Occitan and Catalan are in an increasing state of language obsolescence in France. Their phonologies both contain a voiced palatal lateral approximant /ʎ/, not present in modern French, that is being replaced in all positions by the palatal approximant [j]. It is not clear whether this is an effect of language contact with French because [j] commonly emerges as a variant of /ʎ/ in non-contact varieties of Romance. This article examines the distribution of /ʎ/ in Occitan and Catalan, using auditory and acoustic data from a wordlist-translation task conducted with 40 native speakers. The analysis aims to determine the nature of this sound change either as the result of transfer from French or as a regular sound change that is motivated by the phonetic similarity of [ʎ] and [j]. The mechanisms governing transfer from French are modelled statistically to account for the distribution of historically appropriate and contact-induced variants of /ʎ/, and acoustic analyses test the hypothesis that the change is internally motivated and occurring gradually. Results show that the factors conditioning the change may be different in each of these related languages in that it is contact-induced in Occitan, but potentially due to internal and external factors in Catalan.

The radical structural distinction often proposed between pseudo-partitive (i.e. beaucoup de problèmes) and partitive (i.e. beaucoup des problèmes épineux) is argued to be the by-product of too restrictive a view of the internal structure of the noun phrase in French. A more articulated nominal phrase structure is adopted here, one which makes. use of the idea of the determiner being itself the head of a functional projection (the so-called DP-panalysis). This DP approach to partitive and pseudo-partitive configurations, it is proposed, also allows for a reappraisal of what are traditionally termed the partitive and plural indefinite article (i.e. du, de la, de l' and des).

This is a personal delineation of part of a methodology for the History of the French Language, aiming to combine the methodology of linguistics with that of history proper. Both traditional and modern methods of ‘historical linguistics’ fail to take account of a real time dimension, whereas ‘language history’ often resembles institutional, cultural and social history. We ask how we identify the ‘event’ and the ‘object’ of linguistic history, and how we distinguish variation, innovation, shift and change. We ask also what the linguist can contribute to the historian's reconstruction of the past.

Old and Middle French interrogative sentences of the type sez tu pas? have often been interpreted, erroneously, as providing evidence for the early dropping of ne as in modern je sais pas. The construction occurs most widely in Old and early Middle French with point (occasionally pas, mie) and the particle had a positive or ‘potential’ value (e.g. Quenois le tu point? ‘Do you know him [at all]?’). It was only in late Middle French that, influenced by the increasing use of pas and point in negative clauses, the interrogative clauses in question came to have a negative value.

This article investigates the grammatical realization of the notion of focus in Colloquial French and Standard French. Based on two production experiments, the article reveals three findings: (i) focus marking is not as categorical as previously acknowledged, (ii) focus marking asymmetry for subjects vs. non-subjects is only supported in CoF and (iii) there is no strict relationship between focus realization and interpretation in either variety. I develop a stochastic optimality-theory analysis, which explains the canonical-cleft sentence alternation in terms of prosody and expands on past literature by accounting for the variation observed both within and across language variety.

In February 2016 the French spelling reform of 1990, which introduced changes to approximately 2,000 words, became the object of discussion online, after it was announced that the new spellings would be included in textbooks from September. Analysing a corpus of tweets, containing key terms from the online discussion, JeSuisCirconflexe; ognon and réforme orthographe, this study gives an insight into the reactions to this governmental linguistic intervention, the recurring themes in their discourse and how this can be interpreted as prescriptive or purist behaviour. Although previous studies have extensively analysed reactions to the 1996 spelling reform in Germany, little research has considered online lay-reactions to the French reform. Given observations that online interactions differ in many ways to equivalent offline interactions, this study can form a point of contrast to previous studies conducted in offline contexts, thereby enriching the existing literature in this field. It is also often claimed that France is a country in which linguistic purism is deeply entrenched; this article will seek further evidence for these claims.

Dans les études ayant conclu à une dépréciation de la variété endogène, les attitudes linguistiques ont été suscitées à partir de stimuli généraux (p.ex., accent). Dans cet article, nous soulignons les limites de ces travaux, en montrant au travers d'une récente enquête que la réponse à un stimulus général est formulée sur la base d'une partie seulement des variantes lexicales, celles relevant d'un contact de langues et présentant un déficit de prestige. Les résultats de cette recherche mettent parallèlement au jour la légitimité de tout un pan de variantes endogènes (archaïsmes et innovations romandes). Tout en expliquant pourquoi certaines ressources linguistiques sont plus susceptibles que d'autres de servir de fondement à la variété endogène légitime, nous discutons les facteurs contribuant à l'autonomisation du français en Suisse romande.

Le marqueur par exemple présente en français québécois des usages qui le distinguent de ceux qu'il possède actuellement en français de référence. L'article a deux objectifs.

1) Il vise d'abord à faire ressortir un certain nombre de caractéristiques sémantiques propres aux différentes acceptions de par exemple et à dégager les liens qui les unissent.

2) Il vise ensuite à mettre en relief quelques aspects relatifs à l'organisation sémantique de marqueurs à valeur pragmatique issus d'un processus de pragmaticalisation. Ainsi, les différents sens de par exemple présentent une organisation sémantique graduelle. De manière générale, ce type d'organisation s'expliquerait par la présence dans les sens lexicaux / grammaticaux de composantes qui généreraient des sens pragmatiques. Ceux-ci généreraient d'autres sens pragmatiques, de sorte qu'il en résulterait souvent une chaîne (sur cette notion, v. Heine, 1992) où un sens pragmatique initial serait lié à un sens lexical/ grammatical, mais où le sens pragmatique final n'aurait pas nécessairement de lien direct avec un sens lexical / grammatical.

L'étude fait suite à une série de travaux sur les marqueurs discursifs (sur tiens, v. Dostie et Léard, 1997; sur écoute/ regarde, v. Dostie, 1998; sur t'sais, v. Dostie et de Sève, 1999; sur dis donc et dis-moi pas, v. Dostie, 2001)

L'éveil au langage est en plein essor depuis déjà un moment. Nous n'avons qu'à penser aux congrès qui y sont dédiés, aux recherches qui en traitent et même à une revue scientifique à qui son nom a été donné (Language Awareness). Malgré ces différentes manifestations faisant foi de l'importance que revêt l'Éveil au langage dans le domaine de l'enseignement et de l'acquisition des langues, ce qu'il est exactement ne semble pas toujours être bien clair. S'agit-il uniquement d'une approche didactique? Correspond-il également à un mouvement ou encore à un ensemble spécifique de techniques d'enseignement? L'objectif général de cet article est de tenter de déterminer ce qu'est l'Éveil au langage (notre traduction de Language Awareness) en établissant, d'abord, ce qu'il comprend et, ensuite, en proposant une organisation des concepts qui en traitent.

Cette étude examine avec quel degré de granularité divers accents ouest-africains en français peuvent être distingués. Elle vise avant tout à déterminer si, en perception, des auditeurs de l'Afrique de l'Ouest sont capables d'identifier l'appartenance ethnolinguistique, le pays de résidence et le niveau d'études de locuteurs akan, bambara, sénoufo, mossi (de langue mooré) et wolof, enregistrés en Côte d'Ivoire, au Mali, au Burkina Faso et au Sénégal. Une expérience perceptive a été menée, d'où il ressort que les dimensions étudiées sont bien identifiées par les sujets. Pour les jeunes locuteurs comme pour les locuteurs plus âgés, en lecture comme en parole spontanée, les résultats sont très robustes. Ils sont de plus assez fidèles à la conscience linguistique auto-évaluée par les auditeurs: quand ceux-ci se déclaraient confiants pour reconnaître les accents en présence, tel a effectivement été le cas. Quelques indices acoustiques différenciant notamment les accents wolof (Sénégal) et akan (Côte d'Ivoire) ont finalement été dégagés.

In the light of the extensive dialect leveling found in Francophone Louisiana, the suggestion made in Byers (1988) is a particularly interesting one, that the geographical distribution of qui and quoi, both meaning ‘what’, reflects the differential settlement histories of early 18th century Creoles, and Acadians, respectively. In this article I document these two interrogative patterns as to form and locales of attestation, and I explore the evidence for Byer's claim, showing that a strong case can be made by considering not only settlement history but also the interrogatives of Louisiana Creole, the origins of which arguably predate the arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana.

Children's awareness of grammar can be traced in the way they use and particularly misuse morphology and constructions in what Clark (2001) calls ‘emergent categories’. We focus our longitudinal study on a French speaking child's use of possession markers (Anaé, Paris Corpus), and her creative nonstandard productions (la poupée de moi for ma poupée/my doll). We provide a detailed analysis of the ways in which she moves between a global strategy thanks to which she locates, identifies and uses whole blocks or constructions without analyzing them, and a more analytic strategy that parallels her progressive mastery of the semantic and syntactic complexity of grammatical morphemes.

Cet article étudie les différences distributionnelles entre les emplois référentiels du SNdém en français et en néerlandais. En soumettant les données issues de deux corpus comparables (Dutch Parallel Corpus et Corpus de Namur) à notre modèle triangulaire systématique des emplois du SNdém, nous constatons que deux explications majeures permettent de comprendre la plus grande partie des divergences attestées au niveau des emplois référentiels du SNdém en français et en néerlandais, à savoir des normes stylistiques différentes en relation avec des différences linguistiques et des divergences au niveau du degré de déicticité des SNdém en français et en néerlandais.

Dans cet article, j'examine l'influence de la langue maternelle sur la variabilité morphologique en production orale spontanée chez 15 apprenants hispanophones du français. L'incidence des formes infinitives en contextes tensés est élevé chez les débutants et décline par la suite. En revanche, l'incidence des formes tensées en contextes non-tensés est très faible, ce qui diffère des apprenants anglophones du français (Prévost, 2003). Cette différence proviendrait du fait que l'espagnol possède des marqueurs infinitifs audibles, contrairement à l'anglais. La surgénéralisation des formes infinitives serait due à la lourdeur des coûts computationnels associés à la sélection des formes tensées, et non à une déficience grammaticale (Meisel, 1997).

L'article porte sur la formulation des demandes des usagers dans une permanence d'accès au droit dans un centre social en France. Il se concentre sur les usagers habituels, dont certains sont peu francophones, et met en évidence des procédés spécifiques par rapport aux descriptions existantes de la formulation des requêtes en français. L'article se situe dans une approche de linguistique interactionnelle multimodale, à partir de laquelle est décrite la construction progressive et collaborative des demandes et la variété des ressources, y compris gestuelles, utilisées par les usagers pour les formuler. L'objectif est, d'une part, d'examiner l'influence de la formulation de la requête sur le traitement qui en est fait par la médiatrice. C'est, d'autre part, de mettre en évidence les ressources privilégiées par les demandeurs.

La présente étude est une analyse sociolinguistique de la notion de restriction exprimée par l'alternance rien que/juste/seulement/seulement que/ne. . . que dans le français parlé à Welland (Ontario), Saint-Boniface et Saint-Laurent (Manitoba) et Bonnyville (Alberta). Trois de ces communautés résultent de l'immigration francophone hors Québec, l'autre de l'appropriation du français par les Métis au 18e siècle. L'examen de l'influence des contraintes internes et externes qui pèsent sur l'emploi des variantes mentionnées ci-dessus met au jour les nombreux points communs qui unissent ces quatre variétés de français mais aussi quelques points de divergence. Ce faisant, notre étude dégage plusieurs pistes de recherche pour une étude panlectale de la convergence et de la divergence sociolinguistique au sein de la famille des variétés de français laurentiens.

On se propose d'étudier le fonctionnement sémantico-pragmatique de la locution adverbiale à première vue quand elle introduit un point de vue au sens de Nølke (1994) et qu'elle joue un rôle de « cadratif » prospectif (Charolles 1997). Dans cette perspective, nous nous intéressons aux enchaînements discursifs plus ou moins stéréotypés dans lesquels s'inscrit la locution. En particulier, nous établissons une relation entre à première vue et des expressions qui signalent une évolution dans le temps du jugement du locuteur (à y regarder de plus près, en y réfléchissant, tout bien réfléchi, tout compte fait, tout bien considéré, . . .).

Picard faces challenges in its quest for recognition, in part due to its perceived similarity with French. While scholars recognize that Picard and French phonology, morphology and lexicon differ considerably, some scholars maintain that Picard syntax differs little from French. Suspecting that such assessments are based on superficial comparisons, we test their validity by performing comparative variationist analyses of Picard and French morphosyntactic structures. This article focuses on interrogatives. We compare older and contemporary written data, as well as contemporary oral data, and show that Picard and French use their shared structures differently and that the Picard Yes/No interrogative system is complex but constrained by two linguistic factors: polarity and person. We report very different distributions of SV, inversion and interrogative –ti based on polarity and show that negative markers point and mie constrain the choice of interrogative structure. For affirmative interrogatives, we show that the distribution of interrogative structures is strongly constrained by the subject person. A diachronic analysis of text from nine authors from three generations reveals overall stability over time, with some signs of convergence toward French in the middle generation but a reversal to the older patterns in the youngest generation.

This article reports the results of three studies dealing with dislocated sequences in French. A text count of written and spoken French reveals that word order is not entirely free in these sequences but instead obeys certain constraints. Two studies then investigate the use of cues (word order, clitic pronoun type, clitic pronoun agreement and animacy) in the interpretation of dislocated sequences by native speakers of French. Results indicate that the constraints found in the text count, with minor modifications, are also operative in processing.

Dont has been claimed to be an exception to the ‘subject island’ constraint (Tellier, 1991; Sportiche and Bellier, 1989; Heck, 2009) and to contrast with true relative pronouns such as de qui. We provide corpus data from a literary corpus (Frantext), which show that relativizing out of the subject is possible with dont and de qui in French relative clauses, and is even the most frequent use of both relative clauses. We show that it is not a recent innovation by comparing subcorpora from the beginning of the twentieth century and from the beginning of the twenty-first century. We also show, with an acceptability judgement task, that extraction out of the subject with de qui is well accepted. Why has this possibility been overlooked? We suggest that it may be because de qui relatives in general are less frequent than dont relatives (about 60 times less in our corpus). Turning to de qui interrogatives, we show that extraction out of the subject is not attested, and propose an explanation of the contrast with relative clauses. We conclude that in this respect, French does not seem to differ from other Romance languages.
