior of some of the potential tribomaterials, e.g., ZrO2–30 vol% TiB2 composite, sialon–40 vol% TiB2 composite, TiB2-based cermet with 16 vol% Ni3(Al,Ti) binder, and monolithic TiB2 in fretting contacts. Wear tests on the TiB2-containing materials under dry unlubricated conditions (23–25 °C, 50–55% relative humidity) were performed against corundum on a ball-on-flat tribometer. The obtained friction and wear data were critically analyzed to investigate how the binder phase in TiB2 matrix influences the tribological performance. Furthermore, morphological investigations of the transfer layers on the worn surfaces were performed and the wear mechanisms discussed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the worn surfaces in the monolithic TiB2/alumina revealed the pronounced transfer of mixed oxides containing TiO2 and B2O3 to the alumina counterbody and also indicated the transfer of alumina to TiB2 flat. Tribochemical reactions and abrasion along with the material transfer between the counterbodies were observed to play a major role in the wear of the fretting couples.

Lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) thin films were grown on Pt/Ti/Si(001) by metal organic decomposition (MOD). The effects of the annealing procedure on the crystalline microstructure, hysteresis loops, and fracture toughness of PZT thin films were investigated by x-ray diffraction, RT66A analyzer, and Vickers indentation method, respectively. It was found that the fracture toughness, crystalline microstructure, and ferroelectric properties depend on the annealing procedure. When the annealing temperature is in the range of 600–750 °C, the higher the annealing temperature, the better the crystalline quality. The fracture pattern diagram, as a function of indentation load and annealing temperature, was introduced to describe the fracture characteristics of PZT thin film induced by indentation load. With the increase of annealing temperature from 600 °C to 750 °C, the fracture toughness of PZT thin films decreased from 0.492 MPa m1/2 to 0.478 MPa m1/2.

The potential use of barium zirconate for the manufacture of corrosion-resistant substrates emphasizes the need for a simple, inexpensive, and easily scalable process to produce high-quality powders with well-controlled composition and properties. However, the classical solid-state preparation of barium zirconate leads to an inhomogeneous powder unsuitable for applications in highly corrosive environment. For this paper, the possibility to use the spray-drying technique for the preparation of BaZrO3 powders with a controlled size distribution and morphology was investigated. The influence of the nature and concentration of the precursor solution and the influence of the spray-drying step are discussed on the basis of x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and dilatometric measurements.

Boron nitride (BN) nanocrystals with explosion (E) phase were prepared by a novel laser-assisted materials fabrication, i.e., pulsed-laser-induced liquid (acetone)/solid (hexagonal boron nitride bulk) interfacial reaction at normal temperature and pressure. Typical diameters of these synthesized quasi-spherical BN nanocrystals were in the range of 30 to 80 nm. Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy were used to identify the morphologies and structures of the synthesized nanocrystals. Additionally, we proposed the formation mechanism of cubic-BN and E-BN nanocrystals upon pulsed-laser-induced liquid/solid interfacial reaction, in which both liquid and solid were simultaneously involved.

Time-dependent suspension behavior is reported for nonoxide ceramic powders (Si3N4, SiC, and MoSi2) in ethanol. The suspension pH (and therefore the stability) changed with time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inert gas fusion, inductively coupled plasma, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to track changes of surface chemistry. The adsorption of the base, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH), is examined. The pH drop on powder addition to pure EtOH was used to gain insight into the role of TMAH coverage of the powder surfaces.

La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSMO) and LaMnO3 (LMO) thin films epitaxially grown on (001) LaAlO3 substrate at 700 and 800°C were studied using cross-section and plan-view transmission electron microscopy. In both LSMO and LMO films deposited at 700°C, a two-layered structure was observed: a continuous cubic perovskite layer epitaxially grown on the substrate followed by epitaxially grown orthorhombic column nanostructures. The orthogonal nano columns in LSMO were very well defined with a narrow size distribution. The LMO films exhibited a somewhat distorted orthogonal shape for the nanostructured columns and a wider size distribution. LSMO and LMO epitaxial films deposited at 800°C consisted of only a continuous single layer of cubic perovskite. These results reveal that formation of epitaxial column nanostructures in the La1-xSrxMnO3 thin films strongly depends on the growth temperature. Sr substitution on La sites in La1-xSrxMnO3 can improve uniformity of column size distribution and perfection of the orthogonal shape of nano columns.

A novel experimental configuration was devised to measure the evolution of the deformation field and the corresponding toughness in solder joints for microelectronic packaging. The utilized material system comprised a ductile layer of tin-based solder encapsulated within relatively hard copper shoulders. The experimental configuration provided pure shear state within the constrained solder layer. Different Pb/Sn compositions were tested with grain size approaching the film thickness. The in-plane strain distribution within the joint thickness was measured by a microscopic digital image correlation system. The toughness evolution within such highly gradient deformation field was monitored qualitatively through a two-dimensional surface scan with a nanoindentor. The measurements showed a highly inhomogeneous deformation field within the film with discreet shear bands of concentrated strain. The localized shear bands showed long-range correlations of the order 2–3 grain diameters. A size-dependent macroscopic response on the layer thickness was observed. However, the corresponding film thickness was approximately 100–1000 times larger than those predicted by nonlocal continuum theories and discreet dislocation.

While processing techniques for deposition of CuOx/Al multilayer foils were being developed, a method for synthesizing paramelaconite (Cu4O3) was serendipitously discovered. These paramelaconite films were successfully synthesized by sputter-deposition from a CuO target. Milligram quantities of uncontaminated material were produced enabling new studies of the morphology, stoichiometry, and thermodynamics of this unique copper oxide. At moderate temperatures, equiaxed paramelaconite grains deposited with a strong out-of-plane texture; at lower temperatures the paramelaconite grains showed no texture but were columnar in geometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the as-deposited Cu4O3 had a nonstoichiometric Cu:O ratio of 1.7:1; the ratio of Cu+ to Cu2+ was 1.8:1. On heating, this phase decomposed into CuO and Cu2O at temperatures ranging from 400 to 530 °C. Using differential scanning calorimetry, the heat of formation and Gibbs free energy for Cu4O3 were estimated to be −453 and −279 kJ/mol, respectively. On the basis of these calculations and our observations, we confirmed that Cu4O3 is a metastable phase.

The effect of combined alloying additions on the structure and scale of rapidly solidified Sm–Fe alloys was investigated. Transition metal additions tend to promote the formation of the disordered TbCu7-type structure in Sm2Fe17 alloys, as determined by monitoring the long-range order parameter. Essentially no order was observed for M = Ti, Zr, V, or Nb. Thus, the structure was close to the prototypical TbCu7-type structure. With M = Si, a large amount of order was observed (S = 0.62), resulting in a structure closer to the well-ordered Th2Zn17-type. The microstructural scale was also affected by alloying. In this case, refinement depended on the substituent and also on carbon for microstructural refinement. The scale of the as-solidified grain structures ranged from 100 nm for SiC-modified alloys to 13 nm for NbC-modified alloys. The degree of refinement was directly related to the atomic size of the M addition. The refinement was the result of solute partitioning to grain boundaries, resulting in a solute drag effect that lowered the growth rates.
