Prescriptive pronunciation manuals of French generally present a vocalic inventory with two low vowels: front [a] and back [ɑ]. At the same time, descriptive overviews of modern French note the tendency of the posterior vowel to merge with the anterior token, especially in unstressed position. The actual spread and conditioning factors of this alleged merger are nevertheless unknown: we are ignorant about the degree of neutralization, and it is not clear whether it is a change affecting all regions and generations in France.

This article studies the French low vowels from a sociolinguistic perspective, by analyzing metropolitan French corpus data.

In February 2016 the French spelling reform of 1990, which introduced changes to approximately 2,000 words, became the object of discussion online, after it was announced that the new spellings would be included in textbooks from September. Analysing a corpus of tweets, containing key terms from the online discussion, JeSuisCirconflexe; ognon and réforme orthographe, this study gives an insight into the reactions to this governmental linguistic intervention, the recurring themes in their discourse and how this can be interpreted as prescriptive or purist behaviour. Although previous studies have extensively analysed reactions to the 1996 spelling reform in Germany, little research has considered online lay-reactions to the French reform. Given observations that online interactions differ in many ways to equivalent offline interactions, this study can form a point of contrast to previous studies conducted in offline contexts, thereby enriching the existing literature in this field. It is also often claimed that France is a country in which linguistic purism is deeply entrenched; this article will seek further evidence for these claims.

This article suggests a refinement of the link between dislocated constructions and the oral code. The research is based on an investigation of a mixed-medium corpus of contemporary French, including spoken language, journalistic prose and literary fiction. It is shown first that the form and function of dislocations vary according to the level of orality of the voice in which they are found: in particular, the intermediary nature of citations in newspaper articles is emphasised. It is then argued that the strict association of dislocation with the stylistic function of orality should be modified, since conveying orality does not always seem to be the primary motivation for dislocation.

L'objectif de cet article est d’établir que dans l'un de ses emplois, traditionnellement qualifié de ‘régional’, le passé surcomposé est une forme verbale qui grammaticalise la valeur habituellement appelée ‘parfait existentiel’. Dans une première partie, on dresse un panorama des principales propriétés du parfait existentiel, tel que l'exprime en français le passé composé, en distinguant propriétés sémantiques et propriétés discursives. On montre en particulier que cette valeur implique un prédicat existentiel lié à un intervalle de validation. Dans une seconde partie, on développe un certain nombre d'arguments établissant que le passé surcomposé grammaticalise cette valeur. On présente un tableau général des principaux emplois du surcomposé, et on analyse plusieurs exemples pour mettre au jour les points communs et les différences entre le passé composé et le passé surcomposé existentiels, notamment dans leur rapport avec les adverbiaux temporels quantifieurs de fréquence. On montre que le passé surcomposé existentiel est fréquemment utilisé pour établir un contraste entre le passé et le présent.

May I at the outset crave the reader's indulgence for focusing the subject matter very largely on metropolitan France. The regional varieties of French referred to in the title are therefore those spoken in the French regions, rather than, for example Belgian or Canadian varieties. Moreover, while it is impossible to discuss the regional languages question without taking into account the languages of the DOM-TOM and, indeed, the so-called non-territorial varieties, both of which have taken on considerable political significance in recent times, I have largely limited myself to reviewing sociolinguistic studies of ‘metropolitan’ regional (i.e. territorial) languages. I have also decided to concentrate on the present and thus may be perceived as giving short shrift to the large and growing body of excellent socio-historical work in the field.

Four major approaches are reviewed: firstly, the work inspired by the dialectological tradition on French regionalisms (section 2); secondly, quantitative variationist studies (section 3); thirdly, the Imaginaire Linguistique approach to linguistic perceptions (section 4) and fourthly, the approach emerging from the notion of diglossia, as defined by Catalan and Occitan linguists (section 5). Sections 6 to 8 deal with current issues – the Poignant (1998), Carcassonne (1998) and Cerquiglini (1999) reports and the vitality of regional languages as presented in numerous surveys of largely professed practices and exposure in the audio-visual media.

Les normes qui régissent l'emploi des termes d'adresse, et plus spécialement celui des ‘formes nominales d'adresse’, varient d'une langue et d'une culture à l'autre, ce qui peut engendrer certains problèmes dans les échanges interculturels. Cet article présente les grandes lignes d'une recherche collective portant sur la description de ces FNA envisagées dans une perspective contrastive. Après avoir examiné le cas des interactions dans les petits commerces en France et dans différents pays arabophones, on présentera quelques résultats plus généraux qui ressortent de cette recherche en cours.

We present a descriptive generalisation according to which a verbal or an event argument is merged as an indirect object (IO) when the direct object (DO) position is occupied. Our goal is to formalise this generalisation and to show how current syntactic theory provides the necessary tools to support it. Specifically, the converging consensus that all so-called intransitive verbs have an internal nominal argument resolves previous exceptions to the generalisation and shows that the transitivity restriction on thematic IOs is structural.

La parole publique constitue un observatoire privilégié pour de la phonologie du français. Son témoignage sur les changements phonologiques en cours est étudié sur le terrain de la liaison. Un corpus de discours et d'interviews de femmes et d'hommes politiques couvrant la période 1999–2015 démontre l'hétérogénéité profonde du phénomène: liaison obligatoire et liaison variable constituent deux phénomènes nettement distincts. Le premier est relativement stable tandis que le second profondément variable est marqué par un changement en cours. Le changement affecte un petit nombre de mots très fréquents, ce qui induit une variabilité très importante.

La présente étude examine la question du degré d'autonomisation de la variété de français en usage dans la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles par rapport au français standard. Nous proposons d'abord une revue critique des réponses apportées par certains auteurs à cette question, qui souligne des carences méthodologiques récurrentes dans de nombreux travaux. Les éléments de réponse basés sur l'étude des représentations des locuteurs sont également pris en considération. Nous montrons ensuite comment les enquêtes menées actuellement par le centre de recherche VALIBEL tentent de dépasser les limites des recherches antérieures et nous conduisent à réévaluer l'importance de la variation diatopique du français en Belgique.

Old French sentential negation (NEG) represents an important morphosyntactic change that has been investigated by a large number of scholars from different theoretical approaches. From the 12th to the 14th (and mainly in the 13th) century, there are two variants of this variable in competition: NEG with only ne (the older variant) and NEG with ne + pas/mie/point, etc. The research presented in this paper has been motivated by the wish to find relevant factors for this variation in Old French. In order to identify factors of influence on the variable NEG with or without pas, mie and point, we analyse two subcorpora containing two different text types. The choice of the tested factors is rooted both in variational linguistics and in previous studies on Old French negation, implying (extralinguistic) diasystematic factors like diatopic and diastratic ones as well as intralinguistic factors like transitivity of the verb, word order and clause type. Main findings are the probable relevance of clause type and the influence of socially definable (diastratic) groups. Beyond this, the results across the two different text type are predominantly similar, but we found differences as well. This leads us to plead in favour of the importance of considering the factor text type while working on diachronic corpora.

Dans cette contribution, nous proposons une analyse des noms attributs inanimés dépourvus de déterminant. Partant d'une typologie globale des emplois attestés dans Frantext, nous nous concentrerons surtout sur les emplois nominaux ‘productifs’, c'est-à-dire les emplois nominaux qui ne sont ni figés (X est fonction de), ni liés à une série d'items lexicaux particuliers (X est affaire/question…de). Il s'avère que les emplois nominaux se situent entre deux pôles sémantiques, qui correspondent à deux profils syntaxiques: un pôle [+ catégorisation] (Bruxelles est capitale de l'Europe) et un pôle [+ association conceptuelle] (Dieu est amour; un visage qui fut révélation). Le premier pôle se trouve dans le prolongement de la construction prédicative des noms humains (Pierre est médecin) et constitue l'interprétation par défaut. Les emplois se rattachant au second pôle se fondent sur un calcul inférentiel.

Dans cet article, nous présentons les recherches, relativement récentes, sur l'intégration du genre dans la représentation mentale d'une lectrice ou d'un lecteur, en mettant l'accent sur leurs controverses ainsi que sur les pistes encore peu (ou pas) explorées. Nous espérons ainsi susciter l'intérêt de la communauté francophone sur ce sujet, jusqu'ici relativement discrète. Au travers de cette présentation, nous souhaitons également souligner les retombées sociétales des recherches sur ce sujet, principalement au travers de l'identification de processus langagiers discriminants.

Si la recherche a jusqu'ici principalement ciblé des adultes dits monolingues entre 19 et 25 ans, nous présenterons également les quelques études qui ont été menées sur les enfants entre 6 et 15 ans, un projet en cours sur des enfants entre 2 et 3 ans et quelques résultats d'une étude récente examinant l'influence du bilinguisme sur la représentation du genre.

Dans cet article, j'examine l'influence de la langue maternelle sur la variabilité morphologique en production orale spontanée chez 15 apprenants hispanophones du français. L'incidence des formes infinitives en contextes tensés est élevé chez les débutants et décline par la suite. En revanche, l'incidence des formes tensées en contextes non-tensés est très faible, ce qui diffère des apprenants anglophones du français (Prévost, 2003). Cette différence proviendrait du fait que l'espagnol possède des marqueurs infinitifs audibles, contrairement à l'anglais. La surgénéralisation des formes infinitives serait due à la lourdeur des coûts computationnels associés à la sélection des formes tensées, et non à une déficience grammaticale (Meisel, 1997).

The extent to which gender neutral and gendered nouns impact differently upon native French speakers’ gender representations was examined through a yes-no forced choice task. Swiss (Experiment 1) and Québec (Experiment 2) French-speaking participants were presented with word pairs composed of a gendered first name (e.g., Thomas) and a role (e.g., doctor), and tasked to indicate whether they believed that [first name] could be one of the [role]. Roles varied according to gender stereotypicality (feminine, masculine, non-stereotyped), and were either in a plural masculine (interpretable as generic) or gender neutral (epicenes and group nouns) form. The results indicated that the use of gender neutral forms of roles avoided a strong male bias found for the masculine forms, and that both gender neutral and masculine forms used equal cognitive resources. Further, stereotype effects associated with both gender-neutral and grammatically masculine forms were quite small (<1%). These results were highly reliable across both Swiss French and Québec speakers. Our study suggests that gender neutral forms are strong alternatives to the use of the masculine form as default value.

Figures on the relative frequency of synthetic and composite future forms in Ouest-France are presented and compared with those of earlier studies on the passé simple and passé composé. The synthetic future is found to be dominant. Possible formal explanations for distribution are found to be inconclusive. Distribution across different text-types is found to be more promising, since contrastive functions of the two forms can be identified in texts where they co-occur. The composite future typically reports new proposals or plans as current news, while the synthetic future outlines details that will be realised at the time of implementation. Both functions are important in dailies, but current news is more often expressed in the present tense at the expense of the composite future.

This article is a quantitative study of the variable deletion of post-obstruent /l/ and /R/ in word-final obstruent-liquid clusters (OLC) in French (capable [kapab(l)], cidre [sid(ʁ)]). The analysis of over a thousand tokens extracted from a corpus of interviews gathered in Nancy and Rennes shows that the reduction of word-final OLCs is a stable sociolinguistic marker in northern, standardised metropolitan French. Patterns of stylistic and social stratification in age, gender, and social class and interaction with following phonological context are attested, but OLC reduction does not appear to be an ongoing change. It is argued that the data provide further evidence of variable morpheme-final consonant clusters as a ‘primitive’ feature of vernacular dialects.

Dans cet article, nous proposons une méthode qui permet de mesurer le degré d'autonomie que manifestent les compléments prépositionnels vis-à-vis du verbe dans un corpus, de manière à tester l'hypothèse couramment admise d'un continuum entre arguments et circonstants et d'en étudier les manifestations. L'exploitation de corpus annotés catégoriellement et syntaxiquement et la mise au point de méthodes de quantification nous permettent de sonder ce continuum en divers points. La méthode met alors au jour des positions médianes, dont nous montrons qu'elles peuvent donner à voir des configurations récurrentes propres au corpus, au comportement intermédiaire entre arguments et circonstants prototypiques.

Clitics and affixes are known to originate from erstwhile independent words. In French, a question marker has developed in a most peculiar way through the combination of a verb-final consonant and the third person masculine singular pronoun, and has gradually spread to other persons through a singular series of phonological, syntactic and analogical processes. Although this it is now all but moribund in Continental Frenceh, its offshoot tu is alive and well in Canadian French, the construction subject + verb + tu having become the most usual way of formulating yes-no questions in this dialect. Despite the long history of ti\tu, however, its exact grammatical status has yet to be established. Various criteria that have been proposed in recent years to distinguish clitics from affixes would seem to indicate that this morpheme should be properly classified as a suffis.

Le but de notre article est d'entreprendre une réflexion générale sur une des relations de discours parmi les plus importantes, la relation dite d’Élaboration. Il s'agit d'un terme technique pour désigner une relation sémantique ou conceptuelle entre des phrases ou propositions. Toutefois, le sens mondain (non technique) qu'elle a a des répercussions sur l'emploi technique. On constate alors que c'est bien souvent ce sens mondain ou courant, à savoir qu'élaborer c'est préparer, réaliser quelque chose, qui intervient dans la reconnaissance ou dans l'analyse des exemples. Notre propos se limitera ainsi à examiner les définitions du type intuitif qu'on a pu donner de la relation d’Élaboration. Chemin faisant, nous aborderons également la définition donnée dans le cadre de la RST de W. C. Mann et S. Thompson pour en arriver à des caractérisations plus formelles. Nous ouvrirons, enfin, des pistes qui donneront lieu ultérieurement à une analyse plus poussée qui nous aidera à comparer la relation d'Élaboration avec d'autres relations discursives.

On examine les étapes par lesquelles en français le sujet non exprimé (S0) et le sujet postposé au verbe (VS) ont régressé, sans disparaître, jusqu’à l’état moderne, entre le 9e s. et le premier tiers du 17e s. Dès le milieu du 16e s., les taux d'expression et d'antéposition du sujet au verbe sont comparables à ceux du français moderne, la syntaxe du sujet conservant par ailleurs des constructions archaïques. Sur un corpus de dix-sept extraits de textes diversifiés (11e–20e s.), on analyse dans quel ordre et selon quelle chronologie les facteurs corrélés à S0 ou VS depuis l'ancien français ont disparu, à quel moment les traits régressifs S0 et VS sont devenus des traits distinctifs caractérisant des constructions spécifiques, à quel moment et dans quelles constructions se situent les derniers développements de ce changement, et à partir de quelle période se trouvent des textes offrant – et n'offrant que – la syntaxe du sujet moderne.
